I've never actually played D&D before and would love to learn. I have a few friends that play but scheduling is too much of an issue. I would really like to DM because I love world building but I think I should get a feel for the game first. Playing a game seems to be the best way to learn it.

It all depends on what the group wants, but you can try some of the DnD games that they put out. They have a lot of story but typically are a little more closed off than a typical home game. I tend to really enjoy the crazy scenario's that players invent. Maybe there is a Skype based game you could look into? It certainly is something that could work with enough effort from the players.

Neverwinter Nights was a CRPG based on D&D 3rd edition that allowed the game to be led by a Dungeon Master while played by many players online. It's old so it might be hard to find an active campaign but there should be a ton of old campaign material online.

Wizards publish Starter games to ease people into the game, you could try to play this first with your friends.
