1  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Pox on: September 12, 2005, 10:20:56 pm
I tend towards a prison-esque pox. chalice, crucible, and pox can apply tremendous pressure when set up right. (Granted this is for casual decks not tourney settings)

As stated before, pox burst out the gates but needs followup cards to capitalize on the momentary loss the opponent faces. I've been pondering geth's grimoire which states whenever an opponent discards a card, draw a card. This could be a good addition but bear in mind the prohibitive cost of 4 that it carries.

In general, the entire mindset around a pox deck is this: Taking a proactive response is better than a reactive one. You eliminate threats before they even become an issue.

Always nice to see other people interested in pox from time to time. Very Happy
2  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Premium Article] The Arcborn Virus on: September 08, 2005, 12:02:07 am
I expected there to be knee-jerk reactions to this new combo deck. Given the previous track record of combo decks, it isn't any new surprise that people will rush to find the fatal flaw of the deck.

Example:
Draw-7- admitted to have too much of a random factor to be relied upon
Deathlong- Too many branches of decisions
TPS- That play stalled
Doomsday- One turn pass with extreme vulnerability
meandeck tendrils- opponents card kills it

These are all of the usual cookie-cutter responses. I agree with the previously mentioned fact that decks should be tested before the theorycrafting begins. Just because it doesn't have ritual, drain,or shop doesn't mean it shouldn't be given a chance.

4  Eternal Formats / Creative / Debate/Discussion: TPS vs. Doomsday on: May 10, 2005, 07:24:07 pm
I find myself constantly wrestling with the debate of TPS vs. Doomsday. Both are combo decks which go by the philosophy that one well protected bomb is better than breaking down the barriers with many attempts that could fail. I go back and forth and can see justifications pertaining to each side.

The goal when I started this topic was to get input and help to see which deck is the "training wheels" deck. This is the same concept Rich Shay uses in his scg article on control slaver. So I present the debate question: Which of these 2 decks adds cards that already improve its good matchups and really are just "win more cards" ?

- stopping at this point we can see that doomsday may fir this criterion. It runs 4 more disruption cards than tps which could be used for more game breaking cards. The extra disruption will win some games on its own but it is unnecessary when played with skill and intuition (no not the card)

Continuing on, I looked at deck construction between the 2 decks:

Doomsday has a more streamlined approach and more definite build.

on the other hand, TPS has a list of core cards and slots for customization.

These are a sample of a list of thoughts on mind to get the discussion started.

so, which is the training wheels deck for combo: TPS or Doomsday ?

7  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Rosetta Stone Program on: May 05, 2005, 12:09:34 am
I've decided to learn a new language over the summer due to the fact that its beneficial and it would be nice being able to easily navigate through Europe. I have tried some language programs but they start to get dull and bland and the information doen't seem to stick with me.

They say that immersion is the best way to learn a language and the rosseta stone program incorporates this with absolutely no english text and rely on connotation through different teaching methods.

The one problem is that it is an expensive program since the saying goes "you get what you pay for."

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with the program or if there are any other effective language teaching methods out there.

question, I dont have premium so I would not know this but does star city protect their articles? Seems like someone could just copy and paste then let the information spread like wildfire across the internet. (Yes some people are that sadistic)

Do they at least have that program that blocks right clicks on the premium article webpage?

Knew I would screw up somewhere..

Interesting experiemnt but not very consistent. Crucipox would still probably be a good direction to go.

pox_reborn experiment 2

4 pox
2 nether spirit
4 mishra's factory
4 duress
4 hymn to tourach
4 innocent blood
4 crucible of the worlds
1 strip mine
3 wasteland
1 chrome mox
1 imperial seal
1 vampiric tutor
1 demonic tutor
1 yawgmoth's will
4 dark ritual
4 geth's grimore
17 swamp

A draw engine for pox is what I'm tinkering with now. Geth is the experiment right now. It actually makes poxing somewhat more reasonable now because you have the tools to recover land and cards.
Life ,as always, is major problem for the deck because it can easily die to burn. Creature decks are not as much of a problem with innocent blodd and recurrable creatures to defend. Basically this dies to graveyard hate and sligh  Sad

12  Vintage Community Discussion / Casual Forum / Pox_Reborn on: April 13, 2005, 09:24:26 pm
My post got deleted so heres the gist..

Made new pox deck
Did it with inspiration from mono-black workshop thread
also from crucipox and chalice pox
If you like it good for you, if not, this is the casual forum you know Wink

4 nether void
4 The abyss
4 crucible of the worlds
4 Pox
4 chains of mephistolesesises
4 dark ritual
4 night's whisper
4 mishra's factory
1 strip mine
1 necropotence
1 demonic tutor
1 vampiric tutor
1 imperial seal
1 grim tutor
1 entomb
1 yawgmoth's will
2 nether spirit
18 swamp

The deck can easily be customized to what you need it to do. The lock parts are generic ones able to handle most decks. High concentration of tutors makes up for poor card draw. Nether spirit and mishra's factory are resiliant creatures both reccurable to stave off aggro attacks.

Customization copuld include adding a wasteland component, chalice of the void, withered wretch, ect.

Feedback? Flames? address for sending spare power? post away...

15  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Any real chanes in the global metagame, Post Trinsisphere? on: April 05, 2005, 09:36:38 pm
With condsideration in mind to eudomia and whos's on first metagame scene I am thinking along the lines of TPS builds of combo to be the ones to suceed in these metas possibly. TPs has been known for its strong matchup against control and was the combo deck most capable of dealing with prison in trinisphere era.

Faster combo decks will have a hard time fighting control decks with force of will. Meandeck tendrils may be claimed to be able to fight through force of will but sometimes that costs a sacrifice in resources that gives control a window of opportunity to get 2 blue open. TPS style seems the way to go. Either gifts or draw 7 style (I'm leaning with gifts)

Sensie sensei may also be a viable alternative but I havn't tested that deck so I wouldn't know yet.
16  Eternal Formats / Creative / What Budget decks are viable in T1? on: April 02, 2005, 06:59:33 pm
Really birdcrap is the ideal choice now. All staple cards are used in other decks and everything else is commonly obtained. Everything except for moxes ect. are not proxified and everything is around 20-30 maximum (per card like duals and forces)

The loss of trinisphere makes this a very good choice and can combat the tide of control.(At least for me since I'm in norcal and the eudomias have control everywhere.)

Problem is that the metagame has too few good matchups for the deck right now.

SLaver makes togs suicide.

Crucible is still around and will kill your manabase

5/3 can try to race you with fat.

for changes to adapt you should add tinker and collosus. It allows you to quickly seal the deal in a way tog or dryad can't.

Is there any sane reason you forgot yawgmoth's will?
22  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / New B&R List on: March 01, 2005, 12:30:35 am
This is also a ray of hope for some aggro-control decks as well. While some of prison's locks are bad, trisphere was one of the cards it hated seeing the most. While a rise in combo is expected, aggro-control has a possibility too in high control metas.

24  Eternal Formats / Creative / The best aggro-control option for todays meta? on: February 28, 2005, 06:26:18 pm
I believe this deck has the potential to have continues success in the future. It has a wide array of disruptive tool to help against matches that fish and gro had some trouble against.

Combo- Null rod, wasteland, meddling mage, and various counters makes it hard for any combo to be explosive during the first few turns. As the game progresses they will need to set up one winning turn backed with disruption (possibly even heavy disruption) in order to break through. Goal in this match seems to foil combos first attempt to win then slowly capitalize by winning small in a fish manner by furthering locking them out of the game. The stacking effects of mage, null rod, and stifle make most combos stall and give you some breathing room to have big men apply pressure. The obvious role is being in control.

Aggro- Usually pure aggro will smash aggro-control but this deck seems to have a few ways to counteract it. I assume the correct role in this matchup again is to control in the beginning until you can drop undercosted fat to overwhelm the opponent. Daze can be pretty effective since aggro will seek to tap out every turn playing threats. Swords is MVP

Prison- Still seems pretty tough right now. Stax is basically immune to null rod sans moxes. An all non-basic manabase is just asking to be crucible locked out of the game. Worst of all is trinisphere which pretty much screws the deck over :/ This deck can sill make a comeback but if the workshop player capitalizes every turn things can get bleak pretty fast. The sideboard shows 11 cards to side in solely for the workshop matchup. Going first allows you to set up defenses for a daze or fow so you can surive to play a serenity or flux.

I am still testing this deck but I am liking the results. Just as long there arn't too many workshop decks around, it could reasonably compete.

Also the structure of the deck allows it to be played in 5 proxy tournaments which is always a plus. Smile
25  Eternal Formats / Creative / The best aggro-control option for todays meta? on: February 27, 2005, 10:04:36 pm
Recently, I have been examining various aggro-control decklists to see if any could be viable in today's meta. I just wanted to hear responses form others as to what they think the best one would be for today.

Lam Phan - 3rd
Bird Sh*t
1 Regrowth
3 Werebear
3 Nimble Mongoose
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Mystical Tutor
1 Time Walk
4 Brainstorm
3 Mental Note
1 Gush
3 Stifle
3 Daze
3 Misdirection
4 Force of Will
4 Swords to Plowshares
3 Null Rod
4 Meddling Mage
1 Rushing River

4 Flooded Strand
1 Mox Sapphire
3 Tundra
3 Tropical Island
4 Wasteland
1 Strip Mine
1 Library of Alexandria

Sideboard
3 Serenity
4 Energy Flux
4 Ancient Tomb
2 Old Man of the Sea
2 Seasinger

First is the recent new aggro-control deck in the last SCG. For some reason when I look at this deck, I see parts of fish and gro in there. Creatures offer utility like mana acceleration and disruption but also can grow to become threats later on. The cantrip style is chosen over fish's curiosity and standstill draw engine. The mana denial aspect is still around though which incorporates a new disrupption game to the decks gameplan unlike the original gro.(Granted the mana denial has become weaker since fish days but it still is effective in the right circumstances) The manabase is pretty vulnerable with no basics and is one point that could be a weakness ot the deck.

HOLLAND, Mich. (AP) - A man was fined $600 and put on probation for throwing an Egg McMuffin at a McDonald's restaurant manager after he said he didn't get what he ordered.

Scott Rodgers, 46, was convicted Thursday of misdemeanor assault and battery. Besides probation, he was sentenced to three days in a work program and a fine and is banned from the McDonald's.

Authorities said Rodgers and his 6-year-old son stopped to get four Egg McMuffins with ham on Oct. 9 but returned to the service window to complain that at least one of the sandwiches had sausage.

County prosecutor Craig Bunce said that when the shift manager asked him to give the sandwich back, he threw it through the window at her.

``The manager was picking egg out of her hair,'' he said.

Rodgers' attorney said he did not throw the sandwich, but rather returned it quickly.
