Eternal Formats / Creative / [single card discussion] Taste for Mayhem
|
on: April 21, 2006, 04:44:47 am
|
Taste for Mayhem R Enchantment - Aura Enchant Creature Enchanted creature gets +2/+0. Hellbent - Enchanted creature gets an additional +2/+0 as long as you have no cards in hand.
i may be going out on a limb here, but i like this card a lot.
pros: it costs one mana and can do 4 damage a turn. what other card in magic can do that? its unheard of.
cons: its conditional. you must have a creature that attacks and survives. for maximum effect, you must empty your hand. card disadvantage if the creature dies.
i see this being effective in an extremely cheap red deck. slap this bad boy on a jackal pup/ mogg fanatic/ kird ape. clear the board with bolts, fireblast to the head and swing for 6 a turn. even if it only does 2 extra damage for you, its a shock.
flame away.

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Premium Article] Fine, Just Ban it Already
|

I would rather see the DCI unrestrict cards like Regrowth, Fact or Fiction, and Entomb one at a time for a period of 90 days to see if they are still restriction worthy than to see the DCI permanently kill more cards. If the DCI took on a policy that rotated in a restricted card every 90 days to test if it is still worthy of the title, I would be much more willing to restrict or ban certain offenders because I would at least feel that there would be a chance that the card could come off that list at a later date. Not to mention this would shake the format up and create a vintage rotation, which in itself would be kinda cool.
now thats an idea id like to see an article about. they only unrestricted fork years after it became weak because they knew twincast was coming out and it's restriction couldnt be justified. id love to see what would happen if wheel of fortune became unrestricted. nobody is using wheel of fortune these days except for some crazy euro-tps deck. you know what would happen? new decks would spring up. people would draw seven cards. fun would be had by all. it really would be like a rotation. would anybody even use 4x regrowth? i bet a new deck would spring up. i bet it wouldnt be tier 1. we should push for this.

on a proxy-related note, i just got my gamingetc P9 proxies in the mail today and they are sweet. theyre cheap as hell and the foils turned out nicer than regular magic foils. theyre only $10 for a full set plus 1x random foil. i think cards like this should be made legal as proxies; theyre sooo much nicer to look at than basic lands. theres never any question as to what that card is youre looking at.

how about a wacky idea...
REPRINT THEM!!!
Wizards would like it since they are not getting any new money off the ones they have already printed. People would still want the have the beta ones to pimp out their decks. Their collector value would still be there but reprints would enable the masses to have access to cards that are dwindling.Â
I guess the question comes to this, do the elitists who own power cards want to continue their monopoly of power as the number of type 1 players dies down, or do we make power accessable to everyone so that there will be an influx of new players and more competition. With out new players and a growing following magic will die.Â
This sounds like a nike commercial but what's more important, the game, or the value of your cards? cuz without a following or interest in the game, the value of those cards are gonna go to shit anyway.
my 2.3 cents worth
wow. thats a terrible idea. i actually wouldnt mind them re-printing them as "ultra-rares" as long they didnt print more than 1,000-2,000 of each card, and then retire them for life afterwards. this would add more cards to availiable pool and also draw a lot of new players into the vintage game. wizards would sell so many boxes if they thru these in to cases. like maybe 1 chase reprint in a every 10 cases. for the record, i prefer 5 free proxies, $1 thereafter... also, what about a BONUS for players who play with no proxies? do players who have invested in the format deserve a little something? it makes the game easier when playing with no proxies. also, its less paperwork and easier for TOs not having to keep track of proxies. maybe a random door prize given to someone from the pool of players with all-real decks. or maybe a few bucks off entry? just an idea...lemme know if it holds water.

Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Timetwister, the odd one
|
on: July 15, 2005, 05:50:25 am

"I want to start a discussion about whether Timetwister (in the opinion of the majority!) belongs in the Power Nine.
This post because of an article by Mark Rosewater, in which he states:
'Timetwister – Don't get me wrong, Timetwister is a very good card. It's restricted for a reason. But one of the nine best cards of all time? I don't think so. (All the Vintage players can let me know if I'm putting my foot in my mouth. It seems the Vintage crowd really enjoys pointing out when I do this.) The best comparison I can make to Timetwister is Brahms. Yeah, he was a good composer, but he's no Bach or Beethoven. He was just lucky enough to have his name start with the letter B. Just as Timetwister is lucky to be blue.'"
im really surprised that mark rosewater said that. he should know that the name power 9 has nothing to do with the card's power level in todays game. you cant go changing the name of something beacuse its power fluctuates witht he times. should i call a gorilla shaman the new sex monkey? nobody plays uktabi orangutan anymore. he must have ran out of things to write about.

i think if you want a cheap, competive deck that fish is the way to go. unfortunately mono black discard decks arent that strong right now with all the stuff being played out of graveyards. theres a black fish deck on the newbie forum that people seem to think is ok, but the days black suicide are long gone:( welcome back...mirrodin block brought many new strong cards to type 1 and the format is experiencing a rennaisance of sorts. time walk is still good

if BBB is too mana intensive in the deck, check out pain's reward its only 2B and does basically the same thing. its a tricky card, though. i need to actually play it and see what happens.

FCG: 0-4 - Omg this matchup was hard. Gempalms for your negators, their creatures are just better than yours and they can combo off. Jeez.
how about black night or another cheap first striker? also what about mutilate? are they killing you before turn four?
cerebal assassin: 2-0 - With the wretches and graverobbers, it is very hard for them to reanimate anything. The duresses, fiends and CotV are just icing.
Jacob Orlove's WTF: 1-4 - In theory, the matchup should be even but in reality it doesn't seem so. They have more draw than you and with vial set at 2, it makes it hard to swing with a negator having them vial out a mongrel and/or rootwaller gang (its happened more than once). Also, whispers are suboptimal in this matchup as well because it just makes the mongrel lethal that much more faster.
are you using perish in the SB? i think 2x chains of meph maindeck would help against so many decks.
oath: 1-2 - As soon as oath hits the tables, its gg. You definitely create a fast clock but if they oath up akroma, you might as well start scooping up the cards.
what about running 4x maze of ith in the SB for this matchup? would it be too hard to get 2 of them out to stop the beats? seems like it would neutralize the threat pretty easily
Sligh: 0-2 - Yea. This was bad. But I assume every deck packing burn sucks vs this deck like burning dryad and r/g beats.
Stax: 4-2 - This is definitely one of the better matchups. The only thing that sucks is big ole plats and sundering titan
my only other comment or suggestion is that night's whisper seems to be sub-optimal to me. paying two mana and two life for 1 net card gain at sorecery speed is lame.

i would recommend buying each piece one at a time. most ebay auctions for full sets on ebay are scams. pay with a credit card and get insurance. ebay all the way. if you buy on motl, use a mod as third party or dont do it at all. on ebay, ask the seller questions about the card (condition, history). if money isnt an issue for you, contact dan bock, but hes a dick.

Eternal Formats / Creative / [Single Card] Patron of the Akki
|
on: January 03, 2005, 07:42:32 pm
|
Patron of the Akki - 4RR Legendary Creature - Spirit (R) Goblin offering (You may play this card at any time you could play an instant by sacrificing a Goblin and paying the difference in mana costs between this and the sacrificed Goblin. Mana costs include color.) Whenever Patron of the Akki attacks, creatures you control get +2/0 until end of turn. 5/5
do you think this card is good enough for food chain or type 1 play? id like to try it out. if you have a warchief out and you sac a seige gang commander to bring this out, you have a 7/5, 4/2, and 3x 3/1s attacking. note: its not a goblin. even without its alternate cost, it would be very fairly costed for type 2/limited play, but i think the oppurtunity to bring it out so early or in response to losing a creature puts it over the top. im building a deck right now. thoughts?
side note: if the following rumored card is real (r_e said it is), im bringing back sligh:
~noname~ R Enchant Mountain 2: Enchanted Mountain becomes a 6/1 creature until end of turn. It's still a land. Whenever enchanted Mountain is put into a graveyard from play, return ~noname~ to your hand.

hello- i was told this is THE place for type 1 on the net. where are all the primers at? i checked the primers section of this site and i dont think it accurately represents the current metagame. there was only a few decks and they were terribly outdated. is there another section of this site (or another site) that i havent seen that has in-depth primers on current type 1 decks? any help would be great, thanks.

Eternal Formats / Creative / does Distress have a place in suicide black?
|
on: October 20, 2004, 05:53:40 pm
|
id like to discuss the merits of distress.
Card : Distress Cost : BB Type : Sorcery Power : Wording : Target player reveals his or her hand. You choose a nonland card from it. That player discards that card.
its pretty powerful, but is it comparable to hymn to tourach? is seeing their hand and targeting one card better than choosing two at random? in most situations probably not.
is it comparable to duress? its costs one black mana more for the added benefit of letting you choose a creature. i guess it could grab welders, dragons and assorted baddies, but it seems to be inferior to duress.
with powerhouses like hymn, duress, mind twist and hypnotic specter, does suicide black have room for another discard card?
if so, is distress that card?

Id like to help you guys out, but its not practical for me to travel from tampa to orlando very often. If theres anything i can help you out with, let me know. I may go to the 5th dawn pre-release.
An Idea: 5 Proxies allowed, but every time you win during a "season", your number of proxies allowed goes down by 1. Im glad to see you are so motivated to get something going.

the reasoning behind it is that the shop owner feels that everybody should be on the same playing field and that ïts supposed to be a fun game that everyone can compete in. her logic is flawed as there are many other cards to abuse. in fact, even though i have a full set of power, i think id have a much better chance of walking out in the top spot under these rules.

I live in Tampa and there is only one weekly Type 1 tournement. It is free and the winner gets 3 packs. Power Nine is banned. 5 Proxies are allowed. Where are all the Type 1 players at? Is there anything at all going on in Orlando? How about Miami? Jax?
Florida Players!! Let me know what its like in your area.
Magic was huge here back in the day, but now it seems to be big in Maine and other strange places.
LET ME KNOW IM NOT ALONE!
