Reverent Hunter
2G
Creature — Human Archer   Rare
When Reverent Hunter enters the battlefield, put a number of +1/+1 counters on it equal to your devotion to green. (Each {G} in the mana costs of permanents you control counts toward your devotion to green.)
Illus. Wesley Burt   1/1

This doesn't look bad to me at all.  Especially in a deck like elves, where you have G mana symbols out the yazoo, he's coming down fast as a 4/4, 5/5, etc for just 3 mana and is bigger the later you drop him.  The nice thing is when you face a pyroclasm, this guy doesn't shrink (though a hexmage can take him down to size).  Overall, a pretty nice vanilla for the cost.

In Vintage, he might find room in a green heavy humans deck - but I see humans as much heavier into white at the moment than green.  I suppose the other question would be "is this guy as good as tarm" and the answer is clearly "no".  A 4/5 for 2 mana on turn two (not so uncommon) is a beast, and when it can grow further later - all the way up to an 8/9 now! - that's just too good.

This guy looks like a nice effect, and perhaps good in standard, but unplayable in vintage.

I agree it is not quite up there effect wise. Just doesn't appeal to me and I don't see a role for it in the Human decks I try to design. Cute with Exava (gives haste to creatures with a counter) but otherwise Exava doesn't enable it and I think they compete slot wise.

Need much higher quality to make it into the human decks. Or is there some really broken interaction hidden in the existing card pool or in a future print? Maybe it would have been more interesting for Vintage if it had a 3/3 body already making it a 4/4 bolt proof vanilla human for {2} {G}. Even then, I would hesitate to run it. Thing is, Humans is 5 color and this Reverent Hunter likes mono green.

Come on.  Thassa I could see discussing, since she's interesting.  This is a 3cc dork whose only ability is to maybe be huge if you already have a heavy green commitment to the board.  How is this even remotely Vintage playable again?
