Talk about incredible! We had 90 (yes, 90!) players for the second iteration of the Grudge Match, and I’d like to thank everyone who came to the event. We had guys drive from Boston, Washington D.C., and all over Pennsylvania. While we had a star studded top 8, featuring Vintage greats old and new, only Sam Berse’s Worker Shop stood tall at the end of a grueling day of seven rounds and a top 8.
The Complete Metagame Breakdown:
Mana Drains
Tyrant Oath: 2 Preordain Jace: 6 Gush Jace: 1 Gush Storm: 2 Jace Control: 4 Snake City Vault: 2 Elephant Oath: 5 Keeper: 2 Painter/Grindstone: 1 4C Slaver: 1 Landstill: 1 Peanut Oath: 2 Trygon/Battlesphere Oath: 1 Bomberman: 1 Magus Tezz: 1 Emrakul Oath: 1 TurboVault: 1 Rector/Flash: 1 Land Control: 1 BBS: 1
Workshops
Worker Aggro: 7 MUD Aggro: 1 MUD Prison: 1 Espresso Stax: 8 Two Card Monte: 1 Mono Red Shops: 1 Prototype Portal Shops: 1 (Hey Ray, how are you doing?)
Dark Rituals
TPS: 4 ANT: 2 Bob Tendrils: 2 Belcher: 2
Null Rods
Noble Fish: 6 Dark Times: 2 White Weenie: 1 W/G Weenie: 1 Elves!: 1 G/R Hate: 1 W/B/R Hate: 1
Bazaars
Dredge: 10
The metagame had a ton of bit players, but it essentially boiled down to four strategies: various forms of Oath, Dredge, Worker Aggro and Espresso Stax.

My sincere congratulations to Sam Berse, Dominick Karmiche and all of the top 8 competitors!

9th Place Prize
The 9th place prize was a stack of some (now) awful cards from Revised, all done by Jeff Menges, who was kind enough to sign all of them. Mons Goblin Raider? Check. Merfolk of the Pearl Trident? Check. Raise Dead? Check. Our 9th place prize winner was David Lawrence. Congrats Dave!
Prize Support
Prize support for the event was added to reflect the number of entrants. First place prize remained an Unlimited Black Lotus, but second was bumped to a $350 dealer credit – which was a Mox of your choice (save Sapphire) along with some extra credit thrown your way. Third and fourth were bumped to $200 dealer credit, with 5th-8th becoming $100 credit each. 9th-16th all won $50 credit.
I love nothing more than bumping the prize support for events, and I hope that I have the opportunity to do it again on February 26th at the next N.Y.S.E. event. I should have the support for that event confirmed by the end of the day today, and I am still looking to run it as a double power tournament.
Team Tournament
Team New York handed over its title as reigning Grudge Match champion to Team Pennsylvania yesterday. The final standings:
1st – Team Pennsylvania (Elias, Berse and Hornung): 53 points 2nd - Team New York (R. Forino, Hangley and J. Gans): 33 points 3rd – Team New England (Houdlette, Martin and Robillard): 28 points
And if you want a really telling number, how about this; Sam Berse had more points than Team New England, and was four points away from besting Team New York as well. Metalworker based Shops decks warrant a lot of attention, as hate didn’t seem to bother Sam at all yesterday. Talk about a one man wrecking crew…
Player of the Year Race:
2010 saw Jake Gans narrowly beat out Raffaele Forino for the Player of the Year race. Your trophy (which is a real winner…) is on its way Jake. 2011 brings a new year, new events, and a new race.
The standings after the Grudge Match are such:
Addesa, Jonathan – 15 Aiken, Nate – 6 Anand, Jeff - 22 Balleseter, Lance – 12 Bauer, Michael – 12 Berman, Hal – 9 Berse, Sam - 29 Brady, Andrew – 6 Brady, Brian - 3 Brown, Max – 3 Butker, Josh – 21 Carey, Brian - 20 Close, Andrew – 3 Coombe, Alan – 3 Davis, Jim – 6 DeMarco, Jesse - 6 Dixon, Thomas - 12 Egan, Michael – 13 Eisenhauer, Michael – 3 Elias, Matthew – 12 Farias, Andrew – 15 Fenton, Greg – 12 Folinus, Jeff – 9 Forino, Raffaele – 15 Forino, Vincent – 3 Fortune, Damien - 6 Fulmer, Allen – 12 Gans, Jake – 3 Giuliante, Thomas – 3 Glackin, Ryan – 3 Greene, Jeff - 19 Griffiths, Shawn – 9 Gumina, T.J. – 9 Hangley, James – 15 Hornung, Mark – 15 Houdlette, Steven - 6 Hughes, Scott – 15 Hundertmark, Evan – 3 Imperiale, Jason – 7 Impink, Jack - 6 Ingram, Peter - 9 Jones, Brandon – 15 Jones, John – 15 Jones, Ryan - 6 Jones, Travis – 15 Karmiche, Dominick - 27 Keeton, Andrew – 12 Kohler, J.P. – 15 Konak, Ronald – 6 Lane, Brian - 3 Lapine, Michael - 6 Lawrence, David – 16 Lawrence, Robert – 9 Lessard, John - 1 Leshen, Justin – 6 Levinton, Andrew – 1 Martin, Jesse – 10 Mason, Daniel – 6 Mastriano, Paul – 25 Meckes, Josh - 19 Nowakowski, Steven – 3 Owen, Alex - 9 Parsinitz, Ralph – 12 Pate, Matthew – 10 Philpotts, Terence – 3 Potucek, Josh – 12 Probasco, Andy - 9 Rappa, Ryan – 12 Reilly, Brian – 13 Reitnauer, David – 12 Roberts, Chris – 10 Robillard, Raymond – 12 Rumbel, Carl - 6 Schreiber, Michael - 9 Seals, Keith – 12 Smith, Eric – 9 Trinks, Will - 6 Vibulayacom, Ted – 10 Worsham, Martin - 3 Zivny, Andrew - 8
In Conclusion
My sincere thanks to Nick Coss for providing prize support, dealing, and generally being a true gentleman and a scholar, to Brian Paskoff for exceptional judging, to Dave, Frank and all the Brother’s Grim staff for the excellent location and all the work that they put in to make sure that this event was a success, to Jeff Menges for signing and altering cards, doing playmats, and providing some great stories of the early days of Magic, and to all my players, who came from near and far to play in the Grudge Match – it meant the world to me to see that many people at one of my events. It’s nice to know when you’re doing something right…
That wraps up this N.Y.S.E. event; I hope to see many of you again on February 26th!

A big thank you to Nick and the rest of the crew at Brothers Grim for making this happen.
I know myself and the rest of the New England guys had a great time.
Also, look how fantastic the meta is right now.

Congrats to the Top 8 for a good showing and Nick D. for such a great tournament. I'm hoping the stellar showing and the awesome meta are good signs of a great year of Vintage ahead, although I hope to have more wins in the future. I'm gonna do my best to come out for the February event.

Thanks peeps, it was fun!
Mini report from memory:
Round 1 - Bye
Round 2 - Tom D - Keeper Get there in 2 games with some great draws and tight play. G2 I have double duplicant for his sower on my lodestone and his tinker-> sphinx. Chalice on 2 nullified, at a point, ~3 cards in his hand.
Round 3 - Red Shops Game 1 he stabilizes at one life as I spent way too much time porting his workshop instead of swinging with factory. Game 2/3 - I get the goods and take advantage of his poor draw g2 and inadaquate answers to triple lodestone game 3.
Round 4 - Espresso Stax This match ends in two games. Game 1 he is held back by two spheres (his thorn my sphere) and 2 ancient tombs. He took 8 damage alone from tombs and my lodestone + factory sealed it, despite a tangle wire. Game 2 he gets a pretty bad draw after a mulligan and leads with shop + powder. I strip it and then a couple turns later manage a hellkite.
Round 5 - Fish Game 1 - I think I got there with hellkite. His life went from 15 to 14 to 5 to dead and I think it was hellkite hit killing a mox, and then pumping the crap out of it the following turn; probably worker-powered. Game 2 - He's forced to null rod his own mox power away to deal with my worker. Again, I think hellkite for the win b/c it was 19-18-12-3-2-dead.
Round 6/7 - Draw with the people I will face in top 8 and then top 4.
Top 8: Life totals were kept in my bud's Death Note...so...pure memory here.
Honestly, I didn't think this deck had it in it to beat oath twice. Sure Eon Hub is cute, but I didn't actually play it all day. It definitely would have helped vs. oath, however.
Top 8: Brian - Oath Game 1: I play some spheres/creatures and by the time he casts oath it is FAR too late. Game 2: Bad beats - he mulls to 5 and gets blow out.
Top 4: Paul - Oath Game 1: Creatures come down before oath and he's already pondering his sideboard before I swing for lethal. Game 2: Really, really great game because we each have the stone cold nuts. He gets t1 time walk brainstorm into t2 orchard oath. I do something pretty crazy involving at least a sol ring, lodestone golem, and mishra's workshop, and maybe a chalice on 0 or something. Somewhere along the line he killed my first lodestone, traded tyrant with my second lodestone, and I dropped a third. We wore away at each other, port + double sphere helped me keep him locked down, and he periodically squeaked in something in order to bounce my creatures. At the final turn of the game he cast a mox to bounce my lodestone, but he is at 4, so when I rip a second workshop to cast the Karn he had previously bounced, I animate the two spheres and swing for lethal.
Somewhere in this match I duplicant -> tyrant. I think that was g1.
Finals: Dominick - Fish Game 1: This was really pretty long but then I stuck a memory jar and got +7 permanents out including 3 moxes, a land, a sphere, a Karn, and a chalice. Game 2: We go LD bonkers and by turn 4 there are ~6 lands in the graveyard. I don't hit lands/crucible and he selkie's me to death after removing my blockers with swords and junk. Game 3: I am on the play. T1: Lotus, Chalice on 0, Workshop, Trinisphere, GO. He plays land and passes. T2 Strip Mine + Steel Hellkite = Game Over.
Tournament was a lot of fun! 90 people was a blast, the store was awesome, and the pizza and beverage selection was incredible!
I'll see many of you guys next week in Blue Bell!

This was an amazing tournament. Got Brassman to sign my Vizzerdrix (I loved that story), and I had my best record yet (yeah 2 and 3 sucks, but hey you have to start somewhere). Thanks for an amazing tournament Nick Detweiler, Brothers Grim, and Nick Coss. It's always great to play Magic with the best crowd out there, so thanks a lot everybody. Hope to make the next NYSE, that would be pretty frickin awesome. Here's looking at you guys!

I definitly had a great time at this one. Thanks to Nick D for organizing a great event. I'd also like to thank Steve menendian because i built my list from his Gush Book (and the sections on strategy helped, too) and Keith Seals & Co. for letting me hitch a ride with them. Definitely a good time.

Somewhere in this match I duplicant -> tyrant. I think that was g1. You got me with the Duplicant in Game 2. where you say in the report that you traded Lodestone with a Tyrant what actually happened was you duplicanted my Tyrant, i Oathed up my second Tyrant which turned an Ancient grudge into the yard and I Grudged the Duplicant bouncing karn. Pretty sure I got your first Lodestone with Nature's Claim. All the way through this game you kept me locked under a Rishadan Port which prevented me from being able to cast ANYTHING to be able to bounce your lock pieces with Tyrant. I needed to draw a Mox or something else free to play through Lodestone+Sphere and got it too late. I kept hoping you'd use your port to cast something else but you never did. Well played.

I think you're right about all that.
Yo do your crazy time walk, brainstorm, orchard, oath. I started with lodestone (hit the metalworker later), you oathed up and killed lodestone. I duplicant, you oath up and kill duplicant. I drop a golem. We trade hits and I drop karn to kill mox. You kill golem and bounce karn. I drop another golem and we are back to trading hits. I keep you locked down with a sphere, a port, and maybe a chalice on something. On your 2nd to last turn, when you were at 4 life, I should have attacked with lodestone and forced the trade, but just played thorn and passed. This allowed you to pay 2 mana to cast a mox and bounce the golem and swing me to like 5. However, the karn you bounced earlier came back to animate the spheres and swing for game.
We each had some of the sauciest draws possible game 2, it was great!

It's really not that general because of how variant decks are, and then it changes for the play and the draw. Hub comes in vs. oath and Duplicants for oath and trygon tezz. Crucible can be extra cute in these matches depending on how many colors they are playing. For example, Paul's Oath had 1 Island MD and 1 Forest SB. Thus, shutting a deck like that off red or black can be accomplished quite nicely with a few wastelands. Tabernacle is vs. Dredge, not Oath.

Yes this was a lot of fun. Missing top 8 on breakers at 5-1-1 sucks, but at least I got a hilarious pile of signed revised crap cards.
Haven't played in a major event in awhile, and was really impressed with the meta. Seems pretty varied and interesting/fun. Plus I got to play four gush so how could I complain.

Was the noble fish list actually 62 cards?
Hot damn, that would be the second time in a row the person in second submitted an incorrect deck reg sheet.

I mean, in Europe, 61 cards is rather common. Perhaps we all just got Next Leveled.

If Jake can do well running 62-card Dredge lists with Jace and no Serum Powders anything is possible.
Maybe I need to up my card count to get out of the funk I'm in, hmmm...

Was the noble fish list actually 62 cards?
Hot damn, that would be the second time in a row the person in second submitted an incorrect deck reg sheet.
I triple checked the list. It really is 62 cards. Since I own the deck and typed the decklist, I needed to check this for myself. And I counted 60 cards, three times. It should be 2 Daze, not 3. And it is 1 Flooded Strand, not 2.

Not like the infamous 4 Strip Mine, 1 Wasteland mistype.

I'm regretting turning myself in for having an illegal decklist, getting a game loss, then losing the next round to Dominick 1-2.

We did do deck checks during the event. Including the guy running Rector/Flash - because who runs Rector/Flash with one Flash?
Yeah, that guy did.

Come on, man - Everyone only runs one Flash in that deck because if 4 Flash were legal there's no reason to run Rectors.
