Philly Open V
Running tournaments is always fun for me; even the weeks of planning, the thousands of dollars I put into prizes, the venue, the staff, the myriad of other expenses that crop up are all worth it in the end, to know that I was the reason players woke up, traveled, played, and had a great time.  Sometimes I make a lot of money, sometimes I lose money.  I hope to myself that it all works out in the end, but having fun running these tournaments keeps me doing them.

This time around I wanted to prepare for a TON of people, since my last event had around 250 players between the Standard and the Vintage events (177 and 68, respectively).  Unfortunately, I think Mother Nature had other plans this time around.  While Philadelphia and the surrounding areas were spared a good deal of the bad weather that battered the Northeastern US, I got emails, calls, and texts from dozens saying they weren't able to make it.  That, and the great turnout the Richmond Star City Games Open (561 players!) had combined to make this past weekend a less then stellar turnout for the “larger” Extended event, which had 65 players.  The Vintage community came through, and 82 players showed up to battle it out on Saturday, and 23 players on Sunday.  Whoever says that Vintage is dying is just wrong.  Changing, moving, evolving, absolutely, but dying is not a term I'd use for Vintage.

Thank you all for driving, playing, and having a great time.  If you ever think that I should be doing something differently please PM me or email me and let me know.

With eighty-two players, I present:

The Modern Vintage Metagame.

Tezzeret: 19
Oath:  11
Shop Aggro: 9
Dredge: 9
Stax: 8
TPS: 5
Two-Card Monte: 4
Noble Fish: 4
BUG Fish: 2
The Deck: 2
Dark Times: 2
Ad Nauseam: 1
UR Fish: 1
Landstill: 1
Elves!: 1
Belcher: 1
MUD: 1
Faeries: 1

Total: 82

Tezzeret and Oath both have a wide variety of builds, so the size of these archetypes reflect this.  Some players opted for the more traditional Hellkite Overlord/Iona configuration, while others chose Team Reflection's Terrastadon build of the deck.  Tezzeret as an archetype shows it's flexibility, with 7 different builds of the deck.

As the only other witness I can contest that the cover-dispenser never stood a chance.

You powered yourself to that finish sir, excellent work on the day.  I was really excited to see that the deck could perform in a large Vintage event.  Thanks for helping to validate the deck!

And to everyone that said hi and thanked me for the articles - it made Saturday an awesome day for me.  Writing is a pretty thankless job, so to talk to that many people that read my stuff was a great feeling.

Mr. Coss a wonderful event.  Glad i made it and glad i didn't spend a night in a philly jail.  Might not have been the best line of play. Sleeping in a jail that is.

I also had good times at the event, wished I could have played a bit tighter against Brassman and Elias but such is life.  Anyone remotely in the areas should definitely make the trek out for the next Philly Open, hopefully with some nice weather for once.

can we see some updated POTY standings?

Player of the Year Standings are available at http://phillycollectables.com/poty.htm.  Don't worry Max, you're still first (after Saturday anyway) but that margin is very narrow.  See you on the 13th!

I'm not sure how many people understand how close Jimmy here was to going to spend the night in Philadelphia... not by choice...

Then again, he's Thor

Yup, I know.  I don't have the tournament files on my pc, since I hire someone to run the tornament.  I'll see them this Saturday and update everything.

Alright, I'll wait for the top 8 results before I post the lists.
If everything fails I post the lists in the above order next week.

I don't know the Swiss standings, so I'm not sure how to rank 3/4 or 5th through 8th, but here's the basic breakdown:

1st Jesse Martin

2nd Jake Gans

3/4 Matt Elias
3/4 Dominic Difebo

5/8 Sean Robbins
5/8 Andy Probasco
5/8 Chris Materewicz
5/8 Brad Barton

Thanks for the final standings.
The list of Sean Robbins misses one card maindeck, and 2 cards sideboard.

Thanks for the updated info Matt, I appreciate it.  Your article was bad ass by the way, an accurate representation of the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast meta game instead of the fictional one created by morphling.de when you apply filters to tournaments.

When was Thirst unrestricted?  Or are the two decks with multiple Thirsts typos?

Well that's because Thirst For Knowledge hasn't been restricted in extended...yet

Thirst is pretty broken in Extended I must say, DDT feels so far ahead of every other deck in the format.
