1  Eternal Formats / Null Rod Based Aggro / Re: The Mountains Win Again! on: April 04, 2009, 12:45:37 pm
OK so I have to admit I have been out of the Vintage scene for a while.  A long while.  But it seems to me that these decks would be more effective against the meta (which seems to be blue or dredge with a splash of other stuff) with more REBS, like 8 of them.  Now before you go screaming about dead cards, hear me out.  I think you can fit painters servant in this deck.  If you have a servant and 8 REBS it does become a lot like a grindstone deck, but this gives you an advantage!  IF you get skunked game one and they see a painter early, they WILL sideboard wrong.  8 permanent removal/counter spells is very good against any deck, period.  This thread was started saying that vintage had become a combination of a bunch of blue broken cards and some random win condition.  Although some of those cards are restricted now, with the addition of Tezz that is still pretty acurate.  Also a REB is better than a StP or Path to Exile because it isn't limited to creatures.  You would also have the option of running a singleton Grindstone as an alternate win condition.  I know I have been out of the scene for a while but this seems like a good way to overcome the Island heavy meta.

Sounds like you hosted another sweet tourney Carl!!  I was sad to read this thread and find that you would not be hosting any tournaments all summer though.  I have been on lockdown with a full school schedule, a full time job and a two year old son and will finally have some weekends free this summer for some good ol' T1 beats.  I know Ed has been having a tourney here and there in Boulder but all in all it seems we need more tourney's!  Is there a Colorado MTG T1 email list or group online somewhere that notifies people of upcoming events?  It would be savage if one of the more technologicaly literate MTG'rs could throw something like that together so that we would all know about all the events!!
On a side note, shouldn't any card over $200 be counted as power if you are offering a non powered prize?  I mean seriously are you trying to encourage Lou to play his darn dredge deck?  "Hey Lou, why don't you play dredge, win yourself a Recall and $40!"  I mean Lou is one UGLY MOFO but he can play dredge quite well, lets not encourage him.

@ Ed and Pierce: I am all about making the vintage tourneys at Time WEarp when work doesn't conflict!!
@ Lou: I don't really have anything to say to you but for a dick you are a pretty cool cat.
@ AJ: Right on for trying to get another Vintage tournament scene set up.
@ Jewlightning: You have a Harrison Ford fetish and you only take pictures of boy's wrestling, do you reside in a closet? will you ever come out?
@ Carl" YEAH come play at other venues, that way we can see the focused, "I am not making a god damn ruling right now" carl!
5  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: painters control on: June 06, 2008, 02:57:21 pm
I definetley agree that the Painter's players are going to have to reconsider the 8 REB's in the main. The restriction may or may not phase mono blue out of the competitive meta if only temporarily.  However with the new restrictions I do think the BEB is a great way to keep FOW powerful and fight against the likely appearance of more Goblin decks, but is it strong enough for Main deck?  I am still out on this verdict, any ideas?
6  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Article] Latest Developments by Devin Low on: June 06, 2008, 02:18:11 pm
I too was dissapointed with wizard's explanation for the restrictions list posted on the 1st.  To truly make wizards know what the vintage community feels we should write emails like polynomial's to the wizard's staff, however, even if this is the biggest mistake wizards has ever made regarding restrictions and banning, it will not be changed until September when the new R&B lists are posted.  The fact that Flash was used to create a savage Turn one (NOT ZERO) kill with only two cards is indictive of the ingenuity of the vintage community.  So I say that after we all take thirty minutes and write a well thought out, expletiveless, constructive critique of the new restrictions we should begin to use our ingenuity to formulate decks that can combat for first place in August.  Now I know there are teams out there that have already begun this process and will likely keep their ideas under wraps, the rest of us who may not attend Nat's should be working together to create Ichorid wrecking machines that can compete in our favorite format.  I for one am trying to determine how Faeries can be used in Vintage, I think Spellstutter Sprite is an excellent counterspell that destroys Moxen, Lotus, and at least three of the restricted draw engines.  I admit that it is difficult to fathom an aggroish conjtrol deck based on a type 2 monster working in Vintage, but I am going to try!  What are you going to do to try to increase the number of competitive decks post June 1st's bomb?

This is definetley a sad day for the COlorado Vintage scene.  Carl I appreciate the few tournaments I was able to attned and am sorry that I had to miss the last one due to my new job.  I understand your reasoning and am sorry that this sunday was so terrible for you.  Best of luck to you Carl, if you host events in the future, barring work restrictions, I would love to attend.  Take Care.

WOW! Ok first off let me say that I did not read every post in this thread, I stopped somewhere around a moderator asking for content in the posts, page 4 of 9 at the time.  I am pretty new to the vintage scene, and am quite shocked.  When I think of card restrictions I just don't think of Brainstorm and Ponder.  My biggest concern is that Dredge is going to dominate the field, a smart dredge player just has to find a way to mainboard their Emerald Charms for the maindeck LEylines that will need to be in the "New innovative" decks that are surely on the horizon.  Although I am shocked, and pissed, I think we all need to wait until friday and listen to Wizard's reasoning before we abandon our favorite format.  I admit, it hurts, but in the long run I think the innovation that arises from this attrocity will provide us with some new deck ideas that the format has been hungry for. Lets be patient and see what comes with the post on friday as well as what, if any, new decks can over come the 'Shop and Dredge heavy metagame that is sure to come.

Well I was partially correct, I did overlook the obvious pithing needle wreckage.  I still feel that if an opponent of this deck has leyline and needle they will put in both for games 2 and 3.  Syntheticangel has recomended a Tarmogoyf SB to completely alter the kill in FLash for games 2 and 3 and I think that is a great idea, are there any other suggestions for altering the kill on this deck in the SB?

At the risk of ruining the trip down memory lane I have to interject since I now know that you are on the drain Guzzo.  Props on making top eight and props for lending me cards that my dumb arse forgot to give you before I left ( I will have them for you friday).  Oh and I plan on at least TRYING to beat down your T8 deck at some point at FNM.
BTW this is Nicholas
12  Eternal Formats / Creative / The ponderings of a noob sauce RE: Flash on: March 12, 2008, 05:02:59 pm
In my first vintage tournament I ran a version of Flash, more specifically the Sliver version.  I was told by my mentor that this build was better.

2x Flooded Strand
3x Polluted Delta

4x Reverent Silence
Seal of Primordium
4x Virulent Sliver
Heart Sliver
4x Leyline of the Void

Now obviously I see why improving the kill to instant speed is a good improvement, however, my confusion doesn't lie in the MD changes it lies in the SB.  From what I have seen most opponents will SB in Leyline of the Void when they are playing flash.  If I were to SB in the slivers and take out the instant fanatic combo I have only slightly changed my win condition and will still be fearing the Leyline.  Now I understand that Reverent SIlence is an answer to Leyline as is Echoing truth ( which I would fit in the SB) what I don't understand is why the SB contains so many cards that are reliant on the same combo as the MB couldn't these slots be used to either A) counter common T8 vintage decks or B) have an alternate somewhat unexpected win condition that could dance around the typical Leyline answer?
If I didn't say it already, I am VERY new to vintage, so maybe I am overlooking or overthinking the obvious but if someone would please clarify I would appreciate it.
13  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: Meandeck Open of Pittsburgh Day 1 Results!! March 8th on: March 12, 2008, 12:49:49 am
Ok I am new to vintage but Flash (one version or another) is what I am learning vintage on.  I see how this MB is superior due to the instant speed of the kill, however, I do not understand the SB.  Leyline ( an obvious SB choice of the opponent) seems to me to shatter your win condition whether you have fanatic/rev/double combo through the hulk or virulent/heart sliver through the hulk.  I see the 4 reverent's to combat this but I don't understand SBing one win condition for another that is contingent on the same combo.  Can someone clear this up for me.  otherwise I would be inclined to come up with a better/different type of win condition in the sideboard (if this can be done with 15 cards).
Ok sorry apparently my question was unclear, what I am asking in this post is:  An opponent of flash will almost always SB in Leyline.  With the posted sideboard including the *other* flash kill of slivers, how is the fanatic to sliver kill going to combat the fact that my opponent will be trying their darnedest to get leyline in play.

Yeah that was me. The tournament we are discussing was the proxy 15 at black and gold.  And yes my opponent was pierce.  In hindsight I think I learned a number of lessons from this mistake.  Number one know the rules.  Number two KNOW THE RULES.  Number three mistakes happen and they are not bad events unless you do not learn from them.  Number four you are responsible for knowing how each card in your deck operates.  I appreciate all the feedback from people at the event and I look forward to tweaking this deck per some new flash types I have seen on the drain.  I will be at the next event so long as babysitting and rides can be arranged and I assure you when I brainstorm two cards will FLY from my hand to the top of my library.

Good Morning America, How are you?
Umm I am not your long lost son but I am a relatively new magic player.  I started just after Lorwyn hit and have been playing mostly type ii until this past weekend.  Vintage is WAY better.  I am a student and a father, my son is one year old and walking.  I am writing this the day after the red rings of doom hit my 360 so I am a gamer but won't be gaming for awhile.  I am going to school to be a teacher.  Umm I sound pretty boring but me is me and now you know me.
Oh you can call me nicholas since I am about to sign this that way anyway.

17  Eternal Formats / Creative / My first vintage experience, (If you are new to vintage please read) on: March 10, 2008, 04:32:54 pm
Ok, I am VERY new to vintage, friday the 7th I played my first vintage test matches with a download version of flash.  Some friends at FNM convinced me to attend a Proxy 15 Mox tournament on Sunday the 9th.  I was quite nervous because I knew that flash was a good deck and had top eight potential, my nervousness was associated with the fact that I felt a bad play would cost me a game or match, unfortuneately I was right.  I am posting this so people who are new to any format or cards remember how costly a simple avoidable mistake can be.
In game one I have the turn one win (flash protean hulk, a mox and a land) I elect to merchant scroll for pact of negation because I do not know what my opponent is playing, then I pass.  Turn two I win.
For game two I mulligan, twice.  My opponenet first turn Duress, second turn thoughtseize, third turn thoughtseize. I obviously do not win the top deck challenge.
Game three starts out horribly for me, my opponent mulls to 6 after I mull to 6 and declare keep.  He shouts in excitement and drops Leyline from his opening hand.  Once again I am without counters and getting thoughtseized/duressed into oblivion, then my opponent timetwists...I am thinking to myself "Did he really just give a deck with this much turn one win potential seven more cards?"  My new seven card hand includes a M scroll, a flash, a pact of negation, a protean hulk, a mox, a winged sliver ( i want to fly over bob with my SB) and a virulent sliver.  I am almost to my win condition and need to topdeck.  I don't topdeck the win (reverent silence with my tropical island already in play) but I do topdeck a chance at answers, ancestral recall.  I cast ancestral recall and draw into brainstorm and nothing else, I cast brainstorm and stare straight into a reverent silence, I should have this match hands down.  The problem is I got so excited to win my first vintage match that I cast reverent silence before putting two cards back onto my library for brainstorm.  My opponent did not notice this either but after a slight counter war over reverent silence I realize my mistake and admit this to my opponent, he calls a judge.  From what I understand the judges ruling could have gone either way but it was ruled an irrepairable game state resulting in a game loss.  Had I just slowed down and paid attention to card text I would have started my first vintage tournament at 1-0.  There is an important lesson to be learned here, when you first start playing vintage slow down and pay attention, who cares if your opponent plays his four spells and one land in less than a second on turn one, you have the right to think everything through and doing so can stop you from making a mistake like I did.
