1  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: 11/14/09 House of Games tourney report. Swanton Oh. on: November 18, 2009, 08:34:10 am
John, congrats on the T8.  TPS is definitely an issue for my version of Oath... I may need to stop pretending it isn't a deck  Wink

I think maybe just a tweak to the sideboard or two for the meta may be all that is required.

After reflecting I think one problem I had was that I need to remember to be a touch more agressive when mulliganing.
I have to remember I'm combo control not just control so I kept some sluggish hands where I could have probably mulliganed into something better with at least one combo piece.

Thanks for all the help and advice Matt the deck worked very well.

Congrats on the top 8, J.T.  Are you running Vault/Key in your Oath list?  I didn't see it come down in the few games we played Friday.

Yes.   Just didn't come out that way.
In fact the whole day I didn't see Vault/Key.

Game one: Tenticals for the win.

If only the rest of the world knew who how truly awful this is.

Anyway, Here's the report.
Round 1:  Angel - Artifact Aggro -
Game 1 - Fan this Hand,   Force of Will, Forbidden Orchard, Demonic Tutor, Mox Pearl, Mox Jet, Oath of Druids, Mox Sapphire.   He's good to go so I Orchard, Pearl, Jet, Sapphire.  Demonic Tutor for Time Walk (so I could either Walk after oathing next turn or possibly Force of Will to back up Oath).   Cast oath.
Him - Mountain, go
Me - Oath into Tyrant, time walk.

Game 2: Fast oath. Spell Pierce a Stax.  Pretty much same thing. Angel goes on to Top 4 so it definitely was just random lucky draws on my part.

Round 2: TPS 1-1 Justin - this guy cracks me up -nice friendly banter throughout...
Game 1 - stormed out no counter
Game 2 - Oathed into Iona on black - Game Over
Game 3 - Oath in play and no creatures/orchard.   He goes wild when we're on turns.

Round 3 - Tezzeret 2-1
Game 1 - I open with oath in hand but play it nice and slow.  He dances around a bunch of stuff drawing cards in first hands but T3 I play Oath, orchard and spell pierce his FoW.
On his turn he casts  Vault and key but no mana to activate.   Passes the turn back to me and I Oath into Iona set to blue.  I also flashback an Ancient Grudge from the yard to blow out his time vault.
Game 2 - I rip an early ancestral and get an oath out (he cast a bob) Angel on Blue, Dragon to mop up.....

Round 4 - Artifact Aggro w/ Jester's Caps and Welders  3-1 Gilberto
Game 1 - I get Oath down and ready to go next turn.  On his turn he casts Jester's Cap but has a sphere of resistance down making him one short of being able to activate it.
at the end of his turn I lim dul's vault and set my deck with a Hellkite on top followed by an Ancestral.   I oath out the hellkite rip the ancestral and attack 8.  He caps me removing my remaining two creatures and my time vault.   Hellkite finishes the job.

Game 2 - I get oath down and he has mox monkeys again.  I get Iona down set to red.
He tries to cast a welder and I back him up because Iona prevents it.   He's a bit land light with 1 mountain and two ancient tombs.  Next turn I oath into a hellkite and swing with both the hellkite and Iona for 15.  He casts duplicant on iona to remove her and create himself just a vanilla 7/7.  He drops a mountain and casts his welder now but I kill him with the hellkite next turn.

Top 8 - Against a different TPS - Randal
I don't have much in the way of notes on this but he just mauled me.  Randal's notes are better.
It was a massaccre both games.

Back to the drawing board both losses to TPS.

I'm back to Vintage after about an almost decade long hiatus so I'm learning as I go.
These Cleveland guys are nice enough to smack me around and give me proper lessons.
Thanks for dragging me out for IHOP afterward.  A pox on Don Pablo's for closing early.

A lot of the games could have easily gone the other way but I think that's what I like about vintage.
Sometimes you're the dog and sometimes you're the hydrant!

As an afterthought I cracked my Zendi packs and in one pack I saw a Foil Nissa - that got me going pretty happy so much that I didn't even notice
that the rare in it until I got home was a nice Scalding Tarn.
4  Eternal Formats / Null Rod Based Aggro / Re: BUG Fish VS GWU vs BUW Fish on: November 06, 2009, 11:13:56 am
Normally it is someone else that will state the obvious but were is null rod? I have been bitch slapped on several occasions. Why is the vault/key win condition even an option for up to date fish? Months back I came with the idea of searching for alternatives for fish other than null rod and it was shot down because of null rod. Nowadays it is even more unacceptable not to run null rod if you ask me. We are in a meta that is running MORE artifact hate and NOW you guys are discussing tutors and artifacts that 'activate'.

Nothing personal Brian, trying to extra stimulate you to motivate your choice. This goes for the rest as well.

Personally (emotionally) I think this is great, we are actually talking (finally) about alternatives other than mana denial strategies. But we can't ignore the power of null rod. So whatever you are trading it for must be explained in detail.

I think it's interesting to explore fish variants for sure but I feel as though the Null Rod is really still important.
There are two main benefits I see for the inclusion of Null Rod which still seem pertinent to the current meta.

1. Tezz, Oath w/Vault, SCV are all dangerous opponents because they can just randomly win with the vault/key/tezz combo.
Null Rod produces a blocker which must be removed before they can combo out.   This buys you time for your creatures to seal the deal.
2. You also get the benefit of shutting down many mana sources which also slows them down hopefully enough for you to land a kill.

Creatures are a slower kill condition than other options and for that reason you need to bring the game speed down to actually
get them in there.   I've seen plenty of times a lethal swing of creatures on the table rendered useless by our favorite artifact combination.
Even a goyf is a slow mover in the current environment when you compare it to the Vault/Key combo and Oath which pushes
the limit with creatures which all have haste or in the case of Iona an incredibly disruptive element to the game.

For these reasons I think it is probably a mistake to remove Null Rods (or Challice of the Void as an alternative)
when looking at current Vintage.

Now if you want to talk about a deck more or less dedicated to going all out with a Time Vault strategy that's a different matter entirely but I can't help but wonder
if you're making a mistake due to the fact that artifact hate abounds so you're potentially walking right into that with less control than Tezz and even Oath.

Just some thoughts.
I like the 'enlightened' decklist and I would be interested to play it and see how it fares against the current meta.

I know this is long after this was posted but I plan on being there for the Sanctioned Vintage on the Sunday.

this has to be a test. at this stage in seeing what was printed, in what numbers, in what editions (beta/unlimited/revised duals) they are just seeing how crazy people go for these. Hopefully, this leads to serious reprinting of power with a similar distribution in the coming year.

The power isn't going to be reprinted.

The only thing I would favor would be them allowing the CE and CEI versions to be tournament legal.
At least that would introduce some additional power into the tourney scene without reprints.

JThomas, what all did you have to do to file with the BBB? Did you give them an amount that they owe you and did you include the delta between the price you paid then and what you'd have to pay now?  I'm thinking of doing the same thing.  I'd even add the interest they're gaining on MY money.

Just go to the BBB website and they have a form to submit a case.
It's pretty self-explanatory.   I got all of TheCardKid's addresss and info off their website.

They have a spot to explain the issue and then another spot to explain the resolution you want.

See the thing is this.

TheCardKid says they're scouring the secondary market to find product.    They can't be looking too hard because
I found it on StarCityGames.com within 5 minutes of this fiasco.  So what I'm asking them to do is to make up the difference for the
footwork I did for them.

In any case file with the Better Business Bureau.
Demand not only your money back but the damages caused by the situation if you had to go to another vendor for fulfillment.
Make sure to provide negative feedback whereever possible.

Remember not to be angry or emotional but strictly provide the incontrovertable facts of the situation.

Join TheCardKid and Captain collectible boycott.
9  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: ZENDIKAR BOXES CANCELLED by cardkid on: September 28, 2009, 12:43:09 pm
I filed with the Better Business Bureau.

I chose to cancel and I'm reordering through SCG since they're legit.

They should be paying me for the additional costs I'm incurring since the damages were caused by them going into breach of contract
with Wizards.   So whether deliberate or negligence I believe that they should pay for the harm they caused me.

I would encourage everyone else to file with the BBB as well..
