Happy new year everyone

Here are the first cards from the second extension from the Zendikar block.

And look what we have :

Quote
Name:  Ricochet Trap
Cost: 3R
Type: Instant - Trap
Rules Text: If an opponent cast a Blue spell this turn, you may pay {R} rather than pay Ricochet Trap’s mana cost.
Change the target of target spell with a single target.
Illus. Jaime Jones
Rarity: Uncommon
Set Number: #87/145

It's definitely not THE Ultimate spoiler, but for those who play some ricochet spells (and there are a few), the ACC is nice.

Other cards you might want to play if your stack has a given orientation :

For the cyclers lovers :
Quote
Quest for the Nihil Stone
   b
Enchantment    Rare
Whenever an opponent discards a card, you may put a quest counter on Quest for the Nihil Stone.
At the Beginning of each opponent's upkeep, if that player has no cards in hand and Quest for the Nihil Stone has two quest counters on it, you may have that player lose 5 life.

Sounds a little to conditional to me.

What about ritual speed-Brainstorm Jace ?

Quote
Jace, the Mind Sculptor
   2uu
Planeswalker - Jace    Mythic Rare
[+2]: Look at the top card of target player's library. You may put that card on the bottom of that player's library.
  • : Draw three cards, then put two cards from your hand on top of your library in any order.
  • [-1]: Return target creature to its owner's hand.
[-12]: Exile all cards from target player's library, then that player shuffles his or her hand into his or her library.
    Illus. Jason Chan #31/145   3
Bad news is : its ultimate power will never be reached, and yet, it's not that "ultimate". Might be a very interesting drawer though (better than Tower of fortune ?)

So far, nothing that makes me badly want to do the preview to get the cards, but it's only the beginning.

Let us know if something catch your sight Wink

This will simply alway replace itself, basically, it read: Brainstorm, prevent 5-6 damage. Brainstorm is already weak in this format, I can't see this card being played at all, faaaaar from Tower of Fortune.

Richochet trap is ok, better than Shunt, but still meh.

Quest for the Nihil Stone is unplayble. First you need 2 players to discard cards, which should happen, but might take a while. Then you need someone empty ended, which should also happen at some point, but will take a while, after all that, you don't even get to choose which player it hits and it only does 5 damage. If I want to do 5 damage at sorcery speed, I'll play Lava Axe, at least I'll choose the target.

Quote
Mysteries of the Deep
   4u
Instant    Common
Draw two cards.
Landfall - If you had a land enter the battlefield under your control this turn, draw three cards instead.

Nothing special but this is ok, Inspiration is playable, this is better since it doesn't target and maybe you'll draw 3 cards one day...

Quote
Celestial Colonnade

Land    Rare
Celestial Colonnade enters the battlefield tapped.
{T}: Add {W} or {U} to your mana pool.
3{W}{U}: Until end of turn, Celestial Colonnade becomes a 4/4 white and blue Elemental creature with flying and vigilance. It's still a land.

I'd but curious about that, yes it's a small creature, but the fact that it's uncounterable and there to attack or block only when you want it to, and to evade Wrath effects might make it ok.

We both agree on the first cards. The inspiration-like might be interesting, but it doesn't target (can be a kill by decking someone).

I haven't think about the 4/4 manland as an addition to my stack. Unfortunately it comes into play tapped. It's middle, to me, such all the things so far.

I guess T4 players are going to miss Alara a while Wink

Crap, it does come into play tapped, I missed that part. A bit weaker, but still, maybe.

At for the Draw 2, I rarely see people decking themselves, well no, but I rarely see games where 2 more turns would have made a difference when the player is decking himself, I do however often see Misdirection, Willbender and other get played. Not great, but certainly on par with Impulse or Telling Time, if not better.

Edit: Hey, I misread the Quest, I thought you had to sacrifice it to make 5 damage. Still sucks thought  Wink

Novablast Wurm

Creature - Wurm    Mythic Rare

Well, we got at least one goody so far. Hope there is more to come.

Hmmm, I can't see how you compare the two. The wurm is made to attack for 7 and kill everything and the Prophet is very defensive as no one will want to attack you, you can even kill it yourself to reset the board. Also, it RFG creatures, which often makes an impact.

I agree on what you say about the Prophet, but any flyer can ignore it without problem. The exile ability - which I had forgot - still makes a difference. Well. I guess I'll keep both until someone say otherwise.

Here's a new fatty :
Quote
Name:   Terastodon
Cost:    6GG
Type:    Creature - Elephant
Pow/Tgh:    9/9
Rules Text:    When Terastodon enters the battlefield, destroy up to three target noncreature permanents. For each permanent put into a graveyard this way, it's controller puts a 3/3 green Elephant creature token onto the battlefield.
Illus.    Lars Grant-West
Rarity:    Rare

Nice body, and an immediate ability to destroy bothering things with a small counterpart.

I guess everyone has seen this uglyness for every format :
Quote
Name:   Treasure Hunt
Cost:    1U
Type:    Sorcery
Rules Text:    Reveal cards from the top of your library until you reveal a nonland card, then put all cards revealed this way into your hand.
Illus.    Daren Bader
Rarity:    Common
Set Number:    #42/145

In most stacks it reads : "draw your whole deck, have fun with your ACC". A must-be-countered, so.

And another angel I don't know what to think of :
Quote
Name:   Archon of Redemption
Cost:    3WW
Type:    Creature - Archon
Pow/Tgh:    3/4
Rules Text:    Flying
Whenver Archon Of Redemption or another creature with flying enters the battlefield under your control, you may gain life equal to that creature's power.
Illus.    Steve Belledin
Rarity:    Rare
Set Number:    #3/145

The "with flying" restriction makes it too narrow an ability, I guess.

And last :
Quote
Name:   Eye of Ugin
Type:    Legendary Land
Rules Text:    Colorless Eldrazi spells cost {2} less to cast.
{7}, {T}: Search your library for a colorless creature card, reveal it and put it in your hand. Then shuffle your library.
Illus.    James Paick
Rarity:    Rare
Set Number:    #136/145

For now, the Eldrazi reduction thing is just a spoiler for things to come, but the tutoring ability on an uncounterable body is nice, especially if you have a lot of artifacts creatures in your stack (Suncrusher, Bosh, Draco, Duplicant... what else ? May be *a bit* too narrow)...

Terastodon is very nice, although you may not always have 3 permanents to destroy, it still rocks since it clears the board of those pesky enchantements and lands are to get rid of. Way better than the destroy 3 ultimatum.

Treasure hunt is actually pretty balanced. We already play with Mind Spring in my stack. Any draw X spell as sorcery will make you discard down to 5 anyway. This may even be dangerous for you if you don't run enough lands. Think it's worth trying.

Archon of Redemption isn't good enough, too small body, no vigilance and too narrow effect.

Eye of Ugin is ok, but you need to draft accordingly, cause there aren't THAT many artifact creatures.

Another one just spoilers that will definitively make it in.

Quote
Marshal's Anthem
   2ww
Enchantment    Rare
Multikicker 1{W}
Creatures you control get +1+1.
When Marshal's Anthem enters the battlefield, return up to X target creatures from your graveyard to the battlefield, where X is equal to the number of times Marshal's Anthem was kicked.

You reanimate your graveyard and keep a +1+1 for you only on the board, I think that's an excellent late game card.

Terastodon's wording makes it very playable since it says : "up to three target". Then you can destroy only one.

Marshall thing is nice, I guess it can replace an old card with somehow same effect. Just have to find which one Wink

I thinks it's time to reread Treasure Hunt.

Marshal's Anthem is friggin' insane.  The best card spoiled so far, though I will always high-pick the boring-but-highly-functional Mysteries of the Deep.

EDIT: if you play with an "any ACC = free spell" rule, then Ricochet Trap is very nearly a Misdirection you don't have to pitch a blue card to, which would make *it* the best card spoiled so far.  But I ignored it, because to be free in my stack, the trap cost would have to be {0} or you would have to have a red mana source.

Ahem. I guess I was a little too enthusiastic about Treasure hunt in peasant.

However.

Here is an ugly removal, in the right line from Swords, Path, Resounding silence and Unmake
Quote
Name:   Nemesis Trap
Cost:    4BB
Type:    Instant - Trap
Rules Text:    If a white creature is attacking you, you may pay {B}{B} rather than pay Nemesis Trap's mana cost.
Exile target creature, then put a token that is a copy of that creature onto the battlefield. Exile it at the beginning of the next end step.
Rarity:    Uncommon
Set Number:    #61/145

Want to have your opponent's big guy and do things to him with it ? Yes you can Wink
It's an awful trick : you declare attackers, I play this (for free, why not with ACC rules) and block with it.

So far, I have seen these to include in my stack (which tends to grow bigger and bigger these days) :

Nemesis trap (in place of Annihilate - Yeah, I still had this old one)
Terastodon (in place of Violent ultimatum ?)
Marshal's Anthem (in place of ???)
Novablast wurm (if I can get hands on one, may be a little too slow)
may be ricochet trap

Not that bad so far.

Graoy !

This one is big enough and interesting :
Quote
Name:  Wrexial, the Risen Deep
Cost: 3UUB
Type: Legendary Creature - Kraken
Pow/Tgh: 5/8
Rules Text: Islandwalk, swampwalk
Whenever Wrexial, the Risen Deep deals combat damage to a player, you may cast target instant or sorcery card from that player's graveyard without paying its mana cost. If that card would be put into a graveyard this turn, exile it instead.
Rarity: Mythic Rare
Set Number: #120/145

Its walking abilities are pretty useful useless  but then if it connects, it steals a card from opponent's graveyard. Nice. May be a bit too slow.

Pretty much like Mindleech mass, but people might actually let it connect once in a while because they will know what to expect and won't loose their best card in hand. Although it doesn't trample, I think it's still very fun.

This set is pretty weak from what I can tell.  Looks like you guys saw most of the standouts.

How about Bojorkia Bog? A land that comes into play and removes someone's graveyard is both uncounterable (mostly) and doesn't count as your SPT.  Not the greatest, but worth noting.

I REALLY like Nemesis Trap-  It might be the best card here.  Not only can you Exile something annoying, but you get to borrow it?!? As it's worded here you'll even get comes into play effects, which is really nice.  You may even want to use it on your own creature in some situations (Draining Welk/Mystic Snake/Venser come to mind).

Terastadon is also good.  A CIP effect this potent can be easily abused with a lot of things and can even turn unwanted stuff of your own into 3/3's in a pinch.  I like that it's worded in such a way tht you dont have to target 3 permanents to make it work.

Marshal's Anthem is an awesome one-sided reanimate spell with a nice little +1/+1 bonus.  Probably good enough for most, but I set the bar pretty high for Enchantments, and I dont think this is quite good enough for my stack.

The rest of this stuff isnt very exciting, IMO.  Novablast Wurm is unlikely to ever survive long enough to kill anything, and Wrexial has similar problems.  The other cards here are barely worth mentioning.

Cards I am looking at for my stack:

Marshal's Anthem - Amazing in quick pick-up-and-play games with a common graveyard. Reminds me of Nezumi Graverobber.
Goliath Sphinx - May not make the cut as a french vanilla. But if I get a foil copy.... BTW, does anything search for or care about Sphinxes yet??? Any tribal support?
Jace - Sure why not.
Thada Adel, Acquisitor - If she lives, and if her islandwalk "works" in your playgroup, she becomes a Tought Dissector every turn. And T4 artifacts are insane!
Abyssal Persecutor - What do other people think about him in T4? Politically interesting or not?
Butcher of Malakir - 5/4 Flyer with mass removal.
Dead Reckoning - Wizards: add red to the mix and make this return to play direct damage at instant speed PLEASE!!!
Nemesis Trap - See previous discussion
Stone Idol Trap - Instant speed 6/12 blocker that can swing on my next turn.
Omnath - RAWR!!! Yet another Spinal Embrace target.
Terastodon - Very good fatty with built-in removal as others have said. Auto include.
Novablast Wurm - Auto include.
Wrexial, the Risen Deep - Another Mindleach Mass. Better if your playgroup let's him walk.
Bojuka Bog?
Celestial Colonnade - Probably the only rare manland for my stack. Serra Angel on a land is pretty good.

Nezumi GAMErobber did still from others' graveyard. Quite note the same. The Anthem is nice, though.

Goliath Sphinx - May not make the cut as a french vanilla. But if I get a foil copy.... BTW, does anything search for or care about Sphinxes yet??? Any tribal support?
Err. It's only a 8/7 flight. It's WAAAAY below the line...

Jace - Sure why not.
The only interest is to brainstorm for free at sorcery speed each turn. It self replaces, but it very likely to die anyway. Not that tremendous in the format.

Thada Adel, Acquisitor - If she lives, and if her islandwalk "works" in your playgroup, she becomes a Tought Dissector every turn. And T4 artifacts are insane!
Weak body, slow ability, which is already done by other cards at instant speed. Not a chance.

Abyssal Persecutor - What do other people think about him in T4? Politically interesting or not?
Err. Hard to say. Somebody might want to keep you/your abyssal persecutor alive since it will keep him alive. Maybe worth a try.

Butcher of Malakir - 5/4 Flyer with mass removal.
Slooow. False prophet is weaker but exile everybody when he dies. Soul Defiler kills a critter at each player's upkeep. Thraximundar kills one right away the turn it comes. I play these three, and don't want to replace any with the butcher (there aren't that many cards in T4 - in my stack at least - forcing someone to sacrifice a creature).

Dead Reckoning - Wizards: add red to the mix and make this return to play direct damage at instant speed PLEASE!!!
As you said : miss the instant speed to be nice. In my full common stack, ok. In my big'n'ugly, nope.

Nemesis Trap - See previous discussion
Nothing more to say Smile

Stone Idol Trap - Instant speed 6/12 blocker that can swing on my next turn.
I don't know what to think about this. Bogardan Hellkite is better, for example. Not convinced at all.

Omnath - RAWR!!! Yet another Spinal Embrace target.
It's either a 1/1 or a infinite/infinite. So it must be countered. If you don't want to play shivan dragon, why not, but, well....

Terastodon - Very good fatty with built-in removal as others have said. Auto include.
Nothing more to say

Novablast Wurm - Auto include.
A bit slow, so I guess it won't make the cut.

Wrexial, the Risen Deep - Another Mindleach Mass. Better if your playgroup let's him walk.
Mhm. Not convinced on second toughts. It's below the line when compared with the others creatures of my stack.

Bojuka Bog
Nice and uncouterable. May be I'll get one (it shouldn't be that hard to find).

Celestial Colonnade - Probably the only rare manland for my stack. Serra Angel on a land is pretty good.
But COB tapped. Which is a pity. At least it's free. Depends on how expensive this card will be.

Unfortunately the wording in the MTG Salvation spoiler was wrong: Nemesis Trap is not a strict upgrade from Unmake, and I am no longer interested in running it at all.

Now Eye of Ugin is a card that really wishes it could be good.  I counted, and colorless creature cards make up only 9/400 in my stack, Memnarch, Bosh, and Pentavus being the only ones I consider top notch (okay Masticore is pretty good too).  However, you only have to get one activation to break even, so if you drafted either Memnarch or 3+ other colorless creatures, I could see this card being pretty good in your deck.  I like pushing "techy" cards like this whose value changes dramatically depending on the surrounding deck (cf. Buried Alive), so I think I'll give it a chance.  (I am not, however, expecting it to earn a permanent spot.)

Exile if a plus for sure, but the real difference is that you get a COPY of the creature, not just a token with the same stats. That means you can abuse any activated ability that card had or any other abilities if you get to use it on your turn.
