Can you hear it?
That’s the sound of a Grudge Match coming your way…
When:Saturday, May 5th, 2012
Registration begins at 11a.m.
Players meeting begins at 11:55 a.m. PROMPT! Players who are late to the event will be subject to a round one loss. This will be strictly enforced, so please BE HERE ON TIME!
Where:Brothers Grim
1244 Middle Country Road
Selden, New York
11784
(631) 698-2805
What:$30, 10 proxy, non-sanctioned Vintage tournament. Deck registration sheets will be used. Up to an additional five proxies can be purchased for $1 each for those who have not yet reached level one of the NEV Rankings.
Proxies are made by taking a card with similar characteristics and acetone-ing out the incorrect information for the desired card, or by taking a basic land with a lot of white space that can then be written on in black Sharpie with all the important information.
There will be feature matches and there will hopefully be online streaming, so take pride in your proxies! They should be legible (no pen or pencil proxies) and legal (no print outs glued to a card or stuck in a sleeve – they make the card thicker, and thus ‘marked’). We’ve all seen or used bad proxies at one point in time, let’s please put that to rest!
The prize structure will be as follows:
1st – Unlimited Black Lotus + 24 NEV Points!
2nd – Unlimited Mox Pearl + 12 NEV Points!
3rd/4th - $120 dealer credit + 8 NEV Points!
5th-8th - $60 dealer credit + 6 NEV Points!
9th – Mystery prize. I promise it’ll be Cinco de Mayo themed and extra terribad.
9th-16th – 4 NEV Points!
17th and beyond – 2 NEV Points!
Byes:If you won a major Vintage tournament since the last Grudge Match, you’ve won a bye to this event. Major events count as events with more than 32 players.
Shawn Griffiths - Grudge Match IV
Josh Potucek – Council Open #2
Scott Hughes – N.Y. NEV III
Chris Pikula – March Topdeck Games NEV
The winner from the 4/14 NEV event at Topdeck Games will, in all likelihood, receive a bye as well. If I’m missing you, please shoot me a PM and I’ll add you to the list so long as your event meets the qualifications (32+ players).
NEV Series:This event is a part of the NEV Series, brought to you by Nick Coss, Top Deck Games, me (Nick Detwiler), and Brother's Grim! Players who play Vintage at NEV Series events have the chance to qualify for the FREE NEV Championship at the end of the year, where over $5,000 in prizes are being given out, including 8 of the Power 9 (the good 8, don't worry). Players also qualify for Player's Club levels that give them benefits throughout the year! If you’d like more information on the series, go here:
http://www.themanadrain.com/index.php?topic=43560.0Team Competition:As always, this event will be team-based. However, there are a few changes in store, which I hope you are as excited about as I am. As always, there will be three teams representing the three regions (For those of you not in the know, they are New York, Philadelphia, and New England). Three man teams will be voted upon by members of the region they belong to. Pages have been set up in the General Community forum for players of given regions to vote on team members!
In Grudge Matches past, only the people representing regions got to play as a team. WELL NO MORE! Now, if you aren't representing a region, you can still sign up your very own three man team. To sign up a team, all you need is a team name and $10!
While the "ringers" of each region are competing for Vintage fame and glory, you can win extra prizes for denying them that satisfaction! If you are part of a non-region team and you beat a "ringer" during the Swiss, you get a Booster Pack, in addition to the satisfaction that comes from knowing that you just beat one of the best our regions have to offer. The team that wins the Grudge Match gets their names engraved on the Grudge Match Trophy and gets to have it displayed at a store of the team's choice until the next Grudge Match. Think of this as our Stanley Cup. For the team that wins the overall team competition, each player will win a trophy and $10 dealer credit!
Side Events:$10 per person.
Prizes are: 1st: $60 in table credit, 2nd: $20 in table credit.
Vintage side events will kick off as soon as we have 8 players!
Dealers:Nick Coss, dealer extraordinaire, is going to be the dealer for this event, though additional singles will be available with Brothers Grim. Nick has an awesome stock of all the Vintage staples that you could need, so you should stop on by and play with a few less proxies…
Conclusion:The last New York Grudge Match had 90 players. Getting 90 players seems pretty unreal, but I think we can beat that. Prizes always scale up with additional entrants and I’d love to have to scale the prizes up for this event because of a great turnout.
Take the day off from work, meet up with some friends, take a drive to New York and come battle Vintage. It’s going to be an awesome day and I hope you’re all as excited as I am!
