I'm super psyched for this event, but as of right now, I don't really have any intention of participating in a second day.

If there was enough interest and Sunday turned out to be a big festivity, I'd definitely consider joining for the whole weekend.

Which way are you leaning, Ray?

Good luck to everyone!

Though without cardboard, I wish I could make this.

I will be moving around this time so it is not something I can do, sorry for anyone that was looking to crash as I will no longer be in the NE area.

Best of luck to all, and I can't wait to see the results!

Okay...I can't tell anyone why yet, but I need 17 profound statements about Vintage.  I will only tell you that if yours is chosen to be good enough for what I am looking for you will play a role in the hijinx that will take place at TMD Open 16.  Go...

The classic style

If you're going to do the frames, how about shaping the frames to indicate zones of play?

Something along these lines but with the appropriate pictures and whatnot?

Maybe this has been answered already and I am missing it, but I am curious what the best route of travel would be for someone who is flying in? In terms of airport and then travel from airport to the place. In addition, if there are already people planning this travel and want to share a ride or something and are looking for an additional person, I would be grateful. My plans really depend on travel, and the best I'm seeing at the moment is a flight from Rochester (where I am) to Westchester County Airport, but then its another 50+ minutes from there to the event. So that definitely requires a car or something, the other option is cab to a train, and then train to close by, which is 2 hours of travel on train?

I would appreciate any advice, if there is no good way to do this, I understand and hope you all have an awesome time. Smile

Rochester NY I assume? There is an airport in New Haven, which is about 16 miles from the venue, so you could fly in there. It's a smaller airport though, so fares are going to be steep, especially for such a short distance. I didn't shop around, but one site I checked had the cheapest one at over $300.

If you can bare it, a bus is probably your best bet. Again I didn't shop around, but Greyhound was about $70 to get you to New Haven (I think that was one way, but again you can probably do better). The trip is anywhere from 9-13 hours, which can be rough, but the shortest flight I found was also over 5 hrs due to nothing direct and holdovers. (The airport's website claims Piedmont Airlines does a direct flight from Rochester, but nothing came up on travelocity).

From there, assuming it drops you off at the airport (I didn't check, but that tend to be the case), public transit can technically get you to about 2 miles from the venue (according to Google Maps), though it seemed pretty roundabout and required like 4 transfers and ~2 hours even if you catch everything right. Renting a car or bumming a ride seems much easier from there, as it's only like a 25 minute drive.

Not sure if this link will work but here's Google Maps' public transit directions from the airport to the venue:
https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Tweed+New+Haven+Regional+Airport,+155+Burr+St,+East+Haven,+CT+06512/589+Bridgeport+Ave+%2317,+Milford,+CT+06460/@41.2562931,-73.0137448,13z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x89e7d7e323a1323d:0xd0c4b425e87be5ba!2m2!1d-72.890854!2d41.268637!1m5!1m1!1s0x89e87352d9337097:0xfc14358acd238e4d!2m2!1d-73.086652!2d41.20597!3e3

Vintage - the only format where the cards don't matter as much as the people.

Also, classic. All day long.

Hi everyone.

Busy day planning details for this event, but I am here with a number of updates.  First the annoying one, then the cool stuff.

1.) MOST IMPORTANT: The owner of Card Carrier Games has notified me that we must cap the attendance at 120.  I predict we will will be close to this number and am hopeful that we get close but don't have to turn anyone away at the door.  In order to guarantee your spot, you may preregister.  In order to do this, you can paypal the entry fee to iamfishman2000@hotmail.com and I will add your name to a list in the original post with all the preregistered players.

Once again, attendance will be capped at 120.  Preregister to guarantee a spot.  Otherwise you run the risk of not being able to play.

2.) WE WILL HAVE A DAY 2.  I have decided that while many people were on the fence about committing, it just makes sense to offer a day 2 option.  The prize will include a mox of 25 people show up.  Day 2's are in some ways more fun than Day 1 because they are laid back and casual, so be sure to stay the extra day and get some extra Vintage in.

3.) In addition to the team competition, I am excited to announce that this will be an official Grudge Match Tournament.  The grudge math will pit players from three geographical areas (New England, New York/Northern NJ, Pennsylvania/Southern NJ) against one another for pride and a sweet trophy.  Teams will be voted on and this competition will be separate from the team competition prompting me to encourage you to try to unlock the following achievement:

Triple Crown: Be the first to win a TMD Open, Team Competition, and Grudge Match at the same time.

4.) Jackie Gran will be at the event selling her awesome edible MTG creations (I believe cookies and brownies) and also some sweet custom playmats done by resident bleep-blop robot, Greg Fenton.  For examples of each of their incredible work, please see the original post.

Getting close to this event and I am getting psyched.

I am hoping to get the feel of some of the first few TMD opens back.  I have thought of a few old school games/hijinx/etc.  Don't worry, no syrup chugging contest.  For those who remember, that ended horribly.

I am going to let you all know about one of them right not.

-I ordered 300 custom fortune cookies.
-Each match will receive one each round while they last.
-The LOSER of each match gets the cookie as a consolation prize.
-Inside 16 of every 17 cookies is one of 16 custom messages that I have solicited from members of the Vintage community summing up our great formats.  There will be profound and funny statements from the likes of Rich Shay, Nick Detwiler, etc.
-1 out of every 17 cookies will have a message that informs the person who opened it that they won a door prize and that they should see me to claim said prize!

Just a little something to try to make it memorable for everyone, not just those who top 8/top 16.

More to come this week.  Stay tuned.

Oh...and let's hear some freakin trash talking already.

Most unfortunately I signed up months ago for a Tough Mudder happening on the 23rd.  By chosing to follow through on participating in the Mudder I will be missing this event.  I am very sad about this.  The 23rd also has the *only* Modern PTQ in my state this season, and a *free* Legacy event with strong prize support for the biggest store in my area's 15th anniversary celebration.  If I were just choosing between the magic events I would choose Vintage, but I'm sadly going to adhere to the sunk-cost fallacy and follow through with the Mudder.  My body's suffering at the end of the race will mirror the suffering caused by missing the TMD Open.  Sad

Good luck to all the competitors.
Logged

Vintage is a lovely format, it's too bad so few people can play because the supply of power is so small.

Chess really changed when they decided to stop making Queens and Bishops.  I'm just glad I got my copies before the prices went crazy.
