aka: How to win a Masticore in 10 hours.
The Ontario Vintage Championships
I've played Vengeur Masque/Ninja Mask over the last 6 monthes and was starting to get a little bored with the deck. Well, actually I was starting to get fed up with losing with my current build of Ninja (I'm going to go back to Vengeur). With all the R/G beats, Oshawa Stompy, Madness and other scrubby aggro decks going around in the local tournements leading up to this, I wanted something I thought would wipe their clocks as well as having a good chance against control. So I went with a deck I played only once last year.

I tested the crap out of it Thursday ('till 4:30am) and Friday ('till 2:00am) and I ended up with about a 80% win/loss ratio. Lam even "banned me" from his basement because I wasn't losing. The day of the tournement, I even managed to borrow the missing Ruby which was originally a third Gemstone Mine.
I arrive at the tournement before my mates which allows me to do some trading beforehand. People slowly start arriving and the usual loaning of cards ensues.
There are a lot of themanadrainers at the tourney: myself, Shockwave, SpecialK, wuaffiliate, bebe, Petko, Moridar, balzary, mtgmooner. I find out that dicemanxx isn't going to make it and Razor, who was supposed to carpool with some friends but was a noshow, ran in with seconds left in registration. MIA as well was Razvan.
The tournement starts at 1pm and they announce 7 rounds with top 8 and 66 people in attendance.
Round 1 Greg Oshawa Stompy
w00t - A deck I should win easily in 2....well that remains to be seen. I've played Greg in draft a number of times and this was his first type 1 tournement.
Game 1 - Simple - I draw no rectors, no tutors, and no combo pieces to hard cast. I lose.
Game 2 - I combo him to death with ease. Nothing to report here.
Game 3. I Paris away a hand with Mox, Mox, Lotus, Academy, Dual, Dual, Ritual. For the rest, see game 1.
A glorious start to a glorious tournement. Oh well - can't lose again as I figure top 8 cut-off will be 5/1/1 minimum.
Matches: 0/1
Round 2 Shockwave Landstill
Game 1 - I take game 1 after resolving a rector with therapy in my graveyard and bargaining down to 1 life to get the Illusions out.
I side in my Seal of Cleansings.
Game 2 - Rich gets some manlands down and manages to not attack with the Factories into my Rector but does attack with the Conclaves. I never draw the right combination of Seals and Therapies to get Rector to trigger out Bargain and I lose.
Game 3 - I go first turn Cabal Therapy for Force of Will, Rector, flashback Therpy bringing out Bargain. Second turn Illusions. Rich scoops.
Not a good day for Rich as he is now 0/2 and most likely out of top 8 contention.
Matches: 1/1
Brian Phan (Lam Phan's brother) at this point had his Food Chain Goblins deck stolen. I had loaned cards for that deck, but nothing like Petko who had loaned 2 pieces of power for it. (Beta if I remember right).
Round 3 Chris aka. "Jose" Power Conduit/Decree of Silence
Game 1 - I attack his hand early - seeing an Island, Plains, Teferi's Moat, and 2 Power Conduits. Unsure of what he had in mind, I take a Conduit. He mises and drops an Arcane Laboratory. I hard cast an Illusions hoping for the donate, but he messes with me the next turn and I am forced to let the Illusions die. He eventually gets Decree of Silence - to which I respond with Lim-Dul's Vault and a scoop.
In come the Seals.
Game 2 - He drops an early Seal of Cleansing, followed up with a Sterling Grove. I manage to get Bargain on the board and eventually find enough Seals to take out his. I drop the Illusions and search for the Rushing River forgetting about the Seal in my hand. I take the win.
Game 3 - I go all broken fairly early before he can drop a Seal.
Matches: 2/1
Round 4 Enric R/G Beats
Game 1 - I attack his hand early and combo out a few turns later.
I board in Form of the Dragon and BEBs.
Game 2 - I Rector out Form fairly early. I go through an upkeep not assigning damage. My Form is Japanese so I was a little foggy on the exact wording of the card. I call the judge over and ask if it's a MAY ability. His states I must deal damage during my upkeep. I take a warning for the error and deal the damage to Enric. I'm a little off the ball here and forget about his Lavamancer on the board, which makes short work of me after I lose a Mana Crypt flip. I SHOULD HAVE KILLED THAT ABOMINABLE LAVAMANCER! For this, I nominate Form of the Dragon as my Worse card of the day.
Shocked over my mistake, I de-side the Form and proceed to game 3.
Game 3 - Well, there's not much to report here. I got the mana flood. The only exceptional memory of this game is the fact the I managed to never lose a flip of the coin from my Mana Crypt. 6 times in a row he would call heads and I would flip a tails.
Matches: 2/2
At this point the side tournement for The Abyss is going to start shortly so I drop from the main event and join up. Shockwave, Razor, & mtgmooner all had terrible outings today as well and join in.
The side tourney starts and we have 14 people playing. They announce 3 rounds of swiss with top 8. Probably to keep the timing parallel to the main event.
Round 1 Steve
Steve never showed up for round 1. In fact, I think he wasn't there for the entire side tournement. 15 minutes later I get my match victory and do some trading with dicemanxx, who showed up shortly after round 2 of the main event.
Matches: 1/0
Round 2 George R/G Beats
Game 1 - George draws his hand and keeps. I draw my hand and see a Blue Elemental Blast. I haven't de-sideboarded from round 4 of the main tourney. I call the judge and recieve a game loss for my error.
Games 2 & 3 - Nothing to report here other then comboing out and killing hin.
Matches: 2/0
I figure that I would be able to draw with my next opponent and ease into top 8.
Round 3 Mike B/g Void
I get paired down and Mike is 1/1 so far and can't take the draw so we end up playing it out.
Game 1 - An early void locks me down.
Game 2 - See game 1.
Matches: 2/1
Not as good as I had hoped, but still good enough for top 8.
Top 8 Nick Enchantress
Nick said it was Academy, but it was Enchantress.
Game 1 - I combo off fairly quickly for the win.
Game 2 - He drops an early Argivian Enchantress along with a couple of Enchantresses Presences. He's tapped out and passes over the turn. I know I have to win this turn. It took my 20 minutes to do so, but I pulled it off. I did manage to Time Walk so technically it took me 2 turns.
Top 4 Mike (again)
Game 1 - I duress and stare into a 1 land, 2 Ritual, 2 Void and other stuff hand. I take a ritual preventing the first turn Void. Mike mises a second land and resolves a Void. At this point, he manages to get land screwed and I eventually deal with the void with my Rushing River and take the win.
I side in Form of the Dragon, hoping that experience is truely the best teacher.
Game 2 - I rector out Form fairly early and after realizing he has not too much to deal with a 7 CC enchantment, he scoops.
I then nominate Form for my MVP card for the day.
Top 2 Andrew Culver Keeper
Thankfully, the top 2 match for the main event is happening at the same time as this one so everyone is over there watching them instead of us, keeping the pressure down.
Game 1 - I get raped. Andrew pretty much has every answer for every threat I played (who maindecks Seal of Cleansing in Keeper, really?)
Game 2 - Rinse and Repeat game 1. I end the tournement by Seal of Cleansing his Sol Ring and offering my hand.
Second Place is a Minty Masticore.
I finish up some last minute trading and look at the clock. It's 11:20pm and now I'm looking to an hour drive to play 3 hours of Halo tonight and Type 1 in Waterloo tomorrow.
The usual Props and Slops.
Props Wayne - for putting on the event. May the attendance only rise for you. I look forward to your Type 2 tournement. Razvan, Razor, wu, Lam & family - for all the mad testing we did. The winners in the main event - you guys earned it. Andrew Culver - as did you. The guys from out of province - for your dedication to the game. And everyone else who showed up.
Slops. The arses who stole Lam's brothers Food Chain Goblins deck.
