Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Premium Article] The Fastest Deck Ever, By Far

What are the reasons for leaving Mind's Desire out of the maindeck?
Perhaps I should have elaborated. I've tested the deck. The deck's so loaded with Tutors that it doesn't need the Desire to win consistently. However, saying that getting to 6 mana is too hard is incorrect. With 8 Rituals and Eggs/Chromatic Spheres, I find that getting 4UU for Desire isn't too hard. The philosophy of Desire here is good. With 4 Tendrils in the deck and only 3 land, a Desire for storm count of 4 or 5 on Desire will probably win right there, either by storming into 2 Tendrils or any of the multiple tutors.

First off, where did I say that I wasn't running 4 smokestack? Of course they are an auto-include. My point was that welding stack in and out so you don't have to sac anything while they do is generally better than welding wire.
You mean if you've got two welders or two Smokestacks right?

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Is Uba Mask necessary in Ubastax?

While this is true, "Ubastax" has somewhat evolved. In my updated list, smokestack is questionable, and Uba Mask is not. Smokestack is good, but the deck doesnt' have to function like a Stax deck. I try and just play control, and slow up the board and their hand until I can use Jester's Cap.
In testing, I've had trouble with this game plan. Tier 1 decks have already begun evolving so they won't lose to a Jester's Cap activation. Many tier 2 and lower decks are simply unfazed by Jester's Cap. I've lost several games in testing after I've activated Cap twice on an opponent in situations where it really doesn't matter. I feel that the deck really wants something that's going to affect the board - affect the present game state. But this is a different argument. For the time being, I think I'll continue running UbaMask. It's extremely good verus a wide swath of decks - obviously ones that look to draw cards. The fact that it combos nicely with Bazaar and, to a lesser extent, Goblin Welder, make it currently worthwhile.

I am really sorry to be off topic slightly, but I had to ask this question:
How do you not get screwed by someone just playing Null Rod?
That deck really does get screwed. It's not optimal. However, I do like Mindslaver in Stax. Activating Slaver with a Smokestack out can spell doom for the opponent.

I like where this thread is going.
I've been messing around with Metalworker builds for a couple months. I feel they could be the new direction of mono-colored Stax. I sported a Mindslaver or two, and also 2 Staff of Domination as an "Oops, I win" factor and a sweet late game topdeck. Plus, I've found the random Staff of Domination invaluable when staring down an opposing fattie.
I ran a couple each of Ancient Tomb and City of Traitors. They worked really well too, although they necessitate Crucible of Worlds due to their vulnerability. I also ran a couple Darksteel Citadels that could sit in my hand and give two Metalworker mana.
This is probably bad, bad, bad but if I'm running Mono-Red, no Uba Mask, and Bazaar of Baghdad, I'm reaaaaallly tempted to run Squee, Goblin Nabob. What do you think?
EDIT: Here's one aggro-combo deck I've been running for about a month. This deck is completely colorless, which will elicit VERY negative responses from all of you guys. The deck works pretty well, but it's FAR from optimal. You can take a gander if you so choose.
// Lands 4 Mishra's Workshop 3 Darksteel Citadel 4 Wasteland 1 Strip Mine 1 Tolarian Academy 2 City of Traitors 1 Ancient Tomb
// Creatures 4 Metalworker 4 Juggernaut 2 Triskelion
// Spells 1 Mox Sapphire 4 Smokestack 4 Crucible of Worlds 4 Chalice of the Void 1 Black Lotus 3 Staff of Domination 1 Sol Ring 4 Thran Dynamo 1 Mox Ruby 1 Mox Jet 1 Mox Emerald 1 Mox Pearl 4 Tangle Wire 3 Mindslaver 1 Trinisphere
// Sideboard SB: 4 Tormod's Crypt SB: 4 Sphere of Resistance SB: 4 Pithing Needle SB: 3 Defense Grid

I feel that I could goldfish .5 to 1 turn faster if I consistently had enough black mana to activate more Ashen Ghouls. Does anyone share this feeling?
Each game, I end up only being able to activate one Ashen Ghoul per turn. If could have activated three Ashen Ghouls instead of one, I'd have been able to push through 6 more damage for the win. Is there anything we can do to account for this? How do you all do with this?

Some friends over on the SCG forums were talking about how Black Lotus really hadn't been that great during testing. I haven't tested enough to be sure. I think the mana burn factor was their main argument as well. Also, they felt that truly a better card could go there. Maybe another tutor or something? Like I said, I don't know what the right call is because I haven't tested.
Also, a list over there ran Nether Shadow. Free creatures are nice, so I thought it might be a possibility. If anything, it's more fuel for Ichorid. However, I doubt there's room for it in this deck.

UbaStax's critical turns come between turns 3 and 5, normally. The deck normally reserves turns 1 and 2 for mana ramping, Wastelanding, Chalicing, and other formalities. Turns 3-5 are normally where the business gets done. UbaStax uses these turns to put the meat on the board. E.g. Jester's Cap, Uba Mask, Smokestack. I don't recall seeing these paragraphs in your original post. You must have editted it. I think you mean to get to turns 3-5 in good position, which is totally true. Actually, that was in my original post. I edited the post after I realized I'd included some inaccurate info about Stax in tournaments. I deleted a couple lines of text, but nothing that affected my position. I agree, turn 1 is huge. If you can, you open with Shop, Mox, Chalice at 0, and Crucible of Worlds/Smokestack/etc., by all means, open with that. However, if Force of Will gets in the way, or if I simply don't hold such broken plays, turns 3 and 4, and 5 to a lesser extent, are where the meat of the deck drops. Tangle Wire protects any mid-game plays from Drains, and also denies my opponent the mana to do anything porductive (if they're not playing Drain). If they can't play anything, that turn 4 Smokestack activation is going to hurt a lot (assuming you weren't able to play Smokey on turn 1). You're right, though, Sir Evenpence, a hand without a strong turn 1 play does not work. I've suggested Tangle Wire as the means to finishing off the opponent mid-game.

4 Tangle Wire was an auto-include in the Stax decks of old.
Today, two major Stax archetypes exist. There is the mono-red UbaStax version, including Jester's Cap versions. Then there is the 5 color Stax version. The decks operate, in many ways, very differently from each other. 5c Stax has more broken plays, via tutors. UbaStax is a deck focused on pure synergy and less brokenness.
Many decks don't run Tangle Wire. I feel Tangle Wire deserves a spot in UbaStax.
As a disclaimer - in no way am I a better player or deck designer than Robert Vroman. If he doesn't include Tangle Wire, there must be some very good reason why. These opinions come solely from my testing and own inferences.
So clearly, turns 3-5 can be the most dangerous for Stax if the opponent uses disruption. Stax really wants these turns for itself. Once Stax has used its three turns to build its board, the opponent is at a severe disadvantage and will likely lose. The key for Stax is surviving until turn 5, playing its threats, and dealing with opponents early threats.
Through my testing, I feel Tangle Wire accomplishes these tasks excellently. It gums up opponent's resources. It denies combo the mana to go off and denies control the mana to cast spells. In the Stax mirror, it creates tempo advantage.
Tangle Wire works. It combos well with Goblin Welder, and has huge synergy with Smokestack. A lot of times it's a lock component. But most importantly, it gives Stax the freedom to get through the critical turns 3-5

True Believer is an amazing sideboard card. In testing, I had 4 sideboard for matchups against Storm Combo, Gifts Ungiven (counters Gifts), Ichorid and other decks running black disruption. It's also useful against Mindslaver and Jester's Cap.
Really, I considered him for the maindeck because his applications were so broad.
Be careful, though. Ancestral Recall doesn't work too well under him.
