Lots of interesting lists. The biggest question I have is for Steve: why Lightning Bolt over Fire/Ice or any of the other usual suspects?

I assume it's because of the lower converted mana cost for Confidant flips.

The biggest questions I have are for the guy who played the UG deck with maindeck Vedalken Heretic, Favor of the Overbeing, and Murkfiend Liege with sideboard Spreading Seas: Did you play anyone playing Fish? And how demoralized were they when you resolved Favor of the Overbeing followed by Murkfiend Liege? Did you consider Shorecrasher Mimic and Mystic Snake? How is this deck's matchup versus Vampires?

PS: Kudos on the deck.

I am just so mad at myself when I was in top and in game three versus tezzeret I did not take the brainstorm on the thoughtseize turn one.  I am also surprised that no one else was playing dark depths combo besides me.

You really REALLY should have taken it, it pretty much won me the game.
You weren't the only one playing Dark Depths combo, my friend Joe George was playing it in mono-black and winning games with it, too.
Kudos on that B/G list, it looks pretty awesome, a lot of fun too!

Steve, thanks for the lists and congratulations on the win.
Your list has 61 cards and 26 mana, that's really unconventional. Props for Lightning Bolt!  Smile

Missing cards:
Marland's list is 1 card short
Matt's list misses one card

My (Matt) list is missing Yawg Will.

These events have been a lot of fun, so hopefully I can return for more.  I'm also interested to hear how the bolt worked out, as I only got to see it drawn in the mirror.

Am I right in thinking that Steve was playing Tezzeret with out the Tezzeret?

Hrm.
My decklist should be 60 cards.  I'll post the corrections to the three decklists shortly.

The Field:
4 Tezzeret
4 Oath
4 Fish (3 UGW, 1 UGWb)
3 TPS
2 Ad Nauseam
3 Stax (1 5c Stax, 1 BR Stax, 1 Staxless Stax)
2 Workshop Aggro (1 MUD, 1 Mono Red Workshop Aggro)
1 Reanimator
1 Suicide Black
1 Dredge

I am guessing you counted my deck as a fish deck.  BUT where is the white in my deck????? The Mox Pearl was in there just to throw people off, and as an extra free mana source. It was pure blue and green only lol.  I want my own spot on the decklists Razz

Thank you.  The deck was so Linear it was crazy.  99% of the time the hand was "first turn noble, turn 2 selkie/heretic/trygon, turn 3 favor with mana leak/force back up."  As I tried to tell multiple people there the deck was NOT NOT NOT NOT fish, it is BBS with green splash.  Fish uses things like burn and bounce and wastelands to mess up the board til they can finish with small critters. My deck plays only 1 selkie or 1 heretic with a couple nobles maybe, and the Favor, with lots of counter back up to keep it alive, that's BBS style not fish. I chose Favor over Rancor in the long run because of my decks weaknesses to Darkblast and Fire/Ice.  That extra 2 HP, not to mention FLYING!!!(still the best evasion ability, when they didn't have islands), and vigilance so I could attack and block those nasty confidants.  Selkie + Favor = Ancestral every turn, and with 13 Counterspells maindeck......well you get the idea.  Honestly I think I had 5 games where people quit once I got selkie with a favor on him, so glad I chose it over rancor.

I wish I had taken enuff notes to do a full tournament report, but in short:

Game 1 vs Stax - 2-0 Trygon ftw simple enuff. Even platinum angel can't stop a Trygon with Favor on it.

Game 2 vs Tendrils usingAdnaseuam.
Anyways, he went duress first turn, followed by 2 moxes, some rituals, and Adnauseam into drawing for the first turn kill.
Game 2 I got first turn noble, mox sapphire, and spell pierce a Demonic Tutor, then dropped selkie with favor, and forced another key spell, then just drew 4 cards a turn and called it GG.
Game 3, I decided to play slow, I laid Mox Emerald/Noble, and stripped his Underground Sea, then a 2nd turn trygon got rid of moxen/mana vault, and no mana = no combo.
2-1

Game 3 was against a Tezz deck with Dark Confidants.
Game one double spell pierce and selkie with 2 nobles = gg
Game 2, I just drew the nuts.  Stole his ancestral with a Misdirection, and spell pierced his backup FOW, leaving him with no cards, and me with lots = gg

Game 4 and 5 I just ID'd, against Oath, and the Depths Combo deck (props on that and how far you got great deck and great talking to you!)

Top 8 I play the same 5 color stax deck that I had went 2-0 against earlier, and we even played for fun before the tourney, and I think I won like 8/10 times pre side, but in the t8, he just got the nuts.
Something like first or 2nd turn tinker into Sundering Titan, followed by powder keg, and the other game was 2 welders, and Jar.  He made me chuck all 3 trygons, and 4 selkies.  Not much I could do.

Pros:
-Making top 8 after not playing Vintage or really any magic since I "quit" in 2003.
-Making top 8 with a deck I made in 40 minutes on MWS and play testing 5 games online the friday before the tournament.
-Meeting so many people who love magic as much as me.
-for Wizards restricting all good blue draw, and thus making draw creatures such as confidant, selkie, and heretic possible.
-VIP CARDS: Misdirection-Stole 3 Ancestrals!!!!! And of course won each of those games. Favor of the Overbeing....on a selkie, heretic or trygon, its just sick, oh, and it pitches to Force of Will/Misdirection.

Cons:
-Not getting higher than top 6. I played against the Oath deck for fun, and destroyed it surprisingly.  I "guessed" it would be a bad match.
-Not getting to play against the Depths deck or against Steve.  I beleive those 2 decks would have been my worst match ups, and who doesn't wanna play their worst and see how they would do?
-Not getting to go to Thurman's  Sad I just didn't have the time or $.  Maybe next time.
-For vintage not being much different than it was 7 years ago, except every deck removed 3 newly restricted draw cards, and added a Tezz, Voltaic Key, and Time Vault.

Great tourney steve, and thanks for the heads up on the next one being march 14th, I let a lot more people know, and since they have so much time to plan for it, I think I will get more down this time.  See ya then!

Oh, and if any changes, I would remove the 2 leige, as I NEVER EVER cast them, because my opponent either quit before I cast it, or I just didn't get them, and put in a brainstorm, and Fact or Fiction, I think....or Maybe a twister and regrowth.....I donno.  Something like that.

I didn't play any fish so no clue, and no clue on vampires.  The spreading seas were there just cuz I couldn't think of another sideboard card, dumb I know.  But I did turn a bazaar into an island for a win.  I don't know wat shorecrasher mimic is, and mystic snake is a really bad counterspell.

FYI: My decklist has 60 cards, and did not have Mana Vault, which was an error.

Matt's list has Yawgmoth's Will.

Marland's list has 1 card that says "1 M" and his list says 4 Bayou, but the 4 is written over with a 3 (I think).  So, I'm not sure on that one.

FYI:

And especially to Greg:

March 13th, which we had tentatively scheduled for the next Vintage tournament, happens to be the same weekend as the SCG Open in Indy.

I'm concerned that having our tournament up against such a major Eternal tournament may be unwise. That's why I haven't posted a tournament announcement.  Thoughts?

Well I personally would like to see it still happen, I know I'm not going to the SCG in Indy.  I will keep an eye out also.
