I posted about this a few years ago, but figured I'd start a new thread rather than necro-ing.

I'm working at a summer camp where a group of kids play Magic.  Years ago, I could win with just about any deck, but kids have become more sophisiticated, intelligent, and wealthy, and they're starting to give me a run for my money.

Most of my cards are inherited from my brother's collection -- I don't have much past Invasion Block.  My current decks are
White Weenie with Crusade, Armageddon, and Winter Orb
UW Control with FoW, Ivory Tower, some large fliers
Survival, with Squee, Flametongue Kavu, other utility creatures, and some finisher
Academy on a shoestring (combos out by turn 10!)

All of these have been pretty successful, most of all Survival.

Kids like playing me because these decks are "retro" and because I still win 90% of my games with them.  But I'm getting bored, and so are the kids.  I'm looking for decent, old decks that could can be cheaply thrown together and which stand a good chance against aggro and crappy Affinity combos.  Do you have any decks that you wish could still be played?  or that you think today's youngins should know about?

Sui Black? Works better with Sinkholes, but if you don't have those, it's not a killer. Discard, Cheap Black creatures with drawbacks and Rituals - what's not to love?

It sounds to me like your kids are willing to tolerate at least some broken plays. I'm thinking cute interactions are the name of the game. I ended building a lot of stuff like this to play against my casual friends.

Here's a few suggestions:
Traditional Reanimator
Anything built around Recurring Nightmare
Maybe some random tribal decks

Ever since I saw Ertai, the Corrupted, I've wanted to build a deck around him. The big problem I keep running into is that all the everything I build ends up better (which still isn't to say they're good) without him in the list.

The most recent deck from which he'll soon be cut is built around the following:

Reanimation: Recurring Nightmare, Animate Dead, Necromancy

Utility Creatures: Auramancer, Faith Healer

Utility Enchants: Legacy's Allure, Seal of Removal/Doom, Oblivion Ring, Reality Acid, Delaying Shield

Other: Intuition, Stormscape Familiar, Sigil of The Empty Throne

Cute, but dumb: Ertai the Corrupted, Ancestral Knowledge, Hatching Plans

I had a dirt cheap Soldiers+Equipment deck I threw together out of random crap lying around. Basically, it runs cheap soldiers that get better w/ gear, and cheap gear. Here's some stuff I ran, plus newer stuff that would probably fit.

Dudes: Auriok Steelshaper, Auriok Glaivemaster, Kitesail Apprentice, Kor Duelist, Leonin Den Guard
Gear: Bonesplitter, Shuko, Leonin Scimitar, Bonesaw
Pump subtheme if you want: Ballyrush Banneret, Daru Warchief, Aven Brigadier, Veteran Armorsmith, Veteran Swordsmith, Veteran Armorer, Captain of the Watch, Field Marshall, Rhox Pikemaster
Random Other Stuff: Stormfront Riders, Martial Coup, Darien King of Kjeldor, Conqueror's Pledge, Raise the Alarm

I suppose it's mostly the thought that this format is just one big Mistake; and not even a very sophisticated one at that.

You know, I had a Sui Black deck a few years ago, and it worked great.  Maybe it's time to bring that back with some artifact hate.

Always fun to get beaten with your own deck!  Very Happy

That's exactly right, and those are good suggestions.  I'll look into reanimator.

I'm hesitant about any deck focused on equipment, because kids already use these so heavily.  To contrast, I'm looking into some kind of Enchantress.

The first list here is a beatdown Enchantress deck. After that we start tuning a lot more heavily for Vintage, so they probably aren't as applicable.

I can see the hesitancy to use equipment, but do you think they've really abused it? Remember that it's really the creatures that make the deck. The gear really is the crappiest cheapest stuff that came to mind. It's all about stuff like T1 Glaivemaster, T2 Bonesplitter, swing with 4/2 first striker. Also, the Steelshapers allow for lots of silly things like swinging with a huge dude, then redistributing everything for defense.

I won't be offended if you still decide to pass on the idea, just figured it's still probably a different execution than your kiddies are used to. Also, if you're scratch building this stuff, having a price tag of $10-$20 is a big plus. I love Enchantress, but 4xArgothian is already gonna cost more than the entire soldier deck.
