I hope you're ready:

What:

N.Y.S.E. Open III

15 proxy, non-sanctioned Vintage tournament.

The top eight will be drafting power nine based on final standings in the event!  This means that you'll have a chance to draft the following cards if you make top eight:

1st-8th:

Unlimited Black Lotus
Unlimited Ancestral Recall
Unlimited Time Walk
Unlimited Mox Sapphire
Unlimited Mox Jet
Unlimited Mox Ruby
Unlimited Mox Emerald
Unlimited Mox Pearl

But the prize support doesn't end there:

9th-12th:

Mishra's Workshop

13th-16th:

Bazaar of Baghdad

The prices on many Vintage staples have shot through the roof in the last year, and it was no easy task to keep the prize support for this event the same while upgrading the venue and maintaining the entry fee.

In addition to that, and keeping with tradition, there will be a Karn, Silver Golem, altered by Poxy14 given out to the victor!

In addition to that, there will be a giveaway for all pre-registrants of another Karn, Silver Golem done by Poxy14:

Oh, and don't forget the trophy:

When:

Saturday, June 27th

10:00 am registration

11:00 am start

Where:

Four Points Sheraton
333 South Service Road
Plainview, NY
11803

(516) 694-6500

Team Event:

Magic is a great game, but most of the time it's a solitary one.  Team events are some of the most fun events in Magic, and there will be another team event at N.Y.S.E. Open III.

The entry is free.  There will be a trophy, engraved to note your team victory at the N.Y.S.E. Open III.  Points will be calculated by the total number of match points that a team receives.

For example, if a team has three players who finish with the following records:

5-2-1

4-3

4-3

That team would receive three points for each win (for a total of 39 points off the wins), with an additional point received for the draw (for a grand total of 40 points).  Losses have no point value.

Best of luck to all the teams!

Qualifiers:

If you're a T/O, and you want to run a qualifier to the N.Y.S.E Open, reach out to me via PM and we can discuss details.

There will be qualifiers in the New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania region.  I will keep this section updated as we add qualifier events to the calender.

N.Y.S.E. Open III Qualifier Victors:

3.  Michael Egan
4.  Brian Schlossberg
5.  Michael Scheffenacker
6.  Jonathan Geras
7.  Zohar Bhagat

9.  Travis Compton

Pre-Registration & On-Site Registration:

Entry for the event is $100 to all pre-registrants.  Pre-registration is non-refundable.

Players who pre-register for the event will also be entered into a random drawing for a second altered Karn, done by Poxy14.  Pre-registration will be open until 6/7.  Entry fee for the day of the event is $125.

Additionally, and perhaps most importantly, the registration for this event is going to be capped at 150 players.  I want as many people as possible to be there, and I think that with the added space we have, we're in a great position to accommodate everyone.  That said, please pre-register for this event if you intend on making the trip.  Not only will you save yourself $25, you'll also guarantee your spot in the tournament.

Pre-registration for this event has closed.  Regular registration (at $125) is open:

Proxies:

Most everyone on these forums knows what a proxy is.  A proxy, for the N.Y.S.E. Open, will be defined as the following:

A Magic: the Gathering card with the full name, card type (instant, sorcery, land, artifact, creature, enchantment, planeswalker), full mana cost and text clearly displayed.  This can be done in one of two ways:

1.  Using a Sharpie, not pen or pencil, to fill in the required text on a card where it can clearly be read. (Revised lands are excellent for this, new commons and uncommons aren't usually, as they're darker, and far tougher to read.)

2.  Using acetone to remove certain text from a card that's close to the intended proxy (i.e. Lotus Bloom, with certain words removed to proxy a Black Lotus, Ancestral Visions with certain words removed to proxy an Ancestral Recall).

Take pride in your proxies!  Your opponents should know at all times what your proxies are.

Using 15 Swamps to make your proxies is a bad idea, as it's going to create confusion.  If you're proxying Moxen, please, use a land from each appropriate color to make a proxy for that Mox (i.e., a Mox Sapphire is on an Island, a Mox Jet is on a Swamp, a Mox Pearl is on a Plains, etc.).

Please use your best judgment when creating your proxies; we know what will and what won't be easily recognizable.

Your opponents should not ever be at a disadvantage because you don't own the cards.  There is nothing wrong with using proxies as you slowly pick up the cards that you need to play Vintage, but please consider your opponents while you're making them, as we're out to make this an enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

If you're worried that your proxies may not pass muster, please speak to the head judge of the event before the event starts.  Leave enough time to create new proxies, if necessary.

Using paper printouts of card faces and gluing them to cards is not acceptable!  This alters the thickness of the cards, making the cards marked for all intents and purposes.  Please don't do this, as the judges will be instructed to consider these as marked cards, and enforce punishment according to DCI Competitive REL event rules!

Site Security:

Theft is always a concern, even if theft has never been a problem at one of my events before.  I feel that the security that we have had at the first two N.Y.S.E. Opens was exactly what was needed.  As with last year, we will have a secured entry area that will only be open to players in the event and staff.  Wristbands will be used to associate players with their corresponding bags.

You will not be able to leave with someone else's bag, and you will not be afforded entry to the play space unless you are playing in the event.  God help you if you're caught stealing.

Artist Appearances:

We are lucky enough to have four great Magic artists coming to this event!  Richard Kane Ferguson's unique style has graced iconic cards like Pillage, Dakkon Blackblade and Sol'Kanar, Swamp King.  Dan Frazier will forever be known for his work on the five Moxen, in addition to many other iconic pieces through the years.  Melissa Benson will always be remembered for iconic pieces such as Shivan Dragon, Nightmare and Lord of Atlantis.  Finally, Bryon Wackwitz will always be known for iconic pieces such as Angus Mackenzie, Force Spike, and Pendelhaven.

For a list of Richard Kane Ferguson's work:

http://magiccards.info/query?q=a%3A%22richard+kane+ferguson%22&v=card&s=cname

For a list of Dan Frazier's work:

http://magiccards.info/query?q=a%3A%22dan+frazier%22&v=card&s=cname

For a list of Melissa Benson's work:

For a list of Bryon Wackwitz's work:

http://magiccards.info/query?q=a%3A%22bryon+wackwitz%22&v=card&s=cname

All four artists are featured in The Gathering, a great book celebrating the history of the game's early artists.   They have done some phenomenal work in the books that I've seen; I strongly recommend purchasing a copy of the book if you haven't already, and having these great artists work in your copy.

Custom Playmats:

Greg Fenton's playmats were quite the hit last year, and they'll be back.  Here's the image that was used for last year's N.Y.S.E. Open II playmat:

Playmats are $40 per, with an exceptionally limited quantity on hand for the day of the event.

If you can't make the event, but you'd like to purchase a playmat, you're in luck!  Greg will be pre-selling this year's N.Y.S.E. Open playmat.

To purchase a playmat, please reach out to Greg here:

http://www.themanadrain.com/index.php?action=profile;u=20926

I highly recommend buying a mat from Greg before the event, and picking up the mat the day of the tournament.

Greg has also done some of the most beautiful custom mats I've ever seen.  Here are some examples of his work:

N.Y.S.E. Open III Shirts and Dice:

I have paired with Jason Jaco, and he has produced a very limited run of N.Y.S.E. Open III t-shirts:

If you'd like to order one of these shirts, please head here:

http://www.themanadrain.com/index.php?topic=47766.0

Additionally, thanks in large part to Will Magrann, there will be a limited run of N.Y.S.E. Open III dice that will be available on Saturday, at the event:

Dice are $1 per.  I only have about 100 or so dice, so if you're interested, please purchase them early in the day.  There will be a per-person limit of 10 dice.

Friday Night Vintage:

As with last year, the N.Y.S.E. Open isn't meant to be a solitary event, but a weekend of Vintage.

There is no better way to start off a weekend of Vintage than to have Friday Night Vintage at The Comic Book Depot.

What:

$10 entry, 15 proxy, non-sanctioned Vintage credit tournament.

Prize support will scale with attendance.

Where:

The Comic Book Depot
2847 Jerusalem Avenue
Wantagh, NY 11793-2016

(516) 221-9337

When:

7:00 pm registration
7:15 pm start

To cap off the N.Y.S.E. Open weekend, we have a Mishra's Workshop tournament at The Comic Book Depot on Sunday:

Where:

The Comic Book Depot
2847 Jerusalem Avenue
Wantagh, NY 11793-2016

(516) 221-9337

When:

Sunday, 6/28

11:00 am registration
12:00 pm start

What:

$30, 15 proxy, non-sanctioned Vintage tournament

Prize Structure:

1st - Mishra's Workshop (guaranteed at 18 players)
2nd - $60 credit (at 20 players)
3rd/4th - $30 credit (at 22 players)

An additional $30 in credit will be added to the prize pool with every entrant.

Artist Appearance:

We are lucky enough to have one of the great Magic artists, and true gentlemen of the game, attending the Sunday Depot tournament; Jeff Menges will be available (schedule permitting) early on Sunday.  Jeff will have proofs, prints, and more.  If I were you, I'd look to have Jeff do some work in your copy of The Gathering.

For a full list of Jeff Menges' work:

http://magiccards.info/query?q=a%3A%22Jeff+A.+Menges%22&v=card&s=cname

Theft:

Theft has never been an issue at one of my events before, and I will do everything in my power to ensure that this streak continues.

If you are caught stealing (and given cameras, security, etc., you will be caught) I will ensure that the thief in question is arrested.  I will push for charges to be pressed.  This will be a horrific experience for all thieves.  I promise.  Let's not go down this path, and instead keep the event as the focal point.

Miscellaneous:

Card Titan pays to be at the N.Y.S.E. Open, and they are integral to this event.  Please, absolutely no buying and selling at the venue.  If you have business to do with someone, please don't disrespect the dealer who paid to be there by conducting it on site.  Buying and selling in the venue is enough to get you a refund on your entry and an escort to the door, so please don't do it.  This was an issue last year.

There is a rather considerable amount of effort that goes into a weekend like this.  We have artists on site, custom playmats, the best Vintage dealer in the U.S. and more.  Please thank Nick Coss, Greg Fenton, Jackie Gran, Brian Paskoff, Mark Aronowitz, Dan Frazier, Richard Kane Ferguson, site security and all my staff when you see them there; I couldn't do this event without all of their help.

Questions, comments, concerns?  Reach out to me via personal message on TMD and I'll address all I can.

In the meantime though, I hope to see you all in June!

Regrettably, a confluence of circumstances will not allow me to avenge my "best-while-still-failing" 9th place finish from last year (new job=no vacation time, yet).

I hope it's an even better turn out though!  I'm sure the event is going to a blast, I'm sad to have to miss it.

I already had this planned before it was announced. Im attending this. I only need to find out when the other local, specifically the TDG and Bloomsburg tournaments, are in relation to this. (I plan on spending 3 weeks in the northeast primarily to play vintage)

Some giveaways for the event:

Brainstorm playmats, sleeves and deck boxes.  Prints from Chris Rush and RK Post.   Playmats by Chris Rush and Mark Poole.

I didn't skimp on the giveaways.

There will be Vintage on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The location won't be the same for all three events.

The full announcement should be up by Wednesday.

The basic announcement is up!

There is a lot more in the works right now, so expect many positive additions to this over the coming weeks and months!

Hey Nick, I thought this one would have been 10 proxy because I thought that's what I saw in the thread for the last one but I'm so excited that it is 15 proxy.   I was planning on having to purchase duals and instead I can now use that money on airfare, making this whole venture so much more in my budget.

15 proxies is probably a good spot to occupy, but please make sure that your proxies fall within the guidelines.

The hotel has rooms available for Friday night, but not Saturday night.  Sorry guys, I wanted it too, as it would have made things easier for everyone. Finding a venue that was an affordable upgrade wasn't easy, and this was one of the trade-offs. Luckily, there are many hotels close by, and given that I expect people to be driving to the venue for the most part, it won't be more than a short trip to the tournament.

It looks superb and the past two NYSE's were incredible.  I plan to attend.

What's the nearest airport, and what do folks recommend for hotel accommodations?

Dont you have an assistant for this?

This adds nothing to the discussion. Please stay on topic.

Plainview is stuck between three local airports, really.

On the Queens end you have La Guardia and JFK.  They're about an hour away from the venue.  On the Long Island side, you have MacArthur.  MacArthur is closer, but I doubt you're going to find a flight that flies directly from San Francisco to MacArthur.

It's probably cheapest to fly into either La Guardia or JFK.

I'd book a hotel now, if I were you.  This is graduation season and there are a lot of bookings already.  Better safe than sorry.

Also, as a reminder, this event is open to all players whose DCI membership is in good standing.  Any player currently serving a DCI ban will not be able to participate in this event.
