N.Y.S.E. XVII is in the books.  And while the turnout was mighty low, this may have been the most fun that I’ve had at a Vintage event.  My sincere thanks to those of you who came out to play at Grim yesterday – I will never forget that Vintage is a community first…

The Complete Metagame Breakdown:

Mana Drains:

NEPAStorm: 1
Cobra Gush: 1
Minus Six: 3
East Coast Wins: 1
U/R Kiki Jiki: 1
Jace/Gush: 1

Workshops:

MUD Marinara: 3
Hellkite Aggro: 1
Phyrexian Shops: 1
Cat Stax: 1

Bazaars:

Dredge: 1

Rituals:

Bob Storm: 1
TPS: 1

We had 14 players for a Beta Jet before we polled those who played to see if the crowd had problems with the T/O, Judge and Dealer all playing in the event.  It was necessary to push us to five rounds and to help cushion the loss from yesterday’s event.  None in the crowd objected, so Paskoff, Coss and I played in the event.

Top Eight Pairings and Results:

Mike Hajduk vs. Nick Detwiler – Hajduk wins
James Hangley vs. Ryan Glackin – Hangley wins
Nick Coss vs. Dave Gans – Coss wins
Tom Dixon vs. JP Kohler – Dixon wins

Top Four Pairings and Results:

Nick Coss vs. James Hangley – Coss wins
Mike Hajduk vs. Tom Dixon – Hajduk wins

Finals:

Nick Coss vs. Mike Hajduk – Coss wins

Congratulations to Nick Coss, Mike Hajduk and all my (other) top eight competitors!

Player of the Year Race:

The Player of the Year Race standings will be updated later tonight, along with something new…

In Conclusion:

My sincere thanks to those of you who came out to play Vintage yesterday.  I had a great time yesterday and I hope you guys did too.  Thanks to Brian Paskoff, Nick Coss and all the Brothers Grim staff – Frank, Gil, Dave et al.

N.Y.S.E. XVIII is tentatively scheduled for 10/29 with first place prize of an Unlimited Time Walk.  More information on that will be posted in the next few days.  I hope to see you there!

Great event Nick, despite the low turnout.  Hope to see you guys at the next one - this was one of the most fun events I have attended in a long time.

Great tourney report. It was worth the $3 that it cost to read it. Oh wait.

Congrats to Nick and the rest of the top 8. I had a blast at this one.

Congratulations, Nick! It's awesome to see Dragon and Minus Six doing well.

Also, Nick, thanks for writing this up. This looks like a really awesome event.

Minor correction to my decklist: I only ran 3 Phyrexian Revokers, to keep the deck at 60 cards.

And now, more proof that life isn't fair. Let's take a look at our top 4:

Mike: I beat 2-1 in the Swiss.
Tom: I beat 2-1 in the Swiss.
Nick: Officially ID'd with, but beat 2-1 in the games we played for fun and practice.
Jimmy: Dream-crushes me in Top 8, obv.

All things considered though this is probably about the most fun I've had at an NYSE in a good long time. Due to the low turnout the tournament ran nice and smooth and was ultra laid-back. For instance, I was definitely more than ten minutes late to round 3. I was stuck waiting for my most-excellent burrito at the Mexican place next door.

Finally, since you asked, Mike Egan:

Plus, the tournament wrapped up in enough time to get in some go-kart racing at the track down the street, and then have an awesome dinner at the Port Royal Grille over in Islip. The 8 pounds of seafood that make up the "Davy Jones Challenge" may be an awful lot for one person, but our fearsome foursome of me, Allen, Paskoff, and Coss polished it off with ease. And I would definitely like to go back again, this time to try what J.P. had, a giant hamburger with all the fixins and grilled cheese sandwiches as the buns!

At first I read that "beat Nick 2-1 in games we played for fun" and I thought "but I didn't play Glackin at all on Saturday."

Then I realized that there are too many Nick's in Vintage.

Sigh.

For those of you who did make it out to this tournament, you really missed out. Just so you know, the Beta Jet was actually the secondary prize. The real prize was the hand drawn painting that was drawn by 8yr old Hannah, which obv I won. It was autographed by the top 8, with your non dominant hand, tamahawk style. Yeah it's pretty sick. Pictures should be coming soon. Or you are more than welcome to come check it out hanging on my refrigerator.

Only problem is you are not aloud within 500ft of an elementary school without being escorted by a police officer.

Also our fearless TO dreamcrushed an 8 year old by ripping up her paper airplane.
