Eternal Formats / Creative / [Card Discussion] Scent of Ivy
|
on: April 03, 2004, 09:52:57 pm
|
Im talking 10 land stompy as noted several times in the opening post. I don't run it in my stompy at all but it is a reasonable card. If you're a player who cant find certain cards scent of ivy could be used in its place untill the cards you're looking for are in your possesion. Giant Growth and Bounty are more faster as you had noted and I had completely forgotten about the Tax Scroll/Tax Zuran Orb hand growereging thinger.

Eternal Formats / Creative / [Card Discussion] Scent of Ivy
|

Scent of Ivy /G Instant As an additional cost of playing Scent of Ivy, Reveal X green cards in your hand, target creature gets +X/+X untill end of turn where X is the number of the cards revealed this way.
This card is often overlooked since it seems to have poor synergy with 10 land stompy decks since they play there hands quickly.
A few upsides to this card is that in the early game, most if not all cards in your hand will be green giving your creature a large pump for early damage. In the control matchup your hand seems to accumulate from lack of playing as many spells, this lets you eventually resolve scent to give a creature a large pump if it resolves.
Scent of ivy is usually weak after playing all of your cards in hand which isn't rare as almost everything costs 1 or 2 mana. Although the point stated above may be true, wouldn't that statement apply to running emyrial armor or plate in a white weenie although most people do play 2-3 plates or armors in there white weenie decks knowing that there deck has a cc set at 1-2.
I have been testing the card in my 10 land and it works how expected. I see it as a green empyrial armor for 10 land stompy. It does work very well but its better off being used as a room filler since there are better cards to use in 10 land.
Tell me what you think. Discuss...

A deck design ive been testing for a while. The deck should be pretty straight forward but just incase. Simply through week creatures at clamp to draw cards. Tutor or draw Will. Through the creatures back into play and clamp em again. Tendrils after a few Duress or Therapy for the win. This deck is still in testing. Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
4x Crookshank Kobolds 4x Crimson Kobolds 4x Kobolds of Kher Kep 4x Myr Moonvessel 3x Gorilla Shaman

What happens when the opponent drops a first turn Null Rod, chalice or Trinisphere? Seems like a fun deck, but easily disrupted. Thats what a sideboard is for buddy.

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / [Deck] Survival Dragon

Although blue outspeeds this deck, this is more fun to play. And sometimes Survival works better than compulsion as compulsion you need 1U to dump a card and its not always a WGD and Friends. Witrh survival you get rid of one for an other for an other. Compulsion does however grab counterspells and such, leaving (IMO) compulsion and survival equal in this sort of build.

Use Survival of The fittest to get your WGD and friends into graveyard. Animate and win! I dont find colourless mana usefull in this deck. There are 16 creatures you can survival with(Including the EGS in the mana source) so the combo goes off pretty quickly.
4 Worldgorger Dragon 3 Squee, Goblin Nabob
1 Ambassador Laquatus 1 Sliver Queen
3 Verdant Force
4 Xantid Swarm 4 Duress
4 Survival of the fitest 4 Bazaar of Baghdad
1 Demonic Tutor 1 Vampiric Tutor
3 Animate Dead 2 Dance of the Dead 3 Necromancy
1 Black Lotus 1 Mox Jet 1 Mox Emerald 4 Elvish Spirit Guide 4 Bayou 1 Wooded Foothills 1 Bloodstained Mire 1 Llanowar Wastes 5 Forest 2 Swamp

ww/r.dec
4 Savannah Lions 4 White Knight/Silver Knight 4 Soltari Monk/Soltari Priest
3 Orim's Chant 3 Aura of Silence 2 Gorilla Shaman
4 Lightning Bolt 4 Incinerate
3 Land Tax 2 Zuran Orb
2 Swords to Plowshares
1 Wheel of Fortune? 1 Balance 1 Fork 1 Black Vise
1 Black Lotus 1 Mox Pearl 4 Plateau 2 Flooded Strand 1 Battlefield Forge 8 Plains 4 Mountain
Im a bit iffy on running Wheel since it gives my opponant card advantage. Red is just a splash but it seems I run a bit more than a splash of red, should I play Mox Ruby in this build?
As for the Knights and Soltaris, if im expecting alot of black I will run the White Knights and Soltari Monks and if im expecting alot of red I use Silver Knights and Soltari Priests. If im not sure I go with the pro-reds as there isnt that large of a selection in black that targets my creatures.
The landtax orb combo thins my deck. Balance also does great with Zuran Orb.
The remaining componants of the deck should be self explanitory. Please comment on improvement.

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / [Deck] Wizards

Patron wizard was much too slow/awkward to work in t2 or block. It only gets worse in t1 (even with more good wizards to choose from). Your first deck list was better I think im going to take out the patron wizard, not for the fact of being slow or awkward, but my wizards are always tapped from attacking making it difficult to tap untapped wizards to juice the Patron. Back to the original list up top. Any other suggestions?

Patron wizard. Ive never seen that card being played but it would be interesting to try out since its a wizard rush deck, the tapping wizards to patron should work qiute well. What would you take out however?

This looks a bit like EBA, but it doesn't have any fat beats like that deck does (i.e. Phyrexian Negator, Exalted Angel). I don't thing there are any Wizards to match their raw power though, but I do think you need something bigger than 2 power to put your opponent on a faster clock. Are you sticking with Wizards for the Voidmage-counter ability, or is this a casual/tribal style deck?
Also, Mystical Tutor might be better over the Vampiric, since you run so few non-sorcery/instant spells. No loss of life, and it can pitch to Force of Will if need be. Rather than fat beats, I went with a weenie'ish sort of kill. Vampiric Tutor>Mystical Tutor because at times grabbing creatures is more important(even if the loss of life does apply). I know the deck would function better with more fatties but I just feel like keeping at a small wizard sort of deck.

what's the point of running an all wizard deck if there is no reason to? You should think about putting some sort of tribal cards in it. Read Voidmage Prodigy more carefully buddy.

I had tested a W/B/U version and a R/B/U version. The R/B/U version consisted with Fire/Ice's and Grim Lavamancers. In the W/B/U I had used Meddling Mage's and Swords. I found the Splash of white worked better than Red in a control metagame. The only REAL mox in this deck is saphire as the other mox's werent added since they are only colour splashes. Im thinking of putting Decree of Justice in this deck since mana isnt hard to build up with mix's of Mana Drains, Mox's, Black Lotus. Please comment.

This is my tendrils deck. Im sort of poor and cant afford duals so splashing an aditional colour wouldnt work. I do find that Sol ring helps more than Chrome Mox in this deck and I don't really like Chrome Mox myself. The problem that I find with this deck is disruption as there is very little as I souly rely on Duress. I tired Hymn to Tourach but I find it has bad synergy with storming. Sideboard help and other suggestions would be appriciated.
kill: 2x Tendrils of Agony 1x Yawgmoth's Will
combo peices: 4x Darkwater Egg 4x Mossfire Egg 4x Shadowblood Egg 4x Skycloud Egg 4x Sungrass Egg 4x Chromatic Sphere 4x Helm of Awakening
Tutor 1x Vampiric Tutor 1x Demonic Tutor 2x Spoils of the Vault 1x Demonic Consultation
Disruption 4x Duress
Mana 4x Dark Ritual 4x Cabal Ritual 1x Lotus Petal 1x Sol Ring 10x Swamp
