So my girl friend and I are hitting the west coast this spring. The itinerary looks roughly like this:
3 days SF/Oakland/Berkeley
3 days wine country
5-6 days driving up Rt. 1
6 days bewteen Portland/Seattle/Vancouver/Victoria
3 days Chicago/Madison
Yeah it's going to be a whirlwind.
1) I'm open to suggestions for any of the geographies I've mentioned, but I'm specifically in the dark about good spots along the stretch from Mendocino to Portland. We've heard about North Bend and Gold Beach, but there's got to be more.
2) It's going to be 20+ days on the road and I don't know lots of people in the area. Any tips/good websites on how to stay cheaply?
3) We're probably going to be renting a car for most of it. I'm looking at hotwire, rentawreck and others, but if people have ideas on rental deals please share.
Lastly, while I don't plan on making this a very magic-intensive event, I've played at the Berkeley shop in the past and would definitely be up for meeting some fellow TMD'ers.

A thing to do if you can fit it in would be to drive from San Luis Obispo to Monterey along the 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) and running through Big Sur. That route is widely considered to be in the top 5 of the most beautiful stretches of road in the U.S. Along the way there are hikes, beaches, vistas, and elephant seals to check out. Cambria is an excellent place to stop for a few hours to check out in more detail.

I spent a week in Victoria a few years ago, and that whole area was the most beautiful place I had ever seen. I'd really love to go back some day. I would visit the Hoh Rain Forest if you are able. It has a "primordial" wooded area with mossy trees that are hundreds of years old and ferns everywhere. Also, the Olympic Mountain Range is absolutely stunning. Look for a place called Hurricane Ridge, which is a set of trails that travel along the spine of it. There are deer everywhere, and the view is phenomenal. In some places you can see white peaks for 180 degrees around, facing off against the Pacific.

Do not go to Madison Steve. DO NOT. Spend your 3 days in Chicago - if by spring you mean baseball time, make your way to wrigley (it really is beautiful), find a Lou Malnati's or Duo's for deepdish, and check out the museum of contemporary art. A very nice (and not too expensive) meal can be had at the Grand Lux Cafe. If you have the money, I highly recommend Tru for a meal (prix fix starts at around $100, so expect $3-400 for you and the g/f if you'd like wine.)
Rt. 1 is beautiful, make sure to stop and takes lot of pictures. Spent some time around Santa Cruz/wine country on a tennis trip, very nice area.
Seattle is blegh, it rains too much, and is basically NE without snow. I hear good things about Vancover though.

You guys are crazy Madison is a beautiful city. It is super liberal which means there are bike trails everywhere, relaxed marijuana laws, and low crime rates. It also happens to be one of the top party cities in the country.
Chicago would be awesome if it wasnt for the people who live there.

There are some garbage parts and then there are some rich nice parts. Although I do agree it looks a bit out of place when you compare it to Berkley or SF. |

Oakland has some nice areas and some bad areas. It has a bad rep. Steve, let me know if you want a place to stay near wine country. I'm in Woodland, and I have a spare bedroom. |
