Heard this didn't happen, and that not even second place got anything at 18 entrants.  Glad I opted out, this is not a mannerism I'd support.

I think this did end up happening. At least for the playing mat.

So it was, as I stated, winner take all, but with a prize split since first place didn't need the invite?  Thank you for confirming my take on this event.

That prize support seem absymal.

The playmat that was given away was a hand drawn playmat by one of the most iconic artists in the history of the game.

Mark paid more than $300 for the mat that was done.  Ed did incredible work, and spent countless hours doing mats.  I've seen mats of that caliber sell for more than $300.  Ed had two other mats that he had done; one was priced at $300, the second was priced at $500.

Let's have fun with math:

16x20 = $320

So, Mark took in $320.

The prize support:

N.Y.S.E. Open Entry= $100
Ed Beard Playmat = $300

So, Mark didn't pay for the employees, the basics (like electricity, which I hear players like), and took a loss of $80 on the event.

Not only is Mark not being thanked by the community for this, but he's being attacked by members of the community.

I don't know what people expect, but T/O's aren't charitable enterprises.  Stores don't exist so that you have a place to play.  Stores exist to do business, and one of the side benefits is that you have a place to play.  Mark could have run another tournament for another format, but he chose to run a Vintage tournament and he chose to keep the same prize support.

Frankly, anyone who feels so entitled that the T/O shouldn't make any money on an event, or that a store owes them a place to play (or anything at all) is due for a rude awakening.

Mark did not follow the explicit prize payout credentials of your opening post.  As written, the payout should have been playmat + invite + $15, and wasn't.  If he didn't want to take a loss than a loss shouldn't have been advertised.  This is a matter of integrity, one that could have been solved by a few booster packs.

I understand your point.

We're upset about what, four packs?

I don't think that we're going to have to worry about questioning Mark's integrity with Vintage events like this again, as I don't believe he's going to run a Vintage event for the next one.  Why would he, when he could run Standard, Modern, Limited, 2HG or Commander, and have a better turnout with some profit margin?

These are the things that chase T/O's from this format.  Players are under no obligation to support their T/O's, but those same players better not wonder why there are no Vintage T/O's after they've chased them away.

And in order to stop this from becoming more than it is, I have locked this thread.
