Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Sneak Attack with Show and Tell

Hehehe..
Show and tell turn two looks strong. I'm not so sure about sneak attack though. I would try lowering the numbers on your creatures, sneak attacks and big-Jace and replace them with draw/deck manipulation, to avoid dead draws. Running black for confidants and tutors may be the most obvious choice, but splashing red for sneak attack is risky in the meta you're facing. Also: People will probably pack hate for permanent-based combos. Though being an enchantment rather than an artifact helps, sneak attack still has a big, bright bulls-eye painted on it.
Though sneak attack is hilarious, I'm pretty sure straight UB with tinker or oath would be better.
And wheel of fortune will be better for half your opponents than it'll be for you. I wouldn't run it main, at least.
I wish I could face you in The Cave this year. Unfortunately I'll be in another country at the time.
Hi Bearman I’m not playing in the cave this year. Too busy with work, home and cars. But I will test some against team Jæren with this deck after the tournament 1. Without Sneak Attack it’s not a sneak attack deck… 2. Yes. I could need more draw/deck manipulation… Big Jace helps on this. 3. Confidant? Did you notice the 4 Emrakul, 4 Primus along with 4 5cc and 6 4cc? 4. No, I will not play Oath instead of this. Yes I know it’s stronger. Just for fun, what would you have played this year if you were in the cave? ?If you're playing Sneak Attack, then why no Emrakul? That's X permanents gone, plus it gets shuffled back in to do it again.
Did you read the OP?

Here is the decklist I am starting with:
Win (18) 4 Sneak Attack 4 Show and Tell 4 Emrakul, the Aeons Torn 4 Woodfall Primus
1 Tinker 1 Sphinx of the Steel Wind 2 Jace, the Mind Sculptor
Draw (8) 1 Brainstorm 1 Ponder 1 Time Walk 1 Wheel of Fortune 1 Sensei's Divining Top 3 Preordain
Counterspells (10) 4 Daze Mental Misstep 4 Force of Will 2 Spell Pierce
Mana (24) 1 Lotus Petal 1 Mox Sapphire 1 Mox Ruby 1 Sol Ring 1 Mana Crypt
4 Scalding Tarn 4 Volcanic Island 2 Mountain 5 Island 4 Ancient Tomb
1) With only 6 artifacts should I drop Tinker (and Sphinx?) for more draw/search?
2) Preordain? There must be something better here (I hate that Brainstorm is restricted). I don't have Ancestral...
3) Could Jace TMS fit into this deck
4) Daze or Mental Misstep?
Ps. this is my attempt to build a fun deck for a unpowered (semi-powered) metagame. No tier 1 decks in my field.

I played this in DDAY IV in Firenze (about 200 players) this weekend 1 Flooded Strand 3 Island 4 Mishra's Factory 4 Scalding Tarn 1 Strip Mine 4 Volcanic Island 4 Wasteland 3 Cursecatcher 3 Gorilla Shaman 3 Grim Lavamancer 4 Ninja of the Deep Hours 1 Simian Spirit Guide 3 Spellstutter Sprite 1 Ancestral Recall 3 Annul 2 Daze 4 Force of Will 1 Mox Ruby 1 Mox Sapphire 3 Null Rod 2 Spell Snare 3 Standstill 1 Fire | Ice 1 Time Walk ----- 4 Energy Flux 1 Null Rod 4 Red Elemental Blast 4 Relic of Progenitus 2 Umezawa's Jitte R1 against MUD: lost game 1, sided in 4 Energy Flux, 1 Null Rod and 3 Relic of Progenitus for 3 Curse, 3 Spellstutter and 2 Snare. Won game 2 and 3. Energy Flux is tha bomb! R2 against Dredge: he started with gemstone mine and that green spell that sacrefices a land for a new land. I Forced it. I won both games with Relic being mvp. Sided out 3 Null Rod and 1 Annul. R3 against Mono Brown: again I lost game 1, sided in 4 Energy Flux, 1 Null Rod, 4 Relic of Progenitus for 3 Curse, 2 Daze, 3 Lavamancer and 1 Spellstutter. I won game 2 and 3 pretty easy thanks to Null Rod and Energy Flux. R4 against Selkie Strike: His creatures where bigger and faster than mine. I lost both games. Sided in 2 Jitte, 4 REB and 3 Relic, dunno what I sided out. R5 against Stax: Lost game 1 (as always against artifactdecks). In game two he has Ancient Tomb and Mishra's Factory in play. I have a Cursecatcher, Volcanic Island and a Wasteland. Somehow I don't play Standstill because Mishra is bigger than Cursecatcher. Oh my, I have Wasteland for gods sake. Probably a mistake that costed me the game. I made some small mistakes after this one. I am getting pretty tired after little sleep for 2 days and much waiting between rounds. Still 3-2 and possible to get some more points. R6 against red/green aggro, more aggro and less control than Christmas Beatings: I won game 1 and lost game 2 and 3. Fire | Ice (Fire) was great, Jitte was great, Relic was great. But still. Magus stopped my Mishras and Goyf was too big to handle. R7 against Selkie Strike: I won both games easy. I have a feeling that he drew terrible. Kinda lucky since it is not a good matchup for me. I sided in 2 Jitte, 4 REB and 4 Relic for 3 Null Rod, 3 Annul, 2 Daze and 2 Shaman btw. So I was 4-3 and it was time to get some food so I dropped for the last round. I really enjoyed playing this deck. I feel it is great in a stax/mud/monobrown heavy metagame. Not so good against other fish. Fire (as in fire| ice) was totally worth the slot. Mishra's was better than Muta (I never wanted muta in play for spellstutter, but Mishra helped me against Lodestone twice). Energy Flux was MVP overall.

Considering we (at least the list I'm playing) have 3 Mox Monkey and 3 Annul maindeck I think 4 Energy Flux is enough artifact hate in the sideboard. The chance of getting one by turn 3 is 48,8% (52,8% on the draw) and it just wrecks Stax/Mud. If you run 4 Mishra's Factory (I'm considering playing these instead of Mutavault) you have a way to handle Lodestone Golem until you get a Flux in play.

Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Red Elemental Blast or Pyroblast?

I will play this in UR Fish. Does that mean if I use the "Counter target blue spell" mode on REB he can NOT misdirect it to one of my Ninjas, Cursecatchers ect?
Once you pick the mode for the spell (in this case, target permanent or target spell), that is locked in until the spell resolves, regardless of whether it is misdirected later. So, if you play REB or Pyroblast targeting a blue spell, he can Misdirect either one of those, but it will have to be to another spell, not a permanent. The same is true if you target a blue permanent and he goes to Misdirect it; it would have to be to another permanent. Therefore, in the case of REB, the new target has to be of the same type (spell or permanent) originally selected and blue. In the case of Pyroblast, the new target need only be of the same type (spell or permanent) and color doesn't matter. Of course, if the new target is not blue for Pyroblast, Pyroblast will still resolve, it just won't do anything because its target isn't blue. Thanks Then REB it will be. Nice postcount btw

Can Misd target Reb changing the target to Misd?
Only if REB is cast in "Counter target blue spell" mode. If cast in "Destroy target blue permanent" it cannot be misdirected to target Misdirection. I will play this in UR Fish. Does that mean if I use the "Counter target blue spell" mode on REB he can NOT misdirect it to one of my Ninjas, Cursecatchers ect?

Regards
Red Elemental Blast: Choose one - Counter target blue spell; or destroy target blue permanent.
Pyroblast: Choose one - Counter target spell if it's blue; or destroy target permanent if it's blue.
In what situations will they be different because of this text? Is the "correct desiscion" to go 4 of the one that best suits your metagame?
I used to do 1/3 or 2/2 (just as we do with fetches) but now I'm not sure anymore....

Thanks for inspiration and decklist. I will play this in a powere tournament but I only have the moxen. Have -1 stifle, +1 jitte already, should I go -1 walk, +1 more jitte? Or a fire / ice? I just like the card, fire fish. What do you think?
Also do -1 recall, +1 sage of editor. Sounds okay? And -1 b.lotus, +1 petal. Okay? Seems weak...

Have there been any changes in your deck the last month?
And did you ever wanted the Annuls to be Spell Pierces instead? It just seems better, equally good in the first turns but can also counter tinker, yawgwin and stuff...
Edit: Mishra's or Muta? Mishra's can get bigger when blocking and bigger when 2, Muta can enable countering 2cc stuff.

I like the list that got 3rd in the most recent list on morphine.de. it runs 2 echoing truth. What kind of bounce do you prefer? Why is not anybody running Wipe away? Split second seems nice against tinkertargets...

Is there a reason why alot of you don't use Mox Ruby? I guess it would be nice with t1 shaman, lavamancer, open red for blast or bolt and still have 1 blue open for stifle, spell pierce/snare etc...

4 Barbarian Rings -- dont like these -- will change to Sol Ring, Ruby Mox, Lotus Petal, Lotus You DON'T need Sol Ring in this deck. Why no Wasteland/Strip Mine? It looks like your metagame is unpowered. Perhaps cut the Mox Monkey (Gorilla Shaman) to 1-2? Smash to Smitherens is nice as a 4-of in the board. 4 Keldon Marauders - I use thier 1 pt pings for critter removal ..since these 3/3's don't last long usually - That's kinda hard to do since it says "1 damage to target PLAYER" If you want more speed then Simian Spirit Guide could help. Blasts (Pyroblast/Red Elemental Blast) could be played maindeck in vintage. Riccochet Trap is also nice. I would include Pyrostatic Pillar in the board. And Null Rod could be considered (MD or SB). Sudden Shock and Thorn of Amethyst can be looked at.

Congrats for your impressive run! Unfortunately, the meta looks more like Legacy than Vintage, so it's difficult to adapt it to a meta filled with Noble Fish, Drain Decks and workshops :p
Do you have any report, in order to make an idea about how to play the deck properly? Thanks!
Thanks If I where to play this in powered metagame (say BoM IV or in the USA) I would play the same maindeck but with a different sideboard. http://www.deckcheck.net/deck.php?id=32067 finished 5th/42 in a powered metagame 24. January 2010. I don't have a tournamentreport yet sorry (whenever I try to write I make a play mistake right after). The MPV's are Vial and Pridemage. Epochrasite (!?) and Grunt with Clamp are also pretty good. No one expects Epochrasite If I where to cut any cards it would be Bolt/Helix... (but I won't do that)

4c Zoo – Vintage a.k.a. “Zoo Pissen”
The original decklist was played by John Michael Chrisostomo and placed fifth at the 42 players Neutral Grounds tournament 24. January 2010. I have had great success with this deck in my local unpowered metagame. Here is the list and my results (sanctioned tournaments).
4c Zoo – Vintage a.k.a. "Zoo Pissen" – 6th march 3 Skullclamp 4 Aether Vial 1 Chrome Mox 1 Mana Crypt
2 Lightning Helix 4 Swords to Plowshares 2 Lightning Bolt
4 Dark Confidant 3 Epochrasite 4 Qasali Pridemage 2 Ethersworn Canonist 2 Gaddock Teeg 3 Grim Lavamancer 3 Jötun Grunt 2 Tin Street Hooligan 2 Magus of the Moon
1 Badlands 1 Bayou 1 Taiga 1 Plateau 1 Plains 1 Mountain 1 Strip Mine 1 Forest (Horizon Canopy in the original decklist). 1 Karakas 2 Savannah 3 Wasteland 2 Windswept Heath 2 Wooded Foothills
Tournament 1 – 6. March 2010 – 1st place
Sideboard for this tournament: 1 Ethersworn Canonist 1 Gaddock Teeg 3 Stingscourger 3 Shattering Spree 1 Seal of Primordium 2 Relic of Progenitus 1 Tormod’s Crypt 3 Tsabo’s Web
R1 vs Goblins – Win R2 vs ANT – Win R3 vs Reanimate – Loss (he later got DQ after revealing two Brainstorm to an opponent’s peek) R4 vs TezzVault – Win R5 vs Pox – Loss Semi vs Goblins – Win Final vs Pox – Win
W – L – D 5 – 2 – 0
Tournament 2 – 10. April 2010 – 1st place
I cut 1 Plains for 1 Scrubland in the maindeck and played this sideboard:
1 Ethersworn Canonist 1 Diabolic Edict 2 Stingscourger 3 Shattering Spree 1 Tin Street Hooligan 2 Relic of Progenitus 1 Tormod’s Crypt 3 Extirpate 1 Ravenous Trap (I feared the Reanimate deck from the last tournament)
R1 vs ANT – Win R2 vs Affinity – Win R3 vs Sligh Elemetals – Win R4 vs Goblins – Loss R5 vs Vintage Blightning – Loss (I was already in the t4 and this was a good matchup for me) Semi vs Vintage Blightning – Win (exactly) Finals vs Goblins – Win (I win game 1 and we are both tired and split the price)
W – L – D 10 – 4 – 0
Tournament 3 – 8. May 2010
I cut 1 Windswept Heath and 1 Forest for 1 Arid Mesa and 1 Plains in the maindeck and played this sideboard:
2 Diabolic Edict 2 Stingscourger 3 Shattering Spree 1 Tin Street Hooligan 2 Relic of Progenitus 1 Tormod’s Crypt 3 Extirpate 1 Ravenous Trap
R1 vs TezzVault – Win R2 vs Reanimate – Win R3 vs TezzVault – Win R4 vs Vampires – Win R5 vs Dark Depths – Win No t4 this tournament
W – L – D 15 – 4 – 0
You can say alot about my matchups (yeah, Vintage is not huge in my area) but I have won 3 tournaments in a row with this deck and it seems to have an answer against almost everything. I just love tapping sideways to win. I also like having so many different creatures (9) so my opponent don't know what to expect. The biggest problem with this deck is it's manabase. But after small adjustments it works okay (sometimes not). I think I will change the Crypt and Chrome to perhaps Pearl and Ruby if my budget can afford it, this will probably help out both on manafixing and tempo.

This is my Tezzeret deck, it works really good in testing. (I only have 1 Mox and 2 Drains, sorry for the budget version) Manabase: 1 Mox Sapphire 1 Lotus Petal (1 Black Lotus) 1 Mana Crypt 1 Sol Ring 1 Tolarian Adademy 3 Seat of the Synod (Perhaps Jet, Offcolor, Offcolor) 4 Underground Sea 2 Polluted Delta 2 Flooded Strand 1 Misty Rainforest 7 Island Counterspells: 4 Force of Will 2 Mana Drain 2 Spell Pierce 1 Misdirection (Force #5) Win condition: 1 Time Vault 1 Voltaic Key 1 Tinker 1 Sphinx of the Steel Wind 1 Tezzeret, the Seeker Draw engine: 3 Bloodghast 2 Skullclamp Tutors: 4 Trinket Mage 1 Demonic Tutor 1 Vampiric Tutor 1 Mystical Tutor 1 Merchant Scroll 1 Intuition (= 3 Bloodghast) Draw / tech: 4 Dark Confidant 1 Thirst for Knowledge 1 Brainstorm 1 Sensei’s Divining Top 1 Repeal Sideboard: 4 Leyline of the Void 1 Helm of Obedience 10 the usual stuff I find this version more complicated and harder to deal with than regular Tezzeret. Ghast + Clamp = awesome CA. Is there anybody that wants to test this deck for me fully powered? (Drains, LoMoxen, Recall, Walk) Regards

Hey Bone,
Both Selkie and Thada are gamewinners vs Tezzeret. On the surface, I would say Thada would be more of a threat. But Selkie has the potential to give you and Ancestral Recall every turn due to the way your deck pumps Merfolk, which makes it an even bigger threat than Thada. Plus Selkie is more useful vs other non artifact combo decks. So I would say go with Selkie.
Maybe you should have Thada sideboard? 4 of would be great vs Tezz. But 2-3 of most likely due to space...
What about: MD-Changes: -1 Thada +1 Cold-Eyed Selkie (makes MD = 2 Cold-Eyed Selkie, 1 Thada) SB-Changes: -1 SoFI -1 ??? Tech +2 Thada (makes SB = 2 Thada) Other than that I am most like going -1 Mutavault, +1 Island

I played Merfolks in Bazaar of Moxen 3 last year and was quite happy with my build: Merfolks by Bone - Bazaar of Moxen 3 03.05.20091 Cold-Eyed Selkie 4 Cursecatcher 4 Lord of Atlantis 4 Merrow Reejerey 3 Silvergill Adept 2 Sygg, River Cutthroat 1 Brainstorm 3 Daze 1 Echoing Truth 4 Force of Will 1 Hurkyl's Recall 1 Misdirection 4 Null Rod 3 Standstill 3 Stifle 3 Flooded Strands 9 Islands 1 Mutavault 3 Polluted Delta 1 Strip Mine 4 Wasteland Sideboard: 3 Curfew 2 Energy Flux 1 Echoing Truth 1 Hurkyl's Recall 1 Relic of Progenitus 2 Spell Snare 4 Tormod's Crypt 1 Waterfront Bouncer I am now preparing for the vintage side event at GP Madrid and Bazaar of Moxen 4. I have made some changes to the deck. -2 Sygg (because it wasn't any good). +1 Silvergill Adept (2 for 1), +2 Thada Adel, Adel, Acquisitor (2/2 islandwalking merfolk for 3 that can win games on her own). This up the creature count from 18 to 19, helps Adept. In the spell section I have cut 1 Hurkyl's Recall and 1 Null Rod for 1 Daze. The reason behind it is to improve the matchup against GW Beats, HexmageDepths, Dredge and Fish. I do have a problem with tinkertargets but I guess I just have to counter tinker or bounce everything except Inkwell. In the land section I've cut the fetches to make this deck better against Wasteland, Stifle and moon effects. The sideboard have also done some major changes to deal with the change in the metagame. Merfolks by Bone - GP Madrid Vintage Side Event 28.02.20101 Cold-Eyed Selkie 4 Cursecatcher 4 Lord of Atlantis 4 Merrow Reejerey 4 Silvergill Adept 2 Thada Adel, Acquisitor 1 Brainstorm 4 Daze 1 Echoing Truth 4 Force of Will 1 Misdirection 3 Null Rod 3 Standstill 3 Stifle 12 Islands 1 Mox Sapphire 3 Mutavault 1 Strip Mine 4 Wasteland Sideboard: 1 ??? Tech 3 Energy Flux 2 Ravenous Trap 2 Relic of Progenitus 3 Submerge 1 Swords of Fire and Ice 1 Trickbind 2 Umezawa's Jitte No I need your help... as there are some things I am still not sure about. #1 - Is 3 Mutavault too much? Should I go -1 Muta +1 Island? #2 - If I get my hand on Ancestral should I trade it with Brainstorm? #3 - If I get my hand on Time Walk should I trade it with Standstill? The deck (MD+SB) has a good matchup against Tezzeret, Stax, Fish and Dredge #4 Oath (Iona naming blue is a *#¤) how do I deal with the Oath matchup? Any SB changes? #6 And the same goes for Tendrils, I do have 3 Stifle + 1 single Trickbind in the side, any toughts? #7 What about Æther Spellbomb, Kira Great Glass-Spinner, Spell Snare and Spell Pierce? See you in Madrid

How poor is the language barrier? If I were to say, make it a college graduation trip, would I have ELD Sized problems with folks not knowing english?
Last year I had some problem with just speaking English when travelling from Geneva, CH (where my plane landed) to Annecy, FR. But when I came to Annecy the language barrier was no problem. Everyone (at least 90%) at the tournament spoke english and all the judges too. I don't think it will be a problem for you because French, Italian, German and Spanish are so different that they just use english as a common language. You should take the trip, it's such a nice tournament and great venue (just check out the pictures). And great Ice cream and chocolate too! And nutella crepes. And pate. (Okay, so I'm a food junkie)

Garbage (sorry for that)
Again as it is with alot of cards that come up in this sub-forum this is not a bad card. In many situations it would be really good. But in all those decks that could use this cards (I see only two, UW Fish and UWG Fish there are better options. That is the reason this card will never see play. As long as there are better options why play sub-optimal cards?
