A site you may want to check out is Stimhack.com. It's the main fan site for FFG's Netrunner, especially the competitive players. It has a lot of the stuff people are recommending here. 1) Articles 2) Videos and Pod/Vlogcasts 3) Playergroup finder 4) Tournament winning decklists page The forum is run on a system called Discourse. I think it will be the future of forum design. You may want to consult some webtech people if you aren't up to date on the newest technologies. It also requires a specific type of server to install. It has a TON of features for it. The most useful ones I find are the summarize function that can help condense long threads, a lack of pages, it keeps track of the last post you read in a topic, and it supports directly embedding docs, which Stimhack users use to put google docs of tournament data in. Another cool function is the built in "rating" system that it has. You can see Stimhack's list here.As you complete certain activities, you gain badges. The more you get, the more abilities you can unlock. It works under the assumtion that as people grow within the community, they will have a vested interest in helping it succeed, and are therefore granted more power. The admin can obviously veto this if they need to, but it is a great way of helping the community police itself.

The value of the high end stuff is also a magnet for crime. If we just ignore all the sad articles of decks being stolen at events, I've been seeing more stories in local news of shops being broken into and the only thing being stolen is Magic. One comic shop had a ton of expensive comics, but it's easier to liquidate Magic.
As gross is the thought is, I wouldn't be surprised if in the next 5 years we hear of quite a few more armed assualts at hobby shops where the only thing they demand is cards. Most stores dont carry a ton of cash because the costs are so expensive most people pay with credit or debit cards. At some tournaments you could get more value than hitting tellers and stores for cash. Hell, a major Vintage tournament could be better than a bank's front half, and you wouldn't have to launder the money.
At this point my cards just sit in a closet. It's not worth the risk of taking it out in public when I can play at home online. Of the few friends I have that still play Vintage, most won't bring their decks out in public. They just get together at friends' houses because it's not worth the risk. A couple do go out to local stores, but they proxy anything over $100 in their decks and keep photos of the cards on their cell to prove they own them.

Back in the day the printed some gold bordered tournament winning decks. FFG is printing the Netrunner world champion's decks with extended art. What would be awesome is if Wizards printed gold bordered Vintage champ decks that are "not legal for tournament play". Hell they could have different backs that would require opaque deck sleeves for all I care.
I've got a bunch of unhinged singles sitting in a box. I'm tempted to acetone them and make some decent proxies for our local store.

It may get a bit hairy when they try to print things with a large colorless cost. For example, Emrakul is easily costed as (15). I'm not sure how it would look to say it costs <><><><><><><><><><><><><><>. Maybe they'll add the number inside? <15>? I get that colored mana can be used to cast Emrakul and <> is colorless only, but I'm thinking that they limit themselves creating high cost spells that require all colorless unless you put the number inside the brackets, <X>, which they probably wont since they already printed a card that is 8<><>. Otherwise you end up with a stream of <>s across the top.
AFAIK, thats not how <> works. It is specifically colorless mana. <>!= , but it can count as . A forest can produce and , but not <>. Therefore Emrakul would still cost {15}, which can be paid for with colored mana. Mana costs from the past will not change; only mana production will. Sol ring will produce <><> and Mishra's Workshop will produce <><><> that can only be spent on casting artifacts.

The weird one for me is All untapped cards in play must face the controller of that card. I always play with my card text facing my opponent. I've played that way since Unlimited. I just find it makes it easier. I know what my cards do, so I don't need to see the text. I don't know if my opponent does, so why not make it easier to read? It also cuts back on my opponent asking to see the card to figure out what it does. j

Time and the cost of the inner sleeves is nothing compared to the cost of replacing your stuff. I just use the Ultra Pro ones because I don't find much advantage of the kmc stuff when it's an inner sleeve.
I also got so used to double sleeving that I double sleeve my Netrunner cards because it feels weird with just single sleeves. The first time I pulled em out at a store, the guy laughed and said I must be a Vintage player.

I find double sleeving creates an almost airtight seal the prevents anything, in particular liquids, from getting on my cards. I have cards I pulled from revised boosters back in the day that I played a lot with that have junk along the top and they were just single sleeved. You notice little things like black dots and oil fringe stains over time. It's not as noticeable with bb stuff, but wb stuff does mark over time.

Off the top of my head, I think online is the only thing that could be feasible due to the list, and this is how I would do it (and likely be branded a heretic in the process)
1)Change MTGO to a subscription service that allows access to all the cards. This would destroy the "secondary market", but would allow anyone to build anything they want. Instead of winning packs, players could win alternate art cards.
2) I've recently started playing Netrunner, and I'm really loving the LCG model. This could be implemented somehow. Allow players to buy blocks of predetermined cards for their collections at a reasonable price, and keep these cards permanently available.
3)Hold vintage tournaments, and allow players to "rent" expensive cards for the duration of that tournament, and the winner/top 4 or whatever get power.

and potentially puts 9 power into play for 4 mana. I suspect that you read this text wrongly... I did the same thing too at first. I thought it could trigger on multiple cards. If it did, I think it could work in dredge, but as it is, I think it's pretty useless.

Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Bullying in the Magic Community
|
on: March 13, 2014, 09:12:30 am

Bullying I can understand because I've been on both sides of it, and neither side made me feel good. The physical stuff was less damaging than the verbal. Bruises heal, but psychological stuff can stay around forever for some.
Referring to the reddit post, I do have great frustration with people who attend hobby events who seem unable to grasp basic presentability though. I know there is a whole range of psychological reasons why, but it frustrates me to know end sitting across from someone and having to breath shallowly because of odor, or seeing someone with clearly dirty clothes on. Thankfully, most venues are standing up to this. I've seen someone refused entry lately to a tournament and a different person at a comic convention because of odor. I felt extremely embarrassed for the last guy because it happened in front of a large group of people. It could have been handled better by pulling him aside out of the main public's view, but perhaps that will make him think twice before doing it again. Specifically regarding the plumber's butt, it also takes all of two seconds to do a pant check. If your ass is that big, you probably know that it likes to break out often enough. If you can't fix it, then clearly your mother failed to show you how to properly shop for pants. Looking at the photos, it appeared to all be men at the age of majority, not teens. Are we gonna start seeing young kids yelling at adults to pull their pants up? That would be ironic.
If I heard someone verbally abusing another player, I'd give them a warning. If they didn't knock it off, I have no problem verbally laying into them loud enough for everyone to hear. The thing about bullying is that it's no longer fun when you are the center of attention in a negative way. Sometimes all it takes is a quick reality check to remind the person that they are in a room full of stereotypical nerds pretending to be a planeswalking wizard. I've been at a few tournaments and had to do this, but it's pretty rare. Things have only gotten physical once, and, in a room full of nerds, there is usually always someone bigger than you who can physically restrain you until the owner can kick you out.

Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / What is the best way to price out a collection for liquidation?
|
on: May 07, 2013, 08:47:48 pm
|
Hey everybody,
I've been out of the hobby for quite a while, and I've finally decided to bite the bullet and sell my collection. My entire competitive vintage gaming group has been decimated due to wives/gfs, jobs, moving away, and just "growing up", and I have yet to find a group in London, Ontario who enjoys playing competitive Vintage. It's pretty much all standard here. The friends I have who still play only play EDH, and they just lend me decks when I come out to play because my entire collection is based in competitive vintage (other than my complete sets and junk commons from unlimited to saga and the mirrodin block). I stopped playing a couple of years ago due to lack of opponents, but still kept up to date with current sets and lurked on here. I used to build quite a lot of the decks you all post on here and goldfish them till I had them almost memorized, but it's obviously not the same as playing against an opponent. I haven't seen anything on here for SW Ontario in awhile, and MTGOntario still says the current set is Zendikar, so that shows you when that site was last updated, other than to put standard tournament info up. I moved to Toronto a couple of years ago to go back to college, and I've been storing my collection at my parents in London, and I haven't missed it to be honest. My mother keeps bugging me as to when I'm going to come get my cards and warhammer, and right now I don't have anywhere to put it or play with it. I debated getting back in a month or so ago, but after looking at the price of cards, I couldn't justify it. The price of the cards has really gone up across the board. I own most of the "classic" staples, but the new staples (jace, thoughtseize, zendikar fetches) and even some older stuff (show and tell, off color onslaught fetches) have skyrocketed over the last couple of years. Even weird cards I picked up for "fun" decks back in the day, like shallow grave, are going for more than I would have expected. I looked into legacy, but it would cost me more money to "downgrade" to that than to stay in vintage due to cards like Lions Eye Diamond, which I only have 1 of in my Mirage complete set. It's crappy that it has priced me out of owning the cardboard I need to make myself competitive again, but that also means my collection has increased a bunch as well. When I think about it, even if I wanted to fork out the money, I really don't have anywhere to play anyways, so what would be the point?
Anyways... to the point. I talked to a local store here, and they can't afford to buy my collection outright, but they are willing to sell it on consignment. I was thinking of giving them 10%. Does that seem fair? Where would be the best place to determine what to price my cards at? I've looked around, and this is what I've seen. MOTL keeps a database of scraped ebay prices, but they seem low due to them not being able to take into account 1)varying grades of cards and 2)shipping costs which purchasers take into account when buying online. SCG is a reputable seller and a cornerstone, but I think that gives them the ability to charge a bit more than the average store would get away with. Findmagiccards.com doesn't update enough, so the prices on there don't reflect what the stores are actually selling them for. How do you guys determine what value to put on your cards? I know Scrye and Inquest are long gone, but is Beckett still putting out a MTG magazine? I have a bunch of those and they didn't seem too bad.
I've also got some random stuff, like a bunch of still in box hobbyjapan tokens (zombie, wurm, centaur, dragon, etc), a couple of tshirts from wotc game center, old official binders, and other stuff I've accumulated over the years. I think I'll keep my art prints because I like them and can display them, but some of these things I have never seen actually sold, or they've been MIA on the web for awhile. SCG and Troll and Toad have a few of the things listed, but since they've been OOS for so long, the prices haven't been updated in years. Is there a forum you guys know of that deals in this kind of magic merch? Should I take photos of em and list em on the collectibles forum here and let people give me some numbers?
Is there still much of an online scene now that cockatrice was taken offline for the most part? I don't think I'll ever be able to get of the game totally as I'm always thinking of new ideas, and I'm still interested in the mental exercise I get theorizing. As it is, I could keep some of my junk cards that I won't be able to get rid of and just throw paper in front to goldfish if I'm jonesin for a fix.
I'm going home to visit this week, so I'd like to scan in my lotus in to get some feedback on what I should price it at if that's okay with the mods. I've had it for awhile and it's kind of beat, so I have no idea where to even begin with it.
I know there is no selling allowed on the boards, and I am not looking for any solicitations of purchase. I'm not even entertaining sales unless you can pick it up in person as I've been burned from online selling in the past and can't afford to risk it, especially with my power and pillars. I just need some help as I'm out of the loop on this stuff, and I kind of feel overwhelmed and don't know where to begin. I think it's kind of a waste to have my stuff sitting in boxes in my parents' basement when other people could be getting enjoyment out of it. That and I could use the money to pay a large chunk of my tuition and maybe upgrade my rig with a SSD, new video card and buy a cintiq.
I appreciate any help the collective can offer, and keep up the amazing dialogs. I haven't touched a card in a couple of years, but I still lurk on here every day because it's such a cool place to be.
Cheers,
Josh

Memory's Journey.
It allows you to stack the demon's trigger and throw something that's been milled back into your library to tutor for. If it's your first demon, you'll usually just tutor up the time walk, unless it got milled. But if it's a second or third demon, or if the first oath trigger killed a substantial part of your library, you want to go for a yawg's will and play a ton of stuff out of your yard. Sometimes you get lucky and have the key vault combo just sitting there, along with a decent amount of jewelry to cast it. Sometimes the Will is in your hand, and you can use it to grab the jewelry and odd draw spell that's been binned. If MJ was a blessing, you wouldn't be able to do that.

The card in the first issue will be Treasure Hunt. sourceExaminer also confirms that "Issue #2 of IDW's Magic: the Gathering comic book series will feature Faithless Looting, an exclusive preview card from Wizards of the Coast's upcoming expert Magic: the Gathering expansion set Dark Ascension." I'm assuming the card in Issue 3 will be vampire related as that is what is on the front cover, and so far the first 2 cards pieces of art are just the covers to the comics. j

Only in standard could I see that combo work. Too much mana anywhere else. Best strategy I can think of would be to weld the assembly in EOT, but that would make it a 3 color requirement with the sieve.
Except Time Sieve isnt legal in standard. Whoops. Thought it was in the last set. Relegated to kitchen table playing in that case.

Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Re: Transmute Artifact + Su-Chi
|
on: October 30, 2010, 07:23:18 pm
|
Transmute Artifact Transmute Artifact includes a word not found on any other printed Magic card: "fails." This gives it some street cred for being unique and qualifies it for several Internet blogs, but makes figuring out what this card is supposed to do without context that much more challenging. Sacrificing the artifact used to be part of the cost, but that doesn't jive with what we believe the intent of the printed wording was. You shouldn't have to sacrifice the artifact if Transmute Artifact is countered, for example. However, we also believe that searching your library should be contingent upon the sacrifice. And we're taking "fail" to mean the searched-for artifact card never makes it onto the battlefield if you have to pay the difference and don't. Rules management is often more art than science.
New wording Sacrifice an artifact. If you do, search your library for an artifact card. If that card's converted mana cost is less than or equal to the sacrificed artifact's converted mana cost, put it onto the battlefield. It it's greater, you may pay {oX}, where X is the difference. If you do, put it onto the battlefield. If you don't, put it into its owner's graveyard. Then shuffle your library.

Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / 2 Vigor and 1 Triskelion
|
on: July 17, 2010, 07:41:18 pm
|
Vigor's ability:
If damage would be dealt to a creature you control other than Vigor, prevent that damage. Put a +1/+1 counter on that creature for each 1 damage prevented this way.
I'm assuming everyone knows what Triskelion does.
With 2 Vigors in play, could the Triskelion hit itself an arbitrarily large number of times to give it tons of counters? I guess what it comes down to is if both vigors will give it counters, or only the one you choose to have prevent the dammage.
Cheers,
j

You are aware that this general is banned on the official banned list, right? That really only matters in untrusted games, though; if members of your playgroup don't mind him, go bonkers. I know he warped the living beejesus out of my metagame. But there's no doubting his raw power and the happiness he gives to Timmys.
You are aware that you necro'd a thread from Dec 2009, right? For a period of time, Rof was taken off the banned list, and was just recently put back on with the newest B/R announcements. j
