1  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Tournament Results and the Impact of Hulk Flash on: May 07, 2007, 12:43:00 pm
So I decided to use the resources at hand both here and at the Source to compile tournament results from this past weekend (post-Hulk Flash), and the weekend before it's discovery to the entire Legacy-playing world. If anyone has any additional information they'd like to share, PM me or post it here. Anyway, it's a valuable tool for metagaming, in any case.

Can anyone give more info about the rest of the top 8? I'm trying to compile some stats from last week's events to this week's to show the effects of Flash on the metagame. Any help would be wonderful!

4  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: GPT Blue Bell - Top 8 on: May 01, 2007, 05:29:18 pm
Well, I can't give you all the exact decklists, but I can give you the highlights that I saw...

Rec-Sur: A five color deck with a lot of one-ofs, Cabal Therapies, and Sliver Queen. He also had an alternate win with Burning Wish for Coalition Victory. There are about 40+ tally marks on it from people who lost that way.

Landstill: This deck looked fairly stock for the BHWC deck, using Pernicious Deed, StP, Stifles, Crucibles, and manlands

Iggy Pop: Fairly mainstream build with an interesting addition in the form of a mana base that uses Ancient Tombs and 3+ USeas. Also, I'm fairly certain he splashed white for Chants in the board.

BDW: Bolt, Chain Lightning, Fireblast, Cursed Scroll, Jotun Grunt are the only cards I remember seeing--other than the SB Null Rod

Goblins: All I know is that it was mono-red

R/G Belcher: Mirri's Guile, lots of accel, one land, and no Warrens

R/G/b Belcher: A lot like the new CRET Belcher that did so well in Canada

The last deck I actually do know since I built it for my friend who piloted it to the T8. I'm only posting it for ridiculousness value. In reality, I'm fairly certain it was a fluke:

B/W Junk

4 Dark Confidant
4 Ravenous Rats
3 Stonecloaker
2 Jotun Grunt
2 Withered Wretch
1 Hypnotic Specter

4 Duress
4 Swords to Plowshares
4 Dark Ritual
4 Hymn to Tourach
3 Cabal Therapy
3 Funeral Charm
2 Umezawa's Jitte

2 Wasteland
2 Orzhov Basilica
10 Swamp
6 Plains

SB:
3 Winter Orb
3 Engineered Plague
2 Perish
2 Disenchant
2 Seal of Cleansing
2 Massacre
1 Damnation

So, I test/play Iggy Pop for 6 months and do horrendously and take my buddy, who just goes on a whim, build him a crappy deck, and watch him T8. If I weren't so stunned, I might have been pissed!
5  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / GPT Blue Bell - Top 8 on: April 29, 2007, 07:28:04 pm
Trekked out to Blue Bell this morning to play five rounds and scrub out with a 2-3 record. Happens, I guess. Anyway, you're here for the results.

25 players

Top 8:

Rec-Sur defeats B/W discard
Boros Deck Wins defeats GRb Belcher
UWbg Landstill defeats GR Belcher
Iggy Pop defeats Goblins

Didn't see the last two rounds, but congrats to Andy who placed in 2 Top 8's in two days. Apparently the guy knows his Rec-Sur.
6  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: [Annoucement] Grand Prix Trials For Columbus Updated on WOTC site on: April 11, 2007, 03:29:55 pm
I was just browsing through the WotC website and saw that Nashville had a GPT this past weekend. Only 12 people in the tourney. Does anyone have decklists or anything?

Even better question: Is it even worth considering 12-person tournaments--even GPT's--in metagaming?

Basically, I didn't know where to post to figure out if anyone has heard about the first GPT in the US. Mods, if a new thread should be created or I'm necro-ing a dead thread, feel free to scold me.
7  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: Kadilak's Dual Land Draft III 4/28/07 Baldwinsville, NY on: April 09, 2007, 11:15:40 pm
If there's anyone heading up through the Harrisburg area with an open seat, I'd love to see what Legacy players look like in real life.
8  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: Legacy Tournament - Philly Area - 2/10/07 - Strands/Duals on: January 31, 2007, 06:08:03 pm
Just curious, but are Planar Chaos cards going to be legal to play in constructed events at this tournament?
9  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / [Announcement] 2/3/07 Legacy Tourney in Central PA ***100% Prize Payout!!!*** on: December 11, 2006, 11:54:11 pm
The following is quoted from Solpugid on The Source. Being an avid fan of Legacy and generally interested in playing more often, I have been in contact with him and would be happy to answer those questions I can and forward those questions I cannot. Also, contact info will be included at the end of this post.

*******
Saturday, February 3 (day after groundhog day!), at 12:45 pm I will be holding a privately organized tourney. This means no official judge.

It will be held in Huntingdon Pennsylvania, specifically at Juniata College. The address is 1600 Moore Street (signs to Juniata are all around town). The event will be in Brumbaugh Science Center (large dome-fronted building on Moore Street), in Alumni Hall (auditorium at the very front of Brumbaugh, visible from the street). Don't worry, the campus is small so it's very easy to find.

The entry fee will be $15. This money will go to a 100% prize payout, with exact prize split based on number of players. Something like this:

10 participants:
1st: $60
2nd: $40
3rd: $25
4th: $25

20 participants:
1st: $120
2nd: $60
3rd and 4th: $30
5th-8th: $15

Food will probably not be readily available (though we can order pizza or subs for anyone who wants it), so bring some lunch.

Anyone need any more info? Please ask.

10  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / Re: [Report] Open Dutch Champs Legacy 2006 - *1st* on: October 31, 2006, 12:52:48 am
Congrats on the win! I'm really glad to see someone pilot this kind of a deck, even though I wish I had put it all together. I have been playing a casual deck like this for a while now, except it used Land Tax, so it wasn't Legacy legal. The creature base was very similar, but the main difference is probably switching the Enlightened Tutor/Land Tax engine for Life from the Loam/Solitary Confinement lock. Some of the cards I've used that I didn't see in your list that I thought might at least merit testing are Mox Diamond and (especially) Riftstone Portal. This deck has awesome synergies with those cards too so I'm curious to hear your opinion.

So is it justified to be pissed that the one day I have to graduate friggin college has to be this day?
12  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / [Report] Pro Tour : Kobe. Legacy Side Event with UWB Fish on: October 22, 2006, 03:15:38 pm
I can't help but look at that Smallpox deck and think, "Where was combo?" I mean, even in this report there was no sign of IGGy, Solidarity, or even Gamekeeper/Salvagers. I don't mean to discount the sheer power of the deck, because obviously it did well at PT Kobe, but can it really be expected to do well in a metagame like the last D4D where there were 6 Solidarity players in the top 25? I'm looking at the decklist now, and other than the discard and land-saccing from Smallpox itself, there are only REB's and Gaea's Blessings in the sideboard, which most good Solidarity players could easily play around. Any thoughts?
13  Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / LED and Corpse Dance on: October 21, 2006, 05:52:02 pm
Can I play a reanimation spell like Corpse Dance with no target in my graveyard and respond by saccing a Lion's Eye Diamond, which would then put a creature in the yard? I know it's probably a dumb question and doesn't work, but I don't trust myself to know for sure. Thanks.

Lion's Eye Diamond
0
Artifact
Sacrifice Lion's Eye Diamond, Discard your hand: Add three mana of any one color to your mana pool. Play this ability only any time you could play an instant.

Corpse Dance
2B
Instant
Buyback 2 (You may pay an additional 2 as you play this spell. If you do, put this card into your hand as it resolves.) Return the top creature card from your graveyard to play. That creature gains haste. Remove the creature from the game at end of turn.

Such questions belong in the Rules forum. Additionally, please include Oracle wordings of cards for rules questions.

14  Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / [Report] N00b places well in Philly Area tourney with IGGy Pop on: October 15, 2006, 04:22:47 pm
So a week or two ago, when I first saw the thread announcing the tourney in Philly, I put up a post asking if anyone was going up from my area and if I could bum a ride. I got a response and began talking to Evenpence about it, and he said I could definitely ride up with he and some of his friends. After a week of not hearing from him, I finally give him a call Friday night to confirm and see where they’re leaving. To my utter dismay, he can no longer take me for reasons irrelevant to this report. So after some deliberation, I decided at about 10 am Saturday that I was going to go to the 3 pm tournament in Philly. So I packed up a few decks, some trade stuff, and my trusty Portal Mountain Goat, and left for the tournament all alone.

I arrived about fifteen minutes before 3, only to find out that things have been running behind and the Legacy part won’t start until 3:15. Cool. More time to hang before I start. So I browse around the vendor tables for a bit and watch some of the Vintage and 5-Color matches that are going on, and I finally hear that Legacy is going to start at about 3:45. So without further ado, my decklist:

// Lands
        2 Island
        3 Swamp
        1 Cabal Pit
        3 Flooded Strand
        4 Polluted Delta
        2 Underground Sea
// Enchantments
        3 Leyline of the Void
// Spells
        4 Brainstorm
        4 Cabal Ritual
        4 Dark Ritual
        1 Echoing Truth
        3 Intuition
        4 Mental Note
        3 Mystical Tutor
        4 Ill-Gotten Gains
        4 Infernal Tutor
        3 Tendrils of Agony
// Artifacts
        4 Lion's Eye Diamond
        4 Lotus Petal
// Sideboard
SB:  3 Duress
SB:  2 Echoing Truth
SB:  1 Leyline of the Void
SB:  3 Massacre
SB:  1 Rushing River
SB:  1 Tropical Island
SB:  4 Xantid Swarm
I would call it a pretty typical Iggy list with only three maindeck leyline because they’re not really necessary—I like the fourth Mental Note more—and sideboard Duresses mostly because I am really insecure with comboing into counters. I had seen some guys throwing together a Tog deck, so I was already worried going into the event, even though there were only about 12 or 15 people. Anyway, pairings went up and the first match began.

Round 1: Robert (B/W Reanimator)
This guy really seemed confidant. I was most definitely nervous, mostly because of my lack of experience with tournament magic. We rolled a die; I win the roll and draw seven. Complete crap. I toss that back and draw six that don’t look much better. I decided to keep, though hesitantly, and proceed to play land. He gets an early turn Cabal Therapy, seeing most notably the Ill-Gotten Gains, and we continue a lot of draw/go. Finally he plays a Buried Alive for Akroma, Kiki-Jiki, and Sky Hussar, Exhume’s the Kiki-Jiki, Reanimates the Sky Hussar, and swings for like 400,000.
Game 2 I boarded in a fourth Leyline and my Duresses. A turn zero Leyline on my part equals GG for him. I comboed out like turn 2 or 3.
Game 3 I kept the opening seven, only to draw into a Leyline since I was on the play. Turn two was fun, though, when I Ritualed out said Leyline—who would have thought you’d ever hardcast that thing? Two turns later I’m reporting and watching Evenpence finish his Legacy and Vintage games at the same time.

1-0

Round 2: Chris (43 Land.dec)
I keep my opening hand like a dummy because it has Leyline, Lotus Petal, and a Brainstorm. Only thing is, Leyline doesn’t hurt this guy, and my Brainstorm doesn’t give me a land. I proceed to get stomped on by 4 Mishra’s Factories.
Games two and three end up being very similar in my notes, having me going from 20 to 19 and him going from 20 to “X.”

2-0

Round 3: Mike (G/W Beats)
At this point I’m gaining some confidence and thanking God that I have yet to face a deck that runs any form of countermagic. I sit down across form this guy and chit-chat asking him about previous rounds and such, and finally get to the gaming. Game one I apparently had a pretty decent hand and comboed out while I had 18 life, and he had a sideways Silhana Ledgewalker. Game two was a little more interesting. Turn one he plays Fyndlhorn Elves, turn two is Rule of Law, turn three is Troll Ascetic, turn four is Rule of Law, and turn five is Ivory Mask. By this point, I’m at six life with one Echoing Truth and enough to combo out in my hand. I had a great plan to get around those Rule of Law, but apparently I needed to rethink things. I decided to Echoing Truth the Rules at the end of his turn with the intention of using it after I Ill-Gotten Gains, but as luck would have it, I drew into another. Thank you sideboard! Into the final game we go…

3-0

Round 4: Alex (Faerie Stompy)
Since this is a four round tournament with no cut to the top 8, we talk about IDing so we can both be winners, but the prizes are set and Alex beats me with tiebreakers, so we decide to play it out. Game one starts with Ancient Tomb? Jitte, Island? Serendib Efreet, City of Traitors? Chalice of the Void at 2. As this match is VERY bad for me, I renegotiate IDing after the first game. If I lose, I could easily get third and no prize, but if we draw no one can touch either of us. Acknowledging that I would have lost this match, I ask whether Alex would rather have the first place Judge Promo Grim Lavamancer or the DCI foil Phyrexian Negator. He says Negator. WHAT??? Negator? Are you sure? The value difference is pretty substantial. “I just can’t see myself ever using that card,” he says to me. He insisted. We reported. And there should be a Grim Lavamancer being mailed my way in a couple of days.

If you couldn’t tell already, I greatly enjoyed this little adventure. Even if I did have to do a lot of driving, the payout and experience were definitely worth it. The venue at the Montgomery County Community College was more than adequate, with the majority of the tables going unused while I was there. Also, they offered 5-Color, Standard, Vintage, Two-Headed Giant Sealed (TimeSpiral), and Legacy tournaments throughout the day. While I would love to say that I added some duals to my collection, I think that Judge Promo will do just fine. Thanks again to all my opponents who were great sportsmen, and most especially to Alex for drawing me into the first prize.

Peace,
Cisco

Props:
Mike for hosting this incredibly fun little event.
Alex, again, for letting me have the Lavamancer.
Iggy Pop for performing despite having a n00b as the operator.
Evenpence for playing simultaneously in both Legacy and Vintage events.

Slops:
Evenpence for favoring making out with his girlfriend in Delaware to driving me to and from this event.
Me for being stupid and keeping God-awful hands.
The PA Turnpike, for making this experience $12 more expensive.
Evenpence for losing simultaneously in both Legacy and Vintage events.

I was reading some things on the collegeville website and it mentioned something about Time Spiral being legal. Was that for all formats being played, or is that simply for one format and I'm just confused?

Sounds like a wonderful little outing. Is anyone going form the Harrisburg area?
