I'm considering going all out this spring, and offering some awesome prizes out there in the hopes that we can have a really sick event in the USA.

Entry Fee: $40 (similar to the 25 Euro fees that BoM has)
10 Proxies

Guaranteed Prize Structure:

1st: 5x UL Moxen
2nd: Ancestral, Time Walk, Timetwister
3rd: Black Lotus
4th: Black Lotus
5th: Mox Sapphire
6th: Mox Jet
7th: Mox Ruby
8th: Mox Emerald
9th-16th: Mana Drain
17th-32nd: 1x Blue Dual (Sea x4, Trop x4, Tundra x4, Volcanic x4)

More insane prizes for budget, unpowered, etc.

Obviously I would be there, although my record at the Philly Convention Center is absolutely awful for whatever reason.

I would seriously try, if I could find anyone else from Canada (Hamilton) to go with (since i don't drive and won't fly).

I think you should hold it at a more centralized location, at least within Pensylvania.  Pittsburgh already was roughly a ten hour drive for those of us from the Midwest to attend the Steel City tournament.  An extra 4-5 hours of driving is the stains.

I'd be there, but I can say with virtual certainty with that prize structure you'll lose money. There's no way you'd have more than 180 people, and for that kind of prize pool you need 250-300. The USA is too spread out for us to have the kind of tournaments that Europe has, unfortunately.

Sadly, I have to agree with JACO on this one. On the other hand, I would drag every Vintage player I know to this thing.

Ditto, but it is a SICK idea and I would try and fly out if time and work permitted.

One idea is to try to get a group of sponsors for this to fractionate the risk of attendance coming up short.  It would be awful if you put up that entire support structure only to take a personal hit on attendance like people have been suggesting.  But, if 2 or 3 people pooled their cards and put up a joint structure, for a proportionate share of the entrance fees, the risk to each individual goes down significantly.

Also.  I have never in my 13+ year Magic career traveled farther than NY for a tournament, and even then I've only gone farther than the next state away on extremely rare occasions.  However, I would make every effort possible to attend an event of this magnitude in PA.

This is how I would change the Prize Structure.

1st: Ancestral, Walk, Lotus
2nd: Jet, Sapphire, Ruby
3rd: Lotus
4th: Emerald, Pearl
5th: Jet
6th: Ruby
7th: Emerald
8th: Pearl
9th-16th: Italian Drain

This structure allows you to change Sapphire for Pearl (~$60), change drains to italian (~$180) and cut out the Twister (~165).  This also allows you to cut  out the blue duals.    The structure I had saves you over $1000 in estimated value.    That's 25 people you wouldn't need at $40 each for entrance.

Of course, you could have the blue duals for 17-32, based on attendance.

I'd be there and hopefully have a slew of 4-5 teammates in my knapsack.

EDIT: I could talk to Alex Schwartzman at King's Games if this starts to become a real possibility. Drop me a P.M at some point if you want any assistance.

I might move to Philadelphia because of a tournament like that.  Yes.

Vintage is a lovely format, it's too bad so few people can play because the supply of power is so small.

Chess really changed when they decided to stop making Queens and Bishops.  I'm just glad I got my copies before the prices went crazy.

I'd love to see a tourney of this magnitude so close to home. I would literally drag everyone from Penn State I possibly could to this regardless of whether they play T1 or not.

That said, I would have to agree with what others said: You'd be losing money with your original prize structure.  I think it's unrealistic to try something similar to Bazaar of Moxen simply based on geography.  Perhaps a revised prize structure, like the one Soly proposed, would be wiser?

Nick, I think at Philly Open 4 you should get players' general consensus about this since many in the area don't post on TMD.  I would suspect that most dedicated players wouldn't mind $40 and 10 proxies.  But would the casual T1 players that you want to attract to help attendance still be interested?  Granted the prize support alone should be enough to attract most, but I can't speak for them.

Could be fun but PA is a little too far away for me and my group.  It'll be hard enough trying to get to Chicago for the next ICBM Extreme Open.  Something this big with enough publication could be HUGE!  You'd definately get overseas players with the original prize structure.

What if you did a two day event with day one having the nuts structure and day day having a more moderate structure? One thing I noticed in the discussion for ICBM and the Pittsburgh event is most people were not willing to travel to these events unless it was a multi-day thing. I know there are plenty of things to do tourist wise in our city, but so does Chicago and Pittsburgh.

Either way, I'll be there! I love walking to major events ^.^
