1  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / [Deck]A new look at Keeper- GateKeeper as we call it. on: February 04, 2004, 09:22:08 am
This deck seems very interesting but would it not be better to run a third decree? I haven't tested this deck with Standstills but I have been running Decree for a couple of months now (giving up Morphling was so hard) and started doodling with Dragon last week. It seems to me you would want to have one in your hand early for Standstill tricks.

I.e. Your opponent lays first turn pup, go. You lay Standstill and opponent thinks you're playing land still or are just an idiot but  2 turns later you'll be at 4 mana and 16/15 life, with developed mana base, and a 1/1 token during his/her attack phase. Your opponent must now brake Standstill and most likely never recover or never recover under standstill.

With triple decree the obove scenario seems as if it would happen more often.

Also how has Sandstill faired in the workshop matchup where you must eliminate welder before continueing with your own plan? Notice that if you do this then they have more time to continue with their plan of slowing you down before Standstill hits. It seems to me that Scrying would be better in this matchup but that is just initial thought.

I don't think I'd go the 'green route' any time soon. It would dilute my mana base too much and I think it's not worth it.

Sorry, the whole green thing was meant to emphasize the greatness of Balance against Suicide... obviously against 4 Sinkholes + 5 Strip effects green would probably be the worst idea. Besides, recursion is covered by Yagmoth's Will.

In an aggro meta would you consider going to The Abyss and Morphling? The Abyss offers hard card advantage instead of pseudo without Fire/Ice or decree to help it out.

The matchup versus suicide is where card disadvantage tutors shine along with the previously debated Balance. Normally against sui I try to counter chalice/null rod and make it my goal to get Balance on top of the library at the last possible second. This, of course, is aided by Brainstorms hiding the tutors for a couple of turns.

Suicide is also who the Misdirections work well against.

EDIT DUE TO MISREADING:
If your having this much trouble with suicide add City of Brass and green so you can Regrowth Balance.  The old school method of Time Twister could work as well.

I agree with the 3 Decrees adjacent the Humilities. But I also believe you should be running at least 2 Fire/Ice, if not more.

One Underground Sea should be cut to free up space for a 3rd Volcanic Island. These are absolutly critical games 2 and 3 in the control mirror as well as other matchups like Fish.

Also, Toad is correct, don't make the mistake of underestimating the power of Balance against any deck.

The Isochrons, while good, don't need to be a three of if you are going to run them. Two is more than enough and I like zero myself. I wouldn't consider them until the number of Null Rods in the format drops. The mana argument is somewhat negligible since it can be activated at end of turn but even with Fire/Ice or Brainstorm imprinted it's still just a Jalum tome that costs 2 less to cast and activate for the price of a card from your hand. Not to mention it's cheaper casting cost makes it even easier to misplay. If you want a replacement for Tome I recommend Future Sight or even Mind's Eye; if you're playing in a slow enough metagame.
