1  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Poll: Which Card is the Best Candidate for Unrestriction? on: February 19, 2007, 07:57:23 pm
Key is kind of obvious but...

What about burning wish? Does anyone sees a deck running 4 B.whishes when you can play 4 grim tutors? I'm quite sure the card would be played as four of in certain deck but its not stronger than options (namely grim) and could open build possibilities.

Burning Wish
1R - Sorcery
Search your sideboard for Yawgmoth's Will and put it into your hand.  RFG Burning Wish

I would play GrimLong and only GrimLong, forever and ever, amen.

Would you ever play burning wish over grim tutor? I wouldn't !

Yawg win maindeck + infinite tutor/manipulation effects (brainstorm...)>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 4 burning wish

On the other hand, I can see the wish being usefull in a control deck.

Since grim tutoris legal, I don't see what explains burning wish restriction.

Just had to say I feel this article is the first steve's one in a while that was not totally written to make some $$$

I really,really enjoyed that one!

As for LOA, I like that card a lot but not maindeck. Sometimes you just keep a poor seven hand that wins if there is no wasteland on the other side but you dont know if you play against stax or slaver.
On the other hand, against combo you want UU open turn 2 (and thus to be alive at that point) and LOA fails to do that. Combo can also make you trash your hand to disrupt them, LOA doest shine here!

a card that i don't want to see against combo, stax and fish is a sideboard card.

Still not as bad as Ironman Magic.

I once sat watching a game of multiplayer magic where the winner could win a mox saphire. This was a game of ironman multiplayer magic and they were mostly playing fully powered. Normally when you play a mox it is not a big deal. There was even somebody playing a lotus at one time just not using it. Than the unpowered player played a shatterstorm. Well needless to say, a few pieces of power were lost then and there. The lotus player kept 1 piece of his lotus so nobody could remake his one and for remembrance. I think he will look at it now every once in a while and have some pain in his heart.
Those were good times hehe...

Can't you just concede in response?

I'd rather light a cigarette with a 100$ bill than rip a mox!

I've never seen a blacker lotus torn apart...but a real one Rolling Eyes!!
6  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Tyrant Oath on: August 26, 2006, 07:21:00 am
It's is slower because you first have to bounce your chalice and you have to have 2 accel on board where both other decks have stuff to play from graveyard or way to bring back the moxen.

I can bounce my chalice for 0 with any spell, even a mox. I play the spell and put the two triggers on the stack, chalice first and then the tyrant. I bounce the chalice, and since it isnt in play at the end of playing the spell, the mox resolves.

Keep dreaming, it doesn't work. Once the Chalice of the Void ability is on the stack, it will resolve even if the CotV is no longer in play. Removing the source of an effect will not negate the effect itself, it's a basic ruling.

False, it actually work.

Challice triggers at the end of the resolution and at that time it won't be in play!

hi all

i just realized i couldn't post in most of this forum and i've just read it might be becouse i never posted here...so here I am Wink

i play since mirodin, am a control player at heart and made a couple top 8 in small tourny...usually getting at the 9 th place for important tourny Rolling Eyes.

props for this forum that learnt me so much!

8  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: [results] Frensh Vintage Championship Top8 on: August 13, 2006, 01:26:54 pm
there are 60 cards if you count the academy  Wink

only 18 people came for various reasons :

-only 36 were to compete anyway plus a waiting list of 16 in case some couldn't make it (which obviously happened  Sad )
-the french nationals were on the same day
-it was on a saturday
-many people had already booked their vacation when the tourny's day was announced

still, most of the best french player were there and the top 8 is filled with exelent players, though it's remains sad!

However, the dragon is ridiculous once it's down. Without any help, it draws you an extra card a turn and shocks your opponent for two.

how is it better than dark confidant?

they do pretty much the same thing but one costs 1B  Rolling Eyes

it's french and yeah, they are removed!

The article is indeed good but I don't see the point...

Why do you always test without sideboard when dredge.deck is probably the one deck that has the best advantage MD and that has to fight a lot of hate post side!

The simple fact that in those tests dredge only won by 4/3 shows that it would probably loose to a best out of three game!

Good article but I believe it overvalues dredge's match ups!
12  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: The right play? Duress vs. Force of Will on: April 16, 2006, 11:10:13 am
nobody can give a good answer if you dont tell the card that will be removed if you indeed force...or if you have the choice between two or more cards to trash.

For instance, if the card is chain of vapor, you should force...

TT stands for Tendrils Tutor...but klu wanted to name it Ten Tendrils lately though

I toped 4 with a deck quite similar to yours two weeks ago...since i used to play gift i kept my old gift list and tweaked it a bit to fit confidant.

3 Island
3 Underground Sea
2 Volcanic Island
4 Polluted Delta
1 Flooded Strand
1 Tolarian Academy
1 Library of Alexandria
1 Swamp

1 Darksteel Colossus
3 Dark Confidant

1 Demonic Tutor
1 Fact or Fiction
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Yawgmoth's Will
2 Gifts Ungiven
1 Tinker
1 Time Walk
4 Mana Drain
1 Black Lotus
1 Mana Crypt
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Pearl
4 Brainstorm
1 Sol Ring
4 Force of Will
1 Mystical Tutor
1 Vampiric Tutor
3 Duress
1 Recoup
2 Sensei's Divining Top
1 Tendrils of Agony
1 Rebuild
1 Chain of Vapor
1 Merchant Scroll

SB: 1 Duress
SB: 2 Chain of Vapor
SB: 2 Pithing Needle
SB: 2 Rack and Ruin
SB: 1 Darkblast
SB: 3 Tormod's Crypt
SB: 2 Pyroclasm
SB: 1 Sundering Titan
SB : 1 Gush

don't blame me for the side, it sucks indeed but i decided to play the deck a couple days before the tourny...gush is the best example for "oops, i need another card in my side".

I went twice 2/0 against slaver, 2/0 against stacker, 1/2 against grim long and ID to top 8.
In quarter I went 2/1 against kobold (in game one he killed me on turn 2 after a duress and a FOW ).
In semi i lost 1/2 because the deck totally failed me in two "worst ever" mana death...all the same i was one turn away from wining if he didn't top deck the vampiric =>bounce to get rid of my 11/11.

the gift engine was amazing and each time i lost 4 hp to get it, I won the next turn or was able to survive (IE against stax : 4 permanants).

this deck totally destroys control since it draws a lot by very different ways (hard to hate), can totally win without any bob (I haven't seen them in half the games) and has a lot of disruption.

against stax it has a good chance thanks to its pretty stable mana base (swamp is tech Smile).

fish can be tricky but the 7/10 should Finnish the game.

oath is a great match up...a 3 turns kill is just too slow but a turn one orchard/oath can complicate things.

I didn't get to test against aggro...

after testing, tinker doesn't belong to the MD...I only killed with it once against stacker and once against slaver (hardcasted ).

2 tops are too much...i might even cut the last one which tends to make you wait while you have pretty much won the game. Anyway i don't fear the bob's life loss, they are just too slow!

In this deck merchant is amazing, it gets bounces (kill in its own in mid game), gifts (the same) ancestral in the first turns and even tinker via mystical against aggro deck!

I'm still concerned by :

i would like to know in which match up your combo version is better than the controlish one you have also posted...what kind of reason would make you chose a version rather than the other one to a tourney?

great deck BTW  Very Happy

you have to intuition TWICE (if your first Intuition has 2 Dragons and kill, you're stuck with the kill in your hand.  Vice versa if you get both kill conditions + 1 dragon).

True, but not always. For instance, if you get at least one activation out of Bazaar and dump a Squee into the graveyard, just make sure you leave it there if they Needle the Bazaar afterwards. Alternately, you still have Xantids and Squees that can be cast and might find their way into the graveyard after blocking or getting countered. Then you can Intuition for 2 WGD + your kill spell, Animate WGD, generate enough mana, stop the loop on the Squee or Xantid in the grave, then hardcast the kill card and win. The last option is to of course just hard cast Sliver Queen in 5C (if that is one of the kil cards).

These options are not amazing or anything, but one always has to be wary of not making the "automatic" play like always returning Squees from the graveyard.

or you can just use your squee as usual and use your BoB in response to the needle...what's the point in leaving a squee in the grave after the first activation?
