1  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / what can fish do against oath? on: October 31, 2004, 08:56:26 am
Ina U/R Fish build you can put bouncers and/or gilded drake to win against oath.dec, i think sigil of sleep is a good choice only if we got a lavamancer or suqata because most oath run flying creatures, against wich waterfront bouncer + gilded is a better choice
2  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / [DECK] Italian Gay Red Fish - looking for advice on: October 27, 2004, 03:51:47 pm
There no competitive versions of oath.dec in our meta and i think that it won't be such a real problem for fish untill it became a diffused archetype (and i think this won't happen  Twisted Evil )

exatcly!!!

and sometimes you must/can pitch it to force of will or use it on other player's end of turn to prepare a big yawgmoth will (for example taking atog, wish and walk...)
4  Eternal Formats / Creative / UBr tog on: October 21, 2004, 10:17:57 am
This is the UBR tog list, also known as T1T, with wich Lorenzo Fedeli won in Dulmen, modified for italian metagame (by him and Filippo Grigatti, 2 of italian best players):

http://www.theabyss.biz/2004/winners/2top8bologna10.htm

This version runs 7 solomoxen, 3 intuitions and 1 only E.E. because against an aggro deck your deck must increase his speed and became a sort of combo deck and win the damage race with the aggro deck.

You simply don't need BTB cause you win with every deck wich suffers from BTB, (except for bazaar-madness wich is not so easy to beat) and you put in your deck other dead cards vs aggro decks.

@Toad

we got here all unpowered decks you have spoken about but their results aren't so good to tell they're better than a sligh/zoo deck.

Gianluca "janus" verno made a lot of top8 with his fcg unspoilered but on the other side lots and lots of random players couldn't do better than a 0-2 drop with the same deck.

We do not have belcher here, maybe just because you can stop them with every card in your hand, maybe a null rod or a piropillar may help, and if the belcher got a 1° turn win all decks without fow will lose...

personal note: i don't want to criticize to much your decks but blood moon in a zoo deck, shit they cost 3 mana!! when will you be able to drop them? i saw a zoo deck around europe, maybe in germany, unspoilered of course, and that deck got 4 treetop, 4 mishra, mox chrome, mox diamond, troll ascetic, and other slooooooow cards... if this represents your tipical zoo i think it's not so hard to win...

dragon is the only unpowered deck that i think can be able to win tournaments, in fact Dario "lydonius" de Palma made so great results here that lots of guys built his deck, but on the other side he needs bazaar $$$

@toad: i would like to moderate myself but i see on other threads people like morefling telling that we italians are just able to made decks worst that they're... so i can try to be the more educated i can be but not every people here do the same

just my 2 cents

@Loa

vs tps i can assure you that an italian zoo as we know can't do so much, because the usual player is so frightened by hulk smash or mud to completly forgot that they aren't the only decks in the world
vs control he got the advantage of speed

of course magic is strictly related to maths but it's not closed to its rules, so we can have for 100 games god hands, because every time we shuffle the deck we restart and we got again a 4% to have a god hand just because shuffling the deck is completly randomic

@donkey

how you can say that the metagame is developed? i think that our metagame is better cause to an higher number of archetipes, in our meta you can find all decks that you see in your proxy meta (except TMS that no one plays!)  and also GOOD unpowered decks, that beats also our better players, the same players that made great results on other europeans tournaments
6  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / US and European Vintage, Will the gap ever close? on: September 10, 2004, 05:42:49 am
@Toad: maybe in your dream land you do not have sligh monored, you don't consider them maybe beacuse in your state good players plays only powered decks.... it's funny but try to face a good sligh player with a good sligh list and then you will cry of having put a single sphere of law in your side

and stop defining sligh or zoo bad decks simply because french people are not good at playing them...

just another question: if you unpowered players don't bring sligh or zoo wich deck they bring? random shit? wow so i understand why you understimate them so much, and maybe this is the reason why italian players are better than the other europeans or you forgot dulmen and barcellona?

My brother made a lot of top8 with stacks decks and believe me hurkyl recall is just a scrubbish choice, the player who create a deck it's not always the best to develop and play it Wink

@kyle

the metagame can be modified also by the number of proxies... you play in america, in a proxy metagame, right? so when you study your deck and your side do you think to a decent way to beat a monored sligh or an unpowered dragon or an aGRro zoo? we got also prices for unspoilered, or unpowered as you would like to call them, players so a 13 years old guy with a good deck and without any power can win also a p9.

I will write the deck breakdown we have in our area so maybe you will discover that we as many arechetipes as you and maybe more...

@ stax with hurkyl and balance

omg these cards are just shit in this deck... you use balance while your main scope is to have board advantage, so you lock down your opponent and then suicide with a balance... and why the hell you use hurkyl??? aren't you able to manage 1 or 2 mana artifacts??

@ LOA

yeah try to beat the italian zoo, the guys are so frightened by mud and artifacts in general that they will side 7/8 artifact hate in addition to what they have maindeck (usually 2/3 mutation, 2/3 rack and ruin, pulverize ecc....) but if you're so convinced that ws trini resolves every problem....  Rolling Eyes

@LOA

when an unspoilered player knows that in his metagame he will face lots of TPS and dragon he just set his deck to beat them, for example some guys here in italy play a sligh monored with 4 pillar, 3 null rod, 2 shaman maindeck and vs they're just nuts! Vs dragon a monored can side in only tormod's crypt, usually 3 or 4 or hope to kill the dragon with a bolt + pyrokinesis (sometimes happens Rolling Eyes) but the other decks such as zoo and fish can support more hate (naturalize, stifle ecc...)

about god-hands or so believed...:

do you really think that for a deck that run every card 4x the hands wich i described can be defined god-hands? i don't agree with you...
If a trinisphere comes into play on first turn (an you know how many ways we have to do this...) we have a lot of deadly card combination to kill pur opponent while he can't play a single spell:

crucible (3 copies) + strip effect (5 copies)
smokestack (4 copies)
metalworker (4 copies)

ecc...
won't you be able do draw them? i think maybe you do not understand and play 3sphere just using a third of his potential, try to use it in a serious mud or wmud and tell me how many times after a 3sphere you didn't drop a serious menace

Someone told that you can fow or waste a trinisphere and easily win the game... god! i wonder why i haven't ever thought to this solution, it's so easy to do but....

-to counter 3sphere you need a fow and a blue card and if you play 4c or hulk you haven't so much blue cards... and will you have a solution to the 2 menace?

3sphere resolves...:

-if you'havent got wastelands... i think you're not in such a good position
-if you waste his lands now he got 5 strip effects, 3 ws, 5/6 2mana-lands, and petrified fields, and don't forget that he could also play some moxes before trini...

EX:

ws mox trini

u waste

ws smokestack

crucible

bye bye

EX2:

ws trini

u waste

ws metalworker

reveal many artifacts

bye bye
10  Eternal Formats / Creative / More speed for my tog on: June 01, 2004, 07:27:52 am
I just wanna know why this post was moved... no anger but if mods can make some explanation when they do something i think is better for all...
11  Eternal Formats / Creative / Know the meta game, need the deck... on: May 31, 2004, 10:18:08 am
So we can say that you can find:

32-35 counter decks
6 ws.dec (8 with tnt)
6 aggro (8 with tnt)
1-3 combo dragon

So i see that you have to run for sure a deck that have good matchups VS control and some vs artifact (i don't think so few sligh and dragon can be such a problem to modify your choice).

I think that the first keeper or 4c control as you like to call can be a good choice, cause in a heavy control metagame i think you won't take care of brass and skeletal damages so much, i would do just some changes for the sideboard:

3 ReB
1 Fire ice
1 Coffin Purge
1 Cop Red
1 BeB
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Gush
1 Disenchant
2 Rack and Ruin
1 Swords To Plowshares
2 Dwarven Miner (this old guy can do his job in a 5 waste, 2 shaman deck in a so spoilered metagame full of keeper, landstill and hulk)
12  Eternal Formats / Creative / More speed for my tog on: May 31, 2004, 10:04:08 am
@godot: he got reb yes, how many 2/3? and the counter war is in his favour? i have something more to counter for him than 2/3 cards...

I run (maindeck!!!):

4 duress
4 intuition
3 deep analysis

while he run just 2/3, 2/3 and 1/, so maindeck I'm the strongest one, after side he gains 3 reb but i still have a lot more drawing cards that he can't stop all...

@clown
you speak of a 2 turn mana drain and a 3 turn merchant for intuition... i speak of an almost sure first turn intuition for 3 ak o 3 DA and if you're lucky with tolarian you resolve both the inution and the drawing card.

I'm not saying I want a tog faster, i wanna draw all my deck asap and while are you drawing so much believe me that a tog will be in your hand

I'm running academy and as you said unecessary artifacts... so why all tog i see on this forum can run 7 solomoxen + crypt and i can't? i'm vulnerable to wasteland but if i decide to change this slot i probabily put antoher destroyable land so where is the advantage? i think is better have the possibility of starting with 4/5 and even 6 mana on first turn to resolve your goodies than starting land go...

Totally agree with the second part of maxx words  Very Happy
13  Eternal Formats / Creative / More speed for my tog on: May 30, 2004, 08:40:37 am
Vs 4c bulk we have a more solid mana base (we have 2 basic island and just 3 color), 4 duress, 4 intuition and 3 deep analysys maindeck i do not think it would be so a bad matchup for us

Yes vs slavery and food chain we lose fire/ice, artifact hate ecc... but no one plays slaver in italy and there just 1 or 2 good fcg players

Gush isnt' maindeck cause i don't wanna lose 2 lands we have 4 ak, 3 deed, ancestral and so on to draw we don't need another drawing maindeck
14  Eternal Formats / Creative / More speed for my tog on: May 30, 2004, 07:15:04 am
Last days myt firend and my brother was testing a new version of hulk smash, faster than the other we usually see,  saw i was very strong and sometimes won damage race vs aggro or combo decks

Here's the first list:

-mana base-
4 polluted delta
4 underground sea
3 tropical island
2 island
1 tolarian academy
1 LOA
7 solomoxen
1 mana crypt

-the way i kill you-
2 aToG

-i wanna control the game-
4 force of will
4 mana drain
4 duress

-draw draw draw-
4 brainstorm
4 intuition
4 ak
3 deep analysis
1 ancestral recall

-broken-
3 cunning wish
1 demonic tutor
1 pernicious deed
1 time walk
1 yawgmoth will

Card choices:

-tolarian academy: we want to play this deck as much faster as we can, we need blu mana and we have 8 artifacts, so tolarian is just what we need to speed us up (academy mox mox sol ring, intuition and ak for 3 the same turn just to make an example)

-2 tog instead of 3: we draw very fast, we have lots of search engine so we can put without problems a tog on board, the only problem is that we lose the possibility of intuition for 3 tog, but testing we saw that we have no so much problem finding it

-3 duress no twist: twist is heavy, we want speed and use mana just to draw, play atog and wish, and also 4 duress are the best way to make an intuition resolve

-4 intuition: the objective of the deck is resolve an intuition as fast as possibile, playing 4 of them we are almost sure that we will able to able it on first or second turn, we play also 3 deep analyss totake vs control so 4 are the best choice for this deck

i think maindeck needs no more explations, sideboard is mad for our metagame:

Sideboard:
2 coffin purge (rector, dragon, madness, tnt)
1 ground seal (dragon, welder decks)
1 berserk
1 gush
1 fact or fiction
1 naturalize (dragon, ws.dec)
1 oxidize (ws.dec, null rod ecc...)
1 rushing river (useful for everything)
1 hurkyl recall (ws.dec, affinity)
1 pernicious deed (artifact and aggro decks)
1 vampiric tutor
1 smother
2 blue elemntal blast (blood moon, random red aggro, welder)

16  Eternal Formats / Creative / Null Rod Vs. Damping Matrix on: April 08, 2004, 05:18:58 am
They're similar but their use are very different, i think rod is an aggro card, to stop both mana and activated abilities and can be used in decks based on denial or simply is wonderful in aggro decks to gain some time advantage, personally i woul play matrix just in control decks such as keeper or eba, keeper for example can't afford null rod, it needs mana and can't shut down its moxes

18  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / About TriniNT on: March 30, 2004, 10:34:40 am
I post here my personal report of my last tournament:

I went to the tournament with my usual deck TNT, this time I tried a version wich has trinisphere maindeck, I think is a very good card to give my deck time to win, is thousand times better that pillar, moon and chalices.
I did a lot of brainstorming about wich version I would have played, the right number of creatures, mana artefacts, sideboard ecc…, finally I decided for this army, that I called TriNiT (or maybe TriniNT…):

4 Wooded Foothills
4 Forest
3 Taiga
1 Mountain
4 Mishra's Workshop
4 Wasteland
1 Strip Mine
7 Solomoxen
1 Mana Crypt

4 Juggernaut
3 Su-Chi
3 Solemn Simulacrum
2 Triskelion
1 Karn, Silver Golem
1 Platinum Angel
1 Sundering Titan

4 Goblin Welder
1 Squee, Goblin Nabob
1 Anger

1 Uktabi Orangutan

4 Survival of the Fittest
4 Trinisphere
2 Sylvan library

SIDE:
3 Red Elemental Blast
3 Blood Moon
2 Null Rod
2 Ground Seal
2 Naturalize
2 Tormod's Crypt
1 Rack and Ruin

First I explain my choices so people can understand what I’ve in my mind…:

-about my mana base I decided to play mana crypt because it is good do drop 3sphere and if a 3 sphere is in play to pay the additional cost, I played 29 and for me is a strange thing cause I always thought that 28 is the right number but I was also playing 61 cards so I didn’t mind so much; but after the tournament I was thinking about cutting a forest cause sometimes I was in mana flood;
-another important choice I made was to play not 4 su chi but 3 and 3 simulacrum, because in my opinion the more simulacrum you play the best way your deck will run but they’re not an aggro card so I decided finally for 3 also because I thought this version the day before the tournament and I wasn’t able to try so I focused on making my deck easier to play sacrificing an aggro creature for an utility creature;
 -2 triskelion, I’ve seen lots and lots of peopole playing duplicant instead of one of them, but lots of matches won by switching one for another or drawing it without survival vs an army of small creatures convinced me to play 2 and no duplicant;
-the only other strange creature in maindeck is uktabi orangutan, I choose it cause I was expecting some artefact decks so I preferred it to gorilla shaman cause it can eat also big artifacts and with 3sphere they both cost 3 mana

-I think my side doesn’t need so much explication, I’ve reb vs control or combo, moon vs combo or 4/5 color control, null rod vs combo or slavery, ground seal for dragon, naturalize vs ws decks, combo, decks with pernicious maybe, mirror ec… tormod’s vs madness, dragon and hulk, rack vs ws decks
The price of the tournament was a time walk, then from 2° to 8° place some things going from balance , dual unlimited to chalice of the void.

1° match UR sceptre
I started and played ws, mox,  juggernaut, resolved, he played island go, I attack and drop land, lotus sotf, he tried ancestral but he didn’t see any counter so I discarded a beast for squee, squee for juggi, played juggi with ws and floating mana, and win in a couple of turns, I was able to see just blu cards and 2 island so I didn’t know if he was playing another colors, I tried to put in only reb, he started island go, I tried survival but he forced, than drained my juggernaut and my su-chi, he played scepter on fire/ice, gorilla shaman and he still have 3 free mana and lot of cards in hand so we went to third match.
I started very slow, with land go, he played land go, I tried ws juggernaut he played ancestral force him and in his turn played scepter on counterspell, in my turn I drop trinisphere he didn’t find more than 3 lands so with 3sphere in play I was able to play everything and I won with survival taking titan, welder ecc…

2° match madness URG
I started ws mox 3sphere it resolved, he played bazaar and I go playing wasteland and juggernaut, he played land, I attack and play su-chi in a couple of turns I won the game.
Second match he started with bazaar, I mulligan to 5 and I was able to drop only a welder, he discarded squee, wonder and deep analysys, played tropical mox mox mongrel, in my turn I tried a juggernaut he played circular logic, then bazaar discarded roar of the wurm, anger, in his turn e played roar attacked and we went to third match.
Third match I played ws mox tormod 3sphere, it resolved, than juggernaut and wasteland, than su-chi and wasteland and I won easily

3° match Dragon
I started with 1° turn survival, he was a strong player he started like this: land, mox, lotus, ancestral, walk, entomb, vampiric, play another turn, necromancy, wish for stroke…
Second match I played land mox mox and didn’t play moon cause I wanted to protect it with reb, he started with fetch, in my turn I played moon, he forced and I played reb, so it resolved but he took swamp with fetch, next turn I didn’t draw anything, he played demonic for lotus and played verdant from his hand, after a couple of turns I drew platinum played it but he force and played necromancy on it.

4° match Waste/Hulk 3 color
He started with land mox lotus I played juggernaut he played ak and drain, in his turn another ak, walk, mox mox, pernicious, I tried a beast he drained it played another ak, ancestral…sooo strong!
Second match I had one of the best hand ever, I started land mox mox lotus tormod survival reb for his force discard simulacrum for squee and squee for welder and played it, then made some land/card advantage with simulacrum and finally destroyed it with titan.
Third match he started land go I drop sylvan, he played land, second turn waste mox moon that resolved, then survival, thousand beasts and win.

5° match ZOO
I thinked that this is an easy match but I didn’t see a single 3sphere for 3 matches…
I started with juggernaut, second turn survival, triskelion and titan, he was able just to stop one or two attackand bolt a welder and died.
Second turn another mulligan to 5 I tried some beast but without survival and with 5 cards in hand I was just able to see him playing land kird, bolt on my juggi rancor attack, skullclamp, shaman and lavamancer ec… I died soon.
Third match I started with first turn survival with lotus but without ws or moxes to weld, so for a couple of turn I had to sacrifice 2 welder and put squee in play to block his army, fortunately I drew mana crypt so I was able (with 3 lands) to play simulacrum, welder to weld triskelion in play kill 2 lavamancer and a 1/1 kird ape then I started to draw with SS, played titan and closed the match.

6° match $t4ck$
First match I started aggro, he didn’t see tangle wire to stop me so I played other beasts and won on 4° turn.
Second match was one of the longest match of the day, he started with welder I played juggernaut, he played thirst for knowledge, walk, then pentavus and trinisphere, in my turn in played rod to stop his pentavus, I didn’t see anything like a survival or a triskelion to shut his welder I’ve my own welder in play so nobody wanted to switch for first, after some turns he drew tinker for triskelion killed my welder then played smokestack and we went to third match, the time was going to finish, he had got few points and with 1-1 not enough to enter top8 so he gives me the match.

7° match affinity
Id to enter top8

TOP8:
1) Danilo Benvenuti (Keeper)
2) Pietro Cavalletti (Rector Tendril)
3) Nicola Grimal (Affinity)
4) Filippo Grigatti (Hulk Smash)
5) Giuseppe De Luca (Dragon)
6) Stefano Vera (Madness URG)
7) Claudio Ferloni (TnT)
8) Alfredo Casiraghi (Dragon)

1° match Rector Tendril
He starter with land go, I’ve got an horrible hand but drew 3sphere, and it resolved, I played than 3 wasteland than attack with juggernaut and won.
Second match he started with tolarian mox mox mox rector, I played another 3sphere, than waste on tolarian, I played land for some turn, then play blood moon but he played rebuild than in his turn blue blast and win with bargain.
Third match I had to mulligan to 4 cards and I still didn’t see anything else than a reb I kept but he obv closed with rector therapy and bargain, and I wasn’t able to play a single 3sphere, or  rod or moon…

Actually I'm playing TNT, maybe it's not the best deck, maybe is not a tier1 but it's the one that gives me more fun.
So I' was trying to build a good decklist , i started from the mana base, but after thinking a lot about it i realized that it's perfect like this, actually I'm playing:

4 workshop
4 fetchland
4 forest
3 taiga
1 mountain
5 waste+ strip
7 solomoxen
(28)

I think 28 is the right number for this deck; some people i saw were running crypt, or vault or grim monolith, but i never lack of artifacts to improve my welder also cause i used to play with chalices nad i also saw many people running just 3 forest but often i don't see green mana for my survival so i prefer to have 1 more forest.
I think the 5 waste+strip are just necessary for this deck.

About creatures i started with the most important, the base of the deck:

4 welder
1 squee
1 anger

4 juggi
4 su-chi
2 triskelion
1 karn
1 platinum

These guys are a must have for this deck, they're just fundamental! Around them i built my army, i think i will play about 21/23 creatures, so now i have 18, for first i added 2 solemn simulacrum, that i think are so beautiful in this deck with 4/5 basic lands. then i have 2/3 creatures still to fill in the deck, I thought to what people plays and i do not play:

phyrexian colossus
duplicant
uktabi orangutan
gorilla shaman
elvish replica
quirion ranger
sundering titan
darksteel colossus (some people plays it against dragon)

I simply like to have a BIG ONE in my deck that can do a lot of damages just attacking one time, cause lots of time i got survival but was able to do just 4/5 damages cause i didn't play big creatures.
I discarded colossus cause is a passive creature, i probabily would never be able to play it, it's just good against laquatus, duplicant cause it depends on what my opponent owns and finally choose titan cause it can also do a little armageddon used well and doesnt' need quirion to untap (like colossus...) and for the other slot i choose uktabi orangutan over gorilla shaman for the moment, maybe in a second time i will replace it with the mox monkey.

Now i just need to finish my deck with the utilities, the base of the deck are the 4 sotf, then about the other cards i tried about all cards that i see were played like pillars, moons, chalices, trinisphere, sphere of resistance, tangle wire... after some playing i decided for trinisphere, maybe you will ask me why, so i explain my choice:

the main problem of tnt are combo decks, that's why most players play wth moon+pillars, so why don't play with trinisphere? i compared 3sphere with pillar + moon:

-3sphere can be casted also with colorless mana like ws
-3sphere doesn't damage my opponent, like pillar but pillar also can damage me and if my opponent s playing bolts or another aggro deck can kill me easier
-moons are the best vs multicolor decks, but they're simply dead cards against zoo, sligh, gobli, monoblack, 2 color random control...
-ws 3sphere land juggernaut is most of the time game, cause my opponent needs three lands to stop me, i play 5 waste+strip and have 5/3 and 4/4 creatures

I will discuss mi sideboard another time, if you want by now to comment my list fell free
bye

i think sword of fire and ice costs a lot, i would prefer to play a mask of memory instead of it, maybe don't go trough tog but costs just 2 and 1 to equip

(15)

I live in italy and the exchange is really a good thing for us, for example in italy you can find moxes between 200 and 250 euros more or less, on ebay i can find the same moxes at the same price but they're dollars, so instead of paying 250€ for a mox i pay 250$ that are about 200€
25  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / The cards that every T1 player should have on: March 09, 2004, 11:03:46 am
I think a must have list is personal. It depends of the player style, for example i like aggro decks or combo decks, and i would never play control so why i've to keep drain, phidian and so on?

Actually i'm using gold dragonshield and i think they are good to shuffle and to protect cards.

Nice to see so much italian action!

Thank you  Very Happy

Tell me, what's the average age of the 134 tournament players in your opinion?

There were a lot of players but i think a medium age can be estimated beetween 20 and 25 years but there were also older or younger people

Were there many full powered deck?

Soon in our league's official site all statistics will be posted, usually we have the average of 65% spoilered decks and 35% non spoilered (we have special prizes for no p9 decks so about all players play full spoiler or don't )

Being a retired player (sort of) this report really helps me a lot by giving me a glimpse of the metagame I'll face, should I partecipate again in a T1 tournament. All those T1 cards sitting on my shelves...
Just to give an idea, in mt last tournament I lost to a Stasis deck while playing a Land's Edge BR deck....
cheers,
Wizbane

soon when the site would be update i will post here with all the statistics of the tournament
