1  Eternal Formats / Creative / Coretapper? on: July 12, 2004, 09:06:55 am
Where did you find coretapper in a belcher sb?  The only post that I have found that includes coretapper is yours.

EDIT: I have only searched relevant forums.
2  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / 5 strips on: July 11, 2004, 06:16:50 pm
Wasteland and Strip Mine boost the effectiveness of Tangle Wire.  Without them control players are often able to weedle their way out from under the wire too early allowing them enough time to gain control of the match.  Unfortunately, against most aggro decks the strips are often dead, but this is OK.  Most aggro decks lack instant speed spells such as brainstorm which means their turns are almost as unproductive as they can get.

I am an avid Mac and UNIX user and i have heard that there is a program called mindless that will let you play magic on the internet.  http://www.essentialmagic.com/Forums/Thread.asp?ID=399887
That has instructions for installing the program and getting it updated.  I just came across it the other day and am struggling to get fink to cooperate with me,
4  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Lightning Greaves on: June 15, 2004, 04:01:50 pm
So far this looks like a solid deck with more potential locked away than meets the eye.  Lightning greaves can be an amazing card in this deck giving it a more explosive impact on the game powering out multiple fatties in a turn with the ability of being able to swing with them as well.  Looking at any decklist it is important to remember that numbers need not be set in stone.  With such a strong draw engine(Draw 7's combined with a few TFK's) you are able to cycle through a great portion of your deck with relative ease.  Since you have the draw 7's in there you probably won't need 4 TFK's.  Three should suffice.  Likewise having 2 Sundering Titans can be overkill.  You shouldn't need him every time for the victory so a tutorable copy should be fine.  Lastly, 4 trinispheres can often clog a hand seeing that having multiples serves you no better than one.  Try testing:

-1 Sundering Titan
-1 Trinisphere
-1 TFK
+3 Lightning Greaves
5  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Disruption on: June 14, 2004, 08:08:49 pm
@Covetous:  I see that you realized that you need disruption.   I have took a good look at the decklist that you first posted and realized that it is very similar to BSR.

This is what I have noticed about your changes:

you have taken out a trike for a pentavus in order to get an infinite mindslaver combo going.

you have replaced Tanglewires with thirst for knowledge

You have abandoned the 5 strip plan in favor of more blue sources and tombs

You have also replace Myr Enforcer with Su-Chi.

Based on these changes I have a bunch of questions still in my head as well as my take on the issue.

Your first change ( the addition of the pentavus at the expense of the trike) does two things.  It creates the possibility of an infinite combo that serves as a "win more" scenario as well as removes half of what little maindeck removal that you have in BSR.

Secondly replacing Tanglewires with TFK gives you more search and a greater reliance on Blue at the expense of maindeck disruption.  After more testing you have admitted that you need maindeck disruption but overlooked where this deck has been and what it has traditionally used.

Replacing Myr Enforcer with Su-chi is not necesarily a bad thing.  Myr Enforcer was in BSR because it gives it the chance to go insane dropping vast amounts of creatures for very little mana.  Su -Chi slows the deck down but also allows for welder tricks.  IMO it is strictly inferior for the type of deck you are striving for but it is not a bad or unplayable card by any means.

lastly you abandon of the 5 strip plan made sense at the time because you were more reliant on blue sources and no longer had tangle wire to make your strips more potent.

I am not trying to promote BSR but i just saw so many similarities i couldn't help but chime in.

I just want ot make  one comment about BSR and hybrid decks.  Even though it isn't officially a hybrid deck it acts just like one since it has multiple gameplans and routes to victory.  I do not think it will be very easy for you to succeed in making a hybrid deck between BSR and anything else because BSR's gameplan is already varied and erratic.  At least the version I play can play out three different ways.  By playing out your tangle wires, a single threat, and tinkering for mindslaver you can take a more controllish route.  Tinkering for memory jar and trying to cast it multiple times off metalworker relying on greaves to keep the combo going gives a comboish feel to the deck.  And last but certainly not least there is straight aggro plan of just dropping guys and going for the kill.  I would like to give more constructive criticism of your deck but i can't seem to find a solid gameplan within it that hasn't already been covered by BSR save the infinite mindslaver combo.

All i want to do is leave you with a question in your head ... How do you want your deck to win?
6  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / [Deck] WelderMUD - Can it be viable again? on: June 14, 2004, 07:27:45 pm
@willie:  Not only is welder a very strong play but there is a variety of sideboard tech that is available to Red right now ... Artifact destruction such as R&R come to mind almost immedately.  Now i don't want this to sound like a flame( cause it is not ), because  I believe that the only colored cards that should be main are the welders, and possibly some good blue Power(eg not timetwister).  You would have to change quite bit about how the mana base would work but I believe that the change is well worth it.

There are many ways that this deck can be built, many can be successful.  I just don' believe in bashing down a steel door with a battering ram when i can bust out my utility belt.
7  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / A different look on: June 14, 2004, 07:10:56 pm
As i look at your deck I can see many places where it seems a bit rough around the edges.  Some of the cards that I believe should be replaced are Arcbound Ravager, Frogmite, and Shrapnel Blast.  As you have stated the ravager does not pack quite the same punch in this deck as it does in other decks.  In my eyes, its lack of sheer power and utility make it the first to cut.  Secondly, your reasoning for using frogmites cannot fully justify their presence in the deck.  Their small stature immensely hurts their chances of staying in the deck.  Lastly, it seems as though shrapnal blast is sub-par compared with the uility that Fire/Ice brings.  Granted it deals far more damage but it also costs you two cards.

In their stead I have added two Masticores, 3 Trinispheres, and three Fire/Ice.  It is not easy to decide what needs to be played and I am not claiming that I am necesarily right but from what you have described I think this can be a change for the better.

Trinispheres add a great disruption element to the deck ofen times holding conrol decks down just far enough for you to slip under their radar.  They are also capable of crippling a combo deck giving you a fighting chance.  I chose three because when I was playing a similar deck with 4 there were just far too many and it ended up clogging my hand since you only need 1 in play at any given time.

IMO Masticore isn't used enough among artifact aggro decks.  It is an additional beatstick as well as a good regenerator.  Against other aggro decks it can swing control of the board in your favor.  Plus its "drawback" can often be used as an addition discard outlet to fuel welder.

The last card that I added was Fire/Ice.  This card has proven to be a great resource against opposing 1/1 utility creatures, killing welders like nobody's business.  Against control it just cycles itself EOT hopefully bringing your opponent out of mana drain territory.
8  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Metalworker's Usefulness on: April 29, 2004, 09:12:55 am
There is a fundamental problem the control player must come to deal with when deciding whether or not to counter the lowly metalworker.  Yes, if he/she does not counter it there can be multiple threats coming down next turn.  If he/she does counter it, will they be able to draw into another answer for the obviously held next threat on the following turn?  Most players would not keep a hand that had just a metalworker in it relying solely on the metalworker's ability to complete the job.  I play the worker in BSR, and I find that playing it provides a great advantage against control, because it either absorbs counters/removal or helps me to overwhelm my opponent with more spells than they can counter/remove.  If you would like to see a way that the metalworker can be abused take a look at my thread on BSR or search for what Samite Healer(the creator of Broodstarrunner) had to say about the deck.  There are a few comments on the card there.

I am not saying that metalworker is the best card ever.  I was just trying to make a point that the card has plenty of power and can be abused if put in the right deck.
9  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / BSR Revisited (revised post) on: April 28, 2004, 08:38:58 pm
Broodstarrunner.dec was the first deck I ever played in a competitive Type 1 environment (Hadley, MA).  I first “foundâ€? it when Samite Healer pointed it out when I asked for suggestions on what to play.  Since then I have done a great deal of testing in order to better understand the deck as well as improve upon it.

BSR version 3.1 (60 Cards)

4 Juggernaut
4 Myr Enforcer
2 Triskelion

4 Goblin Welder {Utility Critters}
4 Metalworker

4 Tangle Wire

3 Lightning Greaves

1 Ancestral Recall
1 Wheel of Fortune
1 Memory Jar
1 Tinker
1 Timetwister
1 Mindslaver
1 Time Walk

1 Lotus Petal
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Mana Crypt
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Pearl
1 Sol Ring
1 Black Lotus
1 Mana Vault
1 Tolarian Academy
4 Volcanic Island
4 Polluted Delta
4 Mishra's Workshop
4 Wasteland
1 Strip Mine

Just like in any deck these card choices are open to change after some discussion.

My Thoughts:

Myr Enforcer is a great card in this deck as it goes broken or faces other aggro but it fails in comparison with Su-chi against control.  If it gets drained it gives your opponent 7 mana on their next turn to deal with all of the other threats you played.  7 is a long way away from 4 in terms of creating an advantage.  Su-chi’s “drawbackâ€? can be used to your advantage while trying to get around mana constraints against a control deck.  When testing against hulk and GAT I was able to weld out my Su-chi for a Mindslaver in a number of games where I wouldn’t have had enough “realâ€? mana to slaver them otherwise.

Likewise, I have also found that when playing in a control heavy gauntlet, Trinisphere is a decent replacement for Tangle Wire if you are already playing with Su-Chi.  Trinisphere will only hit your moxen and welders while destroying your opponent’s ability to counter your threats multiple times in a turn.

Lastly, I would like to discuss Lotus Petal.  This spot was originally Grim Monolith, but I found that I wanted colored mana more often in aggro matchups.  I have been testing Mindslaver in this slot in hopes to get it to come up sooner, and it seems to work rather well against anything other than mindless beef.  The second slaver also helps against Dragon and other combo if I can get it to go off 2nd or 3rd  turn (which isn’t all that difficult).

I have found that this deck’s greatest weakness is against combo.  Tangle Wire helps this situation out against non-dragon decks by slowing them down long enough to pull out a win.  Unfortunately this game plan simply sucks second game when the inevitable artifact hate swarms your way.

My Waterbury Results:
After 8 rounds of swiss I was in 8th place with 19 points.  My record was 6-1-1 (13-3 in games)  Then I lost the first round of the single elimination to FCG.

Throughout the course of the day I have played against(in order):
Landstill (2-0)
Some random BG rogue deck (2-0)
4-c Hulk (2-0)
EBA (2-0)
Mud (no red) (2-0)
Mono Green Aggro (1-2)
FCG (2-1)
FCG (1-2)
10  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / My Build on: March 31, 2004, 11:37:10 am
Personally I disagree with how Meddling Mage built his version.  I don't believe Cunning Wish and Lightning Greaves deserve spots in this deck.  I took mtg_player_2004's decklist and:

    -2 Myr Moonvessel
    -4 Goblin Welder
    -1 Wheel of fortune

    +4 Arcbound Worker
    +1 Vampiric Tutor
    +1 Timetwister
    +1 Arcbound Crusher

And I adjusted the mana base accordingly to get:

4 arcbound ravager
4 disciple of the vault
4 arcbound crusher
4 skullclamp
4 thoughtcast
4 arcbound worker
3 genesis chamber
1 Tinker
1 Timetwister
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Time Walk
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Windfall
1 Ancestral Recall
1 memory jar
7 Solomoxen
1 mana vault
1 mana crypt
4 mishra's workshop
4 glimmerviod
3 polluted delta
4 underground sea
1 tolarian academy

I took out the welders because in testing they weren't that amazing.  I didn't have Thirst for Knowledge in the deck, nor am I TNT running Survival to get things in the grave so they could not be used as acceleration.  Granted, you can do some neat tricks with them but I don't think they are necesary.  Since the welders went it only made sense to take out the Wheel of Fortune because it is the only red card left.  Timetwister replaces Wheel quite nicely.  Myr Moonvessel came out for Arcbound Workers because the extra counters are worth it.
11  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / 10 proxies on: March 29, 2004, 05:23:17 pm
Personally I believe that 10 proxies is the perfect number.  I have 8 of the 9 pieces of power, missing the lotus of course, and I find that I can build most any deck with 10 proxies.  If I didn't have the power I would be using my proxies only on power itself and I would get to play with workshops or bazaars.  I still try to get all of the cards because proxies are ugly, but now i don't have to kill myself working for it in the process.  Magic has other expenses associated with it other than just trying to get the cards.  Every weekend I go through a full tank of gas as well as spending money on take-out in addition the the entrance fee of the tournement.  It all adds up fast, especially because I am a fat ass, I eat alot, and I am away from home so I can't cook.  If I had to add the price of aquiring a bunch of rares that I may never use again(tangle wire) it would be too much.  Granted a few rares here or there are not much compared to trying to buy power, but i can see the point of proxying lesser cards.  There is no refund  program for cards, no 30 day money back guarantee if you are dissatisfied with the card, and no warranty, but with proxies I can "try it before I buy it".  If the cards I just played with are good I will trade for them or buy them much like test driving a car.  I think it is also important to note that I would not be playing type 1 at all if it wasn't for proxies.
12  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Common Courtesy on: March 28, 2004, 02:23:21 am
Personally i have shuffled my opponent's decks every time.  Each time I shuffle I respect my opponent's cards while making sure that their deck is suffeciently randomized.  It is nothing against my opponent, just a practice that I have incorporated into my pre-game routine.  Personally I riffle shuffle my own deck, but when handling my opponent's deck I am as gentle as can be expected.  I cut their deck in a random spot, put the two sides together, and let the cards gently fall into place mixing with each other all the while looking away from their deck.  I only repeat this procedure about 2-3 times spending under a minute total.  If this bothers my opponent then I would consider their further actions suspect and make an attempt to monitor* them closely just as a precautionary measure to keep myself from being a victim of cheating.  I don't subscribe to the whole "If you cheat you are only cheating yourself" mentality simply because there are rewards for cheating if you get away with it.  A $600 prize may not be much for some people, but to me that's a week's paycheck, and to other's it may be a sign of accomplishment.

*Note: I said monitoring, not rules lawyering.  If my opponent put a vampiric tutor in the graveyard before searching their library I am NOT going to call a judge.
13  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / [Deck Discussion] EBA on: March 11, 2004, 09:37:59 pm
I have not played this deck and what I say does not necesarily matter but my gut reaction is

-3 Phids
-2 decree of justice

+3 negators
+2 swords of fire and ice

Even against red it is still possible to play negator around burn.  Meddling mage, duress, and counter make sure of it.  Ophidian is really slow in this enviornment IMHO, and decree is neither as agressive or as fast as the Negator.  I think sword is a great compliment to this deck either being dropped on a flyer or a trampler making it more likely that its draw card and damage abilitys will be triggered.  It doesn't get shutdown my maindeck hate as often as it would in other decks simply becasue of the control element in this deck.  That is not to say that it can't be shut down.  Just my thoughts.

14  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Round 5 on: March 11, 2004, 08:45:19 pm
Haha, now i remember that game better.  i might have gotten it confused with one of my pickup games earlier.  And an addition to your post as well... I time walk with 0 cards in  hand into a twister the regain parity to win the game. Smile  I apologize for any mistakes I might have made in the report due to my failing memory, but i tried my best.
15  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Report on: March 11, 2004, 12:58:37 pm
i am not used to writing tournement reports so I am not sure what people expect when they read them.  I will give a bit more detail:
I didn't post my sideboard cause it was thrown together last min and it sucked but here it is:

3 REBs
3 Pyrostatic Pillars
3 Hibernation
3 Rack and Ruin
3 Fire/Ice

Round 1 vs. Welder TriniMUD

Game 1:
Dropped lots of Fat and swung for the kill
game 2:
Sided:
+3 rack and Ruin
-2 Thirst for Knowledge
-1 Mox Pearl

Gary: opens with a turn one trinisphere dropping a mountain and a sol ring to cast it.
Me: land, go.
Gary, drops chalice for 0.
Me: land, go.
Gary: drops mountain and a smokestack
Me:land, Rack and ruin his sol ring and his trinisphere leaving him with 2 mountains, challice for 0(useless in this case), and a smokestack that he will most likely not want to activate.
gary: Draw, go.
Me: Go nuts and drop lots of fat ... and so on for the remainder fo the game.

Round 2 vs Jeff w/ O Stompy
This matchup was longer and a bit more fuzzy who won what game so I will talk about how cards were used and how they fared instead.

For the mostpart my creatures just served to keep myself alive trading with his untill I could get tangle wire on the board and swing through.  Juggs flying out faster than his Arrogant Wurms was a key player in my winning.  I sideboarded in hibernation against him but i was not happy with the results.  Personally I think that what I sideboarded out ( 2 Thirst and the mox pearl) would have been more useful.

Round 3 vs. Pete w/Pete's control   I lost 1-2
Honestly this entier matchup escapes me.  I think i was getting hungry and delerious at this point casue all I remember afterwards is getting Taco Bell.

Round 4 vs. Sam Antill w/dryad hate   I lost 1-2
game 1 i lose to really big dryads that eat juggs and enforcer for breakfast.  damping matrix is the devil that hurts my in hand jars.
game 2 I get a broken draw playing draw 7's everywhere.  i drop a pair of juggs and 3 enforcers but sam firestorms them away.  then i topdeck like a bastard(which this deck seems to be good at) and swing in without too much more trouble.
game 3 I lose to not drawing threats and big dryads staring me down.

Round 5: vs. TriniStax
Game 1 I run through him with much thought
game 2 he gets a lock before i can hit hard so i lose
game three rack and ruin becomes my MVP and I win again.

Round 6 vs. Ethan with Cum the the big O
i won 2-1 ... Not sure what else happened.  I'm fat so I was hungry and delerious again.  Before Top 8 I had more from the Bell.

Top 8

Pete w/ Pete's Control (again)
I wasn't looking foward to this matchup because I had already lost to him in the swiss but I felt slightly more confident since I knew what he was playing beforehand and what worked.  I remember winning the first game dropping more threats than he can handle effeciently.  Second game I lost to two exalted angels hittting the board and third game he had a really bad draw.

Semi's vs Eastman w/Hulk Smash
eastman was a fun person to face being both friendly and entertaining.  I won the first game(i think) from dropping threats and swinging like usual.  Second game I lost beacause of Deed and my stupidity in playing a Myr enforcer when I really didn't need him on the board on top of forgetting to greaves up juggs for an extra attack.  Third game I won ... but i don't remember how.

Finals vs Sam
There isn't much to say.. I lucked out and got ridiculously broken draws winning me games 1 and 2 on turns 2 and 4 respectively.  I think there was scooping involoved but I was so over enthused to be winning a Mox that i don't remember clearly.

Next tournement I will take better notes just in case i am ina  position to write another Top 8 report.
16  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Combo on: March 11, 2004, 01:35:34 am
Well it is no really a combo per se.  The deck is able to cast multiple Draw-7's in a single turn with the help of hasted Welders and Metalworkers as well as moxen and other mana accelerators.  Then finishing the turn with a massive attack and/or dropping a few more fatties.  Sometimes I can even hit a time walk in the midst of this endless turn.
17  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / 1st with Broodstarrunner.dec @ Hadley 3/6/04 on: March 11, 2004, 12:10:45 am
@waSP
Platinum Angel is another consideration at this point possibly added as the 61st card or in place of a 4th tangle wire.  I agree that  a greaved angel can be a gamewinner especially since it would take the combination of two cards to get off the board.
18  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Replies on: March 11, 2004, 12:07:17 am
@Zelc:
I believe Mindslaver totally deserves a spot in this deck.  Currently I have begun testing the list

-2  thirst for knowledge
+1 Mindslaver
+1 Tangle Wire

This seems to work better seeing that I have cut Thirst every time I needed to sideboard.  Mindslaver makes for a good tinker target in cases where Memory Jar wouldn't be the best pick.  I haven't had a chance to test Bosh but I don't think that he will be as spectacular as he might seem at first glance.  Triskellion is absolutely needed in this deck as maindeck removal of opposing welders as well as extra damage to the dome when needed.  This deck takes the beatdown route more often than all out combo, but it isn't by a great margin.  I would say about 60/40 split beatdown/combo ratio.  The first myr enforcer I play usually hits the table for 3-4 mana if I can't utilize the brokenness of the Draw-7's.  Su-Chi's stable mana cost takes more away from the deck(4 mana burn if it dies) than would add because when I "go off" I can't do silly things like drop a juggs or two followed by a number of 4/4's.  Su-Chi also hurts my chances against other aggro because I will be taking mana burn from its effects.  All in all good suggestions.

The full report can be found later in this thread

Finally getting off my ass to write this report I realize that there weren’t many memorable events that were worth bringing up as a whole.  I remember each of the matchups pretty well, but not like a turn for turn.  I believe I will start by giving a round overview and how well the deck did and let anyone who is interested reply with questions on how matchups went so I can give better focused replies.  I would also like to note that a majority of my game losses were due to mistakes and me being new to this deck as well as t1 in gereral and should not be attributed to the deck.  I realized most if not all mistakes immediately after they happened.

Round 1 vs.  Gary Buda w/ Welder TriniMUD
Drop fat and win 2-0

Round 2 vs. Jeff Greene w/ O Stompy
I win 2-1

Round 3 vs. Pete Florkoski w/ Pete’s Control
I lose 1-2

Round 4 vs. Sam Antill w/ Dryad Hate
I lose 1-2

Round 5 vs. Stephen Houdlette w/TriniStax
I win 2-1

Round 6 vs. Ethan Wilfong w/ O Stompy (Cum to the Big 0)

Top 8

Quarterfinals vs. Pete Florkoski w/Pete’s Control (again)
I win 2-1

Semifinals vs. David Lawrence(Eastman) w/Hulk Smash
I win 2-1

Finals vs. Sam Antill w/ Dryad Hate
I win 2-0

Props:
Eastman for being my most entertaining and friendly opponent
Juggernaut for smashing face
Jeff(Samite Healer) for getting me into T1

Slops:
Firestorm for randomly and unexpectedly clearing my board in round 4
Null Rod for being.  Yeah that’s right just being.

Yeah I know I didn’t explain almost anything but as I was writing this I was pressed for time so I will fill in the blanks when specifics are requested.

So long as this does not conflict with the NJ Lotus tourny this sat, or the Northeast T1 championship I would show up with probably one other.
22  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Broodstarrunner on: March 09, 2004, 03:11:19 pm
Personally I do not think that this fits as well into Broodstarrunner as many of the already used cards.  If it were to fit in there what would be cut?  I tried toying with the idea, but I could not see cutting any cards other than thirst for knowledge.  IMHO, thirst is strictly better than the sword in this deck.
