While that is very nice indeed, I rather play zero "dead" cards and have a 99% chance of winning when comboing, then risk having/drawing my the one "dead" card and win 99.9% of the time when comboing.

Nice report indeed, very detailed. So, my props go out to you and to Mathijs, who (after 5-0-ed in the swiss after 5 round) maiking top 4 in the process on his third vintage tournament! (his first 2 being about a year or 4 ago) More to be expected soon. Thanks! Indeed, Mathijs clearly knows what he's doing. It would be great if he would play more Vintage! How was your tournament? We didn't talk but I've seen you there... Robrecht. I played a Cerebral Assassin wich I designed personally for the German metagame, (Annency) unfortunataly I was not able to go to Annency, but after spending so many time in deck development. The worst matchup (storm variants) turn up to be great (3-1) during testing so I was good to go. I won the first round against cobra-tezz. The second round I was paired up against Twan with dredge, which was the perft scenario to decide once and for all who had the best graveyard based vintage deck, and would therefore call himself "King of Bazaars", after him cowerdley sneaking in a turn 1 leyline of the void in play, I simply crushed all his dreams in game 2 proving to have the upperhand (goblin welder/tormod's crypt/sharuum shenenigans ftw!), unfortunataly it was not meant to be (me), game 3 I was destroyed by a chalice at zero, whille keeping a hand with demonic tutor, yixlid jailer, mox jet and mox pearls, 3 other decenct cards but with no lands. The suffering of not being the King of Bazaars must have been equal to say; losing an arm in a sword fight while being on a horse. I was able to win the third round against dark times deck, which was quite interesting, since C/A vs Dark Times is not a matchup that you will see every day. Round 4 against aggro shop (with arcbound dudes) my opp proved to me that quantity wins over quality since my big bots could do very little against a herd of 1/1's with backed up cranial plating and skullclamp, in hindsight I probably played kinda poor here since ancient' grudging a skullclamp instead of a cranial plating would totally prevented him from going bonker. Next time I'll go for card advantage and simply laugh at being dealt damage. I received a gameloss for being late in round 5, to make matters worse, he was able to play a jace with drain backup on turn 1. Me no like Jace Next time I will probably pick up a real deck.

Definitely.
Unless I am being sabotaged, think of carbombs, or a room filled with garlic butter and french bread which would prevent me from making it to the tournament in time. (and yes I had to google "stokbrood" to be able to translate it into enlish)
Oh man, I'll keep that in mind! Maybe I can setup some tricks Although I do remember beating you last time we faced each other, I think I'm one of the only Breda guys to have beaten you no? I'm definitely going to give you a run for you title this year! To bad it wasn’t in some kind of finals, that would have looked really good on your curriculum vitae. Mark (Thomas) Hendriks actually has nightmares about playing you, the way he describes the games you guys play together crack me up each time. Since he is one of the “hardest to beat” players (do mention this to Frank van Rijn if you want to lure him out of his tent) from the zuid-holland province, it would be very pleasant if you 2 meet again in the semifinals, guaranteeing me a rematch. (if I am able to reach the finals as well of course, even though I managed to do that every time before) *disclaimer: there were only 2 vintage nationals in the Dutch history*

How did you feel about the Oath board? Did you miss having more slots available for other matchups, or did you find that the Oath plan was just what was needed against decks that the mainboard didn't trounce?
Only against other storm decks without Force of Will (especially a mirror), did I want additional sideboard slots. (since pact of negation is basicly a dead card) Boarding orchards against oath is fun since it will most likely trump their "second best" godhand (the first one being lotus, key, vault) which is almost their only chance of winning this matchup. The oathpackage was awesome against workshop, but only for one event I think. (the chance of having the element of suprise with it in future events has decreased somewhat) I notices you ran only 11 land. Do you feel this was the right number, or did you miss an extra land or two at any point?
Yes i did miss out on land drops in one or 2 occations, my idea of playing so few lands was that Preordain almost counts as half a land/mana since it will most like find mana when you need it. (I can almost garantue you that no one will counter a preordain, unlike brainstorm) How often was Pact useful and how often do you think it would have been better as Thoughtseize?
I didn't count, but my idea behind it was: thoughtseize/duress is best when you want to win turn 2/3, where pact of negation is better if you want to win turn 1/2. Pact is obviously bad/weaker against shops, but I could board a lot in that matchup, so that counts for something as well. did you run 3 10drils specifically so that with the Robot you coudl dodge Cap effects, or was there another reason? In testing recently, I've found that 3 is too many in the maindeck as I always end up with extra that would better serve me as something else. What do you think of two?
Yes, my standard for any combo deck is that it must have at least 4 kill conditions after sideboarding in the shop and combo matchups. 3 Tendrill's main seems like the right number. (one tendrill's in the opening hand can easily be pitched to chrome mox, or make a turn 1 or 2 Ad Nauseum 95% lethal since you will "only" need to hit mana cards at that point. Sometimes you can randomly win turn 3/4 (with you opponent sitting on a pair of counters) using chain of vapor to create a nice storm count (not many players will counter a chain of vapor when you are holding 2 or more cards in your hand), sometimes even netting some mana in the process)

Did the ANT player have to face shops at any point in the day?
I faced Steffen with his ANT monster in top 8. You can read it in my report (see above for a link). In shortHe won the die roll and won on turn 2 after Chain of Vapor on my Sphere of Resistance. I won game 2 thanks to a lot of Spheres. He won game 3 because he caught me completely off guard with the Oath transformational sideboard! I read about it but didn't expect it. You can read the full story in my report. @Steffen: did you like the Preordains? Would you keep them in a next version of ANT? Congrats with the win. You even did the Dr.Evil grin when you hardcast your Sphinx of the Steel Wind after Being Sadistically Sacramented by your opponent... Robrecht Preordain is a keeper for sure, I would play at least 3 of them at all time in such a combo deck.

@ Roel,
Thanks for hosting this event in a time I could not do it by myself due to the birth of my baby.
The events for after the summer are in the planning and I hope we can have as much fun during those.
Nice to see that much storm in the top 8.
Congratz to Steffen, he did it again with ANT, although he dislikes the deck.
Preordain makes up a lot. (congratz on becoming a dad by the way ) Did the ANT player have to face shops at any point in the day?
Only once this tournament. Overall I havent lost a match yet against stax/mud with ANT, although I must say I neither lost the die rolls in those matchups, I do render it as a bad matchup thought, but being able to bring in 12 cards makes a lot of difference as well. Steffen

34 people pre-registered and we have people from several countries showing up, this event is looking to be off the chart !! I've updated the registered info again just to show you guys who's coming.
There's a serious rivalry brewing between Team RND and Team Randstad (Dr. Evil what the heck IS your team called ?!) as they dominated the previous Breda event and we dominated the Hengelo event, who will take this down ?
That’s kind of complicated. I play/ have played magic with several groups (when it comes down to magic it is 55% limited, 20% EDH and other multiplayer, 10% extended, 5% standard and 10% vintage for me), some were/are on my initiative, some I joined, there is also a lot of “overlap in players”. (sorry don’t know the English word) Like a lot of people, creating names for a bunch of people who test/hang out is not really my style, I am a member of KVdeckmasters though, meaning that when I make top 8 people tend to say: “look, another KV’er made top 8”, but it is in no way connected to Vintage. I know some member of the “Randstad Team(kliek if you will)” you referred to, see them selves as Dwarven Ponies. (At least I know they did at some moments/locations) However, I f*cking hate horses even more than being called “lucky”, so that name is kind of out of the question when talking to or about me. I believe in national glory (dutchies doing well in international events), and I do like to see a friend or a familiar face get better or doing well in a tournament, but beyond that I only have eye for my personal growth/performance. I am currently also collecting souls of players (you'll never know when they come in handy) by beating them with Helix Pinacle, so far I am between 5 and 7.

No, didn't really thought that thru, the swarms were a bit disappointing, about the war against stax/9spheres it is kinda impossible not to feel like France no mather how many sideboard cards/soldiers you've got available (no offence). 2 buddies of mine are really fond of this deck and I have some kind of secret agenda (man I love those 2 words) or checklist if you will, with Ad Nauseum storm as one of the only 3 decks that I never played on a vintage tournament (the other 2 are dredge an tropical storm, which kinda sucks without 4 gushes is guess) so i decided to give it a shot. The Brainfreeze was nice (2 or 3 KO's that were not possible without them), even though I never fell victim to extirpate, jcap or sadistic sacrement. I don't really do reports because I believe they bring bad luck, or because I am way to lazy to take any notes, you decide.

Here is the list that I (Steffen) played. 1 Black Lotus 4 Chrome Mox 1 Lotus Petal 1 Mana Crypt 1 Mana Vault 1 Mox Jet 1 Mox Sapphire 1 Sol Ring 4 Ad Nauseam 3 Cabal Ritual 4 Dark Ritual 1 Demonic Consultation 1 Demonic Tutor 4 Duress 1 Necropotence 3 Tendrils of Agony 1 Thoughtseize 1 Vampiric Tutor 1 Yawgmoth's Will 1 Ancestral Recall 1 Brainstorm 3 Chain of Vapor 1 Hurkyl's Recall 1 Merchant Scroll 1 Mystical Tutor 4 Pact of Negation 1 Ponder Lands (12): 1 Bayou 1 Bloodstained Mire 1 Island 4 Polluted Delta 2 Swamp 3 Underground Sea SB: 1 Engineered Explosives 2 Extirpate 2 Hurkyl's Recall 1 Massacre 2 Tormod's Crypt 4 Xantid Swarm 2 Yixlid Jailer 1 Brainfreeze Don't be fooled by the deck recent great (dutch) performances, as it is to suicidal for any sane person to pilot it, even I lost it sometimes due to nearly or fully killing myself on 3 different occasions. (flipping multiple ad nauseums during an ad nauseum can be a bitch, as well as demonic consultation) but that is just "het risico van het vak" as we say in Holland. My ubernutz addition to the sideboard of this deck that I kinda stole form Robert Maffei (in dutch his name is translated in something like "Weird Egg", wich entirely justificies this theft) was Brainfreeze, which I added between my second and third prophetic dream, mainly against some cowardly sideboarding attempts. (extirpate, jester's cap, sadistic sacrement, cranial extraction and such) it was also nice to improve other combo matchups (more kills equals more fun) as well as the mirror since the pact of negations aren't that great when you are playing solitaire. I can't really advice anyone to play this unguided rocket. Here: I dare you, http://www.deckcheck.net/deck.php?id=24718Use sample hand with this similair deck in the bottem to generate a sample hand, after a few tries you'll will notice very quickly that most hands arent' that great to start with at all, let alone allow you a turn 1 or 2 kill. Unless of course your name is Mark (Thomas Hendrix) and you can ignore al statistics.

@Zeus-Online From looking at what he played I think It was a similar list compared with the one he made the top 8 with during TDV VII back in April. For reference: http://www.themanadrain.com/index.php?topic=37746.03. David Martinez with Madness 4x Tarmogoyf 4x Wild Mongrol 3x Basking Rootwalla 4x Squee, Goblin Nabob 2x Wonder 4x FoW 4x Circular Logic Time Walk Ancestral Recall Brainstorm Mystical Tutor 3x Null Rod 2x Artifact Mutation 2x Firestorm 4x Bazaar of Baghdad Mox Sapphire Mox Ruby Mox Emerald Black Lotus 3x Waste Land Strip Mine 2x Wooded Foothills 2x Flooded Strand 2x Volcanic Island Taiga 3x Tropical Island Forest Island
SB 2x Ancient Grudge 3x REB 2x Tormod's Crypt 3x Energy Flux 2x Pithing Needle 2 Fearie Macabre Umezawa'sJitte David played Bloodghast and played white instead of red if I am not mistaken (as he boarded in Aethersworn cannonist and I didn't see any red cards beside the Squees)

I'm glad to see the deck is still played, and winning (I haven't played in awhile). Why didn't this guy call it CA?
Although my deck still got most of the original CA components I was able to improve/change about 10 (could be less) cards from the original list. The true power now is life of the loam, believe me its realy realy good, a must have in any deck with bazaar. For example: where the old version had to had a bazaar or a thirst or intuition to go off, now you can simply play al life from the loam, fetching any wasted bazaar of used strip and dredge once in a will in the progress, filling the yard with very interesting goodies and eventuelly always giving you the bazaar for the win, exept for one game though when my opponent was able to counter my life from the loam several time, ussually not a problem unless he manages to do so 5 TIMES IN A ROW!

That's funny, because 66.66% of all Fish decks made it in the top 8. That's pretty sick right there, wouldn't you say? I think you underestimate Fish or just haven't played against a capable build from a capable opponent.
And One-Hundred % of the 2-face decks also made T8.   Best play of the day: Turn 1: land, welder, mox. Turn 1: land, mox. Turn 2: land, go. Opp:Eot brainstorm Me: Entomb for Possessed Portal, weld it in and having a squee in hand for maintaining cardadvantage. "Foil Entomb: €5,- Foil Possessed Portal €2,- The look on the face of an opponent when he knows he is screwed, Priceless! Thats all folks. Steffen
