For those that are going, there are still a bunch of Vintage events.  Some for Uncut sheets of Antiquities and some that qualify for even larger tournaments.

I know I won't miss the Anniversary tournament qualifier at 1200 on Friday.

They are also having Modern Masters sealed events as well as Modern Champs, if you are into that kind of thing.

See y'all in 3 months.

Is there any overview of how to qualify for that 80-booster tournament ? I found only one Vintage qualifier so far, but I guess it will be more... the website of pastimes seems to have no links whatsoever...

In Events, search for "20th" under description and all the qualifiers plus the main event should come up. I don't have it up right now, but IIRC the qualifier breakdown was something like:

1 Vintage
1 Legacy
1 Modern
2 Standard
1 M14 Sealed
1 "Special Sealed"
1 "Draft Spectacular" or something like that.

There are 8 qualifying tournaments in 7 different formats.

M14 Sealed - 2pm Thursday
Standard - 8pm Thursday
Vintage - 12pm Friday
Special Limited - 1pm Friday
Modern - 5pm Friday
Draft - 10am Saturday
Legacy - 3pm Saturday
Standard - 7pm Saturday

There is also a Gen Con Championship with similar qualifying events.  The winner of that gets a prize package for Gen Con 2014 (usually VIG, hotel, maybe travel plus other stuff)

In addition there are Vintage and Legacy tourneys for uncut sheets, Commander's arsenals and other such stuff.

If you follow me on twitter, you'll see that Helene responded to my question today, and said that the Vintage Champs will be in the USA.

Have the champs always been in USA? Would it be a bad or a good thing if they mixed it up and played it in different continents every now and then?

btw. What is your twitter handle?

They are based on the US despite it being a world wide game. Champs has always been in the US. I'm not sure how I'd feel if it was not.

Do the Europeans travel to Vintage Champs? Is there/has there been any tournaments where people around the world gather to play Vintage?

And sorry about "noob" questions, I am new to the whole Vintage format and community.

Europeans(and other areas) do travel to Vintage Champs and there are Americans(and other areas) that travel to the Bazaar of Moxen in Europe. Those are the 2 largest events, at least prestige wise, that are held. Prospero is working on adding another event Stateside that could grow into something comparable.

It's not a noob question, it's a legitimate one. Don't worry about asking questions.

If I'm not mistaken, a German player traveled to Indianapolis and won last year, and a Japanese player won about five years back.

Yes, a few Euros travel to the USA for the Vintage and Legacy Champs. Mark Lanigra from Germany won last year (http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/eventcoverage/gencon12/welcome#7), Hiromichi Itou won in 2009 (http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/feature/53b), and Davide Cohen from Italy T8'd 2006 (http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Events.aspx?x=mtgevent/vintage06/welcome).

A handful of people from North America fly over to France for Bazaar of Moxen as well.

Found another key piece to all them elves.  Hope to give it a new home soon.

Work took all my writing time this week.  I hope to be back at full steam next week with an interview, article and something new.

If I'm not mistaken, a German player traveled to Indianapolis and won last year...

*cough*

I must admit, you have the tradition thing going for you, as the very first championships were held in the US, and that is where the game origins. But as with the regular MTG Worlds, it seemed a lot "fairer" to me, if once in a while the Vintage World Champs could be hosted in Europe and Asia. I think the major part of the eternal players can't afford the trip (be it a shortage of money or time) just to play in a tournament that usually has around 200 players. It is a great loss I think to have some of the best Vintage players around the world not compete in that event at all. But that may be just my view from over here =)

Especially with this year's Championship not being at GenCon (a somewhat fixed date which we non-Americans could easily plan with) I fear that even less players from outside America can make the trip. I will be looking forward to the final announcement, and I hope it will be sometime I can travel...

@ Topic: I think I'll still be at Gencon, as the prizes are not too shabby and I already booked the trip - and I also hope for some Vintage action anyways!

P.S.: Why do you always spell me with a K ? =(

Not to interrupt the thread, but since your bringing up your wonderful collection of elves:  nothing will throw my game off more at NYSE than droolilng over a bunch of elf originals.  Very Happy

Just sayin'.

Sorry, that was meant for the art forum.  I will display all them elves some day, but not at NYSE, so I expect you at your best.

As far as Gen Con goes, the qualifier tournament should be a good one.  There are others that offer Commander's arsenals as the prize, but they pale in comparison.

I would suggest trying out some of the other formats.  I might try to get a Legacy deck together for the other qualifier.  Maybe all them elves will get to see some use.

Is there possibly a silver lining to all this?

Cons:
Wizards didn't give Vintage players enough notice to make correct arrangements  to get to Gen Con or Worlds, whichever players chose. This shows a great lack of consideration for Vintage players.

For those of us that were hoping for high level of deck design and skill at Gen Con, this is going to be decreased as some players have already said that they are going to Gen Con/not worlds or vice versa. (I always hope to see Smmemen, Paul Mastriano, and Rich Shay at the top tables. Smmemen already said nay Gen Con)

Pro?
Wizards is giving Vintage players two high profile sanctioned Vintage events in the United States??!!?

Well, I am officially locked in for Gen Con.  Going to playing in the Thursday Sealed, Friday Vintage and Saturday Legacy to get as many chances as possible at the 20th anniversary draft.

Also plan on doing something special for the Charity Auction.  Could turn out to be really cool for all involved.

The prize payout for the eternal events this year is actually much better than the prior years; the prestige of the title 'Vintage World Champion' takes some luster off the event. I go to Gencon every year regardless and I think the event spread is awesome; I'm booked for all the eternal qualifiers for the beta->dragon's maze super draft.

Hope to see a strong vintage showing; and I think Gencon will be a good prep for Eternal Weekend.

It's a good chance to stretch the post M14 rules as well - maybe I can actually get somewhere with dark Hate Bears now that my Kataki can't be metamorphed by his evil phyrexian clone.

I got Wednesday off to get the full Gen Con experience.

I'll be hanging around the beer garden and then Card game hall once things open up.  Should be an amazing time.

If you haven't heard about them, I am working with a bunch of artists like John Avon, Wayne Reynolds and Anthony Waters to offer customer playmats at the Gen Con Charity Auction.  The Charity Auction starts at 7PM on Saturday and I hope to see some great action on these playmats.

I'll be in Wednesday night. It's actually a little bit of a relief to be able to enjoy Gencon without the worry of sinking 2 days into Vintage and Legacy Champs. The 80 booster dawn of magic insanity tourney is a better prize than some Italian Legends boosters anyway.

Moving champs out of Gencon is a good move, Gencon has a ~$300 barrier to entry -- or more depending on the squalor you are willing to reside in. The hotels which sell out in ~10-20 minutes are always a pain in the ass to procure. Eternal Weekend is a great idea, it's a dedicated event weekend and will allow many more people to attend.

Will The Cartity Auction only be on site or is it possible to place bids online?

Sadly it is only on site and no online bids.

If you do have a friend going you can always have them bid and pay for you and then pay them back.

So, GenCon is moving closer... who will be heading out to Indianapolis this year? Looking forward to some nice games even outside of the few Vintage tournaments - just let me know if someone is interested - I'll be there the whole week!

For all those that are going to Gen con next week and will be there Wednesday, there will be an event hosted by GatheringMagic.com at Kilroys Tavern in downtown indy.

Eric Klug will be foing custom tokens and there is talk of free food and drinks.

It starts at 8 and runs to 2 and shoild be a good time for testing with a drink or two.

I'll be there, just like every year.  I hope to track down a piece of power or two at a decent price and maybe play some vintage.  I am a complete vintage newbie, so I probably won't play in any tournaments, just for fun.

I'll probably loiter around the vintage events to meet people and find casual games.

She isn't in her booth a ton but she is at the con. Be vigilant ... your Hurkyls and Stormbinds and ... uh ... Whiteouts need inking.

I'm psyched, I almost want to start driving up there now. I will win that uncut sheet, and I will wear it as a cape for the remainder of the con Wink

Anybody have any recomendations on how to get a few pick up games of Vintage in at GC? I am just starting and don't feel ready for a tournament yet. I just want to get some games under my belt.

There's a slew of Team Serious members going to GenCon that'd be willing to do some gun slinging. Just look for Vintage ballers wearing stuff from this site Team Serious Uniforms
