We are proud to bring you the Top 8 decklists from the GenCon 2013 Vintage Saturday 12pm tournament (for uncut sheet of Urza's Saga and other prizes). Below you will also find a complete metagame breakdown, with a list of what deck type each player played, a metagame breakdown, and pictures from the event itself. Enjoy! http://www.eternalcentral.com/?p=4225Check it out and let us know if we missed anything. PS. We're working to see if we can reconstruct the Top 8 decklists from the Friday event (lost by the tournament organizer apparently). If you have any info of names, decklists, and anything else please feel free to post here or PM me. Thanks!

I'm really loving the sideboards for both doomsday lists. Congrats all who did well.

Anyone there have insight on why Pyromancer did so poorly?

Honestly, I think the metagame adjusted accordingly. I was knocked out by three Young Pyromancer decks day one playing a Kuldotha Forgemaster list similar to Jordi's(winner of day two) list so I opted for a different style shop deck day two. I ended up beating three Young Pyromancer decks, one Workshop deck, one Burning Oath list, and Doomsday twice(I beat Sam in the swiss and in the top 8). The only thing I got dumptrucked by was that Mayor Fish deck in the swiss and Jordi in the semi finals. Apparently Wurmcoil Engine equipped with Batterskull happens to be quite the beast. EDIT: Day 1 Top 8 1 - Forgema$ter $hops (Irmler - Germany) 2 - Torture Chamber Shops (Becker - USA) 3 - Gush Mancer w/ Bolts (Grudzina) 4 - BoM BUG (Cavanaugh - USA) 5 - ? (Lodovico) 6 - Gush Mancer (?) (Greenbaum) 7 - ? (Butker) 8 - U/w Rest in Peace (me) Oh man, Shops taking 1st two days in a row at GenCon and devastating the top 8 at TDG's 2013 SUMMER OPEN! Looks like workshop pilots were unleashed this month.

Weren't there a bunch of Grow like decks in the top 8 of the first day? It just seems like the metagame adjusted. The Workshops that made top 8 in the event Nick Detwiler finaled have tons of anti Pyromancer technology.

I will explain better all card choices of my deck in the report that EC will publish but to summarize, I expected a lot of creatures and I prepared my sideboard accordingly.
I played 5 matches between Friday and Saturday tournaments and went 10-0. To me Pyromancer decks were like every other creature deck that proved unable to outrace my lifelink wurmcoils/batterskull. Against every creature deck I played I sided like this:
- 4 Thorn of Amethyst - 3 Sphere of Resistance + 3 Batterskull + 2 Caltrops + 1 Razormane Masticore + 1 Spine of Ish Sah
Your oponent is playing 2/1's while you are playing 5/3's, 3/5's, 4/4's, 6/6's, 5/5 + most creatures lose to caltrops (confidants, vendillion clique, young pyromancer, aven mindcensor, thalia, etc...).
That was my plan and it clearly worked.

I only played against one Pyromancer deck on Saturday, but it was probably my easiest match all day. He only got 3 turns in the entire match, Doomsday rolls over that deck.
As for the Oath sideboard, I wouldn't run it again. I only played against shops twice on Saturday(both Twaun), and I didn't win a single game. Maybe his deck was better positioned since he ran dismembers, though. It needs to be tested more.

It's great to see Mayor Fish well represented at this Gencon event and placing 6th. The only thing I'd add is that the name of the Rakdos Blood Witch is Exava, not Exora. Thanks for the report.

One other tidbit on the mayor fish build for whomever might be interested; the pilot added the singleton Orzhov Pontiff after the antiquities sheet tourny to help with the pyromancer matchup and add another answer for Dark Confidant. It did a ton of work en route to his top eight, so is something anyone looking running this deck may want to consider.

I added a darkblast for that purpose (helps Oath of Ghouls as well) , some are trying Izzet Staticaster, and I think Goblin Sharpshooter might also be a viable option to deal with such problems. Pontiff is a nice tech and has the advantage of being Human and is a tutor target for Recruiter.

Thanks for the heads up. I'd heard about the card being used in Birthing Pod lists in other formats but wasn't sure how it would play out in Vintage. The explosion of Pyro and that Affinity deck do weigh heavily in its favor.
