I consider myself an amateur TV critic and I had this discussion with friends recently about what the best show(s) on television that are currently in production are. I realize this is a subjective matter, but I'd be curious to see people's favorite shows and why they like them.

Here are the shows I look forward to watching the most:

1). Dr. Who
2). Damages
3). The Good Wife
4). The Closer
5). Community

I will say, I do think HBO is doing amazing TV shows, but it is not in the budget.

on the Sci-Fi front, Torchwood: Miracle Day and Alphas are pretty decent, with Falling Skies a distant third.

Breaking Bad
This wins my overall category running away.  Though I don't watch any of the HBO stuff, Game of Thrones (which I've heard good things about).  I may sign up for HBO if an American Gods series actually materializes.

Dr. Who and Community are fun, but they aren't serious contenders for best-show-on-tv in my opinion.  Eureka has taken a down-turn I feel, because everything they do at this point feels like a retread or rehash. Falling Skies hasn't panned out, though I blame the writing, not the cast.  The pace is just plodding, and both the humans and aliens use incomprehensible tactics (walking, in a column, on a street within view of an alien mothership?  Really?).

I thought Law and Order: LA was a fine reboot to the series, and it felt fresh enough for me.  They even **SPOILERS** had the gall to kill off one of the leads and have Molina 'quit' to become a detective again, though they then aired previously shot episodes where Winters was still alive?  Maybe the death was the result of a real-life contract dispute, I don't know. **END SPOILERS**.

Vintage is a lovely format, it's too bad so few people can play because the supply of power is so small.

Chess really changed when they decided to stop making Queens and Bishops.  I'm just glad I got my copies before the prices went crazy.

Modern Family.  Very funny in a very smart way, much like Arrested Development.

Game of Thrones is ridiculously good and I would recommend it to anyone (older than 16 probably).

Comedies:
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Sunny
Daily Show
Entourage

I think Game of Thrones is the only non-comedy that I've watched on a regular basis lately.

I love Fringe.  That may be my favorite show at the moment.  I also really like Mad Men.

But, I also think these are spectacular:

Modern Family (my favorite comedy since Arrested Development)
The Walking Dead
Game of Thrones
The Killing
Curb your Enthusiasm
Bored to Death (<- criminally underrated show IMO)

As far as shows I just enjoy... Conan, Chopped, Daily Show / Colbert Report.

Thought I should contribute my own list:
1. Breaking Bad: I really enjoy this program. It's a fantastic blend of great acting, writing and direction. It's killing me that AMC apparently wants to cut back on their budget for next season down to only 6 episodes.
2. Mad Men: Pretty close to Breaking Bad, I love the depth they manage to provide for supporting characters. Don is the main character, but they really take the time to explore the people around him in depth.
3. Game of Thrones: The opening episode for this series was a tough one, there is definitely an intimidating amount of information that gets dropped on you, but once you get your head around who is who it's a really enjoyable show. I made Rich promise to watch at least 2 episodes before giving up on it, I think he is glad he gave it the additional time.
4. Curb Your Enthusiasm: I think that the story lines can get a bit formulaic. Larry commits minor faux pas, somebody calls him out on it, Larry escalates the situation, hilarity ensues. This also happens where Larry is the one calling somebody else out. That said, I enjoy the fact that it's a comedy that manages to work with hour long/season long story arcs that is really rare to see. In retrospect, I think it's actually better than Seinfeld.
5. Dexter: The only thing negative I could say about Dexter is that I think it has a weak supporting cast after Michael C. Hall. The worst example is Deb, she seems to be constantly pissed off at everybody and everything over nothing. Maybe the actress is hamstrung by the way the character is written, but it's still disappointing.

Honorable Mentions: The Walking Dead, The Life and Times of Tim (chances are you have never heard of this show, it's awesome, please watch it), Fringe, Pawn Stars, BBC Sherlock Holmes and Modern Family.
