Here's a quick round up of the Team Serious Open held at Eternal Games in Warren, MI this past Saturday. Deck lists weren't collected so it was pretty bad ass having the opportunity to adjust sideboards after round one to accommodate the meta.

Here we go.

18 Vintage aficionados made their way out to swap stories about proper monocle placement and top hat tilting angles.

Standings prior to top eight.

(one person did drop)

I believe the top 8 assassin's weapons of choice were

Charlie "I X-0 the swiss cause my deck is the cheese" Krug - Forgemaster Shops
Duane "I'm X-0 lifetime against Twaun007" Haddix - TerraNova Shops
Patrick 'King of the Impossible"Ohren - Gifts Academy Rector Flash
Jerry "I got more lyrical fire than a Balrog" Yang - UR Delver
Aaron "A A Ron" Katz - Merfolk
Justin "I'm a baller" Waller - Forgemaster Shops
Anthony "Twaun007" Michaels - Twaunstax
Kevin "Darth CHA1N5" Cron - UWr Mentor Cron-trol

Justin Waller took it down with Workshops defeating Cron in the finals

Yangtime and Duane placed 3rd/4th

And everyone else got smoked 1st round in top 8

I can try and locate deck lists if they're requested.

Yeah. I think it had Oath in the board or main as well.

And I didn't see a single Bomberman deck Wink

Perhaps he should have played Bomberman, given he finished 15th out of 17th... Wink

"Why are we making bad decks? I mean, honestly, what is our reason for doing this?"

"Is this a Vintage deck or a Cube deck?" "Is it sad that you have to ask?"

"Is that a draft deck?" "Why do people keep asking that?"

Random conversations...

Hey there, that's an interesting list. I like the Tangle Wires and Crucibles, but don't love the Smokestacks. I suppose you could play 1 to tutor up with Forgemaster if/when the need arises (or perhaps a Ratchet Bomb?). Why did you choose to only play 3 Forgemasters? I always want to see have that card (or multiples of it) in my hand when playing a Forgemaster deck.

FWIW, Patrick Ohren was on a Gifts Academy Rector Flash deck.
Do you, or he (if he's on these boards) know the decklist? I'm curious as to how it compares to the one I wrote about on EC, what his thoughts were, and what he would change from it.

Jaco,

The short answer is I like the utility of being able to tutor but dislike losing lock pieces to do so.  And smokestack further enforced the incremental ways I was looking to lock my opp out.

The rector player was playing a list almost identical to what you posted with some substitutions in the board.

Please check your inbox, I sent a message in regards to submitting a piece to EC.

The SCV / Oath hybrid thing didn't work out quite as well as I was hoping it would -- but I don't think the deck was as bad as the result that I put up.

Straight Oath or Straight SCV is probably just a better choice in general.  Over the course of about five rounds I'm pretty sure that my mana base did approximately 1000 damage to me.  So, just adding Orchards (even to a fast combo deck) certainly has a very real cost.

I was hoping that adding Oaths would help me out against Workshop decks.  I actually played against a Shop deck but I never drew an Oath (and wouldn't you know that I had a five or six turn window to draw an Oath but didn't!).

I also lost to a mono blue counterspell deck to get eliminated from Top eight which I certainly wasn't planning on playing against.

But I beat Dredge and so I went home happy.  Had a blast playing at this tournament and really enjoyed playing my deck even though it wasn't built ideally.  I learned a lot about the format and am looking forward to playing more Vintage in the coming months.
