28.. I started playing during Alpha/Beta with 3 friends in my neighborhood.... Well... we tried to play... We all played the same deck... LOTs of lands, Llanowars and Fireballs.... we thought you could play a land tap for elf, tap elf for elf etc.... In fact, we all shared a collection- even though one guy bought cases (he had a caddy job) and the rest of us didn't really contribute. It wasn't until about Ice Age where we found a group of people that knew how to really play and showed us....

What's somewhat interesting to me is that we currently have 116 votes here, and on MTGTheSource ('the' Legacy site, as far as I know) Steve's poll has 275 votes. There's definitely more than 2.5 times as many Legacy players as Vintage players, right?
They have 25k registered members (1500 of whom are 'active') while we have 18.5k members (no mention of 'active'). As I write this there are 16 TMD members on (including myself) while the Source has 43 members browsing.
Read into this what you will.

Vintage is a lovely format, it's too bad so few people can play because the supply of power is so small.
Chess really changed when they decided to stop making Queens and Bishops. I'm just glad I got my copies before the prices went crazy.

I've also observed this. However, I think the Source measures 'browsing' and 'members online' differenty than the mana drain. People who were recently on are counted on the source, whereas only people who are actually currently online are counted here. Still, there should be alot more votes in this thread. SOme of you are lazy!!!

I am a little surprised there hasn't been at least 1 person 16 or younger yet. Even if that person just browses and doesn't play a lot of Vintage tourneys.

I'm 52. Feel like I'm 72. Started playing Vintage around Mirrodin block. Shouldn't there be a special mulligan rule for us older players

It looks like I'm the sole 34 representative so far; although only a short 2 months until I enter the "other" open-ended category... I started playing during Revised (early '95), and my first sanctioned event was the Alliances Pre-release (yeah back when there were only two of them worldwide).

I'm really surprised by this. I figured it would have skewed higher. I always assumed Vintage was mostly players that started around the time of Revised. Had memories of the Power Nine, maybe didn't have them then, but once they got jobs could now afford to invest in their old memories and hobbies.
Great to see so many 21-27 yr olds. At least a new generation.

How many people that started back in revised are still playing anyways? My guess is very few. This game is 17 years old.

I agree, but would assume that newer players would gravitate towards the other formats, as Vintage (which in the past was largely motivated by nostalgia), wouldn't have much to offer. I'd be curious as to if the different age groups are attracted to Vintage for different reasons.
I think it's great to have so much fresh blood!

The average age doesn't surprise me at all, you need a lot of disposable income to play Magic, especially Vintage.

I'm 22 and started playing when Masques came out. Always had an interest in Vintage but really started getting into it in '06. I mostly just follow the format and play/test on MWS because I can't afford most cards. Still slowly buying staples. I DO have a full Nether Void-Vexing Shusher deck with collector's edition power that's about as close to a full vintage deck I have. I've tried to set up a couple tourneys but it seems like nobody plays constructed in Iowa period.

I'm 21, I have been playing since I was 5 years old, so that would be about when revised came out. Only ever played casual, and vintage once I was old enough to really get what was going on.

Well, I started playing Vintage when I was 16, also had some success with UW Fish. Hugo van Dijke was also active at that time, he is also my age, we met at the Worlds 2006 Vintage Sideevent in Paris, but I haven't heard anything of him since then. Currently I'm 19, but next month I'll be 20. So I guess you can add me as a 20 yrs old. edit: I just recorgnized that I joined TMD when I was 15.

as someone who started off playoff casually and went straight to Vintage, I have an answer of sorts. When I started playing I tried to get the most busted cards available...at one point in my early career- owning 4 fires of yavimaya was busted compared to everyone else...then I ran into a Vintage player and got schooled back to the stoneage. I realized that to play the most powerful decks...you needed to play Vintage, and every deck I built after that had to be better than the previous or I got rid of it. Counterspells in, creatures out....if it cost more than 3 mana it disappeared from my collection. I read every SSG p9 report and got my first restaurant job so that I could buy duals and forces. If not nostalgia, I think power and ambition attract people who are newer. It grabbed me...I think if I ever complete my goal of owning everything playable and win a big tourney...I might could quit...lol

As i stated before im 23. I started playing Magic by Urza's i think, with 11 y.old
The last deck i played in T2 was Psychatog, and that was the deck that i rotated with. I liked the deck so much that i kept playing in other formats where you could use it. Eventually i just went for Vintage, the starting point was my set of duals and FoW, got all of the ones i needed with a random guy selling his stuff. Got like 9 duals + a set of FoW for like 1/3 of the price.
Now im only playing TPS.

I wanted to thank everyone for their participation in this poll. I reported the results in my SCG article this week, and the results of an identical poll I took in the Legacy community. The average age of the Vintage community player was 26.52 years old. The mode age was 25, with 14.1% of the votes. However, the median age was 26. Vintage has already hit that critical threshold where more players are 25 or older than not. Perhaps more revealingly, 12% and almost 22% of the Legacy and Vintage communities, respectively, are 30 or older. On the flip side, only 14.4% and 2.8% of the Legacy and Vintage community players were under the age of 20. No one younger than 18 voted in the Vintage poll, and only 1% of respondents in the Legacy poll were 16 or younger. In short, Eternal formats aren’t serving 16 year olds. I decided to calculate it just for fun, and as of today I am 26.50 years old. I suppose there was no escaping that I would be a Vintage player. Interesting stuff, though. Thanks for putting this all together.
