Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Shrinking Vintage in Southern US (mainly TX)

I'll be moving back to SA in December, as you know, and I'll jam some vintage with you! I mostly play Legacy and Modern these days, as vintage just isn't something 99% of people I know can afford to buy into. I tried to get a vintage scene going here in Anchorage and failed miserably. Modern took a couple years to catch on, but my shop gets 12-20 people weekly now. We even have one legacy tournament every month. Maybe we should start off trying to build a modern scene first and work our way up. Also, I'm bringing three other modern players with me. Doug

Great podcast guys! I always enjoy the set reviews. I'm really excited about Izzet Charm, and am going to start testing it soon in a couple of different builds. I actually thought control slaver the first time I read it. I loved that deck, so I'm always on the lookout for an enabler.
As for your question, Steve, I put the episode on my iPod and listened to it on my way to and from work. Sometimes I listen to it on a run when I'm working out. It's the only Vintage content on podcast, and it's appreciated.

This doesn't seem like a good card for Vintage imo, as it doesn't give you a huge advantage right away, but it seems like a pretty sweet card regardless. It just doesn't have a very powerful effect quickly enough. Jace is usually the only planeswalker played in competitive vintage, with Tezz only showing up on a limited basis because he tutors for combo peices.

I had a great experience as a first timer, and I plan on attending again next year. It was really great meeting some of you forum-dwellers face to face. The vintage community may be small, but more than makes up for that in character. As a community, you are all more welcoming than I ever expected, and I would like to thank you for that. Also, props to Pastimes for running a great event and for making sure that our play area was secure. Once again, it was great meeting some of you and I look forward to next year's tournament!

@ hvndr3d y34r h3x: Looks like there will be me and the other two guys who responded to this post. I'll probably need to find a fourth player. I'm building the cube that the guy who owns the blog posted, and then I'm going to test it out with some friends to see if I want to make any changes to it.
Have you already played it? Any tips for improving the cube?

@Samite Healer: I'm wondering what you mean by your comment on entry fees and prize support. Do you feel that higher entry fees/bigger prizes will attract new players or discourage them? I've always thought that a lot of people like the "gamble" of playing for bigger prizes, but maybe I'm wrong. What is your opinion?

Sorry for the double post, but I have one more thing to say. I wanted to try MODO without spending a bunch of money on virtual cards, so I built a pauper deck on there and quickly found out that formats that aren't played in real life aren't played much online either. Pauper tournaments usually never actually happen due to a lack of participants. If Vintage isn't popular irl, it probably won't succeed online either.

I agree with some of the previouse posts. There's a huge difference for me, and most of the people I play with. I refuse to play primarily online and will probably get out of the game if that's the direction it takes. I want to interact with my opponent and meet people. I would also much rather hold an awesome card in my hand and put it out on the table than click a button.
I currently live in Anchorage where there is a healthy standard/limited scene, but virtually no vintage scene (no one owns the cards). My local store hosted a proxy tournament a couple of months ago, and it was somewhat successful, but they don't want to host another. I suggested larger buy-ins and larger prizes, but the store owner is very resistant. I play in the store with the one other guy who owns power, and people gather to watch and ogle the cards, but most of them can't afford such items. If anyone has other suggestions for building a vintage scene under these circumstances, I'm all ears!

Wow, great podcast! Paper and pencil were most definitely needed for this one. I listened to this for the first time while commuting to and from work, and I had to sit down with it a second time at home. I'm going to be at GenCon for the Vintage tournament and am now considering playing Doomsday in the Legacy tournament. I'll be purchasing the article on my next day off so that I can study some more. This deck seems very challenging, but enjoyable.
Thanks for the hard work that you guy put into providing an enjoyable podcast!

I'm curious, what do you all think of Stifle as a card right now. It seems pretty good in the mirror match. You could use it to stop their oath or even from drawing 7 off Grizzelbrand. Also, isn't Mental Misstep important for stopping turn 1 cage? I count 15 cages being played in the top 8 of the latest Meandeck Open. Of course most of those are in sideboards, but that's still a lot of cages.

That's unfortunate, because I usually play some sort of control deck. It seems like these decks have fallen to the wayside a bit. I haven't played in a competative environment for quite some time now, so maybe it's time for me to try something new. I'm eyeing that sweet Ritual Oath deck that is being discussed in the other forums.

I have to agree with some of the previous posts. This seems like it wants to do the same things as Oath, but it's not as diverse, the protection is much worse, and I'm not sure why you wouldn't want to run Grisselbrand. It's just better than Emrakul imo. Granted, I haven't played with or against your deck. These are just my first impressions. I have to admit, I'm a little bit infatuated with the Ritual Oath deck posted in here at the moment. Doug

Hello all, having never attended GenCon before myself, how many of you play in the preliminary events in which you can win byes for the Championship event? Are they worthwhile? Entry is $18 for a chance to win a Kindle Fire (eh) and a 2-round bye in the championship tournament. How many players can you expect to participate in a prelim? How many rounds is the main event? Thanks in advance,
Doug

Is Blightsteel Colossus still an efficient win condition? Creature decks are being played a lot more, which means people will play more creature hate (swords, etc). It seems like, while an early Tinker->Colossus can potentially get you an easy win, losing the colossus that you tinkered for can be rough and a lot more likely to happen now.

Well, I'm sorry to hear about all of the thefts last year, but I am going to be at Gencon anyway. This will be my first time at a big event and I am very excited. I moved to AK a couple of years ago, and there isn't much Vintage to be played here, so I'm going to make the trip out to Indianapolis with the goal of meeting new people and having a great time. I don't know many people in the community personally, but if anyone would like to go out for some drinks in Indianapolis, the first round is on me!

Hello, my name is Doug and I currently live in Anchorage, AK where it is nearly impossible to find vintage players. I started playing when I was in high school when a girlfriend introduced me to her Revised decks, and was instantly hooked. I have dabbled in limited and standard, but vintage is what I started off playing tournaments (back when it was Type 1 and we had beyonddominia) and it is the best format, hands down. If you have access to the cards, why would you want to play anything else?? Anyway, I have been out of the game a couple of times, but always come back. I would like to become a more active member of this site and community. My goals are to meet new people and become a better player. Thanks for reading!
