1  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Suggestions for Improving your Game on: November 15, 2009, 03:48:52 pm
Secondly, always be aware of the game state, your surroundings, and your opponent's actions.  In other words, watch out for opponents trying to cheat you.
If you feel that your opponent is playing too slowly, politely ask them "could you please play a little faster?".  They usually will.  However, if they continue to play too slowly, simply call a judge and ask them "could you please watch for slow play?".  That will either get your opponent moving, or get them warnings/game losses for slow play.

Man I hate that.  I consider it unsportsmanlike conduct.  I had it happen in a PTQ final round where I was 4-3 and basically playing for prizes at that point but my opponent had played 3 other players whom I knew personally and I had an entire group rooting for me.  game 1 I dredged out the win turn 2 and chumped his 2 goyfs game 2 with the combo golgari thug/narcomoeba and the guy behind a game still played incredibly slow and annoying but luckily i pulled it out in the last few minutes.
This is a great board and I also play very format I can just love the game and want to play in every viable tournament i can get to.

Is it unsportsmanlike when someone doesn't diliberately do this intentionally? It might be a double edged sword on both sides. I might actually go so far as to consider someone a jerk for calling a judge on me when I'm trying to make a crucial play decision.
2  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Wg Parfait on: November 15, 2009, 03:42:35 pm
I wouldn't run Lotus Vale it's too slow and vulnerable.

Have you considered Empyrial Plate in conjunction with Land Tax? It makes your creatures much beefier.

Throw in a Flyer like White Shield Crusader to equip a Plate on and you have a non-Snuff Outable, non-D. Blastable among other things, like beast with evasion.
3  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Bitter Ordeal - a lobotomy deck on: November 15, 2009, 03:19:31 pm
Why not play Mana Drain so that you can accelerate into a J. Cap or Sacrament?

cause thats a hit or miss for sac, and it works well as mono black. ive made a few changes to it since the last post of the list, being kinda lazy atm to post it.

A counterspell that you no longer take mana burn from is a "hit or miss"?

Why don't you just run Haunting Echoes instead of all of these inferior cards?

5  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Sphinx of Jwar Isle and Predict in Vintage (with a sample deck pre-Zendikar) on: October 19, 2009, 01:19:10 pm
This build I presented isn't designed to win as soon as possible, it's a slow control deck similiar to MUC in the sense that, you basically want to win at your leisure after establishing board control.

The main role that this deck plays, is to get a Nevinyrral's Disk out ASAP, constantly recur it with Ruins when necessary, and get down a beater after generating a good amount of card advantage once your opponent is in a state of submission. Any other threats that I feel that Disk cannot deal with are met with counterspells. This deck does not need to win fast and it wasn't designed to, making a six mana shroud creature appropriate to run.

I initially wanted all artifact creatures so that I could recur them with Academy Ruins if one ever got caught within the grasp of a Nevinyrral's Disk, but the synergy that Sphinx has with the theme of the deck makes it an auto-include in my opinion regardless.
6  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Leyline/Helm combo - Input needed on: October 19, 2009, 10:48:57 am

I would love to understand why this combo doesn't see more play - or why it's not part of a top deck.

Becuase the decks that Leyline of the Void is good against wins regardless of playing Helm of Obedience?
7  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: [Theory] Active vs. Reactive on: October 19, 2009, 10:40:35 am
Active? Don't you mean Proactive? MTGFan, you're discussing something everyone already knows. What's the point?
8  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Painter's Maze on: October 19, 2009, 10:34:14 am
Play this card.

And Rule of Law for a softlock.
9  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Sphinx of Jwar Isle and Predict in Vintage (with a sample deck pre-Zendikar) on: October 19, 2009, 10:03:32 am
Sphinx is an effective beater with shroud, the actual Predict combo is just a bonus.

Card advantage wins games and so does redundancy when regarding combos.

C'mon guys, let's get a serious discussion going here.

This deck plays extremely smoothly. The mana acceleration as well as library manipulation that Soldevi Excavations provides are two significant bonuses. Mana Drain allows you to cast a large percentage of your deck. Now that mana burn no longer exists this deck has a definite edge. The main focus of the deck is Nevinyrral's Disk, which can singelhandedly swing games in your favor.

This deck is pretty cut and dry without need of much explanation. It actually plays pretty consistently and doesn't rely on any specific combo just synergistic cards that work well together.

You guys must not understand that I had this deck built before Sphinx even saw print.
10  Eternal Formats / Creative / Sphinx of Jwar Isle and Predict in Vintage (with a sample deck pre-Zendikar) on: October 19, 2009, 08:42:50 am
I originally concieved a monoblue control like deck that abused Soldevi Excavations and Predict and I was pretty satisfied with the results.

I named the deck Blueberry Pinto and the original list looked like this. Note that this was before Sphinx was printed.

// Lands
    2  Tolaria West
    1  Tolarian Academy
    3  Soldevi Excavations
    1  Strip Mine
    2  Wasteland
    1  Library of Alexandria
    7  Island
    1  Academy Ruins

// Creatures
    1  Masticore
    4  Esperzoa

// Spells
    4  Teferi's Response
    1  Time Walk
    1  Brainstorm
    1  Ponder
    1  Merchant Scroll
    4  Predict
    4  Force of Will
    1  Ancestral Recall
    4  Nevinyrral's Disk
    1  Chain of Vapor
    1  Hatching Plans
    4  Mana Drain
    2  Crucible of Worlds
    1  Mox Jet
    1 [JGC] Sol Ring
    1  Mox Ruby
    1  Mox Emerald
    1  Mox Sapphire
    1  Mox Pearl
    1  Black Lotus
    1  Mana Crypt

// Sideboard
SB: 4  Tormod's Crypt
SB: 4  Relic of Progenitus
SB: 3  Razormane Masticore
SB: 2  Echoing Truth
SB: 2  Wipe Away

The gameplan was to basically generate massive amounts of card advantage with Predict and Soldevi Excavations as well as Teferi's Response, which basically added to the card advantage as well as protected Excavations itself. Then this card got printed and became an auto-include.

I thought to myself how good this card was with Predict and I instantly threw in 2 copies of it in the list.

The current list basically looks like

-1 Masticore
-1 Esperzoa

+2 Sphinx of Jwar Isle

I think after printing this card Predict might actually be a staple in Vintage, what do you guys think?

P.S. - Sorry for the underlines this forum isn't letting me type properly and is going ballistic on me.

11  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Swans in Vintage? on: June 27, 2009, 03:20:03 pm
Here's my list, it's not complete by any means and hasn't been tested very much but so far the build works at least. You either oath up or drain into the swans and then tutor for Chain of Plasma and fill your hand and graveyard with useful things and go off. I think it may need more artifact mana and I think adding Manamorphose would be a good idea here but I don't know what to cut. Also crop rotation into Forbidden Orchard would be nice. Here's the list.

Lands: 20
4 Volcanic Island
4 Underground Sea
4 Polluted Delta
4 Tropical Island
4 Forbidden Orchard

Creatures: 2
Swans of Bryn Argoll

Other spells:
3 Chain of Plasma
1 Black Lotus
1 Fastbond
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Yawgmoth's Will
1 Tendrils of Agony
4 Mana Drain
1 Mystical Tutor
1 Rebuild
1 Brainstorm
1 Ancestral Recall
4 Force of Will
5 Moxen
2 Duress
3 Intuition
1 Krosan Reclamation
4 Oath of Druids
1 Lightning Bolt
1 Time Walk

//Sideboard:
1 Tendrils of Agony
2 Lightning Bolt (extra draw and also kills goyfs and such)
1 Chain of Vapor
2 Shattering Spree
4 Tormod's Crypt
2 Pyroclasm (against fish and it draws you cards with swans out)
1 Progenitus
2 Crucible of Worlds  (against strip mine strategies)

Why are you not running Recoup in this list? Seems like a nice plan to Recoup a Yawg Win to cast a Chain of Plasma in your yard, after Oathing out a Swan. That being said, I'd probably cut the Swan count to 1.
12  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: [Deck] Shallow Grave Storm on: June 27, 2009, 03:10:38 pm
Lurker, Have you considered Last Rites just in case you draw a Magus in your opening hand? You might benefit from running Frantic Search as well.
13  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: BG Crop Rotation Aggro on: June 27, 2009, 03:01:27 pm
Not that Terravore is a bad idea at all,
but in case people haven't noticed, playing Terravore makes Relic of Progenitus super duper good against this deck,
since instead of just clearing the graveyard and shrinking the Goyfs or Knights,
it straight up kills a beater you spent three mana on.
Just something to consider.

Doesn't Null Rod stop Relics though?
14  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Shop Rotation (First Thoughts) on: June 19, 2009, 09:40:09 pm
here is what I came up with. Screw spheres.

The idea is that crucible is broken with entomb and crop rotation unrest. So I'm trying to maximize ways to get crucible into play. The first is the obvious play big mana like workshop. In addition I think some number of Monoliths is a must since it hits the magic number 3 -> crucible. Any number of plays will get you there turn 1.

Second way to get crucible into play would be with welder. t1 welder, t2 entomb will get you there. T1 welder, t2 crop for bazaar will get you on your way. Portal and Razormain are there for corner cases where you aren't ready to set up the lock, but you have an active welder.

Library was the best way I found to draw cards in green for less then 2 mana. I considered Dark Con since its less life lost, but I liked that I could draw 4 cards in the same amount of time it took to draw 2 cards. Sure, it takes a lot of life, but if you can set up any of the combos, who cares? Also, its a "may" clause, so once you get low on life you can just skip the extra draws unlike confidant.

Fastbond combo should be obvious with crucible. Chasm makes fastbond painless, and you just cycle b-rings for the win. You can do a number of other things as well depending on your graveyard/hand.

Anyways, just throwing some ideas out there. I was goldfishing this for a bit, and the core idea seemed really powerful. I think I can work on the mana counts for sure though. This deck doesn't have a high CC, and I'm not runing spheres, so I could prob lose some off color moxen. I could also prob knock off 1 or two riftstone portals, but they make casting all the green spells so much easier. That would add room for more threat density. Figure at least 2/3 slots open there. Not sure what to put in. Maybe null rod? Trying to think of a cheap artifact/land based threat that might synergize with the deck. Perhaps the addition of squee to facilitate bazaar and portal.

**flash edit
Oh man, reading the post above, I forgot balance! between 8  5 color lands and riftstone it shouldn't be hard to get 1W. And on Eastman's suggestion in the new CA thread I think I'd add an ancient grudge as well. MMM, entomb is so good.

// Deck file for Magic Workstation

// Mana
    4 City of Brass
    4 Gemstone Mine
    4 Mishra's Workshop
    4 Riftstone Portal
    2 Simian Spirit Guide
    1 Black Lotus
    2 Grim Monolith
    1 Mana Crypt
    1 Mana Vault
    1 Mox Emerald
    1 Mox Jet
    1 Mox Pearl
    1 Mox Ruby
    1 Mox Sapphire
    1 Sol Ring
    1 Tolarian Academy

// Draw & Search
    3 Bazaar of Baghdad
    3 Sylvan Library
    4 Entomb
    4 Crop Rotation

// Creatures
    4 Goblin Welder
    1 Razormane Masticore

// Fastbond Combo

//Strip Lock Combo
    4 Crucible of Worlds

Very solid list. What are the 2 Grim Monoliths for?
15  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Will Neo Academy Make A Comeback? on: June 19, 2009, 09:19:28 pm
The main thing I like about the deck is that it's very explosive. It's first turn kill ratio is very high and I think that might be it's biggest strength. I've played against Neo Academy Vintage decks when Tendrils was legal and it often goldfished on the first turn whenever I faced it. I'm not saying that makes it viable, I'm just pointing out one of it's major upsides.

On another note, Mind Over Matter might just be the card to push it over the edge, though, and can easily replace Candelabra of Tawnos. I think running MoM might be a positive thing since not only is it a reusable Candelabra but it's also pitchable to FoW.
16  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Will Neo Academy Make A Comeback? on: June 19, 2009, 05:13:49 pm
Originally Neo-Academy also had to rely on Capsize and a couple other cards. I'm not going to look up the original lists but back in the day to get things going you needed about 7 cards. At any rate what makes you think this is better than a deck like TPS?

I have no clue whether Neo Academy can be better or even as good as TPS, I haven't extensively tested either to come to a conclusion. Do you have any suggestions on how to make this deck better in certain areas where TPS is lacking?
17  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Shop Rotation (First Thoughts) on: June 19, 2009, 05:09:29 pm
-4 Tangle Wire (Just don't seem necessary)
-1 Mystical Tutor (Slow

+1 Crucible of Worlds (where was this?  That's like playing only three Flashes)
+1 Tolarian Academy
+1 Thirst for Knowledge
+2 Something

But my initial thoughts tended me more towards something along these lines:

4 Tarmogoyf
3 Terravore

4 Crop Rotation
4 Crucible of Worlds
4 Null Rod
4 Sphere of Resistance
4 Root Maze
4 Thorn of Amethyst
1 Trinisphere

6 Forest
4 Ancient Tomb
4 Mishra's Factory
4 Mishra's Workshop
4 Wasteland
1 Black Lotus
1 Mana Crypt
1 Mana Vault
1 Mox Emerald
1 Sol Ring
1 Strip Mine

Initial thoughts: I'd much rather play something traditional, with an easier Strip-lock, no slow blue moving parts, but instead a heavier creature base that can wreck Remora, and a heavier lock base that targets Vault, which, if you think it's already everywhere, is going to be EVERYWHERE in the next couple of months, yeah?

Dare to run Sundering Titan in something like this?  Wink
18  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Rasputin Oath on: June 19, 2009, 05:06:38 pm
Have you thought about running a second Rasputin MD just in case things don't go as planned with the first one? You would need away to sac your first Rasputin before Oathing though. It might be too much of a pain.

Shouldn't Krosan Reclamation prevent this from happening?
19  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: [Deck] Shallow Grave Storm on: June 19, 2009, 05:02:10 pm
Well, Lurker, you also have to consider that every GY based deck, that's already established, flat out wins. Having a Draw-7 for 3 is nice, but it doesn't flat out win you the game. It's also a two card combo for 3 mana that simply results in a Draw-7. I'm glad you think it's a fun deck and I hope you're satisfied with it. I agree that it indeed looks like a fun deck to play.
20  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: [Deck] Shallow Grave Storm on: June 19, 2009, 04:46:18 pm
Why play this combo deck over any other deck that just flatout out wins without having to rely on the GY? The deck susceptible to Tormod's Crypt, Leyline of the Void, Pithing Needle, etc. Why play this over the Worldgorger Dragon combo, that just flat out wins?
21  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Will Neo Academy Make A Comeback? on: June 19, 2009, 04:33:00 pm
How is Neo Academy a 7 card combo? I see only Academy, Rotation, Candelabra, and a kill card as the main components. That's actually a 3 card combo when analyzed properly. I'd maybe run something like this.

4 Underground Sea
4 Tropical Island
2 Polluted Delta
2 Flooded Strand
1 Tolarian Academy
3 City of Brass
5 Moxen
1 Lotus
1 Mana Crypt
1 Mana Vault
4 Mox Diamond
(28)

4 Candelabra of Tawnos
4 Crop Rotation
4 Force of Will
1 Brainstorm
1 Ponder
1 Merchant Scroll
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Timetwister
1-2 Tendrils of Agony
3-4 Chromatic Sphere
3 Intuiton
4 Accumulated Knowledge
1 Mind's Desire
1 Yawgmoth's Will
1 Demonic Tutor

Sideboard:
4 Thoughtseize
4 Pithing Needle
(7 Meta Slots)

That's just a rough list of what I would probably run but I'd definitely would start testing a list like this, to start things off.
22  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Shop Rotation (First Thoughts) on: June 19, 2009, 12:17:46 pm
I'd suggest Elvish Spirit Guide, since it seems like the deck lacks green mana sources, it also helps you cast stuff if all you're stuck with is Ancient Tombs and no Workshop. Another words, 3 and 4 seem to be the mana amount this decks wants to be seeing and ESG helps with that.
23  Eternal Formats / Creative / Will Neo Academy Make A Comeback? on: June 19, 2009, 09:12:15 am
I assume everyone is fully aware of Crop Rotation being unrestricted, that being said, does anyone agree that Tolarian Academy decks might see significantly more play due to the unrestriction of Crop Rotation? Neo Academy was a strong deck, but can it still compete in the current meta? Let me hear your thoughts.
24  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Nether Void deck on a budget - As good as it used to be? on: May 27, 2009, 09:29:41 am
I came up with B/G Nether Void over two years ago before Lurker101 and just recently went public with my list, but for Legacy.

The list can be found here. http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/showthread.php?t=154156

My AIM username is "Cavius The Great".  And unlilke Lurker101, I actually own 4 English Nether Void and have actually had first hand experience with it in tournaments.  Wink

I totally didn't see the berserk in the sb, did see the cunning wishes though - 3 is probably a good idea, I'd add a zuran orb in place of one.

I think adding a Zuran Orb might be a good idea. I also ran 3 Cunning Wish in Babycakes, so I actually have no idea why I chose to run 4.  Wink

I'm not a mathmatician, but I think mathematically, you actually net more "grow" with a Coatl than a Psychatog. Tog is restricted to having 7 cards in your hand while Coatl is not. So whenever cards go into the graveyard with Tog, it's 1/2 as efficient when compared to Coatl. Plus the +1/+1 counters on the snake being permanent gives it a major edge over Tog.
26  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Lorescale Coatl Gro In Vintage on: April 26, 2009, 02:10:02 pm
I think that Lorescale Coatl is a 100 times better than Psychatog. First of all, the +1/+1 counters are permanent, He isn't graveyard dependant (Ground Seal does nothing, etc.), He gets bigger regardless even at every draw step, and he grows alot more faster than a Tog would.

@Berserk -  Did you not check my SB and the 4 Cunning Wishes main?

@The Draw-7's - It should be heavily in your favor if you cast one with a Coatl in play then declare your attack phase. I was thinking of adding more counters to alleviate this problem since FoW might not be enough, though I think that it should be.
27  Eternal Formats / Creative / Lorescale Coatl Gro In Vintage on: April 26, 2009, 10:34:15 am
I'm amazed at how powerful Lorescale Coatl can be. For reference, he's a new Alara Reborn card that cost 1UG, is a 2/2 and gets  permanent +1/+1 counter whenever you draw a card. I've seen threads on breaking the card in Legacy, but I feel it's true home would be in Vintage. I also have a lot of insight becuase I was one of the first people to abuse Forgotten Ancient a.k.a. Babycakes in Vintage. I think Vintage might be the best place for this serpent becuase of the fact that Draw-7's are legal in the format. Here's a rough list of what I would play in Vintage.

4 Lorescale Coatl
4 Vedalken Heretic
3 Gorrilla Shaman
3 Shadowmage Infiltrator
1 Brainstorm
1 Ponder
1 Gush
1 Merchant Scroll
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Timetwister
1 Wheel of Fortune
1 Yawgmoth's Will
4 Force of Will
4 Cunning Wish
5 Moxen
1 Lotus
3 Crucible of Worlds
1 Mox Diamond
1 Fastbond
3 Wasteland
1 Strip Mine
1 Library of Alexandria
4 Polluted Delta
2 Horizon Canopy
3 Tropical Island
3 Underground Sea
2 Volcanic Island

Sideboard:
1 Berserk
1 Krosan Grip
1 Coffin Purge
1 Sudden Shock
1 Diabolic Edict
1 Misdirection
1 Commandeer
1 Path to Exile
1 Lightning Helix
3 Relic of Progenitus
3 Pernicious Deed

This is just a rough draft and untested. I think Lorescale has alot of potential in Vintage. I also think that Timetwister might actually go up in value becuase of the printing of this little guy. This thread is just food for thought. I just wanted to get the idea out there so that the community can brainstorm a bit on how to best abuse this card. Thanks ahead of time for your response.

And last but not least! The door prize to this tournament will be a NM Alpha Lich signed by your's truly, Cavius The Great. What better way to earn a piece of Magic history! Jokes aside, this is seriously the door prize.  Wink

Well, I hope you guys will support Legacy in the Boston area and this tournament may be just the thing to stimulate it. Let me know if I'm missing any details and I hope to see you there!  Very Happy
