You see the problem I've been having is not the initial Dryad or Flash, but the follow-up. Flash can easily rebuild with Scroll and Mystical, so I feel like Extirpate is good inclusion. As decks focus more on specific kills, I think the card is becoming more powerful.

Misdirection only hurts Flash if your holding a counter also. If you have UU open, you can Drain. Still, that means you have had two main phases OR have drew a Lotus/Sapphire/Petal. If you don't have the Drain, you need FOUR blue cards, one being Force and the other being Misdirection. I'm not sold on it's merit maindeck.

And I usually don't tap out for Cutpurse unless I'm not holding Drain, or I don't want them to think I'm holding Drain.

I can try to work on the inclusion of Chalice, but right now I had been looking at the CoV/Will/EtW combinations as a good win, and Chalice usually shuts that off. I don't know, I'll see what happens. I'm looking at a Stackless Stax deck right now also, so we'll see.

I'm 2 inches from locking this topic.

EKM, your last post was totally useless. It served no purpose, and his deck shared just as much with "Keeper" as yours. But the point is, that Keeper is an absolute term that I got rid of successfully for a while (but like everything evil, it never dies). It just plain doesn't make sense.

Firstly, it references a Mike Long deck from almost 10 years ago with Elemental Augury. Secondly, it's such an ambiguous name that bringing it up as a point of conversation is an utter waste of time. Things are simpler to worry more about the deck not sucking (the archetype on a whole, not anyone's specific list), and less about what is Keeper.

Consider that a brief lesson is awful naming conventions and the perils of using them. Also, consider this a verbal warning for the spammish nature of your post.

I suggest this thread get some content worth reading and replying to. Otherwise, I'm going to lock it so it falls out of sight.

My 2 cents:

The current metagame is too fast for Dark Confidant. If it's too fast for Dark Confidant, it's certainly WAY too fast for Dimir Cutpurse. Your plan against GaT is more of a fantasy than a reality. I did the Extirpate thing and it never falls into place in practice, like you'd like to think it would in theory. 4 Force of Will is NO LONGER ENOUGH free counters for any deck to run comfortably. If Flash runs twice as many free counters, it stacks the odds against you. In my version, I run this as a disruption suite:

    4 Force of Will
    2 Misdirection
    4 Brainstorm
    4 Mana Drain
    2 Chalice of the Void
    3 Duress

THAT is the level of dedication to disruption that you have to play in order to properly assume the defensive.

I don't quite understand why you have Brainstorm in your disruption package. The only differences in our packages are 2 Chalice, 1 Drain, and 2 MD Misdirection. I have 2 Misdirection in the side because I find it useful rarely (counter wars and Ancestral Recalls). So far I really haven't had that much of a problem because game 2 I can board up to 4 Duress 2 Misdirection 3 Mana Drain 4 Force of Will 2 Mind Twist along with 2 StP 2 Echoing Truth to slow down if they do get out the Slivers.

Cutpurse is usually cast turn 2. It is slow, I know. But once it starts hitting the swing in card advantage is well worth it. Trinket Mage is slow on paper, but the deck utilizing it still does well. I have alot of disruption and can protect/stop threats long enough to get the Cutpurse online.

I'm playing EtW because it can help chump Slivers and Dryads and seems less venerable then TinkerPlatz with the current sideboards that Ichorid, GAT, and Flash are playing. TinkerPlatz also takes two spots for what is pretty much one kill, whereas EtW is a one card slot that just needs another spell or two to be cast. I've been playtesting with it as a single to make room for Explosives and it's working fine.

Mind Twist is just as much a bomb now as it used to be. Barring Ichorid, most decks do not want you to cast a Twist for 2 or 3. When you start with a turn 1 Duress, turn 2 Mox Monkey, turn 3 Twist, you can secure control with ease. Even if it's Forced, you take out two cards. Misdirection still is not popular enough to make it risky.

Sorry about the "not Keeper comment". Where I play, Keeper refers to a 4-5c Control deck that was based on a solid tutoring base to find huge bombs and answers in any situation. I didn't see that in Ufactor's deck. That was my misunderstanding.

I think Extirpate is a great MD singleton because it's a good responce to Will, and also is just amazing if you can counter a Dryad/Flash/Oath. It seals the deal after a Duress for the second two, and spells GG after a blown Engineered Explosive against GAT.

Scroll is an awesome tutor because it grabs Mystical Tutor, Ancestral Recall, Chain of Vapor, or Force/Drain. It can effectively tutor for a Bomb, a draw engine, a removal spell/combo enginge, or a hard counter. That's amazing flexibility for just 1U, easily cast turn 1 if needed.

SB: 1 Deep Analysis
SB: 1 Duress
SB: 1 Engineered Explosives
SB: 4 Leyline of the Void
SB: 3 Pithing Needle

That isn't Keeper. That's just a control deck.
4  Eternal Formats / Creative / Keeper-ish 4cControl on: July 31, 2007, 12:18:01 am
I started playing with a list last week. Here's what I've got:

// Lands
    4  Polluted Delta
    1  Tundra
    3  Volcanic Island
    4  City of Brass
    4  Underground Sea
    1  Library of Alexandria

// Creatures
    3  Gorilla Shaman
    3  Dimir Cutpurse

// Spells
    4  Force of Will
    2  Merchant Scroll
    3  Duress
    1  Swords to Plowshares
    1  Ancestral Recall
    3  Brainstorm
    3  Mana Drain
    1  Mox Jet
    1  Yawgmoth's Will
    2  Cunning Wish
    1  Mox Emerald
    2  Mind Twist
    1  Mox Pearl
    1  Mox Ruby
    1  Mox Sapphire
    1  Black Lotus
    1  Lotus Petal
    1  Sol Ring
    1  Demonic Tutor
    1  Vampiric Tutor
    1  Mystical Tutor
    1  Extirpate
    1  Chain of Vapor
    2  Empty the Warrens

// Sideboard
SB: 1  Duress
SB: 1  Swords to Plowshares
SB: 4  Leyline of the Void
SB: 2  Misdirection
SB: 1  Echoing Truth
SB: 1  Extirpate
SB: 2  Massacre
SB: 1  Hurkyl's Recall
SB: 1  Empty the Warrens
SB: 1  Disenchant

The deck had a good disruption package and basically uses it early and then drops a bomb, aka Twist for their hand. There's a wishboard for increased flexibility. It does well against combo and control, but terrible against random aggro (like R/G beatz or Goblins). I'm thinking of a single Moat to be old-school, or adding in TinkerPlatz. Usually EtW hits for 2-3 storm, which is all that is needed. Cutpurse is awesome card advantage engine, but again it is bad versus aggro. I feel like Ichorid is a 2-1 match almost every time. Fish is decent because I can match beats and have a better disruption package (in my opinion). Flash is good because I have alot of disruption against them and can chump Slivers. GAT is a bit tougher but my win can come earlier and if you can counter/kill a Dryad you can tutor for Extirpate aka GG. Stax is decent because I can rush permenants with EtW and moxen and I can kill theirs with Shaman, plus Wish for Recall. Long/Gifts/TPS/Random storm is an awesome match up because if I take them to turn 3 or 4 I can always win, and I almost always can stall it that long. I haven't been able to test against Bomberman but I'm assuming it's my hardest match.

And if someone could help me fit in Engineered Explosives, I'd love them forever.
5  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Is Keeper dead for ever? on: July 30, 2007, 09:59:48 am
I started playing with a list a few days ago. Here's what I've got:

// Lands
    4  Polluted Delta
    1  Tundra
    3  Volcanic Island
    4  City of Brass
    4  Underground Sea
    1  Library of Alexandria

// Creatures
    3  Gorilla Shaman (1)
    3  Dimir Cutpurse

// Spells
    4  Force of Will
    2  Merchant Scroll
    3  Duress
    1  Swords to Plowshares
    1  Ancestral Recall
    3  Brainstorm
    3  Mana Drain
    1  Mox Jet
    1  Yawgmoth's Will
    2  Cunning Wish
    1  Mox Emerald
    2  Mind Twist
    1  Mox Pearl
    1  Mox Ruby
    1  Mox Sapphire
    1  Black Lotus
    1  Lotus Petal
    1  Sol Ring
    1  Demonic Tutor
    1  Vampiric Tutor
    1  Mystical Tutor
    1  Extirpate
    1  Chain of Vapor
    2  Empty the Warrens

// Sideboard
SB: 1  Duress
SB: 1  Swords to Plowshares
SB: 4  Leyline of the Void
SB: 2  Misdirection
SB: 1  Echoing Truth
SB: 1  Extirpate
SB: 2  Massacre
SB: 1  Hurkyl's Recall
SB: 1  Empty the Warrens
SB: 1  Aura Blast

The deck has a pretty good card advantage engine through Cutpurse, which is a bomb. I have a decent toolbox through Cunning Wish and has a nice control package. The only problem I've found is dealing with stuff that reaches play, but I've been experimenting with a few removal packages. Twist is a nice bomb, and EtW seems like a good finisher in the testing thus far.
6  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Ur Landstill on: July 19, 2007, 10:29:04 pm
Has anyone considered Manstill, with it's own set of Magus of the Moon. It seems like bad synergy at first, but it's more like playing the deck in phases. Use the Standstill to stall and start swinging with lands, then when it breaks throw down the Magus and screw stuff up.
7  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: URBana Fish--The Solution to the metagame on: July 03, 2007, 11:43:11 am
Has anyone considered Overtaker? 1U 1/1, with the ability to grab creatures despite their size for just 3U and a card. It can hold off GAT when they are on the attack, or grab it and smash face with their own Dryad. It can play tricks with Welder and Mindcensor, and also can steal Oath creatures. It could be a house, and it's hard to counter because it can drop quick and it's ability is only susceptable to Stifle effects, which have been cut back on lately.

EDIT: Did I mentain that if you have a Lotus, you can steal a Salvager and play your whole hand?
8  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: The status of CS on: July 02, 2007, 12:04:51 am
I've been testing a Control Slaver build with Trinket Mage and a toolkit to help it control Ichorid, Flash, and GAT. It's still not running too smooth, but I'm hoping I can fix that.

Umm, isn't that called bomberman??

Since when did Bomberman run Welder, Slaver, or even any red?

I think Trinket Mage should be looked at in other decks, as it is a great control utility that helps beat early, a problem I have found with CS.

11  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: GT - Gush Tendrils on: June 23, 2007, 10:38:12 am
I've been testing a Hightide/Gush deck...50% of the time I win turn 2, 20% of the time turn 3, and after that I fizzle out 30% of the time. That 30% isn't sounding too good.
12  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Premium Article] The Mean Deck Solution to the Vintage Metagame on: June 19, 2007, 11:47:10 pm
The deck is definitely cool. UW Control is good against it, so I hope people play this deck alot...maybe my deck can start doing well.

I question Mind's Desire. How often is it more effective than say, Grim Tutor -> Yawgmoth's Will?

17  Vintage Community Discussion / Card Creation Forum / Re: Urza's Dream on: June 18, 2007, 09:26:27 pm
I think all the clunky limitations junk up the card.  You can simplify them with, "If this comes into play, if you did not pay its mana cost with mana produced by an artifact, sacrifice it."  I'd also remove the Legendary, although it is flavorful.
I have to admit, I don't like either current wording.  Neither fit Urza.  What do RFG cards have to do with Urza.

RFG = Creating new things never seen or thought of before. They're "outside the game". I always thought of sideboards as the planeswalkers developing new spells and machines to defeat the opponnet.

Your wording is so simple, I never thought of that.
18  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: UW Control...it's a weird one. on: June 15, 2007, 11:02:34 pm
If you don't typically use Chalices after the first one you may consider a couple of Thirsts instead of Standstill. Also dead Moxen after a Chalice at zero are good thirst fodder. Not to say that Standstill is bad but they can be dead sometimes. Thirst on the other hand is only every actually dead when you don't have three mana. Standstill can be dead if you are behind on the board and need to find an answer to a threat (tog, big dryad, DC, etc). With 4 Factories and 4 Meddling Mages you may not need another finisher provided you can controll long enough. Just a thought.

Also why no Library?

Star

Library with alot of ditch counters doesn't work well.

Thirst costs alot of mana and doesn't work the same way psychologically as Standstill. Standstill buys you time and eventually 3 cards...Thirst will never buy any time, and never three cards.
19  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: UW Control...it's a weird one. on: June 15, 2007, 05:26:34 pm
I like the list, it is definitely interesting. I have tested other control decks in the past using comandeer as a 1 or 2 of, but a 4-of is impressive.

A few comments on the list:

I am not sold at all on Nix, because it is rarely better than annul, which sees little to no play, for good reason. Also, it hurts your chalice at 1, which is a beating against most decks now.

Daze also seems weak, because the tempo hit can be bad for a control deck like this, and it is just too dead to draw late.

I agree that angel is hard on the mana base, but it seems like it fits well into the deck, although there might be something better. Have you tested decree as a finisher, especially now with standstill in the deck?

Also, in relation to the draw engine, why no FoF? That card is insane in pure control, getting you basically the most cards ever from 1 spell. It is especially good in a deck as redundant as this.

Adding a few more off color moxen to the mana base seems like a good idea to me. Yes, it conflicts with chalice, but it also enables turn 1 scrolls and standstills more often, which is a good thing. Also, adding more moxen opens up the option of mana leak as a turn-1 hard counter.

That's the things I can think of off the top of my head, take them with a grain of salt, or consider and test, your call.

With Gush, FoW, and Pacts so popular, there is no way I'd drop Nix. It's amazing.

I'd add FoF if I could find room.

I don't like the idea of more Moxen...it opens up more hate against me.

Decree takes WAY too much mana to do anything.
20  Vintage Community Discussion / Card Creation Forum / Re: Urza's Dream on: June 10, 2007, 12:10:43 pm
In the newest version, it can't be cheated into play without an instant speed win. I'll make sure to post it on the top post so everyone can see it. Because it can't be cheated, it's not insane. It's hard to cast and I think I'm going to change the wording to "remove it from the game INSTEAD". That closes the window.
21  Vintage Community Discussion / Card Creation Forum / Re: Urza's Dream on: June 09, 2007, 11:24:40 am
Urza's Dream      {2} {U} {U} {U}
Legendary Enchantment
You may only use mana produced by artifacts to play Urza's Dream.
When Urza's Dream comes into play, if it was not played from your hand, remove Urza's Dream from the game.
You may play cards from outside the game as if they are in your hand.
As Natzre entered the planeswalker's dream, he was overwhelmed with the brilliance that was Urza.

What about that instead? Sideboard/RFG instead of library...
22  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: UW Control...it's a weird one. on: June 09, 2007, 11:22:03 am
Everything except the three mentioned permanents (MM, Wastes, LV), said cards will be completely irrelevent to Ichorid. Sorceries and Instants will assuredly be Cabal Therapy'd before they even do much of anything, so it is impossible for them to consistently be effective.

As long as Bazaar of Baghdad has been activated atleast once (provided that 1-2 Dredgers were discarded), they will have no real further need for it's ability. Although it may be an overall slower kill, Ichorid is still able to function using Dredge only during their draw step. Also be aware that mana-producing lands are never actually played until they are planning to cast a spell, to avoid Strip-effects, which also allows players to really take advantage of their "Cleanup" step, by discarding Trolls, Ichorids, Bridges, et cetera.

Meddling Mage is only able to shut off one of their many threats/answers. It may be able to shut down Chain of Vapor/ Emerald Charm/ Reverent Silence, but it can still use one of the others, or draw into the newly-added Contagion.

You may have different threats to the deck, but I can't see all of them effecting Ichorid the way you think it would. UW Fish uses all of these cards too, but being a Fish and Ichorid player, I can say that seeing someone discard a Stinkweed Imp is the last thing I want to see.

I play Ichorid also. I don't know if you've tested against this deck at all, but all I know is that my record when playing Ichorid against this 1-4 and my record playing this against Ichorid is 5-2.

Zulander - No room. Not strong enough to remove the cards already in the deck.
23  Vintage Community Discussion / Card Creation Forum / Re: Urza's Dream on: June 08, 2007, 11:33:04 am
I just called it a Legendary Planeswalker Enchantment to be cool. I can take it out.

As for playing with it revealed, I wanted to be able to keep it in the same order. How would I word that?

Right now, the wording could be:

Urza's Dream  {2} {U} {U} {U} {U}
Legendary Enchantment
You may only use mana produced by artifacts to play Urza's Dream.
When Urza's Dream comes into play, if it was not played from your hand, remove Urza's Dream from the game.
Play with your library revealed.
You may play cards in your library as if they are in your hand.
When Urza's Dream leaves play, you lose the game.
As Natzre entered the planeswalker's dream, he was overwhelmed with the brilliance that was Urza.

It really shouldn't leave play when you can use your whole deck, but if it does, you lose. Solves some problems.

About milling, I have no idea. I would want the library to be like the graveyard...it stays in order yet it is revealed to everyone. That way you would draw in the proper order and mill in the proper order.
24  Vintage Community Discussion / Card Creation Forum / Re: Night of the Living Dead on: June 07, 2007, 11:05:51 pm

Urza's Dream must be played from your hand.

26  Vintage Community Discussion / Card Creation Forum / Re: Stax-like Equipment on: June 07, 2007, 09:25:58 pm
My principle concern with this card is whether it leads to us "needing" to create seven more such swords to represent all of the colour pairs.  I liked the ideas that were being discussed with regards to a Sword of (pro green/pro artifact), but I'm not sure I like the scope of this card.  Why, for example, should there be two swords that grant protection from red?

Well technically, one other allied sword would be fine. I use GR, so you could make UB or UW. There are two enemy color swords, so you'd need two allied color swords.
27  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: UW Control...it's a weird one. on: June 07, 2007, 09:23:09 pm
Aside from Leyline of the Void, how does this deck beat Ichorid?

4 Meddling Mage
3 Nix
4 Force of Will
4 Commandeer
1 Tinker
1 Platinum Angel
2 Daze
4 Leyline of the Void
2 Echoing Truth
4 Wasteland
1 Strip Mine

How do they plan on removing a Leyline with all of that disruption? If you haven't noticed, a Tinkered Angel is game against Ichorid if you have any disruption to stop a Grudge. Meddling Mage for Cabal Therapy shuts down a sacrifice outlet for the Narcs, and Truth pretty much bounces all of their Zombies. I've almost never lost a game postboard.
28  Vintage Community Discussion / Card Creation Forum / Stax-like Equipment on: June 07, 2007, 11:35:30 am
Sword of Seeds and Sulfer  {3}
Artifact - Equipment
Equipped creatures gets +2/+2 and protection from green and red.
Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, you may put target card from your graveyard on top of your library, and then may have each player sacrifice a permanant.
Equip:  {2}

Just like SoFI, it has two 1cc spell effects. However, they function very well together to make a sort of one-sided Smokestack. It also can be used like Crucible with Strip effects. Too broken? I think it's what aggro needs to be strong again in T1.5/T1.
29  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: UW Control...it's a weird one. on: June 06, 2007, 11:36:18 pm
People really need to test this deck. And someone who can afford it, play it in a tournament. It would cost me too much, hell...in real life I play Ichorid. It would cost me $300 I can't afford to spend right now, but I wish I could.

Lands and Mana///23
4 Wasteland
R Strip Mine
4 Mishra's Factory
2 Island
4 Tundra
4 Flooded Strand
R Mox Pearl
R Mox Sapphire
R Black Lotus
R Sol Ring

Beats///6
1 Platinum Angel
1 Exalted Angel
4 Meddling Mage

Control///20
R Balance
1 Crucible of Worlds
1 Swords to Plowshares
2 Daze
3 Nix
4 Commandeer
4 Force of Will
4 Chalice of the Void

Fuel///11
2 Merchant Scroll
2 Standstill
R Mystical Tutor
R Ancestral Recall
R Tinker
4 Brainstorm

Sideboard///15
4 Leyline of the Void
4 Energy Flux
2 Old Man of the Sea
2 Echoing Truth
3 Null Rod

I think this may be close to optimum. Nix is awesome because it counters Pacts/Forces/Lotus/Gush/Dread Return/Therapy, and those are all bombs in the current T1. I've loved it so far. I almost never used Drain mana, and it was hard on my manabase.

Standstill is working pretty good, and Gush wasn't really doing much but be late game draw that I could have paid for anyways.

I want to replace Angel because it's not very synergenic with the deck and the WW cost can be hard sometimes. I haven't found a great option yet.

EDIT: This may sound ridiculous, but what about Possessed Aven? I'd drop an Island for an Underground Sea and then I'd have a Tog/Fish killer thats a 5 turn flying clock for just 4 mana.

Sword of Seeds and Sulfer   {3}
Artifact - Equipment
Equipped creatures gets +2/+2 and protection from green and red.
Whenever equipped creature deals combat damage to a player, you may put target card from your graveyard on top of your library, and then may have each player sacrifice a permanant.
Equip:  {2}

Both 1cc effects, but awesome as a semi-Stax.
