I've decided to learn a new language over the summer due to the fact that its beneficial and it would be nice being able to easily navigate through Europe. I have tried some language programs but they start to get dull and bland and the information doen't seem to stick with me.

They say that immersion is the best way to learn a language and the rosseta stone program incorporates this with absolutely no english text and rely on connotation through different teaching methods.

The one problem is that it is an expensive program since the saying goes "you get what you pay for."

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with the program or if there are any other effective language teaching methods out there.

From my personal experiences, if you don't have accesss to a teacher and/or penpal and/or conversation partner, it's hard to become able to "think" in the language.  You'll end up being able to build up some listening and reading comprehension, but your speaking and writing won't improve.

I've purchased the Rosetta Stone program for French.  It looks solid, but I haven't been putting in any time on it.  It really seems like the way to go IMO.  They have a guarantee that you will learn the language in 6 months, so if you're going to put the time in it's a must win situation.

The Pimsleur method is also supposed to be very good for languages.  I guess it's one of the preferred methods for teaching foreign service staff .
