In grand tradition, it's time for this thread again.

Here are the movies released in 2010.  Which ones did you see?  Which were your favorites?

I saw:

The Book of Eli
Alice in Wonderland
Clash of the Titans
Kick-Ass
Iron Man 2
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
The A-Team
Knight and Day
Inception
Salt
The Expendables
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
The American
Machete
The Social Network
Black Swan
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
Tron: Legacy

Always a shorter list than I would have thought.  I'm also hoping to see True Grit and The Tempest, but they're probably going to end up waiting for DVD.  Of those movies I have seen, the best ones were definitely:

1) Black Swan
2) Inception
3) The Social Network
4) Scott Pilgrim
5) The American

The worst movie I saw is definitely Clash of the Titans, which was a horrible mess.

I wondered if someone was gonna start this, or whether I had to do it again Smile

Here's what I saw:

The Book of Eli
Sherlock Holmes
Alice in Wonderland
Hot Tub Time Machine
Clash of the Titans
Why Did I Get Married Too?
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Iron Man 2
Get Him to the Greek
Toy Story 3
Jonah Hex
The Last Airbender
Predators
Inception
The Other Guys
Eat Pray Love
The Town
Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps
The Social Network
Tron: Legacy
True Grit

Still Need to see:

1) Black Swan
2) The American
3) Harry Potter
4) The King's Speech
5) Little Fockers

2010 was a terrible year for film.    Easily the worst in memory.   80% of what I saw sucked.

The best movie I saw in 2010 was either the Social Network or The Other Guys.  Both films were brilliant.  If you see The Other Guys, make sure to see the unrated version.

Here are my top 5 from 2010:

1) The Social Network
2) The Other Guys
3) Toy Story 3
4) Wall Street 2
5) Predators

The Social Network was just brilliant.  I was giddy from start to finish.

The Other Guys is the funniest Will Ferrell film I've ever seen, and that includes Anchorman and Taledega Nights.   It was just hysterical.

Toy Story 3 is typical Toy Story quality.   It's an instant classic.

Wall Street 2 captured key events in our recent history, and is important, although not as great as the first one.  I still enjoyed it.

I struggled to fill my 5th.  I like Inception, but it was overrated.  It was good, but it wasn't Dark Knight good.  It wasn't Avatar good.  It's not a classic, imo.   It was a one and done film for me.   I was really dissapointed with Get Me To the Greek, which had so much potential to be funny, but wasn't.

The worst movie I saw was easily Jonah Hex.

Pirated just about every major release this year.

The only 3 movies that stuck out as good were the town, predators, and love&other drugs which I thought was great.  My only beef with Predators was that they cast a Brazilian actress to portray an IDF agent when she had neither an Israeli accent or an Israeli look.  My guess there is that she probably fucked Robert Rodriguez to get the part since that's what he's all about now with his actresses.

Wall street 2 was somewhat of a disappointment, I feel like they could have given Gordon Gecko so much more to do in it.

The rest of the years movies were just a sort of decent way to pass an hour and 50 minutes while playing World of Warcraft.

Not sure how good black swan really was, as I just skipped to the part where Mila Kunis munches Natalie Portman's box.

I saw:
Book of Eli (kinda)
Sherlock Holmes
Valentine's Day
Alice In Wonderland
How to Train Your Dragon
Kick-Ass
Babies
Iron Man 2
The Karate Kid (kinda)
Toy Story 3
The Last Airbender
Inception
The Expendables (kinda)
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

I really enjoyed:
How to Train Your Dragon
Toy Story 3
Despicable Me
Inception

I absolutely despised
The Last Airbender

Looked like a good year for animated movies, at least from my perspective. Still got quite a few that I should check out. Black Swan and The King's Speech, for a start.

My favorite movie of the year, not even close, was Kick-ass.

1 Kick-ass
2. Hot tub time Machine
3. Sherlock Holmes
4. Inception
5. Harry potter 7

Other than Kick-ass, the rest of the movies are far from top notch.  I enjoyed Robert Downy Jr. portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, thought Hot tub Time Machine was a lot better than expected, enjoyed the off-the-wall concept of Iception and Harry Potter was a passable rendition of an excellent book.

Other than the movies on the previous top five lists, everything else was mediocre at best.  Coming up with five 'good' movies this year is difficult.  The only movie not previously mentioned that stuck out in my mind was Due Date.  I could pick four random movies out of a hat to fill out my two through five.

I'm not surprised you feel this way.  You managed to see what were easily the two worst movies of the year in The Last Airbender and Jonah Hex.  See Black Swan if you get a chance though, I cannot recommend it strongly enough.

Black Swan and The King's Speech, for a start.
I completely forgot  when I wrote my post, but I really need to check out The King's Speech too.  I've heard nothing but good things.

Also, I don't know why Sherlock Holmes was on this list.  It was a Christmas Day release in 2009.

Clash of the Titans
Iron Man 2
The A-Team
Predators
Inception
Harry Potter VIIa
The Town

Would recommend:
Inception
The Town

Not a good year for film in my opinion.  On a more positive note, I read about 25 sci-fi books during 2010, as part of a personal project to read every Nebula award winning novel.

The Other Guys?  Did you watch the same movie I watched?  That movie was one of the worst movies I saw this year.  It was barely better than Land of the Lost; the best part is the first five minutes with The Rock and Samuel L.  After that, all down hill. Just awful.  Terrible.  I laughed more at MacGruber.

Probably the worst major studio film I've ever seen was released in 2010:  Sex and the City 2.  Even ignoring my hatred of everything related to that series about elderly trollops whoring their way through their middle years, this movie was a train wreck on every possible level.  The corpse of Helen Keller could have done a better job directing and filming.

Sherlock Holmes was ok, but somewhat disappointing as well.  My expectations were very high.

I didn't see social network but I have high expectations.

Anyway, two of my favorite directors / directing teams made movies this year that I haven't seen yet, in True Grit and Black Swan.  I'm sure I will love both.

Toy Story 3 was really good.  Inception was freaking fantastic!  I saw it twice in the theater.  I really enjoyed Despicable Me.  Kick Ass was good.  Scott Pilgrim was really enjoyable.

This was a pretty weak year for cinema, looking back at it.

Movies I watched:
-The funniest part in The Other Guys was: "..aim for the bushes"..it was downhill after that.
-Predators' ending was anti-climatic. The rest of the film was entertaining and interesting.
-Leap Year.
-No Greater Love. Great for couples, unlike: Why did I get Married Too?..
-Why Did I Get Married Too? ..I hated the ending, nothing was resolved and the wrong person dies!! imho.
-Easy A, funny.
-Dinner for Schmucks, really funny! Though I have not seen the original French film, "Le Diner de Cons".
-Date Night, Also funny!
-Clash of The Titans, best part was.."RELEASE THE KRAKEN!!"..just to watch it die five seconds later..  I heard the original was bad, but that this was worse.
-The Expendables. Nothing special but very entertaining. I would say watch it for the weapons they use in the movie, if thats your thing... and EXPLOSIONS!! That seems to work if all else fails. Just ask Michael Bay   Wink
-Toy Story3. Instant classic.
-Iron Man2. What a dissapointment.
-Sherlock Holmes. total dissapointment
-Shutter Island. a psychological thriller worth seeing for the fine acting, good script, and excellent movie style.
-Salt, nothing new here but still a good movie.
-Knight and Day, Tom Cruise. 'Nuff said.
-Hot-tub Time machine. no comment
-Cop Out ..outrageously funny!!
-She's out of My League
-The Bounty Hunter
-Letters to God
-The Loosers, cool movie!
-Just Wright.
-Sex and The City2
-Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky
-Grown Ups.
-Going the Distance.
-Tron:Legacy. Awesome!
-Inception.  Great action scenes. Joseph Gordon-Levitt was great. This movie was not only visually amazing, but intellectually satisfying and plot driven. I WILL be seeing it again; highly recommended. The only thing that tops this is..The Matrix, while eating a Klondike Bar

Inception and Shutter Island tie for the best of all the movies I got to see in 2010. Tron: Legacy, a close second.

Also, if you liked The Expendables and you're into behind the scenes and all that technical stuff, check out Infero: The Making of The Expendables.. take a ride with Sly and see the story unfold through his eyes.

Has anyone seen fewer movies from 2010 than me? From that entire list I saw:
Sherlock Holmes*
Get Him to the Greek
Inception
Robin Hood

*Sherlock Holmes was actually a 2009 movie (I saw on Christmas 2009, when it was released).

Get Him to the Greek was free with prerelease movie screening passes, so I actually paid to see 2 movies in 2010. Robin Hood was the best of the 3 movies I saw in 2010. The only movie I was interested in seeing but didn't was Green Zone. I cannot remember and more uninspiring year of movies.

I enjoyed Kick-Ass and Scott Pilgrim, all kinds of awesome. Other than those, the year was pretty forgettable. I think Sherlock Holmes was released here in New Zealand in 2010, and I enjoyed it, but the movie has a huge flaw that kills the storyline completely (admittedly, the reasoning behind the flaw is obscure).

Almost Heroes..all time favorite! Just recently I have been going back and watching comedies like Hot Shots part Deux, Robin Hood: men in tights, Young Frankenstein, and the rest of Gene Wilder& Richard Pryor movies, Airplane! and Dracula: dead and loving it. Going back and watching Almost Heroes started it all over again for me  Very Happy
I hope 2011 brings us some clever comedies..like we used to have.

Toy Story 3
Inception
Agora (probably the best though)
Scott Pilgrim
Social Network

I saw:

Shutter Island
Alice in Wonderland
Iron Man 2
Toy Story 3
Inception
Machete
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: Part 1
Black Swan
Tron: Legacy
True Grit

Top 5:

1. Black Swan
2. True Grit
3. Toy Story 3
4. Inception
5. Shutter Island

Honorable mention to Machete, which was really sweet until the last 15 minutes or so when the somewhat over-the-top comedic violence escalated too far into being just plain silly.

Kudos to Daft Punk for composing an absolutely awesome film score for Tron: Legacy, and shame on Disney for not redirecting one tenth of their CGI budget toward saving the storyboard.

The last comedy I saw which was legitimately funny and not just a cheap way to make a buck was The Hangover.  I was not impressed by anything this year. Sad

There were a few good movies this year.  Inception was tremendously good and I enjoyed that movie very much.  Some of the other movies this year were alright too, but I would be really embarrassed to put any of them on a "best of" list.  I'd rather just look at 2010 as the year we screwed up in film making so we could learn from our mistakes and make 2011 a good year for movies.  Hopefully.

What, you didn't like Avatar?

Most of the people on the mana drain put Avatar in their top 5 last year: http://www.themanadrain.com/index.php?topic=39587.0

It only grossed more than any other movie ever, and earned an 83% on the tomato meter, a critic aggregator, which means the reviews were very positive.   Talledega Nights was hilarious, poking fun at nascar culture.   It was also Sacha Boran Cohen's breakout film.

I hated Avatar.  The visual effects were nice, but it pushes movies further in the wrong direction.  The storyline was very unoriginal and trite.  The characters were all uncompelling, and many of their arcs just didn't make sense.  Not to mention goofball names like unobtainium and Na'vi.  I have higher hopes for the sequals.  Hopefully, Cameron will be over just showing off his special effects and put some actual effort into the script.

Unobtanium was not made up for the movie. The name has a good sci-fi pedigree extending back to Asimov for any made-up substance of absurd rarity and properties. What's wrong with Na'vi? The language was well realized and sounded appropriately tribal.

As far as "the wrong direction", film is a visual medium, even moreso than television, and Avatar was the most spectacular use of the medium in this aspect that I've ever seen. Yes a strong plotline was lacking, but if that's really #1 on your list, you'd be better off reading a book or watching a good TV drama with the time you would spend on the movie.

Back on topic:

Despicable Me was AWESOME. I loved it, my kids (11 and 4) loved it and it appealed to each of us on a different level. Very well constructed and sentimental without being sappy.

Yet to see Black Swan. Clearly this has been an oversight. Ditto with the Social Network.

I liked Iron Man 2. It was fun. Nothign special, but a good visual piece of work, and good escapism.

Harry Potter was... Harry Potter. I love these movies. The begining, with Hermione erasing herself form her parent's lives, was one of the most emotional moments I've seen this side of a holocaust story. If you have kids and you actually think about what's going on, it's heart-wrenching.

Scott Pilgrim was fun. Get him to the Greek was more fun.

I think that may have been the full list this year. Too busy to see many films, watched alot of oldies but goodies on Netflix instead.

Oh, and The West Wing on DVD. I own the whole series. Fucking AAA+ best show in the history of television and much better watching than 99% of all movies. There's a plot-driven piece for you Troy- just don't expect to have much free viewing time for a month or so becuase you will not be able to stop watching it.

Saw Scott Pilgrim a few nights ago and really liked it.  I'm going to watch Social Network tonight.  I have high expectations, if not for any other reason than all that I've read in this thread.

I saw Social Network last night.  It was... good.  Having said that, I don't think its "film of the year"-type material nor do I think its even in Fincher's top 3.  The score was excellent though.

Avatar was a unique film experience.  I saw it in the theater, glad I saw it in imax 3D, and haven't seen it since.  It's a great experience, but not really a great movie.  I mean, its Fern Gully with guns, am I right?  Pocahontas III:  Shit just got real?

Well The Social Network largely swept the Globes.  Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Drama, and Best Score.  Colin Firth got Best Actor in a Drama for The King's Speech, Natalie Portman got Best Actress in a Drama for Black Swan.  I can't really argue too much with any of these.  I haven't seen The King's Speech yet, but I've heard nothing but great things about Firth's performance.  Certainly Natalie Portman earned her award, and The Social Network is unquestionably one of the best of the year.  I feel like enough of the top contenders for "Best of 2010" are of such high quality and are close enough to each other that I can't say any are undeserving, a nice change from many previous years.
