Two friends and I would be happy to take on either team or both in a  draft.

I would love to take you guys on in a draft but drafting is too much like doing law school homework - it's tough, grueling, and not exciting, even if it is rewarding and fun to win.  THe only way I'll do a team draft is if we put money on it enough to get me revved - like $50 or more.

On the other hand, if you want to do some T4 Smile

Hm...This might be interesting. I need to see who else is going to Waterbury to be a Third. Seems Ashok is volunteering to be a second.

Team Jacob Orlove will totally own that trivia event, assuming the highlander tournament takes <5 hours.

Incidentally, what Mental Magic rules will you be using? And, will Tendrils be banned for Highlander?

I suggest Tendrils does, in fact, see bannination.  It would be nice to see new archetypes in the format and give a good impression of whether or not it needs to stay banned.

Tendrils will not be banned.

If I did, people would just play some other combo deck like academy.

Play a freakin Arcane Lab and that white Law reprint thingy people.

Either that or play combo yourself.

As for mental magic...these are the rules we will be using:
http://www.starcitygames.com/php/news/expandnews.php?Article=5512

ADDITION: The card cannot be named as what it is...the author was vauge on this.

ADDITION: To play the card or Morph it you must know what it is and what it does.  At any time though, your opponent can ask a judge to VERIFY what it is you said.  The judge will simply confirm whether you are correct or not, but will not reveal any unknown information.

All the verdict this author put forth I agree with and so we will try that as a starting point for this first mental tourney and talk about it before day 2 of the next TMD after this one.

At Klown's Highlander tourney Tendrils turned in a freakish amount of turn one kills.
Arcane Lab and Rule of Law cost three.
The finals was a Tendrils mirror.
Academy's not as fast or resilient.

I agree with Ben Kobold.
This would be an excellent time to try a Tendrils-free Highlander.

I agree, type one tendrils plays so many one ofs that you're basically asking people to play a highlander deck agains a somewhat poorly tuned type one deck.

What I'm not understanding though, is how Tendrils is the problem.  Could people just use Brain Freeze or even HUNTING PACK for that matter?  If anything were to be banned to stop any of these strom decks...wouldn't it have to be Yawgmoth's Will?  And even if this stops the Tendrils deck, aren't other combo decks still an option?  Furthermore, if I ban something, what about the people who don't hear the message? Some people may come to the event hoping to play their Tendrils deck and then be screwed over.  Perhaps, I will do a poll of the players playing HIghlander a few hours before the event starts on Day 2 and if the consesus agrees...maybe I'll make it the case then, but lets discuss this a little more before making anything final.

Ray, will the Day 2 Type 1 Tournament allow proxies? Will the Highlander tournament?

Holy cow...I can't believe I forgot to mention that.  Both the second chance and Highlander tourney will be 10 proxy.

Ray,

Does this mean that there will be enough tv's available to bring our own systems/games?   I'd love to rock some N64 Goldeneye or MarioKart.

I can't make the main event however making day 2 seems more and more feasible.

The problem with highlander combo is not that it can win turn one--it's how often that happens. Tendrils is the main culprit when it comes to combo decks consistently winning quickly. Banning it not only has no effect on non-combo decks, but makes comboing off hard enough (~17 storm and 1U or 5 storm and 5GG), but also makes the kills less unstoppable. A single Blessing in the SB ruins Freeze, and tons of stuff can stop a bunch of creatures. Only tendrils combines low cost with a guaranteed kill.

The combo decks that won at the last highlander event had both cunning wish -> brain freeze and quirion dryad available, but those kills were never used. Tinker -> colossus won a few games, but tendrils was what put both of those decks in the finals.

Without tendrils, combo can still exist, but it won't be far and away the best deck in the format. Letting people have a chance with non-combo decks is good for the format.
