1  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Omniscience on: June 22, 2012, 06:16:23 am
We already have a creature that reads "Pay 7 life: Win the game" and an enchantment that is just "Win the Game" so I don't see the point of this.  We even have an enchantment that costs half as much and makes all your spells free.  In Type 2 that creature rotates out exactly the same time as Omniscience and is a lot easier to cheat into play.  This card just makes all of your one "stage" combos 2 stage, and makes them all less consistent because you need to have multiple cards in hand after your initial combo, whether it is Show and Tell or Hypergenesis.

Obviously this can be super fun in casual, but that is about the only use I see for it.

If he was an artifact he could be good.
3  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Diabolic Revelation on: June 18, 2012, 06:53:20 am
Gifts tutors for multiple cards much better than this.Doomsday wins on the same turn if you have any cantrip or a Top.  For this much mana just Ad Nauseum and "tutor" for half your deck.
4  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: New Card: Sublime Archangel on: June 13, 2012, 04:31:59 pm
Not quite.  5 1/1s + the angel -> {4/3} + 6*{1/1} -> 10/9 flying.  The removal and chumping comments remain valid, though.
I was ignoring the Angel's actual power, because I was talking about how useful her ability is, not how good a 4/3 flyer is.  Serra Angel's power is unquestionable.
5  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: New Card: Sublime Archangel on: June 13, 2012, 04:44:15 am
If you have an army of 1/1s out, you gain 0 extra damage.  If you have even a single 2/x you are losing power.  4 mana to at best break even, at worst turn any instant removal into a Time Walk, isn't really worth it.  I just hope these become big in Standard since I run 4 Vapor Snag, 2 Dismember, and 4 Snapcaster maindeck.

If you have an army of 1/1's out, they each gain Exalted so whichever creature attacks will have a bonus for each of them.
Right.  So instead of attacking with 5 1/1s for 5 damage, I attack with 1 5/5 for 5 damage.  Except now it is easier to chump or unsummon.  Sure there are times it is nice to have a big guy with evasion, or lifelink, or who won't die to their blockers, but it is pretty situational and very vulnerable considering all the Restoration Angels and Vapor Snags in T2.

Dark Confidant, Trinket Mage, Auriok Salvagers are much more relevant than Pridemange/Goyf.  Snapcaster on a Flusterstorm is basically an uncounterable counterspell.  All of those are done with the same tribe, but I wouldn't really call Bomberman or Big Blue "tribal" even though they mainly use Humans.
8  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Cavern of Souls on: April 17, 2012, 11:50:18 am
I think I want to make Bomberman with Confidants as the draw engine running 4 of these.

Uncounterable Humans.  Auriok Salvagers, Trinket Mage, Snapcaster Mage, Dark Confidant, Delver of Secrets.  Seems good to say the least.

Magus of the Future might be fun.  UUU for a lot of potential card advantage, especially when combined with Top.  Not sure it is worth it, just throwing it out there.
12  Eternal Formats / Blue-Based Control / Re: Help - How to fight dredge with blue-based control? on: September 16, 2011, 06:35:29 am
The best way to counter someone destroying your hate card is to have a redundant one on the board, not a Force in hand since it costs 2 cards or keeping 5 mana open.  Plus it means you can draw hate more often.
13  Eternal Formats / Blue-Based Control / Re: [Deck]RND-Tezzeret on: April 30, 2010, 08:13:58 pm
@ Goober:
I believe if I recall it correctly I won all 4 of them. The thing is that it gives a window to my opponent because I drew a blank. If this card is Ponder, Fact, Regrowth or another card you prefer it helps you to advance quicker.
Yes, but advancing quicker and making your more likely to win aren't always the same thing.  As soon as you get that Twister it makes it a lot harder for your opponent to turn the game around.  That huge advantage of being able to come back even if your opponent regains control could make you win more games than that little extra advantage while you are still in control.
14  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Doomsday post RoE on: April 30, 2010, 12:14:41 pm
Twiddle works, but I think Quicksilver Amulet is a lot better because if you happen to draw it beforehand you can play it and save yourself 1 mana on the Doomsday turn.

When you are winning you don't play twister.

I've never been disappointed because I drew Time Twister, there are situations when twister is just totally awesome in getting you back or re balancing hands after somebody got a small spurt of card advantage. Not to mention it plays well with the Tendrils in the SB. In other cases it just pitches (also not to be overlooked)
I think this explains why it needs to be excluded Imho.
If a card is only good when you are behind, it needs to be reevaluted, because there is probely a card that can serve that spot better and that is not only good when you are behind (Regrowth, seccond Jace or even Ponder). I played with twister last TNV and never ever casted it in the 10 games I played, although I had it in hand for at least 4 games, the only use it had was pitching to Fow (and that is not why I play a blue card).
Just curious, how many of those 4 games did you lose?  I'm ok with having a card that makes winning games a little harder to win, and turns losing games into wins.

I just don't understand the need for this particulat narrow hate card for my fav archetype at a time when it is not the deck to beat and was pissed.
There was no need for a hate card for Stax, they made this purely as a hate card for annihilator and All is Dust.  I doubt any deck will use this against Stax.  I know if I was making a 15 card anti-Stax sideboard I wouldn't have room for even 1.
18  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Realms Uncharted on: April 14, 2010, 09:38:27 am
All of the best case scenario 6 card combinations seem really underwhelming for how many resources need to be put into it.  Why pay 3 for an artifact then 2G for a spell to be able to get wasteland recursion when 1 + 2 can get infinite turns, 2 + a land gets Iona, or 3UU gets infinite turns by itself?
19  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: New Card Discussion RoE: Lighthouse Chronologist on: March 27, 2010, 03:37:34 pm
He might just be the best multi-player creature ever.  Other than that I don't see much use.

I was the TPS.  It was a great tournament to get back into magic with after 5 years off.  Thanks for a great event.  I wish I could make next week as well but sadly I can't.  Good luck to everyone who can.

Demonic Attorney ran a list at the Myriad tournament.  Ask him about it and how he did.  Care to share?
I played Grimlong there to top8, to lose to JuggernautGO's Sphere of Resistance/Gilded Lotus beats.  I was very happy with it all day, I had 3 Xanthids maindeck, which were great to me.  I had to run it suboptimally (no Time Walk or Seal) due to the 10 proxy limit.  I am pretty sure I played against Chris during round 3, and went 2-0 just by comboing out faster.  I think I like running Chrome and Diamond in the side, to bring in against combo to help speed you up, it makes a difference.  I only played 4 out of the 6 rounds of swiss, going against Burn, somethingTog, the mirror, then CS, then IDed into top8.

I was not a fan of maindeck Colossus, which I tried there due to having 2 open slots.  It sat in my hand too often, when it could have been mana or something else helpful.
22  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: Nov 5th GP samite deck lists on: November 06, 2005, 06:03:34 pm
The tourny was awesome, and relaxing and playing Jacob's Type4 during rounds 5 and 6 was a lot of fun.

I lost in the top8 to JuggernautGO's creation.  I didn't get to see any sweet Doubling season action.

I know my Grimlong isn't optimal, since I only had Pearl I would have needed some extra proxies.

You REALLY ought to try imperial seal.
Yes I should. I just forgot about it.

-1 Windfall
+1 Imperial Seal

One of the problems with the 1 Burning Wish and a toolbox side is that when you actually need to access the stuff in the toolbox, Tutor->Wish->Answer is way too costly/slow.  Either you are under Trini/Sphere of Resistance and so that will cost too much while fighting though probable Tangle Wires/Smokestacks.  Also, in that case why not Tutor->Hurkyl's and be ready 1 turn sooner, for 2 less mana.  If you are getting Balance, you need to spend 2 or 3 turns playing these spells, which gives them ample time to find a counter or to beat you with creatures.  If you are trying to Wrath with Balance, then you should just win instead, which you often could do if you could spend 3BBWR and had a tutor.

I am also thinking about Chain of Vapor, possibly taking out Walk (to the SB, to be brought in with Colossus) or Crop Rot.  Either way, I am doing.

+2 Chain of Vapor (SB)
-1 Oxidize (SB)
-1 Brain Freeze (SB)

Off topic: could you add "mana" to the dictionary?
24  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / GrimLong on: October 18, 2005, 03:19:45 am
I know this isn't a new idea, but I want to talk about it some here.  I have always been a huge Long and variant fan, so I want to get this one moving.  I left Magic for about a year, so I might be missing something important about the meta, but here is the version I have so far.

Lands
    4 City of Brass
    4 Gemstone Mine
    1 Underground Sea
    1 Forbidden Orchard
    1 Tolarian Academy

Fast Manas
    7 SoLoMoxen
    1 Mana Crypt
    1 Mana Vault
    1 Lotus Petal
    1 Lion's Eye Diamond
    4 Dark Ritual
    2 Elvish Spirit Guide

Draw7s/Broken
    1 Yawgmoth's Will
    1 Mind's Desire
    1 Yawgmoth's Bargain
    1 Necropotence
    1 Timetwister
    1 Wheel of Fortune
    1 Tinker
    1 Memory Jar
    1 Windfall

Tutors
    1 Demonic Tutor
    1 Vampiric Tutor
    1 Mystical Tutor
    4 Grim Tutor
    1 Crop Rotation

Cheap Draw
    4 Brainstorm
    1 Ancestral Recall
1 Time Walk (Most expensive cantrip in the format)

Protection
    4 Duress
    2 Defense Grid
    1 Hurkyl's Recall

I almost forgot
    2 Tendrils of Agony

Sideboard (random for now)
    1 Darksteel Colossus
    3 Hurkyl's Recall
    2 Elvish Spirit Guide
    2 Oxidize
    1 Brain Freeze
    4 Xanthid Swarm
    2 Defense Grid

Nothing in here is revolutionary or really needs explaining, but what the hell.  2 Tendrils are just for a little protection in case something happens to one of them.  Not being able to wish for a SB Tendrils makes it a little dangerous to only run 1.  Losing to turn 1 Duress+Crypt is just annoying.  That is also why I cut the Consultation, you can scoop to it far too often for my liking.  The Defense Grids are better to find when you are in the middle of going off, and want protection for after the next draw7.  Giving your opponent an extra turn to go crazy themselves and mess with your hand or to throw out Chalice, Sphere, Trini, or some other form of hate makes the slightly better protection, and 1 less mana not worth it.  I still have them in the side because I am not too sure what to do with it now that the toolbox aspect is gone.  Long varients never could bring in too many cards, since it is so tight.  Oxidize is for Null Rod packing decks, Hurkyl's Recall is for artifact based ones.  Xanthid is worthwhile to bring in against decks in which giving them the extra turn isn't as big a problem.  The extra ESGs are great to help you beat out spheres to getting up the needed Hurkyl's mana.

I think that this is far better than Death Long for a few reasons, and makes it obsolete.  The main one is being able to run maindeck Will.  I think that was the greatest (only?) strength of Draw7 a while ago.  You can just randomly draw it in a draw 7 and that extra 3 mana is amazing.  Mystical and Vamping for it eot are strong too.  The extra maindeck tutor power also lets you get Lotus, Draw7, or Desire whenever it would be helpful, which is more often than I origonally expected.  Also, the ability to replay the tutors after a Will makes going off much easier when you just need to dump mana, tutor->Will, replay mana tutor->GG.  The life cost difference can actually matter, so I might as well mention it.  It doesn't come up in too many games, but every once and a while it helps.  The only disadvantage is the lack of being able to run a toolbox sideboard, but that was never too amazing, especially when compared to all of the bonuses the Tutors bring.  One idea I tossed around before rejecting was running a single maindeck Burning Wish, tossing Windfall to the side, and making the SB more of a toolbox.  The Grims Tutors let you grab it, making only running 1 Wish with a toolbox not a horrible idea.  I just found that Golden Wish generally isn't worth it, even when getting Balance.  I think this idea could use some more thought, because it might still be worthwhile, I am not too sure.

27  Vintage Community Discussion / Casual Forum / Tribal Wars Online Tourney on: February 11, 2005, 09:53:53 am
Here is a double tribal deck.

// Lands
    16 Island
    4 Polluted Delta
    4 Chrome Mox

// Ninjas
4 Ninja of the Deep Hours
    4 Higure, the Still Wind
    4 Walker of Secret Ways
    4 Mistblade Shinobi

//Pirates
    4 Rishadan Footpad
    4 Rishadan Airship
    4 Rishadan Brigand
    4 Rishadan Cutpurse

//Mutant Ninja Turtle Pirates
    4 Mistform Ultimus

There is synergy here, and not just the fact that Ninjas and Pirates are the most badass things ever.  Pirates are 187 creatures, and ninjutsu lets you return them to hand.  Then you can use the Walker to bounce your Ninjas to be able to bounce your Pirates some more.  SAVAGE!!!

This is why, even if black didn't have the best card drawers (Necropotence and friends) and the best tutors, you would still have to run a lot of it in any combo deck just so you would have it to cast Ritual. This is a design constraint imposed by Ritual

Yes, a design constraint made in your imaginary world without tutors and Necro.  Right now we are not in that world, so it is not an issue.

If we keep restricting everything people get angry about, we're going to eventually move along to a format where there are enough restricted, broken cards to force everyone to play the same deck, essentially a 5-color control monstrosity along the lines of Carl Winter's Revenge list, packed to bursting with restricted bombs.

Wrong.  Synergy is a good thing, not all restricted cards have great synergy.  Look at highlander, they are not always 5 color monstrosities with all the restricted cards.  Highlander is exactly the format you expect this to turn into at worse, and it isn't what you predicted.  It is actually a lot of fun, and deckbuilding is very challenging.  Instead of having to use 20 or so cards+mana you need to come up with around 50 different cards which all work together well enough.  I find that far more challenging, which equals more skill, which is great.
