On the weekend of October 10th-11th RIW Hobbies in Livonia Michigan will be hosting an Eternal Weekend. On Saturday the 10th there will be a sanctioned no proxy Legacy tournament with first prize being an Unlimited Mox Sapphire and at least $50 store credit to second place. And, Sunday October 11 there will be an Sanctioned Vintage event (also no proxies) with first prize being an Unlimited Mox Ruby & 2x Revised Underground Sea. Entry fee for both events will be $20. Since we are trying something new and not allowing proxies for the Vintage tournament, we are going to offer a prize to the best performing unspoiled deck. (unspoiled means: decks that do not include the Power 9, Bazaar of Baghdad, Mishra's Workshop, or Mana Drain). The top finishing unspoiled deck will be awarded a From the Vault: Exiled, MTG Box Set! Additional prize support will be added depending on attendece and will be given out as store credit to the rest of top 8. Store opens at 11:00 AM and the Tournaments begin at noon. Deck Registration is required so make sure to arrive prior to the event start time if you do not already have a decklist! Join us in Michigan for what should be an extremely fun weekend of Eternal Magic. Stay the weekend and play all the events, or show up for your favorite or specialty format! Me too. actually playing for real with the cards is the best. Who else is going to come out for this thing. I specifically put the post up over a month in advance so that people could plan for this thing. I think that it is going to be a complete blast. I'm hoping to see some of the old school Canadians out for this thing.

Kung-POW! I got Snoop Trogg and Yangtime locked in for this and I know I can bring at least 3 others.
Man, this is going to be awesome.
Over a month in advance should provide enough time for proper hyping.
Hype, Hype, Hype, Hype!!!!!!
I'll get a list of awesomeness going so peeps will want to show up in droves.
-Pat "The Innovator" Chapin might be there talking on his phone to vintage greats or waving his hands around like a mother who's child is playing on a freeway. -Vintage's own, Avant Guard, Brian Demars will be there expressing his love for Goblin Welder and reminiscing about Burning Slaver. -Yangtime will be gunslinging between rounds. I wouldn't bring a knife to this fight. -Snoop Trogg will be there expressing his disgust towards Blue and talking about how Red gets constantly boned from R&D. -Will Paul "Sculptini" Mastriano blast Twaun007 out of another top 8? -As Canadians cross the boarder will us Americans be able to laugh when the phase "Could you please lift your scrotum." comes into play?(perhaps only Americans get to hear this one.) -Will Stephen Q. Menedian be autographing holo-foil Brainstorms? -Can Twaun007 pull the legendary Jdizzle out from the inner sanctum of collegiate life to make an appearance?
The only way to find out how this story unfolds is to show up.

Just got off the phone with former Vintage World Champ Mark "Windfall" Biller, he is coming out of retirement to play in his event.
Paul "Fishalo" Nicalo told me he is planning on attending.
If somebody fishes Josh Franklin out from the bottom of the Detroit River it could be a Vintage Avant-Garde reunion!
Seriously, this thing is going to be insane.

Awesome! There should be a fair amount of Meandeckers at this event. Hopefully some of the other teams will be represented. I am super psyched to play Legacy, I haven't played that format in months now
Does anybody know what happened to Ben Perry?

KUNG-POW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Had to bump this since it is so busted.
I can only make Sunday due to scheduling conflicts at work so I am going to miss out on the hot Legacy action, but I'd rather sit on a bowling pin wrapped in lit sparklers than miss sanctioned vintage.
Awesomeness -Nam Q. Tran from the newly resurrected Team Reflection will be there. -Yangtime will be gunslinging and signing autographs. -The Venerable St. Brian Demars will be philosophizing and lecturing about how to safely juggle multiple dates with women at the same time. -The face of vintage, Stephen Q. Menendian, might be handing out vintage lessons. -Paul "Sculptini" Mastriano will be expressing his love for Heinz ketchup. -The Legendary Jdizzle will be coming out of retirement. -Vintage will be sanctioned so we don't have to look at basic Plains with marker scribbled on them all day.
The real question to the masses is why wouldn't you show up to this?

UPDATE: Support for this event has been very strong. As a result the prize for the Sunday Legacy Event has been upgraded to a Mox Sapphire, instead of a Mox Ruby.
Hope to see lots of you guys at the tournament!

Yes, Saturday is the Legacy event for a Mox Sapphire.
Pam changed the Vintage event from a Mox Jet to a Mox Ruby and 2x Revised Underground Sea. Hopefully nobody will object to that, as it actually turns out the Mox Ruby is in much nicer condition than the Jet RIW was going to give away. The two Underground Seas also sweeten the pot a little.
Really looking forward to this event.
I have no idea what the format is going to look like with Zendikar. I can't wait to see people get Mindbreak Trapped!
Cheers

I'm dissapointed: I doubt that Brian will post the top 8 decklists.
Mark Trogon, Jerry Yang, Paul Mastriano and some other guy made top 4.
There were 22 players. It was a fun tournament! I went 2-2 drop, and apparently could have made top 8 if I had played and won round 5 since I had the highest tiebreaks of the six pointers and the 8th place player was 3-2. Whoops!

The other guy was Jeremiah. This was actually a very fun tournament, hope there's more and more people will show up. As for the decklists... it was what, like 12 traps, 48 other cards?

This tournament was pretty impressive for a Sanctioned event. I really felt like Sanctioned events have a chance of working in this area. I was especially impressed with the players that came out with no power in their decks hoping to win the FTV Exiled prize in addition to whatever else they could win. That really seemed to help.
I'd like to thank Brian Demars for putting me up in his place, as well as Pam and the rest of the RIW crew for putting on a good tournament. it's too bad that not many people showed up for Legacy because i think that if more people knew about that there may have been even more people for day 2.
All in all, another excellent event from RIW.

Thanks to Pam for running this, I had a lot of fun and the tournament was well-run and enjoyable, as has been my consistent experience for RIW events. I was able to bring a crew up to Livonia with me this time: Evan and Kelsey, who are new to high level vintage tournaments, and partially in testament to the quality of the tourney we all are definitely planning on coming again. When we drive up I see Twaun standing the lot with his crew, who comes over to see us and I introduce him to my magic homies. I reveal to them that this is the man who went 7-0 in the swiss at the Xtreme games P9 tourney a few months earlier. There is much awe and reverence.
I played a BUG fish-esque deck that eschews traditional fish mana denial in favor of bustedness and wound up taking 2nd against Paul Mastriano in a cliff-hanging 3 game nailbiter. I wish I had been able to post this earlier as the details of my rounds would have been fresher, but I can blather on about my impressions:
Round 1 vs. Kelsey. 1st round opp is my friend from IN who came up with me. Bummer. He's with an unpowered goblin deck with Vintage hate. Unfortunately for him, he can't answer Sphinx of the Steel Wind and it wins the game for me 2nd game, possibly the first as well (altho that might have been Sower, I don't remember).
Round 2 vs. Jerry Yang. This is my 2nd career match against Yangtime; first was around a year ago in Philly where I was unceremoniously blown out the water by some oath/dredge monstronsity. This time he's playing storm with brainfreeze. He manages to storm me out in the 2nd game, but I win the 1st and 3rd. Key was Cutpurse keeping his hand down while I drew countermagic. Jerry was, as usual, the consummate sportsman and a cordial and enjoyable opponent.
Round 3 vs. Randal. He's playing Stax with Factories. Also, dude has one of the pimpest collection of extended art cards I've seen. I end up winning in 2. Key plays were Trygons eating artifacts and him drawing 3 Tangles but nothing to back them up.
Round 4 and 5: ID.
Quarterfinals vs. Gil with Mono-R Workshop aggro. I win game 1 off Sowers, E. Explosives killing Welders, and Sower IIRC. Game 2 he locks me out fast with Moon Magus. Game 3 I have Cutpurse + 3 mana in play and a Sower in hand. He just played a Welder with Solemn in play and a Trike in the graveyard. He passes the turn; I have no mana in hand and need to draw either another mana or an EE to kill the Welder. My draw step yields nothing. I look at the board position and realize my only hope is to swing with the Cutpurse and hope he doesn't block with solemn. I announce attack and he decides to let it through, drawing me a Polluted and allowing Sower to get the win for me. After the match he told me he realized his mistake.
Semis versus Mark Trogdon with Dark Tez. We talk some friendly trash before the game; I inform him that I have the advantage since my deck is 61 cards. Game 1 I get 1st turn Ancestral. Then Regrow it next turn(?) and get it again. Then he casts Tez with the Key in play(?) off scads of artifact mana and wins. We both agree that Ancestral is pretty over-rated. Games 2 and 3 I get Confidant + Cutpurse advantage and seal it.
Finals versus Paul Mastriano with something that looked similar to Steel City Vault. (It had U, welders, and Vault.) Game 1 I go off with Will sometime before the 4th turn I think and tinker up Steelwind. His turn he baits with the Welder (I had no FoW and it does nothing against Sphinx anyways), then plays the Vault combo. Game 2 He Tinkers land-eating robot, killing my 3 land, while I've been eating his life with 2 Bobs. He can't swing though because I'm still at high life (15ish) while his is around 6 or so. Soon he casts Time Walk and Swings with the Sundering. I chump with a Bob, then he swings again on his turn. I can't remember if I chump this too or let it through. However, I recover on mana quickly and wind up Sowering for the win. Game 3 was a long and grinding affair which featured me drawing lands and Bobs with LoA, and Paul hitting me with my own Glen Elendra. When I finally get a Trygon up for defense he darkblasts it and goes TO TOWN with a lone Sower. This was an intense round of magic and very enjoyable and hats off to Paul for the great competition (even though he called me "son" while I am, in fact, his elder).
I got to see some familiar faces and some new ones as well, and again, I thoroughly enjoyed this tournament.
-Jeremiah G.
