1  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: URBana Fish--The Solution to the metagame on: July 03, 2007, 03:52:55 pm
Hi!

I was just wondering about something. I'm getting ready to play my patented U/R fish deck on saturday at a big tourney (triple power) and was wondering if this version is running black only for duress and Bob?

I know it has leyline in the sideboard, but you don't usually expect to hardcast it anyways. With force of will and other high casting cost cards in this deck is Bob really worth it for card draw?

I was also wondering why no one's running standstill anymore, is there a specific reason or it's easier to splash a third colour for Bob?

Thanks!

Hi!

I haven't really posted on this website in a long time. The truth is that I haven't played type 1 in over 2 years now, to be more specific my last type 1 tourney was on December 12th, 2005. At that time my rating was 1688 due to making top 8 at 3 of the last 6 type 1 tourneys I played. To make a long story short the deck that I've been playing before that gave me the mixed results and my 3 top 8ths has been U/R fish.

The point I'm trying to get to is that i have a 10 proxy, 3 power type 1 tourney coming up in 2 weeks and I believe that this is the best chance for me to come out of my self imposed "retirement" and play type 1 again. The problem is that I don't know exactly what the latest type 1 decks that most people play are as well as what changes I need to make to my type 1 fish deck. This is the only deck that I have and since it's been pretty good to me before I believe that with the right changes I have a good chance of making top 8 again. The tourney I'll be playing will have at least 50 players and almost all of the hardcore type 1 players.

Some of my questions regarding the new fish lists have to do with seeing that people play 4 Dazes maindeck now, also they play only 17-18 lands (my deck has 21) and they don't play standstill anymore? They also seem to be playing chalice of the void maindeck which again i'm not sure how this works in a fish decks since most of our plays are 1 to cast and 2 to cast.

My deck still has spiketail hatchling as well as cloud of faeries since i haven't changed it in the last 2 years, i'm wondering why people don't play that anymore? Also why do people play echoing truth as the bounce spell of choice instead of chain of vapor and why are people not running rack & ruin in the sideboard? (i'm aware that u/w can't really run it, but i was wondering if the u/r decks run it or not?).

Anyways, i'll be happy with any info I can receive since I'd like to change the deck to give me the best chance at the tourney in 2 weeks.

Thanks!

Hi!

Just wanted to add my secret tech in dealing with colossus (which i didn't really get to use since i didn't play against a deck with colossus and couldn't beat patronvoidmage to make it to top 4 and face the colossus deck) is magus of the unseen.

I opted not to play sigil of sleep in my sideboard, and played 2 maguses instead. Also, one card that many people may have overlooked when trying to deal with a darksteel colossus is none other than... sculpting steel. It's a 3 mana for a colossus, sure it doesn't kill your opponent's colossus, but for 3 mana you can get an indestructable colossus yourself to deal with his, or trade blows. It's only 3 mana, so it's playable in fish and it's much easier to resolve too, and it's also good in case you want to sculpt a triskelion, platinum angel or who knows what else, even a crucible, if your opponent has one and you haven't drawn yours.

So, just to keep in  mind, 2-3 sculpting steels in the sideboard may not be a bad idea for fish.

p.s. I was the guy who lost to patronvoidmage in top 8, even though i won game 1 while holding 3 null rods in my hand the whole game.  Very Happy
4  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Annul in U/R Fish on: September 06, 2004, 11:57:30 am
Keeping the opponent's mana down is important when playing fish, that's why i always stifle their fetchland if i can, and i do sideboard 2 annuls. I didn't get a chance to use them, since i didn't draw them in the match-ups that i sided them in, but i'll still keep them in the sideboard, i believe they're very good since they're a hard counter.

It's important to counter the opponent's artifacts/enchantments especially when everyone plays with crucible these days.  Very Happy
