To begin I’d like to thank everyone who came out to Brothers Grim on Saturday, our judge Brian Paskoff, and the Brothers Grim staff.  I had a great time running the event and I was glad to see all of you there.

With 53 players we had the largest N.Y.S.E. event yet.  It was the largest Vintage tournament ever held on Long Island, and I have a great deal of hope for future N.Y.S.E. events.  The next N.Y.S.E. event will be held in early December, with all details set to follow sometime later this week.  In all likelihood N.Y.S.E. IV will be for an Unlimited Time Walk.  I will run N.Y.S.E. V sometime in January, and it will be my second Lotus tournament.

There will be pictures of the top 8 players, holding their prizes, put up sometime later this week I hope.  I’m waiting on the pictures to be emailed to me.

The Complete Metagame Breakdown:

Dragon w. Tezzeret Board: 2
Tezzeret: 10
Oath: 4
5CStax: 7
Painter: 2
Noble Fish: 3
Dredge: 4
TPS: 5
Bloodghast/Clamp: 2
Black Control: 2
SCV: 1
Hexmage/Depths: 1
White Weenie w. Green: 1
Next Level Vault: 1
Mono Red Shops: 1
Elves!: 1
R/G Beats: 1
StifleNaught: 1
Ophidian Control: 1
Counter/Burn: 1
U/G Fish: 1
Zuran/Crucible/Fastbond Combo: 1

There was a significant bounce in Workshops from N.Y.S.E II to N.Y.S.E. III, as Workshop based strategies were nearly as popular as the ubiquitous Tezzeret decks.  Rituals and Bazaars were also a noticeable factor in the metagame.  Mana Drains comprised roughly 27% of the field (with Tezzeret making up 18% of the overall field), Workshops 15%, Rituals 9%, Bazaars 7.5% and Null Rod strategies 13% with the remaining decks blurring lines between pillars or falling outside them entirely.

Top 8 Pairings and Results

Nick Coss (D3G) vs. Matt Elias (D3G) – Elias wins
Austin Pollack vs. Paul Mastriano (Meandeck) – Mastriano wins
Scott Conway vs. Ici Li – Conway wins

Top 4 Pairings and Results

Jeff Folinus (D3G) vs. Paul Mastriano (Meandeck) – Folinus wins
Matt Elias (D3G) vs. Scott Conway – Elias wins

Finals
Matt Elias (D3G) vs. Jeff Folinus (D3G) – Elias wins

To be fair, the finals were a split with Elias getting the Lotus and the credit for the win.  Congratulations to Matt Elias, Jeff Folinus and all of our top 8 competitors!

I’d like to offer my thanks to everyone who came out and competed on Saturday, it was a great day for Vintage on Long Island.  I’d also like to once again thank Brian Paskoff and all the Brothers Grim staff for their help throughout the day.

And I hope to see all of you guys again in December for N.Y.S.E. IV!

I'm not sure what makes me happier, reading this TO report or watching Jimmy Rollins destroy the hopes and dreams of Dodgers fans everywhere!  (see your Yanks in the World Series, Nick - still sure you want to play the Phils?)

This was an awesome tournament - its really exciting to have another regular Vintage event to attend.

I want to make sure Scott gets some big props - this was his first Vintage event, and his only two losses in the tournament were to me in the mirror... a slightly unfair advantage to me, given my 60+ rounds with Oath in '09.  Oath had a tremendous showing at this event with only 4 out of 53 in the event, and 2 in the top 4 (plus a finals split in the 16-man side event as well!).  Zendikar really charged up the Oath strategy.  I'll have a full report in my SCG article next Monday.

Props:

D3G - just another day at the office for us!
"Tiger" Steve - thanks for calling me out and getting me amped up.  You won't be booting me off the team any time soon...
Jeff - Beating Mastriano twice on the day in the mirror to get to the finals?  You're a better man than I.
Nick - congrats on the T8, sorry we couldn't play real Magic in that 3rd game.  I think that deck suits you well.
Scott - see you at the NYSE IV, great job in your first Vintage tournament.  Recruit your friends!
Austin - Nice job on the T8 with CB/Top, I still think you're onto something with that deck.

Slops:

"Thai" food - I'm still pretty sure that was ground cat, and rancid ground cat at that.
Truman Show-style rain clouds - It rained the entire drive to NY, then stopped, then immediately started again on the drive home... WTF?

Somewhere out there in cyberspace Steve (aka Josh) Nowakowski is laughing.  I didn't even realize that I had done it.  My apologies.

I do want to see the Phillies.  You've got a great team and it would be a great Series, but I honestly believe that this is the Yankees year.

Nick and Ralph are still my heroes for running Dragon SB into Tezz.  Conrgrats to the top 8 and to Walt for beating me again to get 9th. I really wanted those foil Carnival of Souls.  Maybe next time.

What was the sportsmanship prize based on?  I think I should won based solely on the fact that I helped The Tiger win two matches.

Maybe next time, we'll play for something of more significant value. ^.^ Cause I'm sure as hell tired of 9th place, lol.

Great event again, Nick. As I said before, when my friends and I are in a better financial circumstance, we'll definitely make the trip again. Hopefully in time for January's Black Lotus. And I'm still working on a frame for those Carnival of Souls.

And lastly, congrats to the top 8.

Jeff Folinus blast his way through another tourney.... Man that guy is good.

I am totally going to have to make it out to one of your future events. They sound like an utter blast to play in.

What is the weather like there in January?

It'll be cold but probably without snow.  The last few years it hasn't been that bad.  I'd love to see you make the event, not to mention that I heard that New York City was a great place to do anything in your free time.  The events have been a ton of fun, we have some great personalities that have made these events more than just a tournament.

Congrats again on your foil Carnival of Souls.  I definitely like them better than the Sorrow's Path's I gave out to 9th place last time.  Though they don't make their own decisions like the Floral Spuzzums I handed out the first time...

The sportsmanship prize was subjective and based on matches that I watched over the course of the day.  I was looking for a player who was courteous to his opponent and generally decent the whole day.  Sportsmanship is going to be a tough prize in this community because we have so many players who make the concerted effort to be decent - it makes our format unlike the others.  There were many, many people there on Saturday that easily deserved a sportsmanship prize, Dave was the lucky one.

Sportsmanship will be something that goes to an individual once in all likelihood.  I'll be on the lookout for fresh blood next time.

I'm just happy I got to eject James Hangley into the Snapple Bracket and put him on tilt!  They were epic games, to be sure.  Thanks Nick for running the event, it was great.  I hope to see everyone from here at my event in NJ on November 21st! (see my signature for details).

Was there was only 1 mono R workshop deck in the entire field? How in the world did this single stax deck make top8? I think it's extremely surprising how there were 7 5cStax decks in the swiss, but none of them made the top8. The fact that the single mono R workshop deck made the top8 seems to be telling me that this was probably a total fluke. What a joke.

Nick, once again, great tournament. I had a great time and the people who didn't come missed out on a hell of a tournament. I'm glad to see these growing in size and 53 people should be a good indication of how many people we could see coming for future events.

Props:
Nick, Brian Paskoff and the Brothers Grim staff for putting on a great event.
Everyone coming from out of the state to show their support.
Jimmy Hangely for having an extremely awesome match with me, one so epic the table collapsed.
Sphinx of the Steel Wind for being Pro-red so I didn't have to worry about active Welders.
Max Brown for beating people with a 20/20 Flying, Indestructible token.
Dave Gans for being the awesome guy that he is.

Slops:
Route 25 for owning me. Next time I'm so making sure I print up directions on how to get home.
Me for not going out to the bar after the tournament.
My deck for crapping out on me in the T8. Oh well, there's always next time.

Dude, that mono-red stax deck was a deck built and piloted by my teammate Ici Li and it is CERTAINLY no joke. You go on thinking that while he cleans your clock every time. That deck is for real and he's probably the best pilot of that deck that I know. Too bad he doesn't make it to more events or he'd be top-8-ing at all of 'em. I think 5-color lists are actually less optimal than mono-red because they run too many tutors and unnecessary bombs that cloud the idea of the deck as a "hard lock" strategy. IMHO. Careful before you jump to conclusions on what's a fluke and a joke.

That mono red stax deck is the truth.  Many people have picked it up, and quickly put it back down.  It is one of the more dfficult stax builds to pilot properly, and within time.  Only two people have played this deck.  If you look at the match win percentages and tournament history of the deck, the results speak for themselves.  And if my understanding is correct, the Oath deck he lost to in the top 8 is the same deck he beat in the swiss.  Congrats Ici on another strong finish.

I don't believe that's correct, since I beat Scott in round 3.  I'm pretty sure he had to win / ID out from there to make the T8.  He was running 2x Hellkite, 1x Akroma main so his build was much better against Shop decks than one running just Iona.

There were two 5CStax decks that were in contention entering the last round, but both lost.  There was a fair amount of Oath in the field (which is a very swingy matchup) and a fair amount of Dredge (which is the predator for Shops).  With Shops at 15% of the field, even with bad matches, you had to think that one of them was going to make top 8.  That said, I think one of the 5CStax decks would have been better suited to take the whole thing down, as Mono Red has no flexibility, no tutoring, and is severely limited in its sideboard options.

@Jostin - Ici(Mono-Red Stax) played against Bernie who was running the same 75 as Elias, like Matt said their matchup versus Stax is likely a bit worse than his Top 8 opponents.  I think that Mono-Red Stax and Null Rod Stax in general is a legitimate strategy in Vintage but Stax as a whole has not been performing well locally as it was a couple months ago.

Thanks for running another great tournament Nick, event ran very smoothly and good times were had by all.  Anyone that plays in the tri-state area should really make it down for these tournaments as the quality of opponents is high and they have a good atmosphere.

I 4-2'd with 5c stax on saturday with my loses being a Mr Nick Coss and a Mr Austin Q Heywood.  Wether 5c or mono r is better its just a preference on play style. I dont believe either is better than the other.

If this is Ralph Parsinitz I would have you know that the only person to ever knock me out of contention in Philly is Mastriano.  Once, in round 5 of the 'New Jersy Open', a second time in the finals at 'Philly Con III".  I got my revenge on him at the Dan Herd tourney though.

There recently has been a big difference in answering the question how many lands to pack in Tezz. While before many builds with 16 lands without Library have performed well, now builds with just 13 lands seem to come up. Any conclusion which configuration is better? I could imagine the 13 land build to have many problems against Staxx.

I was waiting on an email from one of the employees, though I never got it.  I had borrowed a digital camera for N.Y.S.E. II - I'll be doing that again for N.Y.S.E. IV.  I'm awful with technology though, so I might ask one of the other guys to put the pictures up for me after I've taken them.
