We also used to ban cards once they win, but for this new round I just started, I'll just ban whatever seems too dominant. Lotus is of course banned right from the start to make things more interesting.

Here is how the first tournament went.

Dark Depth is very strong, but 3 people ran Plains instead of the optimal Karakas (no nonbasic hate really in this format), so I don't think it's ban-worthy.

Meanwhile my FoW deck got owned big time and the Daze deck ended up superior. Oddly, not Mercadian counter land this round.

How do we enter?

You get someone to take the inscriptions on here and you start you own god damn tournament like I did Razz

I'm not really considering making mine a cross-forum thing, it will stay on my French forum, but you are welcomed to learn French and come participate

Sure.  The first 15 people to PM me a 3 card decklist before midnight are in a tourney.  The Rack is banned.

Since I have a chance to cheat seeing others' lists, I'll go with the pile that won the last one:
Daze, Trop, Dirkwood Baloth

You might want to make a bigger banned list. The Rack is not that dangerous in a format where 1st turn Trini is common.

This is the one I used.

Unglued/Unhinged
Black Lotus
Blackmail
Cabal Therapy
Ghost Quarter
Maze of Ith
Mishra's Workshop
Strip Mine
The Rack
Wasteland

Honestly, I probably didn't need to ban The Rack.  I just think Mishra's Workshop + 2x Rack is a boring deck that can play through too many of the "clever" piles.  I definitely want Black Lotus in the format because it opens up the possibilities AND makes Chalice@0 an interesting play.

I said it and I'll say it again, Black Lotus CLOSES possibilities. Look at the games on my tournament, look at the variant in mana bases. With Black Lotus in, you will have Black Lotus decks VS Chalice decks VS Mana Decks.

Lotus decks beat Mana decks
Mana decks beat Chalice decks
Chalice decks beat Lotus decks (anyone playing Chalice will have to play Leyline, making this a very narrow deck)

Black Lotus makes all tap lands, counter lands and 2 mana lands pretty much obsolete.

But hey, prove me wrong. Different strokes for different folks.

I'll be watching the results, some matchups can be a REAL pain to count, trust me...

Worse one so far was Woodlot + Channel + Snake Basket against Vineyard, Pendelhaven and Rootwalla (with mana burn)

Must have taken me at least 30 minutes to get the results.

3 out of 15 entries so far, counting my own, we're at a 4 man tourney right now.  I'll bet this jumps after people get home from work, though.

Agreed with this, TBH. The decks enabled by counter lands add a lot, but in a field that includes Lotus, nobody can afford to pass that many turns building mana. Even if their bomb is stronger, they'll get wrecked before they can hope to cast it.

I suppose it's mostly the thought that this format is just one big Mistake; and not even a very sophisticated one at that.

K, total of four decks:

Delha:
Black Lotus
Magus of the Moon
Glowrider

Skadrian:
hollow trees
channel
ulamog, the infinite gyre

Killane:
Mishra's Workshop
Ancient Tomb
Rackling

Me:
Daze
Tropical Island
Dirkwood Baloth

Here's the outcome:

    D S  K A   Total
D X W W T    7
S L  X  W W   7
K L  L  X  W  3
A T  L L  X   1

Please let me know if I made a mistake.  I assumed perfect knowledge of the opposing pile so that who goes first first would have no effect.

Delha and Skadrian tie.

Hopefully we can get a larger tourney next time.  Thoughts on a new ban list?  Try again this weekend?

Probably more work, but FYI, the way we used to count points was like this

Win = 3 points
Tie = 1 point

That gives a possible total of 6 points per game if you win on the play and on the draw. Some decks will only win one of the 2, and some decks will tie (likes decks that have 1 creature and 1 removal), getting 2 points. Some decks also tie one, and win the other, giving them 4 points.

Sounds complicated, but when you get the hang of it, it goes without problem.

I was doing 2 game matches: 0 for a match loss (0-2), 1 for a match tie (1-1), 3 for a match win (2-0).  A corner case I didn't encounter: if one game tied and the other did not, I would have awarded the match win/loss based on the non-tied game.

I'd say let's ban Lotus, as Wagner suggested. There's nothing you can cast with Lotus that can't be cast via counter lands. Also, you may want to just leave it open for a longer chunk of time, maybe 2-3 days.

I'm doing mine every 2 weeks, gives people enough time to think about it a little and present when ready.

I agree with Delha's ban suggestion and Wagner's time suggestion.

Should have mentioned this earlier, but I agree with this method. It sounds like it's basically the same scoring as you'd typically see in the Swiss, but just on a per game basis rather than per match. Since the format is played out round robin, I think this is fitting. This is more of a permutation than a typical tournament, since pairings are no longer dependent on chance.

I beat daze on the play and the draw by waiting one more turn, getting an extra counter on my land and thus being able to pay for daze.
