I am proud to announce N.Y.S.E. XIV, a Stax Exchange Production paid for by viewers like you;

When:

Saturday, April 16th, 2011
Registration will begin at 11:00 AM
First round will begin promptly at 12:00 PM

What:

$25, 15 proxy non-sanctioned Vintage tournament.  Deck registration sheets will be in use.  1st place prize of an Unlimited piece of power is guaranteed.  As soon as I have a line on said piece of power, it will be announced, and the prize structure will be finalized.  All prizes other than first will be guaranteed at a certain number of entrants, probably around 35, though I won't have a definite number on this until I know what the first place prize is, and what it runs me.  This announcement is a near carbon copy of the event for 2/26, which merely evidences issues that I've been having in picking up power lately.  If you have power that you're looking to move, please drop me a line and let me know.  I'm interested...

The prize structure will be as follows:

1st: Unlimited piece of power
2nd: TBA
3rd/4th: TBA
5th/8th: $25 dealer credit
9th:  Mystery Prize, to be autographed by the top 8

As always, prizes will be scaled up with attendance.

A sportsmanship prize of a Scalding Tarn will be awarded to a player of my choice.

Side Events/Player of the Year Race:

Side Events:

There will be a side event that will start taking sign-ups after the second round of the main flight.  As soon as we have 12 players the event will be held.  If there's enough demand for it, there will be an additional side event held after the final round of the main flight as soon as we have the 12th sign-up.  Entry for the side event is $10.  It will be four rounds of single elimination.

Non sanctioned Scars of Mirrodin drafts will be available throughout the day, beginning after the second round of the event.

Player of the Year Race:

Starting on 1/8 there will be a Player of the Year race.  Points will be accumulated based on match wins (3 points) and draws (1 point.)  The event will run from 1/8/11 - 12/31/11.  The winner of the race wins free admission to all N.Y.S.E. tournaments for 2012.  Updates will be posted in the tournament reports for the tournaments.

The point structure will be as follows:

1st: 12 points
2nd: 9 points
3rd: 6 points
4th: 6 points
5th:  3 points
6th:  3 points
7th: 3 points
8th: 3 points

May the best player win!

Our head judge for the event will be Long Island's own Brian Paskoff, a level 2 judge.  Dealer extraordinaire Nick Coss will be on site to take care of all your trading/singles needs.

I'm really looking forward to getting 2011 started off with a bang.  The Grudge Match is going to be great, but I'm really looking forward to seeing all my regulars come out for this event...  So come on over to Long Island, sling some cards with friends, come to the after party, and go home happy...

You'd be surprised how few weekends there actually are that are open between now and the end of April.  Working with the other local area T/O's, and getting the announcements up now is important.

I hope to have the prize support for the event set soon enough.  I'm super reliant upon what's available to me, and it's tough to know what is right now because my traditional sources for power are spent.

Those of us who work suck-ass retail jobs appreciate such advanced notice, believe me! I would request off for this now, but in all honesty I hope I'm long gone from this awful job by then!

I cannot stress this enough.  It is really hard to tell whether we can make it to a tournament when we are given less than ample notice (about 3 weeks needed at my job).  With school and work, it is almost impossible to make plans to go to anything with less than a month's notice.  With 4 months notice, I will be trying to make it to this but, school will most likely be the determining factor for this one as this will be approaching finals time.

I can offically say that this tournament will be 100% better for everyone than last week's NYSE, as I will not be attendance. For once, I need to put family first and that means I must miss this event.

Request off has been submitted. I'll be looking forward to another weekend of Vintage, Tichu, 1600-calorie Lobster Carbonara bombs, and, assuming I'm not too poor, alcohol. Hopefully no gangrape in the parking lot of wherever we go for the afterparty (surprised Coss hasn't posted THAT video), and hopefully no getting scolded by hotel management for drunkenly piling on each other in the elevator.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Regionals Qualifiers for U.S. Nationals has been scheduled for the same date as this event.  Regionals complicates many aspects of potentially running this event the same day - the least of which is crossover in interest, and expected loss of player turnout.  Nick Coss's commitments to Gray Matter (as a dealer), as well as significant interest from many of the players with whom I've spoken has motivated me to postpone this event.

I don't have another date scheduled for the event as things stand.

I will work on a different date, which will hopefully work out better for everyone.  My sincere apologies to those of you who requested off for this date, and to those of you who were looking forward to coming to New York for the event.

More importantly, however, there is this:

I have decided to stop using TheManaDrain.com, both as a venue to post my tournament announcements and as a venue to share ideas on Vintage.  For the time being, I would recommend that everyone who is interested in attending future N.Y.S.E. events check the Facebook group for updates (as things stand, I believe there will be another N.Y.S.E. Lite at the end of the month, and I am considering running a Sunday Depot event for power on the 17th of April as well.)  There will be a major announcement there, hopefully within the next week or two, that will simplify tournament announcements, reports, and more.

Vintage is an excellent format - not just for the cards and the plays, but for the players.  There is a sense of community about Vintage that is lacking in all other formats.  I have worked for years (on TMD and off TMD) to grow the format, and I am not going to stop.  My efforts, if anything, will be increasing in the coming weeks, months, and, hopefully, years.

I am not going anywhere.

I will continue to work to build the format, to draw players, to run events, and to restore Vintage to its former prominence.  I hope that as I work to do this I have many of you by my side.

Thanks.

Yeah that conflict sucks big time.

I see you're planning a smaller event for the Sunday after Regionals. Any chance that could be the main NYSE event, at Grim if Depot doesn't seat enough?

I suppose the bigger question is why don't more TO's run events on Sundays? It's infinitely easier for most retail employees to request a Sunday off as stores aren't open as long and fewer people are needed to work.

Regardless my request is already in (actually it's a vacation starting the weekend of the mini-Waterbury) so if enough people from my crowd want to make the trip to the Depot I'm in.

Continue to grow the format... by not posting your events on the only real vintage website in the US.  Ok.

Oh well then, I will bow before your incredible knowledge of TMD usage statistics.  Also, I couldn't find this group by searching NYSE on FB.  It's probably really easy though, much easier than a website all about vintage with forums that specify Tournament Announcement.

This is probably only an issue for me, but I do not have a Facebook account and I am not planning on making one, so I hope there will be another venue to find out about upcoming events.

That sounds way better than posting them on the website people visit to look for tournaments.  Maybe every TO should just get their own Twitter and Facebook pages, and then I just have to follow a dozen people if I want to play vintage!  That's so easy!

I never said it was better than having one place to look.  I just meant it would be better than not knowing at all.  It would be a stopgap until another permanent was found. Plus, it could be used after for incidental tournament updates.

Those are some good ideas.  If only such a website already existed and was used for that exact purpose!

Just so it's clear, H, I have no problem with you and I'm not trying to give you crap.  Just pointing out how absurd this whole thing is, and how it seems like just one giant ego trip for someone who thinks he is better than TMD.

My stopgap, if I lived in that area?  Stop going to these events.  If he's too good to post them on TMD, then obviously he is too good for me.

Yeah, except Nick could post the event on both facebook and TMD. Honestly it doesnt make much sense to not post it on TMD in addition to wherever else you are posting them.

Nick my man, I'm sorry but nothing good can come out of abandoning TMD, for at least announcing your events. Personality conflicts with other adepts/mods/whoever should not get in the way of simply making tourney announcements.

I would make announcements everywhere it is feasible to do so. This includes Facebook, Twitter, The Source, Star City, Salvation, and hell even Wizards' forums if you want!

Also, I can't be the only one who read "DATE CHANGED" in the subject line and clicked in expecting to find out when the tournament was rescheduled to. Maybe change it to "POSTPONED" until you're able to pick a date?

This seems like a good thread to mention RazorGrass.com, which redirects to a Google Calendar that lists every event that gets posted in Eastern U.S., for those that don't utilize Facebook.

Who would I talk to about getting something tweaked on there? It's got the wrong time down for my event.
