Mixing Mike: It doesn't kill it.

Well you maybe should re-read the initial post.
Pentavus obviously kills Morphling dead.......
...and opposed to Cursed Totem and Humility it even kills the opponent ontop!

I wonder why nobody mentioned Pentavus yet. It flat out OWNS Morefling. Smile

Workshops provide inconsistent decks that don't win tournaments.

Are you serious?

((http://www.morphling.de/top8decks.php?id=177 14 players))

Smmenen its those kind of FALSE assertions which possibly keeps the larger crowd in your U.S. metagame off workshops.

Those tournaments were all sactioned. I think that even has some negative impact on the nr. of workshops played.

And its not only this but as Kenny reflected pretty well in his article its the sheer number of worshops appearing in ANY T8 lately. (GenCon Worlds anyone?)

Edit: From the top of my head - so dont flame too much plz *g*:
Off all those big tornament Smmmenen is mentioning which decks tended to be at the top of the crowd after the swiss?

Ric Flair: Charbelcher wins 40-50% of the time on turn one.

Thats not true !
Charbelcher kills around 10% on turn 1.
With that 40%-50% you probably mean that belcher puts the Blecher on turn 1 (for a turn 2 win during upkeep).

But still this makes Oxidize and other 1 mana answers possible (e.g. mogg salvage).
Also it allows for Stifle -> null rod on turn 2.

And a turn one win will NEVER be prevented by mishras workshop if the player piloting them lost the die-roll.

And honestly: with this article in mind its not the question wheter MW (+3sphere) can stop an extremely fast combo deck (which of course is a good thing for the format).
But its more wheter MW (in stax) can stop EVERY deck availlable and because of this screws the format.

And I think Kenny is altogether right with his article. Edit: And I hope the american proxy-based tournaments will prove this soon........

A reusable lotus is simply too good (on ANY benchmark). And the "drawback" lost a lot with the mirrodin block!
8  Vintage Community Discussion / Casual Forum / Deck for Specialized format on: August 27, 2004, 05:52:48 pm
I'd advice you to play enchantress or possibly some mask-based deck.

e.g. this:
http://grexin.shonic.net/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?s=d350fd05c45d802af8f0d2dbe5b89b82;act=ST;f=7;t=295

edit: Of course mana drains are only half the man without force.....

Turn One: Land, Mox, Mox, Wheel, Force of Will

Turn Two: Land, Returns. Mana Drain

Turn three: Land, Spiral, - resolves.

I still dont get the advantage of playing spells until the opponent runs out of counters, instead of playing xantid swarm MD and simply win the turn after.
Especially i dont get your "tempo" arguement.

my 2 cents

Masticor: @LoLinger: You have Problems with FCG when you play Slaver? ...mhm..OK

Not  really (though i lost my only 2 matches to aggro at the last tourney) but I think an early tog is more threatening than an early pent/angel which will meet artifact mutation anyway. Smile
Altogether i think tog just has the better matchup.

Quote
Wuffiliate: since when is tog good vs fcg?

I think its a good matchup. But I have 2 pern. deed MD (+1 SB) and i also have 3 BEB (SB) to match his REBs/lackeys game 2&3 which is for sure not a "standard" build.

I played Control-Slaver at the last tourney in Karlsruhe.

But i expected loooots of FCG. So I switched over to hulk this time. Since i think it has a better matchup vs. those pesky little red men.

At least I wouldnt say Slavery is too new of a deck *g*

JohnnyToxic: In agreement with most other posters here, I would have to say that, at least in Hulk, Sol Ring does not belong.

As I said before, I cant agree to that. For me sol ring is simply amazing.
Thats why i was desperate to hear why JP left it out. (Not to mention that those "most other peoples"(including you) didnt give any reasons either...)

Quote
smmenen: Sol Ring is awful. Mana Crypt is about a billion times better and you don't want to run both.

Saying so is ok. Giving reasons is better.

Quote
jpmeyer: Deep Analysis is in the deck because honestly the only deck that I think that Tog really has to worry about is the mirror.

No question vs. aggro the sol ring is just brutal since the deck you can easily abuse its mana (even in addition to crypt + all moxes + lotus).
So I'll try to focus on the control mirror.

Quote
jpmeyer: The problem with Sol Ring is that it costs mana to cast. Land doesn't.

Missing land drops aint much of an issue for me. But of course i totally understand your reasoning with oposing control decks in mind (e.g. the mirror). There you maybe dont want to intuition/AK aggressively and thatwhy CAN come in the situatuion of missing a land drop (in the cruicial first turns). But sol ring would at least be as good as a swamp here.

Quote
jpmeyer: Land, Sol Ring, go is not nearly as good as Land, Mox, because with Land, Mox you can still Duress or Mystical or whatever.....

True. But your chance to have any of those is only 40%. And to have Sol Ring its EVEN ONLY 12%. I dont think they concur too much on the opening hand.
Your chances to have a Mox are 47%. And this would allow for first turn Intuition (e.g. on Deep Anal) - thats at least a force of will from your opponent (if hes lucky to have one)!
On the other hand going intuition + drain backup on turn 3 is in many cases also force of will from your opponent (with him taping out in his turn).

Quote
jpmeyer: ...you don't have excess mana on turn 2 if you want to cast Cunning Wish or Intuition or whatever.

Hmm i always want to have excess mana with this deck
But seriously spending 4 mana is not that hard and you even have 1 more Deep Anal first game (- I could do merchant -> AK).

Anyway its good that not everybody plays the same deck *g*.
For me Sol Ring is amazing. And i am still very happy that my own 2 weeks old build is only 3 MD cards different from JPs newest "better version". (Since i could swear JP is playtesting like mad......)

Eastman: Not running Sol Ring is a mistake, as is cutting the green element from the deck, gutting the combo abilities of a build obviously streamlined to be as fast as possible.

eastman posted this on another tog thread already.
so at least i am not alone on that topic....
15  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / [Deck Discussion] JP Meyers newest Psychatog Variant on: February 11, 2004, 02:19:35 pm
*nods*
JP your build is amazing.

Though I really wonder why you guys dont like Sol Ring. Sure Crypt is superior. And yes - off color moxen are perfect aswell.
But I think Steven M. is right with claiming that this is a combo deck.
Basically you want to go Intuition/Knowlgedge asap, since its your fastest way to the lethal tog.
And honestly land drops are rarely an issue since you still put back lands often via brainstorm. (At least thats what happens to me - flame me for that if you want....  Embarassed)

On the other hand having less than 24 mana sources would be too much of a gamble imo.
Thatwhy i run a mana base like this:
-swamp +sol ring
-island +tropical island (mostly because of SB xantid swarms)

[The only card difference from there on is:
-deep anal (2 in SB) +merchant scroll
But thats another topic.....]

Quote
jpmeyer: Not care THAT much since as long as you get your Time Walk effect, the Mox has done its job. Furthermore, it adds little bits more damage to your Tog.

So JP why not all of them? (crypt + 7 solomoxen)
