Purely a wincon that is actually detrimental when its not going infinite does not seem strong in the format.

It's a fine combo piece for crazy homebrews, but not even as useful as Altar of Dementia (which comes with its own sac outlet to boot) and certainly nowhere near Vintage playable.

If only Helm was tutor-able with Trinket Mage.  Otherwise you could make a fun Sensei-Sensei with uncounterable Magus of the Future and Trinket Mages with Cavern of Souls.

Fun idea.

That deck exists and it Top4'ed Vintage Champs on MTGO piloted by TMD'er Chubby Rain. But that kills with storm.

This is a bad win condition for that deck, I think. If you don't have Magus out and you're going for the Top+Top win, a simple Misstep will not only ruin your combo, but if the opponent has access to Will, this will win the game for him in a major way.

And if you're going the Magus+Top route, you'll probably deck yourself before decking your opponent... Lab Maniac would probably be better as an alternate win con.

While I agree with you otherwise, this part isn't true. Eventually you'll be able to control what you draw as you'll be down to two tops that just replace one another and you don't have to use Magus to continue to reduce your deck beyond 2 cards. Additionally, every Mox and more that you play does mill your opponent.

Maybe some kind of silly Gush-bond thing will pop up as a result of this?

This card is interesting.  With its combo potential, I give them credit for not making cost  {4} or more as we've seen with the more novel abilities from Theros/Homelands II era.  Though it does qualify as a wincon in known strategies like Auriok & MagusTop, it's not good enough on its own compared to Spellbombs & Sensei to replace anything there.  It does however look like something that could fuel an inadvertent combo like Painter did for Grindstone.  It is for instance a cheaper kill than Purphoros in that Cloudstone Curio deck floating around the fringes of Modern.  Seems it would also kill with one of those bizarre Fiend Hunter or Leonin Relic-Warder/Metamorph loops.

This also combos with Tidesprout Tyrant Oath allowing you to bounce moxen infinitely to mill out. In case you got notjing else to do with the infinite mana/storm.
