This is just the preliminary listing, but it is definitely concerning. They are typically added as a block with all WotC events. That they have all the other tournaments listed but no Vintage/Legacy Champs is quite atypical.

I'll make some calls to Pastimes (who ran it last year) and elsewhere to see what I can find. I wouldn't be too concerned yet, as this is not close to the final events listing. We'll know more later this week I think.

Really like some of the other tournaments they have listed. The 80 pack draft sounds like a hoot!

Vintage Champs are normally Fridays at 1000, right?
They already have Vintage for an Uncut Antiquities sheet (20th Anniversary Limited Event Qualifier) taking place at 1200.
Seems fishy when added to the idea of a Gen Con Championship and Modern Champs being already listed.

At first I thought it was just am oversight or fact to be updated, but the totality of the circumstances leads me to believe vintage champs might not be at Gencon this year, as it wasn't in 2008. I predict a big 20tu anniversary announcement.

I was actually looking earlier this week at past announcements on the prize paintings to see when we could expect one this year. Last year, they announced the Timetwister and Brainstorm during the first week in March. Being two months late is a bit concerning.

This is really disappointing to me. I look forward to GenCon as being a place where I can go to hang out with you guys and play Vintage in the context of a larger and exciting event. With the lack of opportunities anywhere near me to play Vintage, this move basically means I have to choose between going to GenCon and ever playing Vintage again.

A crushing blow to those of use who attend GenCon just for this event. It's even worse to those who've purchased event GenCon badges and hotel rooms. Ugh!

Wizards, I hope, will do the right thing by the format.
If not, this is a devastating blow to Vintage, let alone American Vintage.
I planned the N.Y.S.E. Open for when I did in June because I wanted it to be GenCon prep. That's clearly not a factor right now.

When I had to request vacation time in January, I requested the week of GenCon because I wanted to keep open the option of going. Even if I wanted to attend the event they have planned, I may not be able to, as I would have to request different time off.

A few months ago I warned folks on twitter that this might happen because of what they I'd in 2008. I specifically asked Forsythe to verify that Vintage champs pulled be at gencon but got no reply. It seems Wizards is going to have a huge 20th anniversary bash somewhere. I won't be going to a gencon this year.

My guess (my hope) is that a) Vintage/Legacy champs are going to be part of a big 20th Anniversary celebration as Stephen speculated, and that b) there will be much greater security/WotC-control-of-the-area to prevent theft. Perhaps they just don't want the stain of theft and know that GenCon is a massive risk?

Vintage is a lovely format, it's too bad so few people can play because the supply of power is so small.
Chess really changed when they decided to stop making Queens and Bishops. I'm just glad I got my copies before the prices went crazy.

So if this is the case, they really should give us a heads up. People need time to make plans, request time off, buy travel, etc. I can't even begin to express how disappointed I am in how this was handled. Why wait until the last second and let Vintage/Legacy players find out like this?

I'll probably still go to GenCon - already got the PTO approved, booked a flight, hotel, and pre-registered for a badge. If anything I suppose the remaining Eternal tournaments just got that much easier to win. But, this is really disappointing. I expected this to be my last Champs tournament for quite some time. If Champs isn't within driving distance, I doubt I can go now due to my work/life circumstances and know I'm not alone in that. It is upsetting to know that I now have to pick between forfeiting money because this information wasn't released, and missing Champs. Also disappointing that GenCon, even if I go, won't be the same as the cast of characters I was hoping to see, won't be fully in attendance.

I for one will still be at Gencon. Considering it is a GAME convention and I play a lot of other GAMES. I do feel sorry for everyone who had hopes of playing Champs there. I know I did myself...

I'm still going to Gen Con and will play in their qualifiers for their big tourneys. The field for Vintage and Legacy should be a bit easier, so I might have a chance The change and their lack of communication is just ridiculous. We are three months out from Gen Con and just now they tell us that their annual tournament has moved? Hey, you have a 20th anniversary coming up, why not celebrate it at the same convention that you debuted your product? Most likely location for Champs is the World Cup in Amsterdam in June. Barring that they might do New York Comicon (tickets go on sale in 6 days) or Pax Prime. Will supremely suck if they choose either. Pax Prime tickets are already sold out and New York Comicon will be just as hard to get in. I guess they might do it at Spiel in Essen, and while our resident Europeans would enjoy that, it would close off the event for most in the US.

It's really hard to say where they will do it, but I expect a huge 20th Anniversary Celebration/gala. I'd like to be at that event regardless to help celebrate.
I agree that Gencon would have been a natural place for the historical significance, although Gencon was not in Indy in 1993 when Magic officially debuted.
I hope that the 20th Anniversary celebration event is accessible and open to everyone, and not far away. I would be disappointed if it is at the Essen Spiel or Worlds, and not just because they are in Europe.

This is pretty disappointing to the degree of pissing me off, and all of those who have to make travel plans and spend money booking flights and hotel rooms 4-9 months in advance. I think EC may be hosting a Bazaar of the Americas in 2014 finally, with commissioned artwork and real Vintage and Legacy prizes included. Stay tuned.

Any idea approximately WHEN it will happen? I have a baby due in October. Mid-August was fine, but much later than that will be a problem for me.

Beyond getting to own your ass in Goldeneye, N64-style, I've always felt it near impossible to play both Magic and any other game at GenCon with as full of attention. I will sadly be missing this, as I have to study for actuarial exams in late August, for the third time in a row.

... or a flight from Germany ... I really hope this is somewhere I can travel from Indy / Chicago, otherwise I possibly cannot attend. When I met Hiromichi at Bazaar of Moxen he told me he would not come this year because of the uncertainty where and when it is, and instead traveled to Annecy. A huge loss already...

I've been thinking about it, and my guess is that we'll know more this weekend.
As part of the live coverage for Pro Tours, they've been mixing in a fairly substantial announcement into each telecast. IIRC it was the announcement of a fourth Pro Tour per season at PTGTC, and Modern Masters at PTRtR. I think Commander's Arsenal was first mentioned at PTAVR even, though I can't remember that far back.
Of course, it could be something boring like whatever the fall Commander product is, or a Duel Deck, or Modern Masters/M14/Theros spoiler, but if there is indeed some huge 20th anniversary shindig planned, this seems like the perfect time to announce it.
