EDIT: During the tourney, I got paired up against THE David Ochoa, he crushed me. I has super awesome draws, but his were more awesome. I then got paired up vs Dustin (a semi-regular who sometimes travelled 80 miles to Vacaville for his Vintage fix (if I recall),and we battled. G3 I somehow won an improbable game, but the Judge noticed that I had a cellphone out taking pictures of gamestates, etc. As you may or may not know, Electronic Devices are a no-no at competetive REL nowadays. Also, this judge didn't know me, or what I do for the NorCal vintage scene. He asked me to put away my cellphone (understandable), and after explaining what I use it for, he was hesitant, but after prodding from David Ochoa "just let him take his pics, it's really ok...", the judge asked that I asked for permission (and probably not take pics of games I was playing in). So later in the tourney, I observed games, and when something interesting happened, I was like "say guys, mind if I take a pic of the gamestate?" answer was always yes. Later I reflected on the community/peer aspect of our Vintage scene and how we always treat each other with respect, listen to stories of bad beats/and/or awesome plays, and we all accept that crazy things happen in Vintage. "I lost to Vampiric Tutor, doh!" I really appreciate the respect that we treat each other, and don't hate on unconventional deck choices, and appreciate the feedback we give each other about bad plays, misunderstood rules mechanics, and ultimately respect for the judge to keep things as real as possible (even though our judge made some incorrect calls due to this being his first Vintage tourney gig). In short, I hadn't played Vintage tourneys for about 6 months, and even though I went 1-4, I had a blast!

Your story about the judge ruling is one of the best parts of playing Vintage. I've found sometimes the judge rulings are quite.. amusing in that they're not wrong, just it's not something many of us care about. I can't remember the names or the details off-hand, but I remember a time when somebody's opponent was late to a match by some minutes and got ruled a game loss. His opponent appealed the game loss to get it overturned so that they could play 3 full games instead. I don't believe the appeal was unsuccessful, but it's still an amusing anecdote!

That dredge list looks horrible. At least the chancellors are definitely crap which made it even more embarrassing to loose 2:0. In T8 I mull to 6 and keep a SNIP hand of wasteland, land, mox, thorn, golem, mishra. I drop the thorn, draw a Workshop to play t2 Golem and waste his BoB. Looks pretty good, but he has the 2nd Bazaar.. 2nd game I keep wasteland, workshop, mana crypt, Golem, Golem, Golem, sphere. He has 2 BoBs again!
Besides the tournament was fun and I had a great time, thanks for organizing Steve.

I don't get it. In game 1 you both had lucky hands, him with 2 BoBs and you drawing the shop off the top to be able to put up a quicker than 10 turn clock. In game 2 you had 3 of a sick 4 of in your hand and he had 2 of a sick 4 of in his... These games seem far more fair than the average dredge or workshop match. Glad to see you guys getting good turn outs. Were the oath decks Fenton style with show and tells or something else?

Exactly, this matchup isn't supposed to be a fair one. With 4 cages, 4 wasteland, 2 ratched bomb, 2 Relics (+12 spheres) Ichorid in general doesn't stand a chance. Do the math, the probability for having 2 BoBs is much smaller then me having 2 hate cards.

There were at least two players playing Dredge, and the person who made top 8 was Eliot. Lotushead, I think you may have posted the wrong decklists, but I'm not sure.
I played Eliot in round 3 to a draw, and he had the Dark Depths combo.
I'm looking forward to seeing the top 8 decklists

In order to make things as confusing as possible, there were actually two players playing Dredge, both named Eliot. The one in the top 8 was Eliot Burk. I imagine he put Adam Pierce in the "Desk Designer" spot on the deck list sheet to give credit for the Dark Depths idea ( http://www.eternalcentral.com/the-dredge-of-glory-an-introduction-to-manaless-dredge-in-vintage). Great time even though I didn't know how to play my deck -- will probably go back to Shops next time (I am the other Eliot who was playing Dredge). Thanks to Sam and Heiner for tolerating my ineptitude. I learned a lot, which was the goal, and actually had some really interactive, close and interesting games with Ibrahim in the last round. Looking forward to the next Vintage and/or Old School event!

my pleasure. i don't think you can expect to beat Dredge, however, with Wastelands and Spheres alone. If you had a Cage or Tabernacle, then I would have been surprised. @lotushead, thanks for putting up all of the decklists

@ LotusHead, you went through all this trouble taking pics during the event. Maybe this is a good forum to share. @ Steve, 2 Acall is your list and only 58 cards I think (I counted 3 times looking at my phone with different results each time!). Tabernacle alone, can't stop hasty Ichorids, Bloodghast or a Zealoted army. If you have chumpblockers its already better. Did you test them with other matchups in mind? Like the mirror?

Indeed it is! No, Tabernacle is strictly there for Dredge. Tabernacle can't alone stop Hasty Ichorids, etc, but I have found that Tabernacle slows down the rate of creature production, makes it much more difficult for them to strip away my hand and combo out. This allows my countermagic to become relevant, which means that I can actually counter Dread Return by the time they can actually cast it. Also, The rate of creature production is slower such that Pyromancer tokens, etc can actually block them up. Finally, Tabernacle means that they have to rely more on Bridges, which Ingot Chewer and Cage both stop. So, rather than trying to find silver bullets, I have a set of answers that work very well together (except for the disynergy between Cage and Chewer, which is fine). Also, it means that I can keep hands that I wouldn't be able to keep before. I really like this anti-Dredge configuration.

@ LotusHead, you went through all this trouble taking pics during the event. Maybe this is a good forum to share. When I got home, I immediately went out to tutor two different students. After Job #1 I typed up decklists. Now I'm home from Job #2 and will get to pics. Then go tutor another student. Patience! Round 1 paired up against David Ochoa. He redblasts my turn 1 time walk because what else is he gonna redblast vs 5c shops? my Trike tries and tries to hold off the David Ochoa Token army. Blaine and his chessboard of nasty artifacts... Dustin Shows me a Gristlebrand, I Show him a Duplicant! Brett Allen (Hiryu) clearly not worried about any of my silly artifacts. He's a tutor away from the win! Grislebrand vs the Revokers, I think. Heiner Litz rocking with the Workshops today! I got to admit, Elliot's dredge deck DID have so many insane plays! Like lots and lots of Bazaars! This isn't laying out a deck for fine tuning. This is dredge's gamestate. Aahz coulda put in Ancient Tombs to lose ALL the life from lands! Dustin looking for gas... Ocho Overload! Memnarch Picks Aahz's pockets and nabs a beta Mox Ruby, greaves up and kicks him in the nuts! The turn before, I had Trinisphere in play and Aahz on 2 land. I get fancy, then lose. Sam Sherman's Jailor locking up all the dredgers in the grave. New faces that showed up because of TMD threads and our NorCal Vintage Scene FB group (and Ocho's twitter feed) Gushbond during YawgWill turn. Empty the Warrens happens... Patrick and ye ol' Turn 1 Oath of Druids play. Top 8 Elliot vs Heiner and 2nd Bazaar... Smennen and his Trygon Beast. G2, waste your bazaar, triple Lodestone beats, gg? Elliot's at five, I guess... Blaine's Smokestack did WORK vs Michael Like eating his own Mana Crypt. I don't know what Sam does vs 1st turn Oath He sure don't scoop, that's for sure. Brett got to play it out, taking his infy turns until hardcasting gristlebrand 10 turns later... Blaine's Trinisphere Mindbreak Trapped by the dredge player. (aww...) Sam trying to play Magic... A fight is brewing... Blaine has front row seats to watch Elliot play Magic! Elliot still won't just die!

Thanks to Jeff for taking great photos. I loaded my deck for the Workshop matchup, since we have so many good Workshop pilots, but unfortunately didn't get to play against one

Thanks to Jeff for taking great photos. I loaded my deck for the Workshop mirror, since we have so many good Workshop pilots, but unfortunately didn't get to play against one Workshop Mirror? It says you were on URg Delver? I'm confused.

My accomplishments at this tourney were A) Having and awesome time B) Winning the game against the first turn Jace 2.0 somehow, and C) Getting a kill with Memnarch.

C) Getting a kill with Memnarch. Despite being on the wrong end of that (not to mention my terrible deck), this was a really fun event. I had almost forgotten how awesome grinding a bunch of Vintage is. My losing horribly was all worth it though since I twice managed to pull off Burning Wish --> Slaughter Games to conveniently rid my Oath opponents' decks/hands/etc. of that pesky Captain Hooks.
